When Dr Gupta came into the room an hour later, he said your Mom has a torn rotator cuff so when do you want to do surgery? When I said we can't do surgery on a patient with severe dementia, the anesthesia would escalate her mental decline. He said then, you don't want surgery, ok I'm done and proceeded to leave. Now I had already waited 1 hour in the patient room and I didn't wait that long to have a 30 sec conversation. I said wait a minute. You aren't hearing me. What are my mother's options ? How did her rotator cuff tear. He then took 45 seconds to show me her x-rays showing arthritis and bone spurs and her age contributed to the tear and said all I can do is refer you to physical therapy if you don't want surgery. Ok fine. We are opting for PT. I just found his abruptness off putting and I don't think he bothered with looking at the patient's mental condition before he just proclaimed she needs surgery. If he had taken the time to review her file, he would have seen surgery on a severely mentally compromised patient where anesthesia would impact her cognition further was not a good option. Essentially his bedside manners are terrible. He's abrupt and I felt since he couldn't make money off my mother, he wasn't wasting his time. A more humane concerned approach would have been better received.

Dr. Bhatia's staff was very nice and helpful. I emailed them via his website at www.irvinespine.com and they got me in for an appointment ASAP. I really liked that Dr. Bhatia didn't try to convince me to have surgery immediately (like a couple of other surgeons had done). Instead, we tried physical therapy and light medications to help the pain. Unfortunately, they didn't work, so I ended up having surgery. It went great. I woke up and my pain was gone. Recovery was pretty easy, and I haven't felt better for as long as I can remember. Not only was Dr. Bhatia an outstanding surgeon, but his bedside manner and compassion made me and family fell at ease in a very stressful time. We couldn't be happier with the care.

During the pre-op in clinic process, I met Dr. Sabin Shah, a resident. What a gem he was to turn out to be! Because I have a mechanical heart valve, out- patient surgeries become 5-8 day hospital stays for me since they have to deal with anti-coagulant issues resulting from my need to take Coumadin (a blood thinner) and manage a window of time safe to protect my valve and also safe to perform surgery. So I basically become a perfectly healthy individual in the hospital walking around attached to an IV infusing me with Heparin (faster acting anticoagulant that is administered via IV) waiting for my blood levels to become therapeutic. I've had this mechanical valve for 12 years and have had, unfortunately at least four surgeries since then. I self test my blood at home and under my cardiologists guidance, I self dose according to my cardio's guidelines. As a result of this, I have a history and knowledge of how much the doses need to be to attain therapeutic levels. Suffice it to say, after surgery there was a huge disconnect between what the in- hospital pharmacy recommended and what my experience had been with prior "loading doses" of Coumadin. Enter Dr. Shah. Dr. Shah saw me every single day of my five day hospital stay, sometimes twice daily when required. When I brought the dosing issue to his attention-he was ON IT! He consulted professionally with the hospital departments needed and I received the proper "loading doses" required to safely and quickly get my blood levels to a therapeutic level. There ended up being a few other "hiccups" with regards to medication and the pharmacy, which Dr. Shah very quickly resolved. He was always available and offering reassurance. One day, late in the evening during a walk around the hospital floor, my husband and I saw Dr. Shah waiting for the elevator (hopefully on his way home) and I had a few concerns which I addressed with him. He easily could have pushed them off by following up the next day or leaving and later calling in. However, he walked back to the nursing station with us and he went to work dealing with the "situation." What a fine, fine physician UCI is fortunate to have on board! A professional, personable individual that you can tell truly cares about his patients. There is nothing mechanical or short-spoken about him. With a tremendous bedside manner, this physician will go far and I've no doubt if he were to eventually start his own practice - patients would be willing to travel far and wide to consult with him. UCI Medical Center, when Dr. Shah is done with his residency here, you'd be very wise to offer him a fellowship! He is one of the finest physicians I've met! My sincere thanks to you Dr. Shah.

Unfortunately, what they lack ends up a longer list. The first MA was unable to get a vial of blood and said someone else would try on my other arm with a straight needed (vs butterfly). She left me without even putting a bandaid on the arm she poked and I had to struggle to put the bandaid on one handed while still maintaining pressure on it. Next MA comes and draws blood and when she's done she yelps I don't have a cotton ball (to put on the vein she just drew out of) and my blood is just pooling while she puts a bandaid on. Luckily I'm well versed enough to know I needed to put pressure on my bandaid. The NP who saw me was new to (per the MA) she really didn't put my mind at ease. Her expertise and knowledge seemed lacking based on the answers to my questions. First thing she asked me was, why are you here and not the ER? I told her my PCP sent me here because she didn't feel it necessitated a ER visit. She wanted me to be evaluated by YOU to assess and in your medical opinion, do I need to be seen further or what course of action next? She swabbed me for flu and covid and I verbally questioned her because I had isolated severe GI symptoms. She said sometimes those present wither GI only. Does it? I don't know, I'm not an MD but I'm also someone who works in healthcare and it didn't feel like the proper procedure. When I asked if she would be ordering any stool samples, I heard through my closed door "do we do that?". Ok, she's new, I'll give her that...but she comes back in and says "if you'd like to have the order for stool testing I'm happy to give that to you." Am I the md or am I the patient? I came here for your professional medical opinion! Do I?! So after I kindly communicated that I am looking to her for her opinion as the expert whether or not my symptoms necessitate an order, she still doesn't quite give me a direct answer! I haven't been to that many urgent cares, but I've come to see a trend that many of the urgent cares that are owned by a company with multiple locations don't have MD's on staff physically there. That said, I've also noticed the trend that many provide sub-par care.

I came in specifically because I was feeling unwell and suspected a blood sugar issue--especially since lab work from a different clinic the prior week showed a fasting glucose level high enough to indicate diabetes. Despite explaining this, the Physician Assistant (PA) dismissed my concerns, told me I "didn't fit the profile" for diabetes, and ordered a thyroid panel instead. Three days later, the support staff called to tell me they lost my blood sample and needed me to come back in. When I expressed frustration that they lost my sample for a test I didn't even ask for--while still refusing to run the metabolic panel I actually needed--the staff member literally hung up on me. I only returned the next day because it is within walking distance of my house and I was having the same feeling again, wanting to get to the bottom of what was happening. While the PA on duty that day was attentive, she ended up sending me to the ER for my blood pressure. After waiting four hours at the hospital, the ER doctor confirmed it wasn't an emergency at all. To top it all off, I received another call from the urgent care informing me that they did eventually run a metabolic panel, and my A1C and fasting glucose levels are, in fact, indicative of diabetes. Between the PA completely dismissing a patient's concerns, the staff losing blood samples, and being hung up on, the lack of professionalism and competence here is alarming. Go somewhere else.

I was referred to Dr. Smith after experiencing a neck injury. I was in significant pain at the time of our consultation, Dr. Smith determined that i likely had herniated disks in my neck and prescribed some medications to help with pain and knock down some inflammation. He ordered an MRI which confirmed his original diagnosis and revealed multiple and substantial herniations. The injuries were severe enough to potentially require surgery to relieve the symptoms but Dr. Smith recommended we start with an epidural injection and to begin physical therapy before making any decisions about surgery. After two injections and numerous physical therapy visits I am well on my way to recovery without needing surgery. Dr. Smith's experience and talent helped me recover without surgery when others were advising that surgery was the only possible outcome. I have received honest and direct medical advice and help to try and avoid surgery and get back to a better life and activities. If I could give a zero star I would. First of all he was behind on his appointments. I understand…read morethat happens. I've worked in doctors offices. But I had to go ask as nobody communicates that to you. mind you this is a big office with multiple providers. So multiple staff members work there. Not one person made us feel welcome. More like we were trash. We were there through a lawyer maybe that's why but guess what they still get paid. So an hour later, the nurse not the doctor the nurse orders x-rays, hmmm... which were unnecessary because an MRI was already done. When the doctor came in, he did not even go over the x-rays they just did. He was so nonchalant about the issues at hand. Was ready to leave the room after two minutes. The only reason it lasted maybe five is because I kept asking questions. But every time he said, do you have more questions? He was already halfway to the door. We are getting a second opinion because the issues are serious and he right away just said oh surgery remove a disc. Wait what and it was as if he wanted an answer right then and there. Sorry no that's a drastic decision to make on the spot! I think this office is too big and you're not treated like a patient. I would be very weary of going here.

Suffered from compressed discs and shooting nerve pain down legs. After trying physical therapy and…read moreone year of back injections, the end result was to have disc replacement and fusion surgery by Dr. Alexander. The surgery went extremely well and my nerve pain vanished The day of the surgery. I'm six weeks postop I'm feeling great, just building up strength again. I would highly recommend Dr. Alexander if you experience similar problems.
