If you're used to the usual, reasonable prices for Chinese look elsewhere. Everything is a la carte, so if you order an entree you're paying extra for rice, and your bill adds up fast. For an order of cashew chicken, pan fried noodles with chicken, and orange chicken, our order with tip (for delivery), was $70. The food was average for Chinese, but I'd say the best entree was the pan fried noodles with chicken. I moved to Cambridge from Los Angeles a year ago and have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant. We decided to try Dumpling Xuan after receiving a menu in the mail but I wasn't expecting much since nothing I've tried thus far has really compared to the places I used to eat at with my family back in CA (although that's a little unfair since we were mostly getting delivery due to the pandemic. I'm planning to retry some places now that I'm vaccinated and can eat indoors). I'm so glad we went because Dumpling Xuan is now my favorite Chinese restaurant in Boston! I'd be happy to bring my picky parents here if they ever visit! We ordered: - Fried stinky tofu - Shanghai pan fried pork buns - Mini juicy pork buns - Wuxi spare ribs Everything was amazing! The pickled cabbage that came with the stinky tofu was delicious and balanced out the fried tofu well. The Shanghai pan fried pork buns were super fluffy. The xiao long bao were filled with a lot more soup than I expected. And the Wuxi spare ribs were tender and not too sweet. They also brought out a plate of watermelon slices at the end of our meal which was very refreshing. I can't wait to come back to try some of the other dishes they offer! I have been so tired over lousy food at local restaurants I almost gave up on Chinese food. Living near this restaurant, I finally gave in and gave it a try. And I was very pleasantly surprised. This isn't the type of restaurant where you get a combination plate, overflowing with gobs of general chicken. it is a restaurant that gives you a lot of choices of interesting Asian food. I started with their Taiwanese hot and sour soup. It was fantastic. Hot both in temperature in spice level, loaded with tofu and veggies, it was something special. I added on the pork and cabbage dumplings. Eight good sized dumplings filled well with pork and cabbage, which still had a little bit of crunch. It was paired with a dipping sauce that had a bit of sweetness, which was a pleasant offset. I also had the fried flat noodles with beef. This was a very nice dish with the exception that it was a bit under spiced and a little bit greasy. The beef was wonderful. This time I ordered directly from their website. I did not expect the delivery could be so fast on Saturdays. We ordered Scallion Pancake Beef Roll with Spicy Peppers, Rice Noodles with Pork and Vegetables, Wuxi Spare Rib, Five Spice Beef Shin and Minced Chicken with Spicy Peppers. Everything was absolutely amazing! The short rib can literally melt in your mouth (my new favorite dish). It's savory and sweet (in a good way, unlike Panda Express' sweetness). Usually Wuxi (无锡) is too riskily sweet for many people but the chef somehow found the balance by adding a hint of acid. I'll definitely come back for this dish. The chicken reminds me of my childhood, when all chicken were pasture raised and every bite was so savory that you didn't need to add much spice/salt/oil to season it. The fried rice noodles with pork and vegetables was also stunning. I especially like the aroma coming from stir fried eggs and pork. They serve low sodium food using fresh ingredients. Our first order with Dumpling Xuan but certainly not to be our last! We ordered delivery which arrived ahead of schedule. The soup dumplings were hot, fresh and tasty, bursting with goodness. We all enjoyed the ribs (on the bone) served with baby bok choy as a garnish - even my daughter enjoyed the ribs and normally despises them, as was the case for me with the bok choy. Lastly, we enjoyed the flavorful General Gau's chicken, not the neon, syrupy sweet generic mess that most other places dish out. Over all, we were quite pleased. The only reason why I'm giving it 3 star was because when I placed my order for delivery it took 2 hrs to get my food. I called after the food did not come at the estimated time and I was told it was delayed due to traffic, 30 mins later my food finally came in but it was piping hot, meaning they made it when called 1.5 hrs after I placed my order. I was looking for a dim sum or dumpling type place because a few friends had gone to Chinatown earlier in the evening and I was not able to join. Because I didn't know where they had gone, I looked on Yelp for the five star dumpling places. What I found was a true gem. To be fair I don't think I have ever seen this type of food prepared so carefully, and so excellently. The dishes I had (Royal Grilled Lamb, and the Beef Pancake Roll plus Spicy Cucumber) were so wonderful that I keep trying to find a way to use the word rare in one of these sentences. Rare in the sense that it is unusual to find a place that takes this much care and presents their dishes so well. I've been looking for good Chinese food places since moving to New England from CA, and this place gives me a taste of home. Bonus that it sells Taiwanese dishes, which is hard to come by in my experience. It's still not exactly like CA, but definitely authentic and one of the best places I've had in New England. I ordered the fried pork intestines, garlic sautéed water spinach, and sezchuan sliced fish. The pork intestines weren't really as crispy as they should've been, even when fresh, but the flavor was really good. The water spinach and fish tasted just like they should've. Extra points for the food not being super oily. Overall I like this place and would like to order more variety of dishes to see what they're specialities are. Also good that the staff speaks Chinese!
