If you're looking for an old-fashioned, drive-up ice cream shop, this is the place to go. Dreamette has been here "forever", and honestly, it looks like it too. But that's half the charm of the place. They have your basic ice cream and shakes, as well as sundaes (served in a cup), and they always have a selection of interesting dips you can top your cones with. I've only ever had a dipped cone so I can't speak to their other offerings, although when sitting in their nearby seats you see people ordering milkshakes and sundaes as frequently as you see cones go by so they must be good as well. Outside seating for a few. Lines can get pretty long, especially on a hot day. On a warm day there is almost always a line of at least 10 people deep and if that doesn't say it all, you can often find a line of people waiting even on cold days! Absolutely a great ice cream shop! Even that is an understatement. Me and my family have been coming here for years and my parents brought me here as a child. Yes,the line can be very long at times (obviously because it's worth the wait) and they only accept cash(no debit/credit), but that does not take away any stars in my opinion. Amazing little place. Explains why they have the great reviews. We were greeted by the owner who shared that he had just retired from law enforcement. There are SOOOOO many choices! We ordered a strawberry shake which was sooo heavenly!! It was soo fresh and strawberry delightful. I LOVE BANANA, so I thought this would be perfect. Unfortunately, the bananas were not fresh. Is The Dreamette a dream? Can something so delicious be real? Alas, it is real and has been real since 1948. I was just here recently, enjoying a Chocolate Dipped Vanilla Ice Cream Cone while my husband enjoyed a LARGE Oreo Milkshake [it was very large, beware of the large] when we started to discuss how places like The Dreamette just don't seem to open up anymore. What can I say except that The Dreamette is a Jacksonville institution which has been around since 1948 (albeit w/a few owners over the years - who, thankfully, knew that if it ain't broke, don't fix it & to leave well enough alone when it comes to the soft-serve recipe that has stood the test of time - it is now the stuff of legends for old-timers & their progeny). A little slice of ice cream parlor heaven from days gone by, The Dreamette is still serving up quality goods at reasonable prices w/a smile & good old-fashioned folksy charm/southern hospitality, like you probably haven't seen since Mayberry. Their famous vanilla soft-serve isn't of the ultra-smooth air-whipped "royal" variety (tho, DQ does have its place) - but more like the hand-cranked [or even electric motor driven] variety of homemade ice cream from yesteryear. Just thick enough w/the right amount of ice crystallization to give it that authentic homemade texture. Pair it w/any of their old-fashioned sauces, mix-ins or toppings and you'll have your very own dairy dessert masterpiece. Of course, there are shakes, malts, sundaes, cones, dipped cones (way more choices here than "her majesty" ever thought to offer), floats, freezes, slushies, etc, etc - the list could go on and on (and often does!). My favorite is the butterscotch sundae, complete w/whipped cream & a cherry on top. It's made w/REAL BUTTERSCOTCH - the kind that's cooked in a kettle til it reaches the right level of caramelization, so that it hardens just a little once it hits the ice cold soft serve (that it simultaneously melts a little, since it's dipped up warm from the stockpot) - NOT the store-bought variety that maintains the same slippery viscosity whether stored @ room temperature or in your fridge after opening, that tastes more sweet and less salty/buttery than REAL BUTTERSCOTCH ever should. On a recent trip it seems the current purveyors have added significantly to the menu offerings (as if there weren't enough concoctions, flavors, dips, combinations, and cones already). This place is located in Murray Hill. So when someone says they live in Murray Hill, I quickly ask, how far away are you from Dreamette? I'll be totally honest the ice cream isn't gourmet or anything and the price will prove so. However, this place is amazing because it's been around forever and during the summer this place is the place to go to cool down. There's one little bench out front so you usually have to stand to eat your ice cream. You have to eat it fast too or else it'll melt like crazy. BE WARNED THEY ONLY TAKE CASH! Coming from NYC where Mr.Softee is a neighborhood friend, I was skeptical of the fact that this place would be amazing. For the ice cream only, sure it is. They have all your basics along with cotton candy,cake batter,etc I was extremely pleased with the selection they had. They also have cones in different flavors. I was able to try the cinnamon waffle cone and it didn't disappoint. They also give you too much ice cream. The prices are low and it is a pretty sweet deal:) Customer service the worst. It really altered my experience. I arrived and rather than the cashier calling next she just awkwardly stared at you. Then i went up to order and was telling me no we can't do that but didn't offer me a solution to what we can do. Then when it was time to pay she said "why are you pulling out ypur card". Granted it is clear that they did not take cards, but i was focused on my order and felt that she could have rephrased that. I left and came back and she continued to be awkwardly rude.
