I needed to get a tube replaced in a bike tire that popped and also have some cleats removed and pedals put on another bike. Dr. J's is conveniently located in Buellton and was open on a holiday! They have parking right out front, which was nice for unloading bikes and easily going inside the shop. The staff working this day was super helpful and immediately started helping us upon arrival. He was really quick to work on both bikes and we were in and out in less than half an hour. I definitely recommend this spot. This is a great local bike shop. If you need to rent a bike to ride in the Santa Ynez valley...this is your place. They have nice rental bikes and every kind of gear you may possibly need. My in-laws live in Santa Ynez so I came up here to ride quite a bit. My favorite story is the time Performance Bikes in Los Angeles gave me the wrong speedplay pedals (since they all look very similar) and I had drive 2 hours from LA to ride the Fig fondo. I arrived at the start line and realized I couldn't ride because my bike shop installed the wrong pedals even though I showed them the pedals I wanted and gave them my shoes to look at. Thankfully Dr. J's sorted it out and got me the right pedals. I've chatted with Corey a few times and he is super nice and knowledgeable as well. They are super friendly and knowledgeable here and I can't recommend them enough. read more

We got there kind of late (1:30 pm) but Lucio got us on out electric bikes very quickly and showed us a beautiful loop out of Solvang (via Alamo Pintado Rd) to Los Olivos and back (via Ballard Canyon Rd). My husband and I stopped in here to rent bikes while we were in Solvang for the weekend. The young guy who rented the bikes to us was extremely friendly and helpful. There was a big group that had stepped in right before we had and it took a good while for it to finally be our turn to rent the bikes just for the hour we wanted. Because it took a good bit of time, he gave us more time than we paid for with the bikes. He also gave us a map with recommendations for which routes and how long they'd be, as well as, a cute place to stop and have lunch. The one star taken off was only because of the front brake on my husbands bike. It would get stuck anytime he tried to use it, and his bike would squeak while riding because of it. Had a fantastic experience here. Eight of us signed up for an electric bike tour. We loved it. The orientation was detailed and we were personally sized and educated to each bike. Our guides Roger and Neil were fantastic, extremely kind and patient. We really enjoyed our stop for lunch at Beckmen Winery. The entire day was really fun and enjoyable. Only minor drawback was the wine tasting just took too long as the service there was extremely slow. No fault of our guides at all. Thank you for a wonderful cycling tour. read more

My husband and I were on a bicycle tour staying in Solvang for a couple of days and we stopped in at Dr J's bike shop for some advice on the best way to bike from Solvang to Santa Barbara, our next destination. They were very helpful and friendly and we ended up with a great route. Also, I was really pleased to see that their shop jerseys came in women's sizes as well as men's, which is not often the case, so we bought Dr J's jerseys for ourselves. They are made in Italy with European sizing so we each needed one size up. Great shop! read more

I live in Santa Barbara, and will gladly drive to Solvang whenever my bike needs help because this shop is sooo much better than the shops in SB! I have an old Univega roadie thats been beat to hell, and they help me keep it in top shape. Money is tight, and they work with me to keep things affordable. Sometimes they even sell me parts at cost to help me out! These guys do great work and seem very honest and down to earth! Out in the hills of Solvang, I'm an out-of-towner, from San Jose, and I'm really loving my ride. Wouldn't you know it, my rear shifter cable snaps and I'm stuck on an 11 tooth cog.. in the hills. Luckily with cell phone service, looked for the nearest bike shop, and headed that way (only in Solvang will this involve passing a miniature horse farm, so goddamn cute, you almost puke) I'm hammering, building huge quads, on my 11 toother. It's hot too. Find the shop, I'm in a panic, because I'm trying to get the children to Disney before noon and due to this problem, I'm late late late. I pull in there, dripping sweat, ask them for *immediate* help, explaining my current problem. They got right to work. They put my bike almost back to new; the shifting was the best. The wrench spotted that my frame hanger was slightly bent, so he fixed it. And then he insisted on me waiting another minute so he could perfectly reapply the bar tape - I really really appreciated the attention to detail. They also insisted on saving me 20 bucks and reusing my old bar tape. I can't even remember what they charged me, it was too low, so I tipped the guy 10 bucks which he adamantly refused, but I kept on insisting. If you read my reviews, I now have 3 awesome bike shops to use in norcal, central cal, and socal. It took a lot of wasted money and trial and error to find my shops, but they're getting all of my business when I'm around. read more

I've been going to Dr. J's for a few years now, and have always liked the service, the selection, and some of the exclusive solvang/santa ynez-related items that you can pick up. As a local, this stuff is pretty cool to me. I've now brought my 2014 Orbea Orca in twice for rear derailleur issues (both of which were somewhat my fault). Now, as far as user error goes, it can be embarrassing to walk in with your tail between your legs whilst having to explain to mechanic where you went wrong and that you'd like them to clean up the (seemingly) gigantic mechanical mess you've managed to create. The two occasions I've had to do this, I was never met with any hint of a "holier than thou" attitude that I've experienced at other shops and that some *ahem* other reviewers have complained about. I'm usually met with a chuckle or a light-hearted "that doesn't look good!" Maybe some people are ultra sensitive. I dunno. The mechanics are great (thanks Sam and Adriana!), and they've resurrected the same Shimano 105 rear derailleur twice now (might be time for a replacement) and the pricing is very fair, especially for repairs. They had to order an Orbea-specific hanger for me, but it wasn't a problem at all. Even when they received the wrong part from Orbea and had to delay my repair, Cory called to let me know that he had a whole fleet of rental bikes at the ready in case I was going to miss a ride. I didn't end up taking it, but that kind of service certainly doesn't go unnoticed. Great shop guys. Keep up the good work. read more

I REFUSE to EVER step foot in this establishment again. I went against what some local friends told me about this shop and went in anyway. I used to go here often when Adriana and Sam worked here because they are the best bike mechanics in the Santa Ynez Valley and pleasant to talk to. They are no longer there and now I know that. The owner Corey Evans is a terrible and inattentive dunce. He is only in the business to get your money. He sold me a bike that was a whole size too small for me just because he wanted to get the sale. This was two months ago and I have since gone down to Bicycle Bob's where they brought this to my attention. I took my bike in for its year of 'free maintenance' David who is a mechanic there has no idea what he is doing and is just as bad as the owner. He had a piss poor attitude and was more interested in talking to his female coworker and some roadie at the back door. This shop has exponentially gotten worse. Put your money in a business that has you in their best interest. read more

We took the 'Electric-Assist Bike Tour' and enjoyed every minute! I would recommend this tour as a wonderful introduction to the Santa Ynez Valley. We passed through Ballard, then enjoyed olive oil and balsamic tasting in Los Olivos, finishing with lunch and wine tasting at Rideau Vineyard. Scott was our guide, providing for our every need along with lots of information about the local area. We thoroughly enjoyed his company, and enjoyed meeting his wife at lunch. Our ride was the last weekend of June and we were lucky to have weather that was in the low to mid 80's. If you are not a regular bicyclist, do not let the distance scare you. This ride was mostly flat, and we had Specialized pedal assist bikes that made me feel like a kid again. These bikes are well maintained, safe, and very easy to use. You can work as hard or as little as you want. I will definitely send friends to Dr. J's and look forward to a return trip! read more

So professional, so pleasant to deal with...a great bike shop. I had a relatively new bike(to me) and had a flat (with no tube). I hitched a ride to Solvang and they took me in right away and got me back on the road in 30 minutes (with a new tire and a couple tubes). Such a great experience. A bit of praise for Dr. J's! The road bike I bought from them six years ago got stolen, so I went to see about a replacement. I didn't know they swapped out their rental (high end) bikes so often, but they have a few and one was a perfect fit for me so I'm on the road again. But, the praise part is that I needed to make a police report and they needed the serial number and I didn't have it. They checked their computer and it wasn't available. So, the owner, Corey, contacted Specialized and got the number for me. I consider that amazing service. read more
