DO NOT GO TO UNC REX Raleigh FOR FOOT SURGERY DUE TO THEIR REFUSAL TO USE EXPAREL, A LONG-ACTING NERVE BLOCK!!! Last Friday my wife underwent a surgery to repair a fracture in her foot. She had a similar surgery ~ 18 months ago at UNC Rex Holly Springs and received Exparel as the nerve block. When given Exparel, she was pain free post-op for somewhere from 72-96 hours and by the time it had worn off - the pain was not bad. Given this positive experience we had anticipated her receiving Exparel this time, but were told by the anesthesiologist that Exparel was not approved for foot surgeries by the FDA. I quickly fact checked this statement on the web and learned that this was NOT true - so we further petitioned it to be used. The anesthesiologist said she would discuss this with her colleagues in the anesthesia practice and came back saying that using Exparel was not part of their practice for use in the lower extremities due to the risk of nerve damage. Note - I researched this claim and did not find credible evidence of this being higher risk. In fact, I have since learned that Exparel has been commonly used with foot surgeries by other anesthesiologists in the Triangle area. My wife has been in terrible pain since very early Saturday morning, despite our proactive use of strong pain killers. This was NOT necessary so DO NOT USE UNC REX RALEIGH FOR FOOT SURGERY until they change their anesthesia practice!!! Note - the foot surgeon and nursing team were great. read more

Care is way better than 1870. They have antibiotics, anti virals, and joint replacements, cardiac stents. No draining of evil humors. They have propofol, no chloroform or ether for these anesthesiologists! They also serve people of all ethnicities and take most kinds of insurance. I had a very positive experience here about a month ago. I needed an emergency surgery. My PCP called ahead to the ED (after concerning scan findings). I arrived and was immediately called back to triage. Then returned to the waiting room for about 20 min before moving to a private room. There Kathryn (RN) set up an IV and took blood for labs. She was skilled and friendly. Then Dr. Casey assessed me before calling for Dr. Abigail Hardin (OBGYN). Both Dr. Casey and Dr. Hardin were efficient, experienced, and kind. They listened to my concerns and clearly communicated their recommendations. Rini (RN) then prepped me for the OR. I lost track of names after that. Everyone I interacted with was calm, patient, and helpful. From the ER nurses and front desk attendants to the OR nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nurse anesthetist. I was consistently updated and felt listened to. There were multiple checks along the way to ensure I understood and agreed to the procedure. Dr. Hardin updated my husband after the procedure and we spoke to her over the phone the next day. She was incredibly kind, compassionate, and practiced. My entire visit was relatively quick and smooth. I recommend this hospital to others! read more

I have been forced to interact with UNC ever since United Health Care and Wake Med failed to reach an agreement pushing Wake Med out of network. Dealing with UNC has been the worst experience ever, right from the first interaction in Chapel Hill with our daughters pediatric neurology visit. From the abysmal parking (read: non existent parking) to the excessive wait times to the after visit communications regarding a simple blood draw that they kept trying to insist I drive back to Chapel Hill for (a 40 minute drive from me) when I could easily go to Labcorp 15 minutes from me. Then in trying to schedule an EKG for our son. The Carolina Children's Cardiology staff don't ever answer the phone and return messages after 4:30pm only to be told they're a month out for appointments. Another day wasted while I look for someplace else to schedule the 15 minute EKG. I detest anything connected or related to UNC read more

August 15-16 (Friday-Saturday) I went to the ER after experiencing crushing chest pain, jaw pain, with perspiration. I was visiting from California. There were some things that could have certainly been better: communication was a big one! That being said, there are employees that truly touched my heart and here is my "angel" list! Porscha (ER waiting room) found myself, & my brother & sister-in-law a place for us to eat some food. She was already an hour past her sign out time! Dominique Koomson,PA (Cardiology), was so empathetic, caring, and explained a plan for my optimal health care safety. I needed to stay overnight & have a cardiac catherization the next morning. Next, we were in ER Holding. Ashley (ER Paramedic/RN), who was working extra for staffing, checked on us & asked if I was having any chest pain. She offered us food & drinks. Craig (ER Tech) secured my sister-in-law a recliner instead of a 2 chairs because staying overnight was our only option at 11pm! Kacie (Day RN) helped my anxiety & prepared me for my catherization. She communicated fearlessly with Shae (Charge Nurse) to resolve scheduling issues. Shae was informative, caring, and worked with Bed Control & the Cath Lab to alleviate many, if not all our concerns. Benita (8th Floor RN) saw to my safe recovery before I was discharged to my family's home. Dr Mohit Pasi and his staff made sure that I had films & copies of my test results. I even had Nitroglycerin called in for me to make my travel home safe. Needless to say, I made it home to San Diego safely. My cardiologist was pleased with my care in Raleigh. This review is for the heart part of Rex Raleigh. After a week's stay here, I am so impressed with the level of care and professionalism of all staff members on the 8th floor. Wow, what a nice clean facility that looks more like a nice hotel rather than a hospital! Big rooms, nice furniture, big baths...and many places for families to gather . The drink station was very much appreciated by both the patient and myself. I have been in many hospitals in my day. Some for work, some as a patient and some as a visitor. The heart portion of Rex is by far the nicest of the all. read more

UNC Rex is a trusted hospital in Raleigh. My cousin was recently hospitalized at the heart valve center after suffering a mild heart attack following a car accident. The staff has been phenomenal providing his care. The front desk staff and security are also excellent. This is a beautiful facility conveniently located within minutes from home for me. Plenty of parking and a gorgeous facility. I have visited the hospital previously for a gynecology appointment with the Womens Health Alliance Centre in the medical plaza. Dr. Barlow is my OBGYN and is excellent. When relocating from New York, I was very nervous about my medical care in a new state. I feel I can trust the medical professionals at UNC Rex. read more

DELIVER AT REX AT YOUR OWN RISK. I went to the hospital twice within 24 hours with clear signs of labor (bloody show, 70% effaced, 3cm dilated, contractions 5 min apart) and a history of fast delivery, but I was dismissed both times. I was given morphine, despite voicing concerns and being told it wouldn't affect my baby or interfere with tracking contractions--because I was supposedly "not in labor." I insisted otherwise, but they refused to admit me. Hours later, I delivered my baby unassisted on the floor of my bedroom while my 4-year-old watched, and EMS arrived just in time. It was terrifying. The hospital has since refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing. Emotionally and financially, it's been incredibly difficult--between the trauma itself, the EMS transport (billed twice for me and my son), ruined towels/linens/carpet and multiple hospital visits that could've been avoided (I think the hospital did it on purpose so financially they could benefit). This wasn't just a case of unmet expectations. It was a breakdown in clinical judgment and care. I was actively laboring and repeatedly denied support. The decision to medicate and discharge me, over my objections, directly impaired my ability to recognize that labor was progressing rapidly. My baby and I were placed at serious, preventable risk, and the impact on my family is something we're still processing. read more

I found myself at the ER over the weekend. When I arrived the lobby area seemed calmed. I approached the desk and was immediately checked on by the nurses at the front desk. I was escorted to the back quickly. I was blown away by how quickly the staff reacted. I am so appreciative of everyone here and the care I received. I was seen by Dr. Eve Doucette. Dr. Doucette was very thorough and knowledgeable. She provided clear feedback on my care that I could understand. Everyone was very professional, empathetic and attentive. Diane administered my Respiratory therapy treatment and promised me that I would feel better in an hour and I did. She was amazing! UNC Rex is always a Yes for me. We had a truly wonderful experience at Rex Hospital. From last minute check in to 5 days later, every person we interacted with was top notch! My husband had to have emergency surgery, which actually ended up not being "emergency" surgery due to the care team being very cautious and getting everything sorted pre-surgery. The care and treatment my husband received was truly amazing. My husband's primary care Dr even said, you need to go to ER but go to Rex, the doctors there are better. Having had a piss poor experience at Wake Med 4 years ago, she was right. Rex is a different experience completely! Shout out to RN/charge nurse Sandy who was phenomenal. The anesthesiologist was wonderful, the surgeon was fantastic and he explained everything to us both. The cafe on the first floor has great food choices, I took advantage while waiting for 2.5 hours during the surgery. Beautiful interior atrium to relax in complete with benches and koi fish, too. To whom it may concern, I called in to the UNC Rex Hospital ER (location on Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh, NC) concerning medication that was provided at my visit. I was explaining to "Douglas" (whom answered the phone), my visit, what the medication was for, and that I needed to be covered up until 2-3 days prior to a specialist visit that is upcoming, but had been moved back by a day or two. Douglas was very dismissive, did not listen to anything I had to say, and had a very rude tone. When I asked to speak to the provider or a medical professional, he huffed and puffed (blew his breath aggressively into the telephone receiver) and said "What's the name?". I find that to be discomfort that he is working in a medical emergency environment where people need assistance that lead to life threatening complications. Douglas acts very callously; which is dangerous in this environment. When Douglas finally came back to the phone, he said "I spoke to a provider/every provider no one can do anything for you.". His tone again was brisk, harmful, and dismissive. I asked to speak to a supervisor. He cut me off and said "They're going to say the same thing I am telling you.". I followed up with "I do not appreciate your tone and I would like to make a complaint." He immediately started to argue; I did not engage. Douglas then transferred me to the patient compliance department; in which, I filed a verbal complaint via the phone. I do like the care I received at this location, and majority of the staff are professional, and trustworthy. Unfortunately, Douglas was not so much. I recommend UNC Rex Hospital ER, just not him. Review for UNC Rex Emergency Department I recently attended the UNC Rex Emergency Department on Lake Boone Trail with my wife, for the frequent sharp pains and bleeding she was experiencing. We went there to get checked out and get answers of what is going on and how to stop these emergency symptoms. And, if we were to be sent back home, we needed instructions on what to look for if things get worse and at what point to come back if things don't get better. The intake process took about 1 hour. She started in the lobby, waited, was shuffled into a triage room, shuffled back to the lobby. Waited 1 hour. Then, she was taken back for vitals and a blood draw. From there, she was shuffled back to the lobby to wait another hour. The shuffling of her and the patients in the ER appeared to be designed to make patients not realize the length of wait, while knocking out as many tasks as possible for the sake of the throughput of the emergency department. After being taken back for the main testing, and being brought back to the lobby, we waited another hour, before being called once more. We we shuffled to the "RW" hallway. There was the main hallway between the emergency department lobby and the main emergency department floor. Please note, this was a main hallway. There was no privacy in this hallway, only a canvas partition. While we waited, we clearly heard the details between the hospital staff and the patient next to us despite the facade of privacy barriers in use. The patient expressed to the medical staff that they wanted to go home because they had been waiting for so long. The medical staff replied that since the patient was in need of monitoring for concern over silent aspirations, they advised against them leaving. Through this conversation, we heard that they were in the emergency department because there were no rooms available for in patient care. The medical staff told them that if they were willing to wait that they would try to find them a room in the back in which to wait. I mention this to note that this is where your medical information is discussed, seated next to others in a hallway. A busy hallway where various others are walking back and forth. In this hallway, we were told by a Physician Assistant that we were brought to that spot to receive discharge instructions. Standing, the PA leaned over my seated wife and started to tell a very brief summary of the results from the testing. My wife, realizing that the PA was about to openly discuss her sensitive and private information publicly, requested to be taken to a private room to hear the results. The PA appeared offput by this and told my wife it would take longer to find a room. After waiting, a nurse came to take us to a private area. There, we waited again. An EMT ED tech came to check vitals. My wife asked to speak with the nurse. The tech left to get the nurse. Later, the tech came back with discharge papers and said, "you are good to go". At this point, we had still not received any explanation of the results. My wife asked to see the ER doctor who wrote the discharge document. My wife and I stated we would like to know more about the results and what to watch for at home. The ED tech pulled a computer in and opened the results tab to show us and did her best to read the screen to us. Prior to that the PA told us to go on UNC MyChart for the results. Leaving with this discharge paper work, we see written at the top, "You were seen by David Messerly". At no point during this visit did we see this doctor or any doctor. Only the PA. Main concerns: - The discharge summary was not given without asking for it multiple times. The main reason for our visit, to learn what was wrong, what the status was, what the results of the labs and imaging was, and what to watch for after leaving was not answered without us having to continually ask for them. We were not asked if we had questions and the first two times they tried to discharge us without explanation of the results. - Privacy was not provided as they attempted to do discharge in a hallway. We and other patients could clearly hear and see each other while discharge was taking place. Positive - the tech who did the blood draw was the one with the best bedside manners. He was called from the main emergency department lobby because he had the best experience with blood draws. - In the final conversation, the ED tech came around and showed sympathy in her words and did her best to explain things to us. This is not the way to treat or care for a person bleeding and experiencing sharp pains. We got on MyChart later to try to make sense of the results. I am not asking for an apology. I am asking that you do better to treat the patients who come through your doors. With a bit of grace for the staff working at this Emergency Department, I should ask, "Is this indicative of labor shortages due to overpaid management?". We have had far better treatment and care at WakeMed and Duke. read more

I've had two surgeries at Rex (most recently on 13 April) and received a superb standard of care both times, from check-in to discharge. The nursing teams are attentive to patient needs, highly skilled, cheerful and did so much to make my surgery a stress-free event. My operation was for herniated spinal disks and I was in excruciating pain. The staff saw that I had pain relief when needed and was as comfortable as possible. I went in nervous and scared; I left very comfortable. The nurses in pre-op and both stages of recovery care are outstanding. I have never been treated so well by medical personnel. I can't say enough good things about them. They went beyond professional; they're just downright nice to the patients as well. Rex is a top-of-the-line hospital and teaching facility where you are guaranteed to receive state-of-the-art care. The facility is very well-organized, and not just for patients. The waiting area for family and friends had a screen that keeps them informed of where their patient is at every stage. Each patient is given a number to protect their privacy, and waiting family can check it to see where you are at any time. Staff came out with updates for my husband as well. I have always been very happy with the care I've received here and highly recommend this hospital. Have your surgery at Rex if you have a choice. I've had a surgery and other procedures (ER visits) at WakeMed, and received very good care, but prefer Rex because of its highly-personalized and family-centered standard of care. At WakeMed I was just another patient; Rex made me feel that I wasn't just another body on an assembly line. I'm really angry right now at the terrible communication from them regarding my upcoming surgery. I received an email that stated clearly to report to 4420 Lake Boone Trail--Rex Hospital. No other directions. I consulted MyUNC chart and it said the same thing. There was not anything about the appointment being a call instead of being in person. I went to my doctors office to ask what is going on. They had to make some calls to figure out what is going on. They told me I would get a call. News to me! I found that I did get a call and it was an unknown number so went to my voicemail. I returned the call and went thru the health screening to prepare for upcoming surgery. It was fine except they had no medical history on me. Really? I would think with technology there would be a shared record system. Overall totally dissatisfied with how poor the communication is. I'm an organized, high functioning adult. I can't imagine the nightmare this would be for elderly, caregivers, those with mental illness or cognitive issues. Saga continues. I needed to reschedule my required Covid test, they said my doctors office scheduled these. Nope--not true. Thankful that Dr. Kim's staff knew who to call. When she contacted me she acted like she's have to reschedule my whole surgery. I said wouldn't it be easier to find an available Covid testing time that doesn't conflict with my work schedule? Being persistent pays. I hope I am all set. read more

Rex use to be my favorite hospitals. That has changed since COVID. The system they have in place in the Emergency room is unacceptable.. to say the least. My mom and dad were in a car accident brought in by ambulance although their injuries were not life threatening. They are in their late 80's and they were actually wheeled in the ER where they were surrounded by sick people with IV's stuck in them. it took forever to have their test run and so on and so on. There has got to be a better/ safer protocol in place. This is unacceptable and now I can understand why I hear so many complaints about this hospital. I will definitely go to Wake Med from now on and make sure my family and friends will do the same. This makes me so sad but I certainly don't want anyone else to go through what we endured.. hopefully me and my loved ones will not get sick in the process. read more

had my son back in May 2023 via schedule d c-section due to breach presentation. I thankfully have health insurance that paid for a lot of it however, my bill still came to almost $7000 plus my already out of pocket expenses, deductible, co-pays, etc. My husband and I have been trying to work with the hospital to set up a payment plan to pay the hospital after we hired a company called Goodbill to lower our bill to approximately $5000. Goodbill had informed me that the hospital would be happy to set up a payment plan with me but that I had to call them. I have been trying to get a payment plan set up since August 2023 and still have had no success. I have had MULTIPLE (too many to even count) people in the billing department tell me they would forward my new amount to this AccessOne company to set up a payment plan. (See attached image of them saying they approved the amount and have sent it to a company called Access One... side note... they have not). I've now been told TWICE that I have to pay the amount in full once the amount is approved within 30 days... LIKE WHAT!?!? Im sitting here willing to pay my bill and the hospital refuses to work with me or my family. Idk if they've seen the shape the economy is in currently, and idk about you but I do not just have $5000 laying around to throw at a bill. With that said, if you are looking for a hospital that understands this, cares about their patients, and treats their patients with kindness as well as respect... this hospital is NOT for you! Don't even get me started on how rude some of the nurses were during my time in the maternity ward after my son was born. I could also go on and on about how they screwed me over to attempt to breastfeed and gave me wrongful information...Very sad because I love my OBGYN, but I will not be having my next one a REX for the way they treat me as well as other patients. I had a day procedure in the hospital itself. I found the whole experience very impersonal and like a rushed assembly line. The nurses and others moved in and out so fast I was even left with blood dripping down my arm after a blood draw. Not a great experience with the anesthesia and still waiting for that report and no one followed up. The minute I opened my eyes almost I was rushed to get dressed and get out. A few of the nurses took the time to say a few words. I ran a high fever afterwards but I will say someone did answer the phone there and help get me to a person to talk to about it after the UNC Rex Digestive Raleigh doctor's office would never answer my call or return it. It is sad to see the state of today's healthcare system. read more

This really doesn't have anything to do with the provider herself or her service. This has to do with the billing practices of UNC. I went in for my annual checkup. The provider asked me about my sleep. I also asked if I could get my hormones checked. No discussion about hormones was done. She wrote me a RX for sleep medication and she placed an order for TWO additional lab tests. Got a bill and they charged me for 2 office visits because sleep was brought up-she asked and because she ordered 2 TWO additional lab tests. Basically a 600.00 charge for less than a 30 min visit. Take note that my appointment did not go over my allotted time. Going back and forth with the snotty billing department has gotten me no where. It was my annual exam and my health concerns should be discussed. It's not like I went in there for my physical and said I stumped my toe and need X-rays. This is what is wrong with our healthcare system and why our premiums are so high and why people can't afford to go see a doctor. Their billing department customer service is horrible and disrespectful. read more

UNC Rex Raleigh Floor 7 - no concern for patient safety! Recently admitted to UNC Rex for surgery. When it was time for discharge, I was asked if I wanted a wheelchair or could I walk because "a wheelchair will take a long time". I said I would walk. However, I did not realize that meant....good...see ya. I was discharged and told I could leave after I was dressed. I got dressed expecting someone to help me carry my bag and escort me. I walked out of my room and at least four nurses were socializing at their station and none of them even acknowledged me until I asked where to go. No escort, no one to help me carry my bag, no one cared if I was getting safely to the exit or a vehicle. I was just pointed to the elevator and told to go to the ground floor and out the main exit. I still had a hospital band on my wrist and not one person from the 7th floor to the main entrance seemed to have any concern for my well being or safety. Are there not rules and regulations for patient safety at UNC Rex? OHSA maybe? My RN friend (from Duke) was waiting to pick me up at the entrance and was dumbfounded that I was not even walking a straight line coming out the entrance and had no escort. She had to leave her car to get me and I'm very thankful she was there! To the UNC Rex Floor 7 nurses..... lucky for me that my friend picking me up is an RN and was there to get me from the entrance to the car because I was barely walking by the time I got there. I realize it's "not your job" to ensure patient safety once I sign the discharge papers but it is human decency at the least! It's not like any of you were busy so you could have had one of the other 3-4 not busy nurses watch your patient(s) on the floor for 5 min to care that one of your discharged patients make it out with falling in the elevator or trip heading down the hall. Sometimes you just need to make something "your job"! read more

The positives - the nurses at Rex were all very good. In the ED and in the Heart and Vascular wing. The food looked very good. The so-so's - the doctor assigned to my wife was just okay. Not very communicative and wanted to jump to doing surgery versus trying medications. The bad - there is no efficient way to communicate with the patient's care team. You can easily find the members making up her care team, but there are no phone numbers to call them or ways to text or email them. In addition, the case manager who was assigned to my wife did not respond to several texts, once I was able to get her number from the floor nurse. She was also unfriendly and really not all that empathetic - a characteristic one would expect a person in this role to be. read more

Based on the care provided to me the 7 West Surgical Floor Nursing Staff violated 10A NCAC 13B .3302 MINIMUM PROVISIONS OF PATIENT'S BILL OF RIGHTS They do not adhere to their patients promise, they have a very detailed 1-10 pain scale given during pre operative appointment. After major surgery I was ignored when i kept telling them I was a 10+ level and told I had gas pressure and pain medication would not help. For more than much m48 hours I was given Tylenol crushed down an NG tube and a pillow the squeeze across my abdomen . The last day I was also visited by a huge bug not sure what it was. I could say so much more but am sure would be visited by there're legal team. read more

Here for mom's hip surgery. Seems to be well organized, and keep you informed every step of the way. Decent cafe for lunch, but did expect more healthy choices. Staff is very mice and place is very clean. Rooms are much nicer than expected. Would recommend to anyone for medical needs. read more

While spending 6 days in ICU is not an experience anyone wants, the staff was outstanding and care excellent.

If you want to the best care, go to Rex. Period. Wonderful doctors and nurses. You was very sick and with their guidance, instruction and kindnesses, I'm on a strong road to recovery. read more

Shame on Rex. 2 cancelled procedures. They didn't inform me their machine broke the first time. Then they gave me bad prep instructions that I followed. My doctor called and was assured the procedure would continue. Then they cancelled me the morning of the procedure after all my prep. Terrible communication. Terrible procedure controls. No humanity. I brought my dad here for cataract surgery and we had an excellent experience from start to finish. We signed in and shortly afterwards my dad was registered. The kind lady at the registration desk then walked us to a waiting room where my dad was shortly afterwards greeted by staff and taken into the prep area. They called me in about 30 minutes later to talk with my dad before the procedure. About 45 minutes later, I received a call and walked back to the waiting area. The staff at the waiting area walked me to Dad's room where a nurse was with him. Soon afterwards I picked him up from the patient tower very close to free parking. We arrived at 9:15 am, surgery was scheduled at 11:15 am and at 12 pm, I was walking out of the hospital after my dad was discharged. Everything was organized, the nurses were friendly and knowledgeable, and the admin staff were very friendly. The hospital was very clean and quiet with a small gift shop and a wonderful cafe with a variety of food including freshly made sushi, big slices of fresh pizza, salads and subs. The signage in and outside of the hospital was very clear and made our visit very positive. Dad received a follow up call from them the next day. Great service all around! read more

If you have elderly family members that have ongoing health problems or get sick, don't expect nurses and doctors to treat them with dignity or respect. Don't expect communication with medical team and family members, or phone calls to doctors to be returned. I went four days without hearing from a doctor on my mother's life-threatening diagnosis and treatment plan after calling the nurse's station 2 times a day. So unacceptable. My mother is 87 y/o and has been in that horrible hospital 3 times in the last year. This last time, she was very sick with a horrible and violent stomach and intestinal flu bug. Dehydrated from 3 days of this bug, I called 911 (I live out of state). She was in tears by the time she was discharged. She was made to feel as she was an imposition on staff, that her health issues and illnesses were not important to them, it was the 'you're old, useless and you're not going to get better' attitudes. She was even chastised for something she had no control over. I give them one star because their medical expertise is excellent ( but that should be standard for all hospitals), but a big fat F in compassionate care, family communication, doctor-patient communication, updates and doctor interaction. read more
