Dumplings are staple foods in China that every families knows how to make and have their own recipes. This is a highly competitive category in Chinese food subcategories. Yet, this place survived over a decade by now. Because they made excellent dumplings, have a genuine friendly service that feel like family-run, and keep the place clean, serviceable, and not ornate. We tried 3 kinds of dumplings, chive boxes, and a noodle-like dish 涼皮. I would say avoid the latter and just freely choose whatever filling that suit your mood. We went to Dumpling Depot for the first time today. I heard DD gets very busy. We had our elderly mom with us, so we arrived shortly after they opened to avoid the crowds. Definitely should have brought the handicap placard so we could park in front. The parking lot is small, but we got a slot. We were seated right away. The restaurant is small and clean. We were celebrating my sister's birthday. The menu has a great variety of dim sum dishes. I wanted to try everything and ordered a lot. The food was brought out quickly and hot. Parking here can be pretty difficult. We were luckily able to get a spot right as someone else was leaving. There's open seating, and a QR code to order. I have ordered work lunch from here many times and it is consistently good. Many labelled vegan options, and I suspect some of the vegetarian items are also vegan as well, just not appropriately labelled. I particularly enjoy the vegan fried rice, vegan potstickers, and vegan dumplings. Vegan potstickers and dumplings are the same filling. This is my second time visiting Dumpling Depot. After a local favorite closed down, we have been looking for a spot to get great dumplings and other noodle dishes. Our first time, we ordered combination chow mein, and a few of the pork and shrimp + chive dumplings and lets just say we were kind of let down. The chow mein was super bland, literally no flavor, that one time we got it. For context, that was a takeout order. Now, coming back a second time, we came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. About 8 of us were seated immediately despite it looking pretty crowded. They were able to rearrange a few tables to accommodate all of us in one row of tables. The restaurant itself didn't appear to be the most tidy, but if the food is good, there is little to complain. We ordered a variety of dumplings, xiao long bao, chili wontons, the Shanghai pan-fried soup dumplings, and the marinated beef pancake roll. The food came out in 15-20 minutes. I don't know what changed, but the food was pretty tasty. The dumplings were decent, but the main star of the lunch was the shanghai pan-fried soup dumplings. Those were crispy, juicy, and flavorful. I would definitely order those again! Another honorable mention were the chili oil wontons! Overall, I am a little perplexed by the difference in food quality between the two visits. Dumpling Depot is a fantastic find! The food here truly has that wonderful, homey, authentic flavor that warms the soul. Both the dumplings and the Beef Noodle Soup are excellent comfort food choices. Seating inside is a little bit small, so it's not great for super large groups, 8 is probably the max that could be seated. The absolute best dish is the Beef Pancake Roll--it's phenomenal and a total must-order! Also, don't miss the salt and pepper Tofu; it's a delightful dish with a perfectly fried texture and flavor. The chow mein was average, we got the shrimp version which had a good amount of shrimp. The green beans were disappointing, a little mushy and too much soy sauce. The green onion pancakes had the opposite problem, not enough flavor. Dining in on a Saturday night wasn't busy, but the place is super loud if there's any other groups, the high ceilings make the volume rise quickly if anyone else is talking or laughing loudly. The ordering system is on a QR code but it seems a little flawed, there were dishes in our cart already when we sat down, maybe from a prior group. Love this little hole in the wall restaurant and recommend it for those casual nights when you're craving a no frills XLB experience. This place has tons of parking on the street and in the parking lot. As you approach the entrance, the fragrant smells of delicious juicy dumplings fill the air. We were lucky to walk into the packed restaurant but still managed to grab a table. We ordered the XLB which was delicious, juicy, and wrapped in a delicate skin! My boyfriend and I came on a Wednesday night and ordered the garlic green beans, pork and chive dumplings, chow mein, xiao long bao, and the beef pancake roll. We liked the beef pancake roll as it was something new and different for us, and the wrap was nice and crispy. We thought the chow mein, xiao long bao and pork and chive dumplings were all just OK - they weren't bad, but not our favorite either. None of these three dishes seemed to have much flavor, and the xiao long bao were disappointing since they weren't super hot and the wrapper was thicker than we prefer. I normally like pork and chive combinations, but these dumplings felt extra chivey with little meaty flavor. I've been coming to Dumpling Depot for years, but moved further away a while ago and haven't been back recently. When I visited on Sunday night, I was sadly underwhelmed. Ordered for pickup through their website which is hosted through DoorDash. 4 items, $60 so seems a bit pricey but portions are quite solid so the prices are reasonable I think. I got the egg and chive dumpling QQ noodle soup. The noodles are the thick potato noodles which definitely had a chewy bouncy texture and there were 6 dumplings. However, I feel like the broth lacked flavor and tasted a bit bland. The hot and sour soup is also a bit more mild in flavor than I am used to along with the vegetable chow mein. The mapo tofu however is quite good. Nice whole tofu chunks in a thick and savory sauce, would pair great over rice. Service was quick because I arrived to pick up my order and it was already ready, given it was around 1 pm on a weekday. The XLB had no flavor and tasted like a normal dumpling which also didn't come with ginger but they did have the sauces on the table and the braised beef noodle soup was okay. I like how they serve you tea right away rather than having to ask for it after they bring around water. ~~Parking: Located at the end of a strip mall, but the rest of the strip mall seems pretty dead so I doubt you'd ever have issues finding parking. ~~Service: Okay. You're allowed to choose your own seat depending on how many people are in your party, you order on your phone using the QR code at your table, they bring you the food, and then they just come around when you pay but they don't give you a receipt. ~~Worst Part: How cold it was inside the restaurant. This produces a tender bite which you can't replicate at home with normal AP flour. There are now many dumpling restaurants. There are some mega owners who have multiple outlets under different names and some chains from China w stores here aside from DTF. They sell Chinese salads like celery/black fungus in a light oil, chinese black vinegar sauce. Like a Chinese version of a balsamic vinagrette. No added sugar. Traditionally raw salads aren't a part of Chinese cuisine unlike western cuisine. Use of human feces on farms for fertilizer prevented adoption of raw salads as health measure. This is a small place in a strip mall. I chose to go here because it had lots of veggie options. Capacity was at max 50% throughout our dinner on a weeknight. Overall food was nice but didn't wow me. salt and pepper tofu 4/5 - loved the texture but a little more flavor would be nice pea shoot with garlic 5/5 - this was the most expensive thing we ordered at 17 dollars, and one of the most expensive things on the menu. I love pea shoot in general though pretty hard to mess up mapo tofu 3.5/5 - mixed feelings from friends on this one, overall I liked the flavor but the slurry it was in was kinda not a good texture .
