We went to Dumpling Depot for the first time today. I heard DD gets very busy. We had our elderly mom with us, so we arrived shortly after they opened to avoid the crowds. Definitely should have brought the handicap placard so we could park in front. The parking lot is small, but we got a slot. We were seated right away. The restaurant is small and clean. We were celebrating my sister's birthday. The menu has a great variety of dim sum dishes. I wanted to try everything and ordered a lot. The food was brought out quickly and hot. Many labelled vegan options, and I suspect some of the vegetarian items are also vegan as well, just not appropriately labelled. I particularly enjoy the vegan fried rice, vegan potstickers, and vegan dumplings. Vegan potstickers and dumplings are the same filling. The chow mein was average, we got the shrimp version which had a good amount of shrimp. The green beans were disappointing, a little mushy and too much soy sauce. The green onion pancakes had the opposite problem, not enough flavor. Dining in on a Saturday night wasn't busy, but the place is super loud if there's any other groups, the high ceilings make the volume rise quickly if anyone else is talking or laughing loudly. This is my second time visiting Dumpling Depot. After a local favorite closed down, we have been looking for a spot to get great dumplings and other noodle dishes. Our first time, we ordered combination chow mein, and a few of the pork and shrimp + chive dumplings and lets just say we were kind of let down. The chow mein was super bland, literally no flavor, that one time we got it. For context, that was a takeout order. Now, coming back a second time, we came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. About 8 of us were seated immediately despite it looking pretty crowded. They were able to rearrange a few tables to accommodate all of us in one row of tables. The restaurant itself didn't appear to be the most tidy, but if the food is good, there is little to complain. We ordered a variety of dumplings, xiao long bao, chili wontons, the Shanghai pan-fried soup dumplings, and the marinated beef pancake roll. The food came out in 15-20 minutes. I don't know what changed, but the food was pretty tasty. The dumplings were decent, but the main star of the lunch was the shanghai pan-fried soup dumplings. Those were crispy, juicy, and flavorful. I would definitely order those again! Another honorable mention were the chili oil wontons! Overall, I am a little perplexed by the difference in food quality between the two visits. Seating inside is a little bit small, so it's not great for super large groups, 8 is probably the max that could be seated. The absolute best dish is the Beef Pancake Roll--it's phenomenal and a total must-order! Also, don't miss the salt and pepper Tofu; it's a delightful dish with a perfectly fried texture and flavor. We thought the chow mein, xiao long bao and pork and chive dumplings were all just OK - they weren't bad, but not our favorite either. None of these three dishes seemed to have much flavor, and the xiao long bao were disappointing since they weren't super hot and the wrapper was thicker than we prefer. Ordered for pickup through their website which is hosted through DoorDash. 4 items, $60 so seems a bit pricey but portions are quite solid so the prices are reasonable I think. I got the egg and chive dumpling QQ noodle soup. The noodles are the thick potato noodles which definitely had a chewy bouncy texture and there were 6 dumplings. However, I feel like the broth lacked flavor and tasted a bit bland. The hot and sour soup is also a bit more mild in flavor than I am used to along with the vegetable chow mein. The mapo tofu however is quite good. Nice whole tofu chunks in a thick and savory sauce, would pair great over rice. Service was quick because I arrived to pick up my order and it was already ready, given it was around 1 pm on a weekday. Traditionally raw salads aren't a part of Chinese cuisine unlike western cuisine. Use of human feces on farms for fertilizer prevented adoption of raw salads as health measure. This is a small place in a strip mall. I chose to go here because it had lots of veggie options. Capacity was at max 50% throughout our dinner on a weeknight. All except the steamed rice came in well-sealed plastic containers instead of the usual leaky cardboard boxes. The dumplings: soft, steamed, very thick and plain flour, so they're best eaten with a generous dollop of the hot sauce that comes with. But the filling is substantial and tastes of the meat it is. I also tried one stir-fry dish, a beef with scallions that was also soft, plain, but tasty, and chicken winglets with cumin, which were very lightly fried, quite tasty though not of cumin. The soup in the dumpling was just ok. Same as the wonton, good filling to wrapping ratio. Dumpling was not too doughy. This cost more at 6 pieces for $9.95. Good place for vegetarians. The Vegetarian Dumplings was the surprise. No meat but really tasty, so good. Vegetable chow mein had well seasoned noodles; soy flavor and had the smoky taste of wok hei.
