We walked in for dinner around 6 and got a table for 2. Throughout our meal, there was a line out the door and a small crowd of Chinese families- a good sign! We shared the pork XLB, pan fried dumplings, beef roll, and spicy wontons (not pictured). Ordering was easy through QR, food came out quickly, and was very good (some tweaks could have made it great). We'll be back to try more. - pork xiao long bao: soft, soupy, and the perfect balance of savory without feeling too fatty. The skin could have been thinner and did feel a bit gummy at the top. - pan fried dumplings: amazing! Soupy inside and perfectly fried on the outside. - beef rolls: oily, flaky, and delicious. But there was barely any sauce! Please include much more sauce next time. - spicy wontons: way spicier than I expected. My boyfriend loved these. Super soft wontons in chili oil with a touch of nutty sesame. Reminded me a bit of the dandan taste.
I loved it! The food was delicious and super fresh. I went on a Thursday night and it was surprisingly busy. There was a waitlist for a table and people were coming in to pick up takeout. I can see why this place is so popular. The restaurant itself is small so I would call ahead if you're coming in with a party of more than 4 people. I took off a star because they did forget one of our orders, so we never received it and just had them remove it from the bill. They were busy and there was only one waitress so I can see how that would happen, but they were definitely understaffed.

When I arrived, there was a party of 3 ahead of me waiting. They handed me the waiting list and so I wrote my name down. We are just standing around waiting for a table although there were a couple open. My assumption was to wait to be seated and not just seat ourselves. I see one lady working tables, serving food to tables. I wait patiently and don't try to get her attention. A few minutes later, a party of 2 walk in. They get the lady's attention and she seats them at a table. I was kind of disappointed that they were seated before me and they didn't bother asking if we were waiting for a table. After that, I cross my name off the waiting list and sit at a table with just 2 seats. The lady sees me and I ask if it's okay. She said it was. At the table there is a QR code you scan for the menu. I order the Pork Xiao Long Bao and the Zha Jiang Noodles on my phone. The dumplings come out pretty quick. Then the noodles come. The Pork Xiao Long Bao was good. It had a lot of juice and it was pretty tasty. I liked the spoon they give you and the two sauces they also give you. Very flavorful. The Zha Jiang Noodles were good as well. The noodles were nice and chewy, elastic. All the ingredients went well together and tasted good together. Overall, the food was good, but can't say the same about service. There was only one person waiting on all the tables.
I struggled a bit with this one. Immediately when I walked in I noticed there was a QR code for ordering. I prefer a dedicated server. I am someone who has specific dietary restrictions and needs. You simply cant ask a QR code those things. That was a huge negative for me. The QR Code came around COVID times and never left. We ordered the following: 1. Onion Pancake - 1 start - the flavor was there, but it was dripping grease. Would not get it again. 2. Beef Roll - 1 star - i really wanted to like this one. It was extremely oily (like the other pancake as they were made the same way) and I couldnt enjoy how the outside of the roll was warm/hot and the inside (the meat) was literally cold to the touch. It just tasted really off to me. Would not get again. 3. Shrimp fried Rice - 4 stars - great flavor, fresh, lots of rice. Would get again. 4. Steamed Pork Bun - 4 stars - great flavor, huge and delicious. Would get again. 5. Sautéed Green Bean - 5 stars - excellent flavor! Would get again. The place was super busy with to go orders, more so than in house. But the amounts of oil on the food and the lack of a dedicated server would keep me from coming back, unfortunately. The service was friendly enough, but not enough to bring me back.
Dumpling 85 is located right down the street from Costco down here in San Ramon. It's located in a shopping center that, which at the time, was a soon to be open Tous Les Jour at the other end of the shopping center. The location is nicely done, has some good seating out in front of the restaurant and when you get in it looks like most of the other modern dumpling places, so it's a nice sit down spot for your dumpling needs. The menus are also right on the tables through a QR code, but if you need a physical menu they do offer those too. It's a typical modern dumplings place, so the menu will be about the same as the others. I won't comment too much on that since it's pretty much cookie cutter at this point. Price wise, it's a bit expensive, but for this area it's not too bad. About on part as other similar cuisines. Service here was good enough, but they were pretty slow when we were here that day with our pan fried buns, and we were the only other table there still waiting on food so that wasn't great. Now, let's get right down to the food. One of the first things we tried at our table was the beef noodle soup. I have to say, this was not a very good beef noodle soup at all. The beef wasn't very tender and kind of stringy, and didn't quite have the right texture or even flavored properly. The soup stock tasted like nothing. For a beef noodle soup, it's way too bland. While the portions of this was comparable, the entire dish was just not what I had hoped for. Noodles was okay, Q enough, but the rest of everything kinda ruined it. Next up, let's talk about the pan fried buns. Honestly, some of the worst sheng jian baos I've ever had. It was completely dry inside, and not even the meat had juices coming out of it. I feel as if the meat they used for their baos are very lean meat, which is a terrible idea considering that the fats and juices that come out during the cooking process is what makes it so good. The meat was tough, chewy, and didn't have any juices coming out of it whatsoever. The outside was fine, but this certainly feels more like it had something to do with their actual ingredient than the cooking method itself. Lastly, I do want to talk about the beef roll here, which ironically for an appetizer, was the highlight of the day. They do their beef rolls here very differently than most places, as the outer roll is really more like an actual full fluffy onion pancake wrapped around the contents on the inside, so when you eat it it's very crispy and had a lot of good onion pancakey texture to it. The contents inside, while not super traditional, all went well together. The beef was good with the lettuce that was put inside. It also had some of the other basic stuff inside that you would usually find in a beef roll. The sauce they used is the same as the peking duck sauce for those familiar, so if you enjoy that, you'll like this beef roll. Overall, Dumpling 85 was a disappointment for sure. While the decor was nicely down, in a quieter area away from the crazy Costconess around the corner, and the portions actually wasn't bad, the food quality here for some of the stuff just wasn't good. Even though the beef roll here shined above all else, it's not a good sign for a bao place when your bao is not any good, at least with the pan fried one. Maybe I can try the soup bao if I ever go back, but I'm not all that confident it will be that much better since it's appears an ingredients issue. If you really want bao in the area, this isn't the worst option around perhaps, but suffers from sub-par quality in what should be their premier dishes.
We always order to go. Came to this place after work and hubby suddenly wanted for xiao long bao. Ordered our usual from their menu, food quality has been keeping up. Fresh cucumber salad: cucumber is fresh, sauce was well balanced, not too sour or too much of the garlic Beef roll: My favorite of all time, the pan fried wrap has a special fragrance and you can tell it is freshly made. Suggest to finish right away for it won't taste good overnight. Pork, shrimp and chive steamed dumplings: Recommended by the owner. Never thought of order steamed dumplings cuz I normally don't quite like the texture when it is steamed. Surprisingly it tastes awesome! From the steamed wrap to the filling, everything made just right. I enjoyed this dish so much! Pork xiao long bao: Quality is good, but dine in tastes a lot better while it's still hot.
One of the few places in the area serving good XLBs and authentic chinese noodle soups. This place has QR code menus where you can order online at the table. You can also ask a server to put in the order for you or give recommendations, be patient with their English if you don't know any Chinese, otherwise order in Chinese. This place can get pretty busy at times, but they also have a few tables outside for outdoor patio seating. The only draw back here is that the pig ear isn't always super consistent, BUT sometimes it's really good.
3.25 stars on the strength of the yummy beef roll. Best version of this dish I've found. Would return just for this Didn't enjoy the rest of the meal. The noods and the skins of both the wonton and dumplings were too thick and doughy for my taste. Kinda reminded me of the homemade version of the frozen wontons at Safeway. Taste is subjective tho. Got to try different things on the menu to find what works for each individual. Yelp helps but only as a guide because again, different people have different preferences. But the beef roll was a perfect blend of contrasting textures and flavors. Pancake is pan fried but didn't taste greasy. It was crispy on the outside, chewy inside. Each bite was salty and tender, sweet from the hoisin and vegetal from the fresh greens. Only thing lacking was the beef. In the past that roll was packed with multiple layers of sliced meat, today it was only 1 slice thick.
Great casual spot for dumplings in San Ramon. We ordered the cucumber salad which never misses. The xiao long bao was great - hot soup with very clean taste. The pan fried dumplings were also great, and also very hot. Overall, I really enjoyed everything I got and will be coming back to try other dishes. The service was fast and it's awesome to see them making the dumplings in the back.
Came here on a Saturday around1:40pm. There were lots of ppl inside but plenty of table outside. We dined outside since it was a nice day. We got the pan fried dumplings. It was actually deep fried on the bottom! I'm not supposed to have fired food for my stomach problem so I could only eat the top part and the inside. Usually, this buns is pan fried and not deep fried. Wish I knew. The XLB was ok. Did not wow me. The ones we had in Fremont recently were better. The beef stew noodle was ok. The beef brisket was not tender. Soup had mild spicy taste. So again not good for my stomach. Most likely won't be back .
Dishes we ordered, from my most to least favorite: 1. Xiao long bao - skin was thin and soup was flavorful. Loved that they had the xiao long bao spoons too! 2. Sheng jian bao - not the best I've had, but it was done well! There was a lot of soup inside and it didn't seep into the buns. 3. Chive pockets - the menu said it had shrimp but couldn't taste or see any. Taste wise, pretty average and could have been a bit crispier. 4. Beef rolls - not enough beef, too much lettuce and cilantro. They also put a lot of sauce, and it was too salty for my taste. Ordering was done through a QR code, very convenient for us as we didn't have to flag the server down. Food came out relatively fast. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back but I'd come again if I'm in the area.

Really good dumpling spot! Was craving some dumplings in the San Ramon area and came upon this gem. We ordered the beef roll, pork XLB, pan fried pork dumplings and noodles. All were a hit! Highly recommend coming here if you are craving dumplings. Service was quick and attentive, the restaurant had a cool modern vibe with outside seating. I'll be coming back! read more

Loveee me some good noodles and dumplings. I really enjoyed their Lanzhou noodles, it was chewy with a bite. The broth had great flavor and the perfect amount of food. Their shrimp and pork dumplings was also really tasty with a thin skin wrapper (those are the best!) Unfortunately, a few pieces were undercooked -_- They offer outdoor seating and plenty of indoor seats. You can view the front counter where all the dumpling wrapping action happens. read more
When I come visit my sister, I always see this little place. Finally, I got to try it and it was delicious. The dumplings tasted like comfort food and I wanted to bathe in the sauce/juices. I enjoyed the noodles as well--simple but good. I will totally come here again! read more
Legit everything that we had here was an umami bomb on my taste buds. Not a single thing that we had was bad. We had; Pork XLB - Pork was juicy, the soup was super flavorful and had a next level depth of flavor, eaten with a little bit of vinegar just elevated the dish. Spicy pork XLB - My favorite dish of the night. The spiciness was subtle but you definitely know that it was there. Pork was succulent and juicy and the soup was like pure liquid flavor. Pan fried pork buns - Nice and crispy on the bottom and juicy and succulent on the inside. The outer dough layer wasn't too tough and was very delicious as well. Zha jiang noodles - Very saucy and the meat on top plus the veggies on the side made for the ultimate mixed noodle combo. The cucumber and carrots plus the other greens added a crunchy and fresh texture to an otherwise very Al dente noodle dish. I must come back to try everything else on the menu, solid spot! read more
Solid xlb place! Came here on a Friday night around 7pm and they were busy with dining and take out orders but food still came out super fast. The xlb was juicy and flavorful and the dough wasn't too thick. I also got the spicy xlb too but it was too sour so we didn't finish it. The beef noodles portion was huge but and solid but better with chili oil. read more

Came here for lunch with the boo. There was ample seating so we were seated immediately. Obviously we had been starving for days given the amount of food we ordered! No, but really, everything looked so good we had to try it all... #Zha Jiang Noodles - Delicious! Good flavoring of the meat sauce. Wish the noods had slightly more chew though #Cucumber salad - Loved this. Extra strong garlic kick makes your sweat smell garlicky for days. #Beef noodle soup - This was ok. The noodles were aite and the beef was very tender. The broth had lots of white pepper in it. #Chili oil wonton - This was the most surprising in terms of flavor. I loved the quantity and how juicy the meat was on the inside. Was not spicy at all, but the flavor bomb was great. #Beef roll - GET THIS. The pancake part was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Decent amount of meat as well. #Spicy Pig ear - Loved the thickness of the cut. The hot oil was the numbing spice kind. Soo gooood! #XLB - Obviously this was the main event. The skin was incredibly thin, which made for an amazing bite...if they were intact. But 3 of the 8 came out already ripped with their sacred juices spilled out *cries softly inside* Still I would come back to eat these again. All in all a wonderful place to get quality food with decent portions. Classic Chinese restaurant with no nonsense ordering and expedient service. Although the name of the game is dumplings at Dumpling 85, this rating is for their noodles and beef roll. The ginger and scallion noodle dish appears to be simple but don't be fooled. This minimalist dish was off the charts delicious. The abundance of scallion oil with the slightly sweet, and somewhat nutty stir fry sauce, combined with the chew of the noodle created a great taste and mouth feel. The beef roll was wrapped in their onion pancake. Packed with tender sliced beef, lettuce, green onions, coriander, and plum sauce. Imagine a combination of a chewy outer layer, followed by the crunch of the lettuce, the tenderness of the beef, and sweetness of the sauce all in one bite. A savory bite each time. If there was a bit of acidity it might have elevated it even more. Great portions and it still was impressive the next day. Not too much to say about the dumplings as it tasted surprisingly sweet to me. I'm accustomed to encountering dumplings more on the savory side. read more

Their most popular dish is the pork Xiao Long bao but what I really like is their beef roll. Their beef roll is the best I have tried so far and they have the perfect amount of crunch and meat! Finally! A place with good xlbs and pan fried dumplings in the Trivalley! Glad we tried this place today. Nice well designed/decorated restaurant. Service was good. Our favorites on our first visit was the xlb, pan fried dumpling and onion pancake. XLBs were juicy and sweet. The meat had a good texture. Skin was thin! Pan fried dumplings: nicely fried, juicy, just yum! Onion pancake: nice, flaky, crispy Other items we ate: Beef noodle soup: beef was tender and flavorful. Soup had color but was actually quite bland. Was looking for some bok choy or greens but didn't have any. Basically, meat and noodles and parsley. Beef roll: usually not a fav but wanted to try it. We had Spicy Pork Wontons, cucumber salad, and chicken corn pot sticker. Wonton and cucumbers were perfect. Pot sticker feels a bit more like pan fried, but still pretty good. QR code ordering system is a bit confusing, but they were happy to take order directly from us so no big deal. Will certainly come back for their other dishes. read more

This place is tucked inside a plaza. Their sign wasn't the most obvious at night when I went for dinner so it took a hot minute to find. Upon seating, we checked out the menu using the QR code on the table. I originally thought we were supposed to order through our phones, but saw the server take another table's order in person so thought we needed to order via someone. We originally ordered the pork soup dumpling, pan fried buns, and beef rolls. Somehow there must've been some miscommunication that we wanted potstickers instead of the pan fried buns and we got that instead. I didn't even notice that we got the wrong order (since I was so concentrated in just eating the food when the food arrived) until I took a bite of the potsticker and realized it wasn't the pan fried bun. Since their system said we ordered potstickers (although I know I didn't order potstickers), we just separately ordered the pan fried buns. I guess next time I'll just use my phone to order to avoid any human error. The food all arrived pretty quickly after we ordered. Pork soup dumpling - 3.5/5. The flavor was on point, but there wasn't enough soup in the soup dumpling. So it was more like eating a small dumpling. Pan fried buns - 4/5. The bottom part of the bun was a lot more fried than I would've liked. There was a large chunk of just bun on the bottom. The taste reminded me of Chinese doughnuts. There was more soup in the pan fried buns than the soup dumpling! Beef rolls - 5/5. Really good! Highly recommend! Potstickers - 3/5. Really crunchy exterior which is good for potstickers. However, it wasn't anything special. Overall, their food tasted pretty good and authentic. read more

As I was browsing through Yelp restaurants, this one caught my attention as I had never tried and I was in the mood for some xiao long bao (XLB). This place replaced the previous sushi place that I didn't quite like and this establishment was very COVID-ready: Had the menu QR code on the table and you could place an order straight from it. Very convenient as I didn't have to order from the counter and take my sweet time to decide and order. Well, it didn't take me long as I wanted their XLB as it should be one of their signature items. I also like beef rolls so I ordered that as well. I didn't have to wait too long for the food to arrive at the table. The beef roll was up to par. The XLB was pretty comparable to iShanghai Delight so now I have options for XLB in San Ramon. This was a solid place with good food. I'm not sure how crowded it usually gets during lunch hours as I came in after 1:30pm. I would come back and I would try their dumpling and pan fried buns. read more

We ordered take-out today and we were disappointed. We decided to try some vegetables this trip so we tried the broccoli with garlic. The garlic was uncooked and so overpowering that it created a burning sensation and acidic taste. The Pan Fried Bao was a bit over fried but still good but unlike our first visit. We also ordered Shrimp Fried Rice which was over seasoned with too much garlic. The shrimp were about half the size compared to our first visit. In fairness to the chef I wasn't sure if the Fried Rice had too much garlic so it tasted more like pungent Garlic Fried Rice or if the excessive garlic from the broccoli was causing a residual taste. I ate all of the broccoli garlic first, then the buns and the fried rice last. We like Dumpling 85 but between a 5 star visit the first time and a liberal 3 stars this time they are at a 4 star rating in my humble opinion. Whatever you do, avoid the vegetables with garlic or ask if the garlic is pan fried or roasted before ordering. We haven't given up on Dumpling 85, we like the food and will visit again but will avoid the vegetables with garlic. We still recommend giving this place a try, eat there and hopefully it will be like our first visit, 5 stars. read more

I love finding a new place with great dumplings close to home. We tried this new restaurant and were all impressed with the variety of dumplings. Everything was delicious. We tried a variety of items. Some favorites- Pork XLB- thin skins, very juicy pork filling. Very well made and delicious! Beef rolls-crispy scallion pancake wrapped around thin sliced tender beef, green onion, cucumbers and hoisin sauce. Very good. I prefer the pancake to be thinner, but everyone at our table loved it. Steamed dumplings-we ordered three different flavors and they were all good. I liked that they looked different and the fillings were very flavorful. Pan fried pork buns-we loved these!! These buns have the thicker more bread like outside that have been perfectly pan fried. The inside pork filling is extra juicy. Cucumber salad-very refreshing, crunchy and garlicky. Zha Jiang Mein-everyone makes this dish differently and I really like it here. Tasty seasoned minced pork, eggs, veggies and cilantro is served with thick noodles. Mixed up really well. This is a dish I loved growing up and it was so good! Ordering was made simple by scanning the code for the menu at the table. We even paid online. Everything came out quickly. Chinese restaurant that is known for their dumplings. After being seated, you scan a QR code to place the order through their website, which is sent to the kitchen. Their popular items are their xiao long baos, steamed dumplings, and steamed buns. My favorite dish here was their pan fried pork buns that were very savory and pan-fried until golden. I did not really enjoy their regular pork buns as they were a bit sour. Overall the service was efficient and the waiters were attentive. They did an excellent job in clearing out tables immediately after guests left, wiping them down, and assisting guests with orders and handling payment. read more

Today, we ordered 2 orders of xiao long bao, 2 orders of green onion pancakes, an order of zha jiang myun, and the fried beef roll. The best thing on the menu was the beef roll. It reminded me of the meat pies that we used to always get from Henry Hunan's in San Francisco. This means that the meat was tender but the entire roll was pretty greasy and only tasted better when we added both spicy sauces on each bite. The zha jiang myun was pretty dry and didn't really taste like anything because it was so bland. The xiao long bao was adored by our nine year old because she liked the filling, but the adults didn't really like the filling and were disappointed with the lack of broth in the soup dumplings. However, the sake was nice and hot and had a normal flavor which was appreciated. Also, there is ample, free parking. read more

Just opened Dumpling 85 replaces Sakiya Sushi. As far as the decor and nothing has changed with the exception of a couple more televisions. The menu is all things tied together by noodles and dumplings. Yesterday, lunch was busy with lots of curious patrons. We decided to try a variety of dishes. Zha Jiang noodles 4 stars good presentation, light on the meat sauce flavors, thick noodles. Pork shrimp and chives dumplings 4 stars nice skins, generous shrimp filling. XLB 3 stars good skins, nice soup inside. Tiny pork fillings fingertip sized minus star for the tiny filling. Beef roll 3 stars not a beef roll by its Chinese name it's more like a empanada or turnover. Nice fried outer crust, filling is more like a beef dumpling filling minus star. One take away for the new restaurant. The dipping sauces needs to be refined. Traditional XLB ginger sauce is not made with Chinese red vinegar. Probably needs some garlic, sesame oil, and hot chili options . Service is ok. Plenty of parking. read more
