I hired him to do my staircase railings and he did a great job. He worked with my contractor and custom made the railings and handrails. Fast forward ten years and I am building an outdoor paradise and I hired Barry to build a custom iron gate and custom scroll work for the kitchen area. This time, it was harder to get the sales person out. I had to call several times to schedule but once Carlos came out it was a good experience. I could tell they had grown and were substantially much busier. When the gate was installed the antique style (like Faux) paint job was beautiful. At that time, they needed to better install and stabilize the gate with the frame so they came out and fixed it. In the process the paint job got scratched and the frame paint didn't match the gate. When I spoke to Austin, Barry's son, they sent out the sales person, Carlos, to touch up the paint. He used a rag and some paint from the shop. He did the best that a sales person could do but it didn't match and it was blotchy. I took pictures and Barry came out to look at it personally and realized that it wasn't the quality fix he had anticipated. He wanted to have his shop painter out and we would figure out how we would both pay for it. Harvey hits and I lose my house. I call Austin about a month later and said let's finish this after we move back in. Fast forward a year and we move back into the house. I call Austin and I'm told that they are too busy and they won't be able to do the paint job. I contacted Barry and he refused to contact me back. He tells my contractor that is he done with this project and this not a priority. I'm disappointed with the lack of service and the non responsive attitude. There is no desire to make it right. No desire to offer other options other than find someone else. The product is great but the follow up is poor, the customer service is poor and the attitude is poor. For a family run business I'm surprised that this approach is an acceptable way of doing business. By the way, I redid my house using another Metal Frabricator and spent 30,000 with a competitor because I was afraid of the customer experience I would have with Barry. If they could't fix a gate paint job, how would they be with a much larger project? I hope this helps.

This is a heads-up to anyone considering hiring a local handyman, Ralph Valenciano. He has…read moreadvertised under the name "Handy in the Heights". I would strongly advise against hiring this individual. I hired him last August to install five windows in a garage apartment. I was told the windows needed to be ordered. He asked me to buy the windows and he would install them. I was preparing to leave town for a week so I gave him a check to order/buy the windows. I received a call from him the day I returned informing me that the manufacturer was behind schedule but should have the windows within a week. He called a few days later to let me know the windows had arrived and that he would schedule installation when his current project was completed. Three weeks passed and I had not heard from him, however, I was not too concerned because it had been raining. After another week (now Oct. 16th) I texted him. I wanted to know when the windows would be installed. He explained that part of the scaffolding was damaged and had to be replaced but he would be able to install the windows the following week. He did not show up the following week or the week after that. I texted him on Nov. 4th suggesting that he deliver the windows to me and I would get someone else to install them. He apologized and said he would install them Nov. 10-11. He texted me on the morning of the 11th to let me know the scaffolding would be set up that afternoon. No show. This back and forth continued for another five weeks during which I asked him to deliver the windows or return my money. No response. My final text to him was on Dec. 24th. I reminded him that there were courses of action I could take and I would be doing so. In conclusion, if you choose to hire this individual I suggest you not pay him a cent in advance for material or labor. Wait until the project is completed. LPC
