Had to take a couple donuts "to go" so I could just get out of the elements of the weather. I'm so glad I did. I learned that all of the donuts are made fresh in house DAILY with real ingredients... and there was a wide variety of options! You can tell just by looking at them, that they're fresh and different than others you've ever tried before. Check them out. Truly, you can tell that these are handmade donuts. Yum! The shop is cute, a bit rustic looking, but suits Carson Street so well. There are some little stickers and nick nacks around the shop, but nothing too crazy, just very particular and with purpose. Showing up this early only for people ahead of you walk out with 3-5 boxes at a time. The hurdles aren't worth it. Now, if someone else brought them to an event and had them available - I would not scoff don't get me wrong, I'd have one (maybe two). I just can't get on board with this place philosophically. The mystique and purposeful scarcity of both selection and what leads to closing quite early is at this point trivial. But it appears the scarcity is the appeal. This is (currently) the NFTs of donuts. We got an assorted dozen and my wife and I were both of the mind "these are all average." Though we were aligned and agreed their Old Fashioned donut is the standout. That one is extremely cravable. Frankly, our experience left so much to be desired that we're content not to go back. I'd recommend not wasting your time either.

Located on Steuben Street in the West End, this shop dates back several decades. It is located in an unassuming white building, with little signage. However, there is plenty of street parking along with the private lot on the side. This place does not necessarily have set business hours. They have an open time, and go until they sell out. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday they are open at 7 AM, and the weekends is 8 AM. I would advise arriving for the set open time if you are planning to get donuts on any given day. Especially on the weekend, they will sell out within an hour or two (yes, the donuts are that good!!). Plan accordingly if you are planning to stop. It is not unusual for a line to be forming 30+ minutes before the doors open. The plus of getting there early like that is that you will be one of the first served, and therefore able to get first picks! The selection of donuts rotates each day. There is not necessarily a schedule on which this occurs, but they might have a flavor today that they will not have tomorrow. Some of my favorites overtime have been the blueberry cake, pumpkin cake, cherry "sandwich" filled, sour cream, and so many more. I have asked the staff before if/when they would be making a particular kind, and they will let you know if they have an idea, so do not be afraid to ask. They sell cake donuts, regular donuts, long Johns, cinnamon rolls, and other speciality items each day. There are also donut holes, while are quite honestly some of the best I have ever tasted anywhere. They are usually warm and melt in your mouth. Do not leave without buying some if they are available. The value here is unbeatable. With the donuts being homemade and fresh, the prices are the best anywhere. They are even cheaper than somewhere like Dunkin, but the quality is 100 times better. This is probably another reason the people keep coming back for these delicacies. However, note that it is CASH ONLY! When I first started coming here, an older gentleman owned the place. He was so friendly and social to everyone who walked through the door. I always enjoyed interacting with him when I came by. A few years ago, a younger couple bought the business. However, the previous owner still works alongside them, which is cool to see! The new owners have been more consistent with being open during advertised open days, and are active on their Instagram account. This helps with knowing specials, when they sell out, if there is a change in being open, etc. Before, the days were sometimes hit or miss if they would be open. However, this has improved a lot since the new ownership has been in place. I love Better Maid - there truly is not a better cake donuts or donut hole anywhere I have tried in Pittsburgh. Plus, it is local people producing a handmade product, which is something everyone can get behind supporting. It was super fresh and had plenty of custard filling and icing on top. The staff were super friendly and quick to take customer's orders. I saw several people getting half dozens and dozens.
