Pooh and I went here for lunch yesterday. It was packed which was a good sign. Our server was very friendly and helpful when deciding what to eat. Pooh had the Short Rib Mac & Cheese and I had the Super Smoked Meat sandwich and replaced my fried with mashed potatoes. The French onion had great flavor and was so cheesy on top! I will say that maybe it was a little too much of the bread on top, eventually it felt like I was fighting bread to get to the soup. Dropped by here recently for lunch. I haven't been back here in probably over 3 years and when I was in the area shortly after restaurants were allowed to re-open for dining services, this place was closed during lunch time. I passed by today as I was downtown and it was a nice sunny day and decided to eat here as I felt like a smoke meat sandwich. Since I was downtown for work and my lunch was roughly 1 hour long (taking me about ~10 minutes to walk here and another ~10 minutes to walk back to my office), I thought that I would have plenty of time for my lunch. My lunch was at about 1:00pm and I probably arrived at the restaurant around 1:10pm. Going downstairs, there was someone waiting to be seated before me. People working at the restaurant seemed to be ignoring the line in the front and one of the people decided to go into the restaurant and speak with the server to let her know that people were waiting to be seated and there were apparently empty seats. There was a sign at the bottom of the stairs mentioning that they were working at reduced capacity. The server showed up and then seated the people who were in front of me and then returned to seat myself. When I followed her, I noticed some of the tables were closed/cordoned off so they weren't operating at 100%. The server gave me the menu and then left. Even though when she led me to my table, I spoke with her in English, she gave me a French only menu. It wasn't really that much of an issue as I can understand French and knew what I wanted. When I looked at the menu, it seemed as if prices have increased dramatically and they also don't have any lunch specials or at least these weren't advertised/mentioned on the menu. The server returned with a small glass of water and asked if I was ready. I told her that I was and made my order. I ordered a smoke meat sandwich (called Super Smoke Meat). Since this is the first time I returned since the Covid closures, the tables were bare except for a paper napkin, fork, and knife (no salt, pepper, ketchup, or mustard containers). My order took about 10 minutes to arrive to me and when the person dropped off my order, the person (it wasn't the server who took my order), just placed it on my table and left without asking me whether I wanted ketchup, mustard, salt, etc. Also, after 10 minutes, with the small glass of water that they gave, the glass was empty and I wasn't offered a refill. After I finished my meal, I wiped my hands/mouth with the paper napkin and crumpled it up and put it on my empty plate to signify that I was finished. I also removed my wallet from my pocket and had it in my hands. Waited another 5 minutes for the server to return and when she returned, she took the empty plate and asked me if I wanted more water. Sorry but my meal is over and I didn't get a refill when my glass was empty shortly after the start of my meal and I'm now offered a refill?!? Why not offer me ketchup/mustard/salt now?!? The server asked me if I was ready to pay and I said yes. She then left and served a few other tables before returning with my bill and the portable credit card machine. I paid and wasn't sure what I should do with the tip since I didn't feel that she deserved my customary tip (where I would automatically click on one of the predefined percentages on the machine) and I felt that even a low tip of 10% was still too much for what little service I got. I also didn't feel like perhaps causing a scene by not giving any tip nor did I think that not giving a tip was warranted. I decided to manually enter a dollar amount for the tip into the credit card machine and the transaction was processed. When the credit card spit out the copy of the credit card receipt, the server saw how little I left as a tip but didn't question me on it. She probably thought that I was just a "bad tipper" or was visiting Montreal from another country/place and didn't know how tipping worked in Montreal/Canada. I wanted to tell the server why I had left such a tip but due to the time, I didn't want to be late returning to work. I can't recommend eating here for lunch (maybe same thing applies to dinner) based on the service. The food was however good. If they aren't going to refill the patron's water glasses as frequently or regularly because they are (too) busy, they should probably give larger glasses of water. The glass of water that they gave was probably less than 200 ml. 200ml of water during a meal isn't enough in my opinion. If due to sanitary and Covid concerns, they no longer want to give/leave squeezable bottles of condiments (ketchup/mustard) on tables, my suggestion is to put the individual packs on the tables or when placing the plate on the table, automatically leave 2 packs of each item/condiment on the table as well or at least ask if the person wants ketchup for their fries and extra mustard for their smoke meat sandwich. I've eaten here more then I can count and I've yet to have a waiter as professional and friendly as the man I had. He was from around lac saquaye area I believe tall man with brown hair. Opened our napkin sticker and removed the sticker from the table. He went that extra mile and we really noticed. We shared our meal and he brought us plates for the salad the poutine and sandwich. I find that their smoked meat is very good, I recommend checking it out if it's your first time in Montreal and you would like to try some local food. During my last visit, I ordered one of their steaks. I think it's called Hamburger Steak (I might be wrong). It is served with sauteed onions on top and comes with a side of French fries, veggies, a pickle and some gravy. Portions are pretty big and food quality was also pretty awesome. Had a great dinner with family. ATTENTION LOW FODMAPPERS: the house salad dressing and Caesar salad dressing has no garlic or onion and tastes great. In a dark gloomy basement, one floor down from Ste Catherine St. you will be greeted by friendly staff who work hard to have you coming back. I guess the only drawback is that the price is a little higher when compared to the quick service deli. We have been here twice which is the same amount we've visited Montreal on both occasions it was for lunch, on both occasions the great service shined out, after our meal they went out of there way to answer a question on where we could go to buy flowers. I look forward to Reuben's every time I'm in Montreal; I'm a huge fan of this place! Reuben is located on St. Catherine's amidst all the shopping and fun. This place seems like a little hole in the wall when you see it on the street (don't confuse this place to the other restaurant called 'Rueben's Deli'). Once you open the door, your right on top of a long flight of narrow stairs going down. The dark red walls and carpet give you a cozy feel and the pictures of all their food framed up really make me hungry! When you've finally gone down all those stairs you're greeted by a friendly worker who seats you in a booth. Almost all the seating in this restaurant are booths, which makes your dining experience more comfortable and private since you're not crowded around tables of other people. This restaurant is a basement restaurant and is all done up in a dark and warm red color. The place is pretty big, somewhat stuffy during warm seasons and has no windows; I slightly feel claustrophobic in here. The entire aura of this place is like a diner. I can see the back counter that consists of all the tempting desserts, a man making food and a little bar right next to it. The menu comes and it's hard to choose anything since everything seems tempting. There is a great variety of everything and the prices are very reasonable too. From what I can remember, the menu consisted of appetizers, soups, salads, breakfast, variety of sandwiches, burgers, entrées that consisted of steak, seafood etc; poutine, dessert, cocktails and much more. Overtime, I had the opportunity to try the turkey club sandwich, smoked meat sandwich, French onion soup, grilled chicken caesar salad, brownie, smoked meat poutine, cocktails etc. Each order of mine was gigantic, especially the smoked meat sandwich- it's impossible to put your mouth around that sandwich, it's so big! The food was made well and tasted really good too. Their brownie dessert I won't forget, it's the best brownie I've ever had- warm brownie topped off with vanilla ice-cream and warm chocolate sauce. The staff is friendly at Rueben's but the service can be a little slow sometimes. However, this didn't stop me from coming back; the food is just too yummy! Overall, Reuben's Restaurant offers great food in terms of quality and quantity at reasonable prices. The service can suffer sometimes, and so can their décor. The food at Reuben's is out of this world! Not only is almost everything they serve huge and relatively inexpensive, but it's also delicious. I have had a number of things here ranging from omelettes to sandwiches, and I have never been disappointed. My personal favourite is the super smoked meat sandwich with Swiss cheese that comes with fries and an amazing dish of coleslaw with a fair slice of a pickle. Furthermore, I was surprised at how even simple deserts like a brownie - which they top with vanilla ice cream and drown in hot chocolate sauce - can be brought to a new level of awesome by them. I honestly can't wait to eat here whenever I'm in Montreal. The seating at Reuben's is also pretty good, since most (if not all) of their seats are booths. The decor is unremarkable, but who cares, when you get to stare at the beauty of your massive sandwich. This restaurant is truly (1) a Montreal experience, (2) tourist worthy, (3) a local favourite. Having been here many many times, I come back to the restaurant when I really crave a classic Western menu with a twist of Montreal French cuisine. Southern Crisp Chicken Tender Salad: This salad is by far my FAVOURITE, and I always order this ever time I go to this restaurant. The chicken tenders are so crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside, the abundant vegetables are so fresh and goes well with their barbecue ranch dressing. It also comes with some three cheese garlic bread. The salad is actually big enough to be a full entrée, at least I think so. I strongly recommend this salad. Rocky Top chicken: It comes with two grilled chicken breasts cooked just right, with mashed potatoes, barbecue sauce, bacon, tomatoes, cheese, corn, and black beans on top. Because the dish has two fillets instead of one, it is very filling, and almost enough food for two! Ken and I usually get the salad and chicken, and share both between the two of us. I don't know Reuben's does it, but their chicken fillets in this dish are cooked fully through yet they are not dry, as chicken breasts can be at times. Smoked Meat Sandwich: My husband recommended the smoked meat sandwich to me when we first visited the restaurant on our first date. Obviously, Montréal is very famous for their smoked meat, and Reuben's may not be the best place to try them. However, now that I've tried smoked meat sandwiches at all of the top rated places, I must say that my husband was right when he said Reuben's smoked meat sandwich tastes pretty good. We tried their cheesecake on one of our visits, and I'll say that it is one of the better places you can go for cheesecake. Of course, I have my favourites, but Reuben's cheesecakes come quite close! The restaurant usually has long lineups during dinner peak times, so make sure to reserve a table before you go if you don't like waiting. Their service can be on and off, usually depends on how busy they are, which can be understandable. This is the first place I got to eat at when I arrived in Montreal. They seated us quickly when we arrived at the restaurant. The decor is a little dated and seems as though not much may have changed from it's original state from the 80's? The server was very helpful when we ordered our food, as it was him that suggested our meals. I ordered a cold cut sandwich, and my friend ordered the Montreal smoked meat sandwich. His was far better by leaps and bounds. I wish my sandwich was made with his meat but my tomato and lettuce - it would have been so good. The fries for some reason reminded me of McDonalds fries. The food was good I ordered lox with cream cheese and it was great. My wife ordered an egg omelette and poutine. She it said was very good. It took a while for us to get our food but our waiter Gregory was attentive so be sure to stop by and say hello. read more
