I was referred to EmergoOrtho by a fill-in PCP due to a herniated disc compressing nerve roots. I already had an MRI before the appointment but was never told I needed to bring the images. When I arrived, they said they could access them. I paid a $50 copay, only to be told I needed another X-ray. The doctor came in for barely two minutes, said a steroid shot would be faster than a pack, then immediately left. I was told it needed to be scheduled and would take about a week. Meanwhile, I was told to just take Tramadol and do PT. No one followed up. I had to call them. Eventually, they set the appointment for August 5 -- nearly two weeks after my first visit. I took time off work, and had my wife do the same to drive me. But on August 4 at 3:30 PM, I got a call from Ruby saying they needed the MRI images. I asked why, since they claimed to have them last time and even did a new X-ray. She said she'd check. 20 minutes later, she called back and said they couldn't get the images from radiology and would have to cancel my appointment. Cancel -- after all that pain, waiting, time off, and insurance approval. I asked why the appointment was canceled when it was scheduled for the next day and I had done everything on my end. She was completely indifferent. I personally called the radiology provider and got through right away. They sent the images and I also drove to pick up a CD copy just in case. I called EmergoOrtho back immediately asking not to cancel my appointment. I was told Ruby was the only one who could help me. The woman said she'd have Ruby call me back that day. It's now 8:30 PM and still no call. Let me be clear -- I am a disabled veteran, in constant pain, with numb, burning fingers, unable to sleep or function properly. I served this country, and this is the level of care and compassion I get? You all should be ashamed. You clearly do not care about patients -- only copays and procedures. You dragged me through weeks of appointments, calls, and chaos, only to leave me in pain and cancel without cause. This will be the last orthopedic group I ever deal with. I wouldn't send my worst enemy here. You failed me. You failed your duty. Close the doors.

Now I have permanent neck and back pain which I never had before The operations. He did not help at all and only have me new pain I never had before. The said part is he things he helped me??? Only after all the operations did he say I would have been in a wheelchair if I did not have them. Not true he is only trying to save is skin with such lies. I am highly satisfied about my experience with Dr. Shadduck and EmergeOrtho!…read more Six weeks ago Dr. Shadduck operated on me to repair a small hernia on the right side of my lower abdomen, called an inguinal hernia. About 15 years ago I had a similar hernia repair on the left lower abdomen (which was done at UNC) and therefore I have some comparative experience. Before choosing Dr. Shadduck I also saw another surgeon (at one of the big medical facilities) for an opinion. Below I'll go through the numerous things that I liked about Dr. Shadduck and EmergOrtho: 1) Getting an appointment for an initial assessment was straightforward and easy. I really liked not having to navigate a big institutional medical organization (i.e. - UNC & Duke) when calling on the phone. 2) Going to this initial appointment with Dr. Shadduck was again much easier at the EmergeOrtho location than the huge parking decks at UNC/Duke. When I arrived on time, the receptionists were great . . very friendly and efficient. The waiting area was not crowded and I only had a short wait before getting into the exam room. 3) Compared to the first surgeon I had seen for an assessment I found Dr. Shadduck was MUCH more through in his exam. The first surgeon I saw appeared to only take a superficial look at the hernia and they also had a student doctor in the room watching. By contrast, Dr. Shadduck took a good deal of time to assess the hernia both with me standing and also lying down (not done by the first surgeon). I feel like he really did a very complete assessment of my condition. 4) He said that my hernia was small and it was not necessary that it be repaired at this time, however after learning that I spend about half of each year on a boat in remote regions of the Bahamas, he thought that this tipped the scales in favor of having the procedure . . . but he was not insistent or pushy with his opinion. 5) Something that I found quite remarkable when getting assessed by Dr. Shadduck was how exceedingly patient he was in explaining everything about the possible surgery and then gave me all the time I needed to ask questions. I find it rather rare when a physician is such a good listener. 6) Scheduling for the surgery was easy and it was performed at a 'hospital' right across the street from EmergeOrtho called "North Carolina Specialty Hospital". 7) The process of having the surgery went smoothly and I felt like all the staff (nurses, anesthesiologist, etc.) were excellent and everything went according to plan. 8) My recovery process seemed easier than the same surgery I had ~ 16 years prior. I was offered a prescription for opioid type pain relievers but ended up not needing them (Advil worked fine). 9) Two weeks post surgery I came back to see Dr Shadduck for a follow-up and everything was healing up as expected. Again, he was great in talking with me and answering all my questions. My only small complaint is that I had a fairly long wait to be seen (20 minutes waiting room & 35 exam room) but this is small potatoes relative to my overall experience. In summary, if you think you may need the kind of surgery that Dr. Shadduck offers I can HIGHLY recommend choosing him as your surgeon!

I asked for the tip to not look as bulbous and to be moved in closer to my face and now it sticks out farther than before. I addressed my concerns with Dr. Finn, mentioned he forgot to smooth the side lumps on my bridge and flatten the bulge of cartilage on the right side of the tip and the shift in his attitude was disheartening. I then got told I was "chasing perfection"! He agreed to fix the bridge, but wanted to actually widen the tip. Absolutely not! I did/do have a big nose so widening the tip that was already too wide was not an option, especially if the bridge would have been smaller! Anyways, it's been six years and my nose looks even worse now. Nostrils flare more when I smile, a piece of cartilage is prolapsing into my left nostril, it's more crooked and droopy. I did have a complex case so I feel like if you have a simple fix or two, then he would do a good job. I just really didn't appreciate the attitude I got when discussing a revision and I feel like for 8K it should have looked much better!!!

I had completed the pre check in and I clicked "I'm here" to confirm i was in the waiting room. My instructions dais to take a seat until I was called. There were two people waiting when I came in.And they were both taken within ten minutes of my arriving. More people came in and were taken back while I sat there and waited. Half hour after my appointment time, I went to the counter to let them know that I was unable to wait any longer because I had another appointment to get to. The person at the counter said that the online check in doesn't work.And that they could take me at that time. Unfortunately, since I had given them as much time as I could.I was not able to get my blood work done there.I will be rebooking in a different location. It seems to me that if the location knows that they're online check in system is not working.And they see someone sitting in their waiting room for forty five minutes unattended that perhaps they should check in and see if perhaps that person did the online check in. This was an unsatisfactory experience and I will avoid this facility.

I had an appointment scheduled for more than six months with Dr. Karen Jones in Duke Neurosurgery…read more I traveled from Hawaii at very significant financial, physical, and emotional cost for this consultation. Prior to the visit, Duke had access to over 40 pages of medical records, imaging summaries, neurological evaluations, and supporting documentation regarding my medically complex condition, including genetically confirmed CMT2A2, prior cervical and lumbar fusion surgeries, severe chronic pain, and progressive neurological decline. Despite this extensive preparation and the length of time the appointment had been scheduled, I never actually saw Dr. Jones. I was seen only by a nurse practitioner, who informed me that based primarily on the most recent MRI imaging I brought with me, there was "no surgical target" and nothing Neurosurgery could offer. At no point during the six months leading up to this visit was it clearly communicated to me that the entire consultation outcome would depend almost exclusively on direct review of one recent MRI disc rather than the extensive records already submitted. I repeatedly expressed concern before traveling that I did not want to come all the way from Hawaii if my case was not considered appropriate for the department. I was never told that the consultation might effectively be ruled out based on the interpretation of a single MRI study. I was later told that this had supposedly been communicated through MyChart, but I never received such a message. The interaction itself was deeply distressing and lacking in compassion. I was already emotionally overwhelmed due to repeated referral difficulties within the Duke system and the extreme burden of navigating complex medical care while in severe pain. Rather than receiving guidance, continuity, or referral assistance, I felt abruptly dismissed. No meaningful next-step referrals were offered during the visit despite my medically complex history and the fact that multiple physicians in Hawaii, including my neurologist and primary care physician, believed further neurosurgical evaluation was appropriate. I was particularly distressed that nerve conduction studies and neurological findings from my treating physicians appeared to be brushed aside without serious discussion. My understanding from my neurologist was that chronic nerve compression below my lumbar fusion remained a significant concern, especially given the limitations of imaging interpretation in the presence of spinal hardware. I also found it upsetting that my BMI was highlighted prominently in the chart despite being only slightly above the "normal" range. In the context of a patient presenting with severe chronic pain, neurological disease, prior fusion surgeries, and significant functional decline, this felt unnecessary and shaming. By the end of the encounter, I was emotionally devastated. I had already requested a social worker before the appointment because I feared how emotionally fragile I had become during this process. The social worker who later met with me witnessed the severity of my distress. My concern is not simply that surgery was declined. I understand specialists may disagree on treatment options. My concern is the way this process was handled: the lack of transparency before travel, the absence of direct physician consultation after such an extensive wait and preparation process, the dismissive tone of the interaction, and the complete lack of coordinated transition planning or compassionate referral guidance for a medically vulnerable out-of-state patient.
