I have nothing bad to say about the food. This review is only about how we were treated. We live 5 minutes away. We were rushing home to watch the game when my youngest, 4 years old, suddenly needed a bathroom. The way 4 year olds do, no warning, no negotiating. I spotted the restaurant, stepped in and asked politely. The look I got said more than any words could. On our way out he noticed the TV. Game 7 was just starting. His eyes lit up. We'd been walking past crowds of people in red jerseys and he kept asking why everyone was dressed the same. I'm a fan. He's still 4, hockey is still new to him. So I crouched down and started explaining. That's our team. These are the playoffs. Whoever wins tonight moves on. He was locked in, pointing at the screen, asking questions. It was one of those two minute moments with a small kid you just don't want to cut short. A server came over to ask for our order. I said one moment, we're just leaving. Before I could finish, a staff member named Cassandra told me this wasn't a public place for watching TV. I said I understood, just one more minute. She repeated it: order something or leave. I asked for a glass of water. Her answer was no. Water is free, doesn't count. You need to order something paid or you need to go. 5 minutes. Maybe 3 tables occupied. Two quiet kids. We left. Tonight Montreal won Game 7. The city lost its mind. People crying in the streets, hugging strangers, horns going everywhere. My 4 year old saw all of it. But he almost understood what he was seeing. He was about 3 more minutes of explanation away from having that moment where hockey becomes something real for the first time. Cassandra made sure that didn't happen. There's a difference between running a business and just being a decent human being. Tonight you lost both a customer and a moment that can't be given back. Montréal mérite mieux.

Smoked Meat Sandwich Combo and Smoked Meat Poutine

I'm usually not a fan of smoked meat sandwiches, but Dunn's has a great smoked brisket sandwich. My friend and I landed in Montreal and made Dunn's our first lunch stop. The vibe is old school diner with booths and a bar lined with red stools. The service is quick and efficient and we had multiple servers during our visit. My friend and I opted for the small smoked meat sandwich combo and the smoked meat poutine. We were taken aback by the huge portions for both the sandwich and the poutine (but better more than less). The smoked meat sandwich had a decent amount of meat and came with a ton of fries. This was bad news because the poutine came with a ton of fries, gravy, cheese curds, and smoked meat bits. Taste-wise, the meat used for both mains were deliciously smoky and tender. The only problem was that the sandwich used flimsy rye bread that got soggy quickly. On the other hand, the poutine was comforting with a blanket of savory gravy and melted cheese curds. Paired with ketchup, mayo, and mustard, both the sandwich and poutine made for a hearty meal. Dunn's is a great choice in the middle of winter when you want a warm carb and protein filled meal to protect you from the cold. Definitely worth the money and if you can't finish the food, just take the rest to go.

I can't emphasize enough that if you're reading this review and have never had a smoked meat sandwich in Montreal, you owe it to yourself to try one here. It's almost impossible to find a Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich outside of the area since it will either be corned beef, pastrami, or brisket. But a smoked meat sandwich will be a juicy tender version of all three. I got the fatty cut for a sandwich that literally melts in your mouth. Large diner booths with a dessert window round out the "come in and sit" ambiance. With a parking lot and open basically 24 hours, you can stop here after a late night comedy show, or if you want to completely skip the 2 hour line at Schwartz without sacrificing the taste.

This is our go-to for smoked meat, it's honestly my favourite. Accessible location with parking, friendly efficient service. I didn't get a photo of the desserts but oh! the cheesecake!

Came here on a Friday evening. Restaurant was pretty busy but we got seated within a few mins. Friendly and attentive service. Food was really good. Free parking in the shared parking lot and they accept credit cards. For starters, we ordered the smoked meat egg rolls and Michigan hot dog. Michigan hot dog was interesting, almost like a sweeter chili dog. I got the Smoked Meat Plate and it was enough to share with another person. Highly recommend the Smoked Meat Plate. Comes with 4 rye bread slices so you can build your own sandwich. For the smoked meat, you have 3 choices: lean, fatty and medium; medium being the most popular. We got medium.

I ordered a jumbo smoked meat and what they are serving now as jumbo is not serious if you compare as before. But the sandwich was good. Lots of families in here tonight. Not too loud , just right. The service was great. Efficient and amicable. Parking is a little difficult with 3 restaurants sharing the spaces

The food is good. I've eaten here a couple of times on different trips to Canada. Greeter seated us immediately and service was fast. Nice homie feeling of the restaurant. The only thing is if you're from the US don't think of the food here to be your typical southern smoke house. It's far from southern barbecue.

Smoked meat sandwich with poutine fries and gravy very delicious. The Dunn's in Montreal , Canada is open 24/7 and it's perfect after a concert or hockey game. The service is always great.

An easy walk from my hotel so I altered my plan of a return visit to Schwartz's. Was fairly empty at 11:30, got right in and service was attentive. Opted for the small combo, came with fries; slaw; and a pickle. I thought the bread was thin and weak - but the smoked meat had good flavor. Slaw was okay - but the pickle was crisp and tangy. Normally I wouldn't eat as many fries but I'm a sucker for the Canadian Heinz ketchup ...lol. It's a nice place and an easy place to go mid town. Solid lunch, but doesn't beat Schwartz's

Service was mediocre. We asked 4 times for straws, our server sat down and chat with his friend without checking our table. The food was good but FYI mozzarella sticks don't go well with salsa is supposed to be marinated sauce. No soap in the bathroom. Dunn Famous Crappy service

The Montreal smoked meat sandwich was so good! The whole wheat bread was too soft though. I wish we could have just ordered the sandwich without the sides.

Came her for lunch with a friend on August 13. Were arrived around 2:00pm and seating was very fast as I'm assuming most of the lunch crowd (if any) had already left. We were immediately asked after being seated if we wanted something to drink and both my friend and I opted for just water. I took a look at the menu and decided to have the smoke meat platter which was some slices of smoke meat, some pieces of rye bread, a small cup of coleslaw, a pickle slice, and some fries. My friend decided on s smoke meat plate which compromised of a smoke meat sandwich, a small cup of coleslaw, a pickle slice, and some fries which he decided to swap for another small cup of coleslaw. We were asked what type of cuts we wanted for our smoke meat and both my friend and I opted for the medium (there is fatty, medium, and lean). Within a few minutes, our orders arrived, I used my rye bread and put a few pieces of smoke meat in it to make my sandwich and topped it with some mustard. I found it to be very good. The plate size was decent for the price. They have free WiFi in this place which requires a password. Since my cellphone was having issues with accessing the data (speed-wise). I'm not sure if it was because coverage in the restaurant wasn't good or whether it was because the area didn't have good coverage for data. I asked for the password for the WiFi and was given it. I had a problem connecting originally but when the server returned, I asked her for the WiFi password again and she gave it to me and this time it worked with her clarification. After finishing, we were asked how we were going to pay and both of us said separately and with credit card. The server brought the portable credit card reader to our table and we paid for our meals before leaving. Service was great and the server was very friendly and talkative. Food arrived fast and our water was refilled during our meal without us asking. Also free working WiFi (with password which they easily provided when asked). Plus, they were advertised to accept American Express credit cards and didn't give me any hassles when I used my AMEX card to pay for my meal (and gave the server a higher tip that I normally give)

I had a craving for pizza with smokemeat. It was about $17 and enough for two people to split. Service was good and the food came out quick. Quite enjoyable.

I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. All the staff was so welcoming, and surprisingly chipper this early in the morning. SHOUTOUT TO LA BANQUISE! THANK YOU FOR FUELING THE JOURNEY! IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

I took my niece from New York City here because La Banquise is supposed to be the "must try" poutine spot in Montreal. We had a great night overall: soccer game, drinks at Mellon Brasserie (none of us were drunk; my wife was 100% sober). Everything was fun and chill. But La Banquise completely ruined the end of that trip, and I'm not okay with letting this go. We paid for the food and service. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: at the end of the day, we were customers, and we deserved to be treated with respect. We waited for our Uber outside. It was cold, and I'm on crutches, so my injuries hurt badly in the cold. After waiting outside for a long time with the Uber not showing up, we went back inside to wait near the door, in the corner, not blocking anyone. The staff at the door immediately came in and started rudely and aggressively kicking us out. He refused to speak English with me after I clearly said, "I don't speak French, so talk to me in English." He kept talking French and was rude to my wife, my niece, and me. He told the waitress in French that we were "blocking the way," which was 100% false. (My wife speaks French) We were just standing near the entrance, waiting for a few minutes, trying to get out of the cold. When I went to the cashier and explained, "This guy is kicking me out. I just paid for my meal. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: you're still a customer, and you shouldn't be kicked out and treated like trash just because you're waiting for your Uber on crutches. I'm on crutches, it's cold, and my Uber isn't here yet," they called a waitress who also started telling us to leave instead of helping. She didn't try to find a solution; she just said, "No, no, leave, leave." This is not just bad service. This is disgusting, disrespectful treatment of a paying customer with a mobility issue. My niece, who had a blast all night, ended the trip saying, "What the f....? You bring me here and they treat us like this?" She now has a bad impression of Montreal because of this place. My niece is from New York City, and she's also posting her own review. That review will be seen by people in New York and by tourists looking for recommendations. If you treat tourists like this, you're not just ruining one night, you're ruining the image of the whole city. Montreal is supposed to be a welcoming city for tourists and people looking to have fun and be treated with respect. La Banquise failed that completely. The food was okay, but the experience was terrible because of how we were treated. This is unacceptable. You should be ashamed of how you handled this.
