Don't mistake me, this isn't a fine dining restaurant where one would take clients to show them a night on the town, but this IS Dumplings. They're done right. They're done in a variety of ways. They're plenty of choices in sauces, and if you're creative, they get creative with you. My standby is the chicken, though I'm always slightly jealous of the beef ones my friends all seem to flock to. I have a need for noodles in my life, and their peanut sauce is on point. On POINT. But on a serious note, have you tried the desert dumplings? Have you!? Because if you haven't, don't write a review. Don't even go home. Go get yourself some dumplings. The sweet potato is beyond! I don't know exactly what they put in that delicious slightly spiced slathering of sugar, but om nom yum. To tell the truth though, I mash them down first and then savor the banana, which is the perfect combo of sweet and comforting. I come here all the time, love the service, adore the cooks. Service was ok. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The dude didn't seem to know much about the menu and was less than enthusiastic when being asked questions. As for the dumplings, they were quite bland. Although sizeable and nicely priced, the taste was certainly lacking. Not very authentic. What got me to rate this place a 1 mostly is because of the soup dumplings. Soup dumplings are very special. They contain a mouthful of soup that's carefully packed inside. So extra care must be taken so that the dumpling does not rupture before it is in your mouth. However these soup dumplings were served like the others, clumped together on that rectangular paper plate. Obviously when you go to pick them up, they stick together and inevitably rip open and release all the soup onto the plate, effectively making them a regular pork dumpling. I've been coming here for years, I usually enjoy my time here and love the food. Dumplings are good but lately the filling just seems tough and dry, the service here.... the lady today especially when I went in the afternoon around 4pm, had such a nasty attitude, she acted as if the basics of her job (like providing an extra pair of chopsticks or a lid for my sauce) was annoying her, and she ignored me for atleast 5-7 mins before I could even order because she decided (after watching me walk in and walk straight up to her and order) she will go to the back andrestock her fridge right then and there. She gave everyone an attitude to everyone who wanted in, and made it seem like we were a nuisance to her for coming in and ordering, she also had her air pod in the entire time. She didn't have to say a word to you, her face literally reads "what do you want? Why are you here? Could you possibly get anymore annoying" won't be going anymore. read more

Although there are better prices down in Chinatown at places like Prosperity, there's something special about Dumpling Man. Yes their logo is undeniably cute, but there's more to it than that. They always offer some new and sometimes very tasty seasonal dumplings and their Mix 'n Match option is the perfect way to get 1 just to sample to see if its worthy of a full order. My favorite are the shrimp dumplings, I read that the chef spent a year perfecting this recipe and in my opinion he nailed it. The corn adds a great texture and the subtlety of the whitefish with the shrimp is tasty. Sometimes I opt for a special sauce and have always enjoyed their green curry or hot monster. When you go to Dumpling Man, be sure to get a card and have it stamped every time you go. After 9 meals (of 6 or more) as many dumplings as you can eat for FREE. Can't beat that! read more

When I ate the dumplings, I felt cheated and deceived: "best dumplings in the neighborhood" they are not. I've probably had worse dumplings in my life, but these were far closer to "worst" than "best." If you watch how the dumplings (particularly the fried dumplings) are prepared, you may quickly realize this is not going to be a thoroughly enjoyable culinary experience. If you are considering it, definitely PASS on the shaved ice with mango. The mango is not fresh and it's safety for consumption is highly questionable. What should be normal-looking sweetened condensed milk, appears stomach-churningly mysterious as it is dispensed from a squeezy bottle. All that said, if you think the kitchen area looks dirty you'd be right on the money. This place was last inspected by the NYC DOHMH in June 2010 and they had some pretty gross violations. I wish I had known this before I ate there in mid-July. Maybe they'll clean up their act in time for the DOHMH's issuance of letter grades to all the restaurants. But the dumplings would still suck. For dumplings in the EV that are halfway decent, go to Plump Dumpling instead. read more

I was hungry, in the area and figured I'd try this place... The dumplings come out to be about 90 cents a piece - and the minimum you can buy are 6 - steamed or fried... The dude who works seems like a real douche - although i'll give it to him that the only positive conversation was that he said goodbye when i was leaving. Anyway, so you place your order at the counter when you walk in, they give you a number and then call you when it's ready... The dumplings although are fresh (you see them making the dough and wrapping them) are not good - in fact they are worse than the frozen pot stickers you get from Trader Joes (which are pretty good). Definitely try the pork and chive or the shrimp and corn dumplings - both steamed and pan fried are delicious though the pan fried are clearly more greasy. The chicken dumplings are good but in my opinion not as good as the pork or shrimp ones. After you order, grab a spot along a counter and watch the dumpling ladies meticulously and rapidly fold dumpling after dumpling and you'll hardly notice the time passing before your freshly steamed or fried dumplings are steaming hot and ready for your consumption. Dumpling Man's dumpling sauce is slightly vinegary and delicious and the hot sauce adds a nice kick. In the summer, definitely get the shaved mango ice for dessert; they'll slowly spin a large ice block into a metal shaver and you'll get a fluffy, snow-like mountain of ice covered in sweet mango goodness. They're weirdly mushy and have corn in them. Bring cash or be willing to pay the fee at the sketchy little ATM. Be okay with staring at surly workers making the dumplings right in front of you while you eat. Don't bother ordering the monster sauce. Liking all things pumpkin or squash-related, I got suckered into trying the pumpkin pie dumplings, which really just tasted like pumpkin pie filling wrapped in boiled wonton wrappers. Not particularly delicious or memorable. What was memorable, though, was the assembly line of Chinese ladies screaming at each other while they were working. I don't know if anyone else in the place was bothered by this (they all looked kinda unfazed, to me, so maybe I'm still not a true Manhattan-ite yet), but I thought it was rather alarming that they were soo loud. Now that I think about it, though, I think I was the only person in the cafe that understands Mandarin and Cantonese, so maybe that's why I was so bothered. Minus two stars for noisy environment. I thought about how many stars to give for a while, and it eventually caused a debate between myself and the BurgerMeister over whether or not price should come into play in the rating, star-wise, of a restaurant. We decided it shouldn't. Though that's still to be determined. I really enjoy the taste of dumplings here. The seasonal soup dumplings, although not too soupy, have a really thought out blend of ginger and pork. Ginger, which can be overpowering, instead subtly highlights the pork in a way that brought me back two days in a row. The seasonal vegan dumplings (not sure what makes a dumpling vegan or not), had a great texture, being filled with crunchy carrots and fresh shiitake mushrooms. the flavor was solid, but nothing to write home about. Their regular fare is always a pleaser, but to be honest, its nothing mind-blowing. In summation, if you're in the East Village and not in Chinatown, this is a solid place to go. This review is based solely upon dumpling flavor and quality. Shrimp steamed dumplings were relatively flavorless. Additionally, each large dumpling only had one tiny piece of shrimp inside. The rest was corn. Corn? Such a strange addition (and not tasty). Using so much corn and only one piece of shrimp signifies a cheap company. Pork seared dumplings were good but definitely not delicious. I have eaten dumplings all over the city and world. These were some of the least flavorful I've ever had. Bland is the adjective I would use for the sampler, as well. The skin was good quality, but the insides were fairly blah. The skin is what gives these dumplings one star. Honestly, I wish I could undo eating these and go to Vanessa's instead. Now THAT is a flavorful and quality dumpling house. First of all the place is a dump and here is why: 1. The trash bins are directly near the places you eat. Granted the place is small, however here is where having trash bins close to where you eat is just bad all across the board: - they decide to empty the trash bins when people are there, eating!!!! trash was all over the floor, the lady who cooked dumplings was touching the trash WITHOUT gloves and their delivery boy (who snorts his snot back like a pig) helped without gloves as well. Afterwards he mopped the area while I was standing there and didnt even bother to say excuse me. 2. The tables and chairs are in desperate need of replacement. Not cleaning, as they are beyond help, but replacing. 3. The guy who takes orders may be your basic friendly, but he could use a course on professionalism in the work place. His personal cell rang and he began conversing with his friends using swear words and gossiping! The shop had over 5 customers in it! (trust me, as small as this place is, 5 is considered packed.) Granted he may be comfortable with his dumpling makers to converse with them in any fashion, but save the candid gossip for when the place is empty or how about when youre at home?! 4. The lighting was terrible. The overall ambiance was a disgusting pee color yellow that made us feel like we were in a sketchy shop with questionable meat and deplorable hygiene practices. 5. They dont wear hair nets but paper hats. Pardon me, but any time youre serving and cooking food a hair net is a must! Hair sheds and it can land in the most undesirable places. Like... a noodle salad. Luckily I saw the hair land in the noodle bowl and pointed it out to the guy before he gave it to the customer! He said thank you, but it was a clear indication that the space behind the counter, is screaming for a cleaning. --- The quality of the food is OK. My friend was not pleased with them and though I was simply eating just to get through the meal and get the hell out, I couldn't help but notice I began to dislike the taste of my vegetarian dumplings as well. Take my advice, avoid this place like the plague. Or do what my friend and I jokingly said: "Take someone, you DONT like, here." and "Take your boyfriend or girlfriend here to break up with them." So random. I've been going here for 5 years, but never wrote a review. Anyhow, Dumpling Man is right smack on St Marks. Therefore, there are tons of other options if you don't like dumplings. Nonetheless, here we go Dumpling Man. The place itself is narrow. Counter-like seating will probably seat 20 people at best. They have a decent selection as far as dumplings go, but their prices are a little on the expensive side for dumplings. I ended up getting 12 dumplings, which was around $12. $1 a dumpling, sheesh. Decent taste and whatnot. The money is in the monster sauce though. Thats a must get. All in all, its not bad for the where it is, but I feel you can just go a little further south to Chinatown and get legit dumplings for half the price. read more

***Review for their Summer Time Shaved Ice Special*** Since everyone else has already nailed the dumplings pretty well let me tackle the shaved ice. For those of you who haven't had Taiwanese Shaved Ice before...it's the bomb. Ice is light in texture just like freshly fallen snow. Toppings vary but always include some form of fresh fruit, sweat bean, and condensed milk all in a nice balance that gives the ice flavor but isn't overwhelming. The guy who made the Dumpling Man shaved ice was lame. Didn't know what the hell he was doing and didn't even care to acknowledge other customers who came in while he was messing up our order. We got a tiny portion of shaved ice topped with almost rotting room temp mango and old condensed milk. It literally turned into a sugar soup 90 secs after we got it. Brought it back to the counter for a refund and the dude was catatonic and didn't seem to care one way or another. Fail. I'll come back and get their dumplings to give them a fair chance but for now...I'd suggest staying away from this spot. read more

The skins are slightly too thick, the filling slightly bland, the specialty sauces none too special, and the space leaves more to be desired. I am down with with dumplings in general because they are pockets of love and awesomeness. When it is a nippy evening in November and after a few beverages in neighboring establishments, this seemed like the perfect spot. Well, there is setting overlooking the dumpling makers and there is seating against the opposite wall, so good for two or three people but not for groups any bigger. I prefer watching the people make my dumpling or the dumplings to replace the dumplings I am about to consume. I got an order of soup dumpling because not everywhere can you find soup dumplings, they came fresh off the steamer and the first thing I noticed was that it's skin was a little too thick. This becomes a serious issue in a soup dumpling because you have to be careful of the soup because it is going to be hot but you don't want to lose it. Otherwise I thought the filling was pretty good, and they have the different sauces you would want to dip the sauce into. read more

As a novelty eatery, Dumpling Man takes the cake (or dumpling?) when it comes to interesting fillings served in a traditional Asian vehicle. I can understand how the new-Democrat-yuppie-NYU crowd might yearn for corn (what the h---?) in their veggie offerings, but at the very least, do the classic pork dumpling some justice with proper frying or steaming as opposed to a half-hearted effort that yields something stale and crusty. Although you may think that this review is a bit harsh, this place is far more tolerable than the over-hyped Rickshaw Dumpling Bar (see the corresponding review for some choice words). Overall, there's not much to experience here. Go to K-town, Chinatown, Flushing, Astoria, Brooklyn, anywhere else for a better dish. read more

I go here mainly for one dumpling. And that dumpling, is the pumpkin dumpling. They are simply amazing! All of the delicious flavor of pumpkin pie in dumpling form with sweet cinnamon sugar syrup sauce on top. Yum. If you're a pumpkin lover like me, you'd be a fool not to try them at some point. The other dumplings are pretty good too. Quick, cheap and tasty. They are a particularly good value if you go in the late afternoon or early evening when they're doing their specials. Sometimes they have special flavors for a limited time like lamb and calamari. Their soup dumplings are best made to eat right then and there as they don't travel well and get a little thicker/mushy if they sit for too long. AS AN ASIAN, I AM VERY SURPRISED WITH THIS PLACE! I came here around 4 and ordered the after school special and got 6 pan seared pork dumplings for $4.50. The dumplings were nice and crispy on the bottom and it was actually really good. The meat didn't taste unnatural like when they put too much "pig oil" in them and it was pleasant. Sometimes, at other places, I can't eat too many dumplings because it gets to be too much and I physically can't stomach it because of the oil they put in the meat. This is place is different and I love that. However, I also decided to try the sweet dumplings which consists of pumpkin and banana and I was very disappointed with that. It didn't taste like banana or pumpkin at all. Also the pumpkin one just had too much cinnamon and I couldn't even finish it. Not a fan. As for the place itself, it's not super fancy so don't expect too much. There is limited seating and they serve the dumplings to you in a small paper bowl on top of a plastic tray. The special dumpling sauce and eating utensils are self serve as well. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised I stumbled upon this place and I will definitely be returning for good dumplings if I am in the area. The shrimp was not as exciting as I'd hoped, but still tasty for sure. Then, because I do so love chow, I went back to the counter for more. The pumpkin dumplings were hearty and sweet - such an original flavour combo! I found a new man! His name is Dum Pling Mahn. He's all I'm looking for: cute, tasty, light, healthy, and nice to look at. I had my first set of 6 dumplings yesterday: 3 steamed shrimp and 3 veggie. They were delicious! The steamed shrimp (i can also recommend the seared ones) is filled with corn and white fish, which makes it a mouth full of clean flavor. The veggie dumplings are green from vegetable juice and filled with tofu and ground veggies - so delicious even though I'm not a tofu fan at all. To end my meal I enjoyed a sweet banana dumpling called GOLDEN COIN. What deliciousness in that tiny little thing filled with banana, goji berry (tons of antioxidants for you health nuts) and pinenut. If you're looking for a quick meal that's filling and healthy you can't go wrong her. Plus, hurry in fast so you get to see that adorable reindeer dumpling man above the entrance! read more

My wife and I stumbled upon Dumpling Man while we were looking for the Belgian Room. Lucky for us! Dumpling Man is exactly what I'm looking for on a lot of days: simple, affordable and delicious. We were as curious as anything and ordered 1 pork (6 dumplings to an order) and 1 shrimp (fried). 5 minutes later, we were struggling not to burn our mouths in our rush to devour 12 perfect dumplings. I can't remember the last time we ordered twice from the same place in one day, let alone one sitting, but we immediately ordered a chicken and some soup dumplings (steamed this time) and continued our romp through dumpling heaven. The only complaint is that the shop was a little dirty. It was late night and it is mid-February (everybody tracking snow and salt), so they probably deserve a pass. read more

I guess if you're in the area and don't want to make the 15 minute walk to Chinatown, this is what you would have to settle for.
