Food is not bad, but I was pretty disappointed given how highly rated this place was. Like many of the reviewers here, I got the beef chowfun and found it lacking in flavor, meat, and sear (1/5, likely the worst version of the dish I've had). The redeeming dish was the cumin lamb- although not numbing authentic like at Sichuan places, it had a nice flavor. The spicy fried fish dish was beer battered (which is odd for the Chinese version since this isn't fish and chips) and over fried. In addition, the eggplant dish tasted like sweet and sour eggplants- which isn't bad but it isn't authentic. Overall not bad but definitely pretty disappointing given the high yelp review. read more

Got here super late on a Thursday night as we were very hungry after a long day of travel and saw on Yelp that it was still open. Unfortunately they were only doing take-out at that point. Thought about just going somewhere else but decided not to. Man am I glad we did. The woman working the front was very helpful and recommended a few dishes to us. We ended up getting 2 different kinds of dumplings, shrimp (steamed) and fried cabbage/pork. Both were super tasty and perfectly done. You know how sometimes the dumpling can be really tacky and almost gluey in texture? Yeah, these weren't. Also got the scallion pancake beef roll. The pancake had a slightly sweet taste which worked really well with the beef inside. An interesting dish that I would highly recommend! Finally got the Dan Dan noodles with peanuts. The woman who took our order told us that they were kind of spicy but they were not. However they were still super tasty and a definite must try. Definitely more old school, with a giant menu covering the "greatest hits" of a variety of cuisines. Its decor was humble but clean, reminds me of Chinese restaurants 20-30 years ago. They have a couple of massive tables and they take reservations, so they'd be a good choice for a large party. When I first walked in, I was a bit concerned seeing multiple groups of people eating what looked like chow mein and orange chicken, but I was quickly reassured of their ability to make legit Chinese food too. You can really get it all here. I think they have one of the best soup dumplings in the Boston area, at least out of the restaurants I've tried. We also ordered Shanghai pan fried bao, lamb with cumin, sautéed string beans, and cauliflower dry pot. Every dish was hot, fresh, and tasty! The service was also really nice and efficient. An amazing Chinese restaurant in Cambridge. I came here for an early lunch on Saturday morning with a few friends. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, rice cakes, green beans, noodles, and beef scallion roll. The scallion pancake was crispy and a perfect appetizer to share with everyone. The green beans were flavorful and had a nice crunch to them. The rice cakes and noodles were good. We ordered 2 soup dumplings, one order was great, but the other one tasted a bit off, so we asked the server to replace it. The waitress we had was super kind and polite throughout our entire meal. Since there was a bad batch of soup dumplings they had to remake them, so they gave us complimentary fried chicken strips while we waited. These were very crispy and salty. The second batch of soup dumplings were even better. They are relatively big compared to other soup dumpling places, but definitely worth a try. I've come here twice recently, one for a social gathering with friends and another for a team dinner with colleagues, and I have to say that Dumpling Xuan is a pretty solid staple for Chinese food in the East Cambridge area! I came on Tuesday evenings both times and the place was a little busy, but not overwhelmingly so. A few tables filled up both times so it didn't feel too lively, but not too empty either. I got the same server both times and she was friendly and accommodating for both occasions. Their menu is standardly extensive and covers a wide variety of dishes, making it a little difficult to choose, but eventually we settled on about one dish per person. The buns and baos were pretty good - definitely felt more homemade than the frozen types I'm used to making at home! Each of the main entree dishes were a little small, honestly. For the price we were paying, it definitely felt a little disappointing, especially the flat noodles. The second time I came, we had a gluten-free person with us, and while they couldn't eat any of the soup dumplings, the staff were super accommodating with ensuring that everything else we ordered was without soy sauce and other sources of gluten. I was on a work trip and staying in the area. I didnt know the area well, but knew I wanted some soup. On way way home, I saw this place, pulled over and went in. I was immediately welcomed warmly by the woman at the front desk. She brushed me over, kinda like how a grandma would when she sees one of her babies come through the door on a cold winter day, to a large table. She asked how many and I said "just me". I told her I wanted a wonton soup to start and she quickly went to the kitchen, placed my order and came back with some tea. I ordered the chicken and broccoli, excuse me, im a basic bish, anyway.... Several women were working that night and they all came by to check in on me. It felt nice. The food was very good. It was fresh and tasty. It was a weekday, so the place was almost empty, but there was a table of 6 university kids just enjoying their food and having a great time together and I could see all the "aunties" taking care of them and providing service with love. As someone from the 626 who never would have thought he would find a piece of home here in Boston, I am so happy that I've found my go-to Chinese food spot. Clean and modern decor - no frills, but absolutely 舒服 vibe. Service was excellent - I bumbled my way through a great conversation in Mandarin with the waitress (who gave me great recommendations and was so kind), but I get the sense their English is very much passable. Onto the very affordable and delish foods. Scallion pancake beef roll - amazingly textured, thick 蔥油餅 wrapped around braised beef and what I believe was 甜麵醬. Not your typical 牛肉捲餅 but definitely a fresh take on it. I literally cried tears of joy biting into this lol Taiwan beef noodle soup - this 牛肉麵 isn't the spicy red beef broth I'm often used to getting in the 626, but the flavors were fresh and well-balanced. Per the waitress, they make the bone broth and season it in-house so she recommends folks try it. Crab and pork soup dumplings - bro these 小籠包 will be haunting my dreams. The skin on these had a substantial chew without being overly thick and held together very well. The insides were piping hot with flavorful broth - delicious XLB filling with just a touch of briny sweetness from the crabmeat. Pan-fried pork burns - these were big and flavorful. Insides were heavy on the ginger. A solid dish but I like my 生煎包 a bit smaller, with fluffier bun, and a crispier fried bottom. Free cut oranges, fresh and juicy, afterward for the nostalgia. I get take-out from here about 2-3 times a month, and I love it. It is really a dim sum place, so you can't really get small orders for one. That can make it hard to choose something, but I really enjoy the steamed pork and cabbage dumplings and the Taiwanese crispy chicken strips, as well as the spicy eggplant and their tofu dishes. I was staying in Boston for a concert and I was browsing Yelp and found Dumpling Xuan. I knew I had to try it. I mustered up a to go order knowing I would have to reheat everything I ordered later after the show. The menu is large. They have a great selection of all sorts of Asian dishes which made my decision a difficult one. I narrowed it down to four choices. Scallion pancake beef roll with spicy peppers. Steamed pork and leek dumplings. Steamed shrimp dumplings. Taiwan style fried dumplings. The scallion pancake beef roll was delicious. Great flavor, not too greasy like some scallion pancakes can be. Definitely large enough to share with one or two others. The steamed dumplings were also wonderful. Great shrimp flavor with a nice wrapper..and the pork and leek bursting with seasoned pork flavor with nice bits of leek. Taiwan fried dumplings didn't disappoint. Nicely fried with great texture and flavor. I definitely will put Dumpling Xuan on my map and return to hopefully dine in. If this reheat to go order made me impressed I definitely need to try it in house. You won't be disappointed! read more

My friends really like coming here. There's lots of seating and the food comes out very quickly. You can order either via the QR code or they will take your order. I can't remember what I ordered previously but we had a lot of vegetarians this time so this was what we got. - Scallion pancakes: very crispy, great flavor. Friend declared them better than Dumpling House. - Vegetable spring roll: the order only comes with two. They're your basic spring roll that you get and come very hot. - Chinese watercress: fairly standard. Pieces were cut smaller than normal and it's not a super big portion. - Preserved egg yolk with tofu: I did not order this and I don't understand why you would, but a friend wanted it so we got it. It was fine if you like preserved egg (which I don't lol) and comes with dashi flakes. - Fried fish fillets with chili sauce: the fish was fried in a spicy coating and was pretty good, although I don't think this is their best entree. - Mapo tofu: a good option for vegetarians, but I don't think this is my favorite mapo tofu in town. It's still pretty decent. They bring you some cut fruit on the house after you're done with dinner. I've gotten watermelon before but this time they brought us out some sliced oranges. read more

Everything was good but the weird stand out was the egg drop soup. It was sooo good! I'd definitely come back and try additional items. Ordered some things recommended by other Yelpers but TBH it wasn't the great culinary experience I expected. The lobster in garlic and vermicelli was fresh and made to order, but the flavor was completely overpowered by the sliced pork belly in garlic sauce and steamed chicken in chili sauce - both of which were like sauce with a side of meat, and if you have high BP I suggest you bypass these two dishes. I really couldn't taste the lobster after having the two dishes first. This place was busy on a rainy Saturday night so I had high hopes, we waited for 20 minutes for a table of 4! The pan fried leek dumplings surprisingly had a bit of soup in them, a meaty filling but the dough was a bit gummy. Similarly, the soup dumplings had a very thick and chewy dough and the filling had a stronger soy sauce flavor than usual. 3/5 The pork belly rolls were over saturated with chili oil and the cucumbers were warm and not refreshing. 2/5 The green beans were snappy and just the right amount of mildly spicy! 4/5 My favorite was the chicken and eggplant, the chicken was velveted wonderfully and SO tender, plus the eggplant was super soft so if you don't like mushy foods... 5/5 The stir fried rice cakes were fine and tasted like any other stir fry. 2/5 I might come back to try some other dishes I've had in China but I wouldn't come for the dumplings. read more

Since moving to Boston in 2021, Dumpling Xuan has consistently been in my top 3 favorite restaurants in the area and a restaurant I love to frequent and bring my friends! I first discovered the restaurant when I was craving dumplings late one evening heading home from the airport. I found the restaurant on Yelp and gave it a try. It was the BEST post travel detour! Parking is always easy to find in this area and the food is so delicious. The restaurant is clean with traditional round tables for larger parties and booth seating for smaller parties. Servers are very attentive and the food comes out quick. You really can't go wrong with anything you order. If you're craving traditional Taiwanese style food, this is the place to go. Items I always order when I come: scallion pancake beef roll, cabbage and pork dumplings, Taiwan style noodle soup with beef, rice cakes with preserved veggies and pork, and sauteed string beans!
