A beautiful YMCA and by far the cheapest and best option in downtown Denver. Though they don't have a pool, they make up for it with a sauna and a steam room in the women's locker room. Everything is kept very clean, and the locker room is esp. large with a TV and everything else you could imagine. Spin classes are high quality as well as the Yoga classes (having come from Corepower) and I really enjoy the Yin and Power Ashtanga classes. Staff is all very friendly and I'm never disappointed when I leave. read more

I've been a member at this specific YMCA for 3+ years now. I use the facility over the lunch hour 4 days per week since I work downtown and live up north. I love this Y! I love the atmosphere. I love the bright, natural light that is in the main workout area due to the big windows and the building being on a corner. I love that the cardio machines have their own personal televisions. I appreciate that the staff is friendly and always says hello and goodbye. I love the Sports Conditioning classes on Tuesdays at noon and Thursdays at 12:15. It's a tough class, but you will see results! The instructor pushes you while at the same time, he supervises everyone to ensure we are performing the exercises safely with proper form. I really love the camaraderie that comes with being a "regular" at this class. I highly recommend this YMCA. I saw on other reviews that people complained about the trainers being loud and encouraging bad behavior from their clients....I have never once seen that. Ever. I've been a loyal member of this gym for over 3 years with literally no complaints. And for those who complain that they think the cost of membership is high...maybe those people should shop around to other gyms in the downtown area. The membership dues at this Y are comparable or cheaper than other downtown gyms. Space is not cheap in downtown Denver, thus, your membership may be a bit higher than if you belonged to a gym that was not conveniently located downtown. read more

I'd give 1 star if I could, entirely based on 'customer service'. Gym facilities are adequate. But only adequate. There's only 1 useful squat rack, which easily gets tied up. There is a 2nd, but it is strangely very narrow, to the point that re-racking after an exhausting set gets tricky. They have an utterly ridiculous 30-day cancellation policy, which must be executed in person. So...if you're moving out of state and don't have a chance to stop by in person during a hectic move-out week, well, too bad. You'll get charged another $65 for the next 30 day of 'membership' which you cannot and will never use. And try to handle it by phone? Good luck. It'll take 3 calls to get an email address, upon which you get the, 'It's our policy' BS. Overall, I respect and fully support their mission. I've had *terrific* experiences at other YMCA locations in different states. But based on my personal experience, I would find somewhere else to support. read more

This gym is just fine, but their class schedule is a mess. I requested a schedule and class descriptions because the one posted on the website was out of date. I was emailed a schedule without descriptions. When I requested descriptions I was re-sent the schedule. I picked up a schedule and class descriptions in the gym. The class schedule is off, classes will be listed as in a block from 11-11:15, but the class is actually from 11:30-12:30. Also, the descriptions are out of date, and there are only descriptions for about 70% of the classes. I alerted the staff about these discrepancies and they have no interest in correcting them. If you are interested in attending a class, unfortunately you have to call and ask a staff member for an accurate time and description. They answer their phones regularly and are friendly and nice, but there is no concern that incorrect information is passed out at the gym and on the website. They are also very nice when you sign up and generally helpful. Unfortunately, they auto enroll you in a membership so the fee is immediately deducted, you have to call five days ahead of time to request to end your membership. (That's a sneaky way to charge people who are no longer interested in a membership.) The gym is clean, use-able, and the staff and instructors are nice. read more

This gym is very close to my office and is affordable. That is why I go. It is clean as well. However, the weight lifting room is very small and inadequate. You barely have room to deadlift. There is only one squat rack. The whole situation is very tight. Some of the people that go there are rude. They police the place because they are older and have been there forever. It is a terrible free weight experience. You don't even know what size barbell you are lifting because the stickers on them are gone. I am just waiting for something better to be found. read more

Been a member for 6 months now. Love everything about it, except the NOMSS (naked old man social society) in the locker room. Tunnel vision is recommended when you're downstairs amongst the NOMSS. Kind of expensive for the Y but I refuse to join 24 hour so I stay. The staff is nice, very friendly. Classes are included with membership and you get to go to other Colorado YMCA's so that's cool. No pool and the hours kind of suck. Wish they stayed open a little later on Saturdays and Sundays. Comfortable to work out at...no hot pants or shiny pecks strutting around. I LOVE this Y! The location is perfect, it has a dedicated parking lot a block away, there's never a wait for the machines, towels!, the atmosphere is not douchey, i mean, i could go on forever. It's definitely not the most upscale gym, but it gets the job done in a no frills relaxed way. I also like how there are other Y's around the city. Although I dont like having to pay $5 to go to the Glenndale Y, I go to that location sometimes just because it's nicer and there's never anyone there. Overall, love the Y! read more

This location discriminates against the disabled and homeless. I have been a member thru Silver Sneakers for about 3 months now. In that period of time 3 separate issue have arisen. The last issue prompted me to go above the local administration to Mr. Hiner (oversees the downtown Y) I called Mr. Hiner to set up an appointment so that I could sit and discuss all three issue. Within 30 minutes of setting up the appointment, Mr. Hiner called me back and said that there was no reason to come see him, that he had spoken to the Y and was backing up the decision made on the local level, without hearing my side at all. So the attitude I have received at the local level permeates upward. I am disabled, on Social Security, and homeless. I thought the C in YMCA stood for Christian. Would Jesus ever say come in out of the cold and warm up, but since you are not a full paying client you are only allowed to stay in the warmth for 30 minutes a day. Jesus would have invited everyone in out of the cold regardless of an ability to pay and they could have stayed all day. Tom at the YMCA has restricted my access to the Y to 30 minutes a day because after asking at the desk twice for more coffee I called to speak to some one in management about there being no coffee. Calling Tom to ask for coffee infuriated him to the point of banning me to 30 minutes a day at the Y. The following is the email that I sent to Mr Hiner about the issues that I have. Mr. Hiner, 18 Dec 14 The Y is guided by four core values: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility. That is a very high standard. I believe that your Y location downtown on the corner of 16th and Lincoln has forgot about the core values. I have three different issues with this facility. 1. You have a reward system in place at the Y for bringing in new clients. One free month for bringing in a new client, the equivalent of $69. I am a Silver Sneaker member and have brought in several new paying clients in the past 3 months. I've been told by Nathan that there is no reward whatsoever for Silver Sneakers. Nathan told me the Silver Sneaker account was only worth $35 a month. So I ask for a two week pass that I could give away to a friend and Nathan refused to even listen to my point. Why am I being discriminated against? Because I'm disabled? 2. I have on a couple occasions fallen asleep in your lobby. Tom has insisted on waking me up each time. Since then he has had a cold attitude towards me. I have also taken several photos of people sleeping in the lobby and not being bothered at all. Mr Hiner, I have obstructive sleep apnea and snore, that is the reason Tom keeps waking me up, not because I'm asleep. Again I'm being discriminated against, this time because I have a disease. 3. Today, 18 Dec 14, I came in about 12:30. Tom was at the desk and the coffee was out. I ask Tom if he could make some, he said sure. I waited 20 minutes and went back up and there was still no coffee. There was someone else at the desk and I ask them if they would make some. I then made a comment to the effect that I ask 20 minutes ago I just ask the wrong person. I then went outside to smoke a cigarette and to chat with a friend. About 10 minutes after I went outside I came back in to find that now both of the coffee carafes were completely gone. I went and sat down and called the Y and ask to speak to who ever was in charge. Tom answered the phone and I ask if we could get some coffee. I had already ask the front desk twice for coffee. Tom was pissed beyond belief that I called to get his attention concerning an issue at the Y. He was so pissed that he said that I and all the Silver Sneaker clients from now on could only us the Y for 30 minutes a day. I have been coming to the Y every day for the past couple months. I use the steam room, sauna, showers, watch tv, hang out in the lobby with other old farts like myself, I have shot basketball, attended meditation class on Sunday, attended weight watchers on Thursday, used your vending machines, but in Tom's judgement I am not using the Y correctly and has effectively banned me from the Y (except for 30 minutes a day). I am not causing a disturbance, I ask for coffee 3 times within 45 minutes and was banned because I used the phone to speak to who was in charge. I am beside myself with frustration with with the way I have been treated at this Y. It should not matter to the staff how I use the Y as long as I am not breaking any of your rules, and I'm pretty sure you have no rules about asking for coffee. Tom embarrassed me in front of two of my friends by throwing me out of the Y. I want an apology from Tom for his rude attitude in front of the same two friends. Caring, honesty, respect, responsibility is what I have received from all the Y employees except from Tom and Nathan. Thank you for your time and consideration. read more

I love working out at the Y! I have been a member since January 2008 and it is the only gym I have belonged to since moving to Denver. The main things I look for in a gym are (1) lots of group exercise classes, (2) convenient location, and (3) affordable. While it is a little pricey for what you are getting (i.e. the facilities aren't super-fancy and some of the equipment is a little out-dated), it is more than adequate for my needs. If you work downtown and like group exercise, the Y is probably the best value for your money. The staff is friendly and I have enjoyed taking the variety of group-exercise classes offered. They have enough yoga classes that I was able to stop going to a separate yoga studio that was much more expensive. (Side note - if you have heard that yoga is good for you but haven't quite gotten into it yet, I highly recommend Lauren's classes on Tuesdays and Friday evenings at 5:30pm. They are pretty basic and feel so relaxing and restorative!) I also love the Fitlinxx system that they offer, which records your sets and reps for many of the weight machines and keeps track of your progress during each work-out and over time. You can also log your cardio work-outs and you get an email each month reporting how much weight you lifted, how many minutes of cardio you performed, and how many calories burned. I'm not a huge fan of cardio equipment, but they recently upgraded to equipment that has an individual flatscreen tv at each machine and a spot to dock your iPod. It's almost enough to make me want to use the elliptical or treadmill every once in awhile! I would give this Y 5 stars if it had a pool, but unfortunately it does not. Luckily, you can use your membership at other Ys in the area that do have pools, which I occasionally take advantage of on the weekends. read more

I've been going to the Downtown Denver Y now for several years. I know of several members that have been there long than I have. There's a lady that's been going there since the 1980s! The Downtown YMCA has served us very well on all our fitness needs for the last few years. The Staff is especially friendly and always willing to help or answer questions. There is a wide range of equipment depending on one's focus and lots of different facilities for yoga, dance, basketball, etc. Yes, it is a historic building but it has character compared to the boring environments of health "clubs" which feel rushed, crowded and impersonal. I have never felt intimidated working out in the weight room as all the guys are very polite. It would be great if they had extended hours on the weekends but overall the Downtown YMCA offers an experience that keeps one wanting to work out! read more

I am searching for a gym home while I am in Denver temporarily. The Downtown YMCA offered me a 7 day pass which I used every day to get a feel for the place. It's mediocre, nothing special whatsoever. The tour I received was minimal and the clientele when I was there was mostly older men who love to roam the locker areas buck naked with all their wrinkly bits on proud display. I walked in on sex in the steam room ( the same guy) on 3 separate occasions. It would seem he is the resident steam room hoe. More importantly the staff was apathetic​ towards my prospective membership which made my decision not to join very easy. Thom had nerve to send me an email regarding a membership special to which I responded with my concerns and he couldn't be bothered to respond. I mentioned nothing about the sex, we all know that's happening there, however it would seem management would want to know how their staff is or isn't interacting with prospects. I just want to find the right gym. I have been less than impressed with the places I've visited. I would recommend this gym to anyone who has low expectations, looking for after workout hook ups and doesn't mind how old and raggedy it is. read more

I've been working out at this gym for a few months now and think its alright. It has everything you need and is rarely crowded. The equipment seems to work just fine and the location is great. Its pretty much a no frills/ no extras kind of gym. If you are used to the spa-like atmosphere of Pura-Vida or Lifetime Fitness, you are not going to find it here. Its not at all a scene or a serene zen spa. It has a mix of all ages as well as body types. I think most anyone would feel comfortable here. I'm on the fence about whether or not I will continue working out here once my contact is up, but will always consider it for a quick workout if i am in the area. read more

This site is very accommodating to visitors. The facilities are top notch, locks are loaned for free for day use, and the women's locker room has hair dryers and hair curlers inside. Cleanliness is a 10/10 and the people who work out there are respectful of the equipment and routinely clean up after using the machines. read more

I used to be a member at Flatirons Athletic Club in Boulder and I acutally much prefer this location of the YMCA. It is clean, centrally located and the staff are very friendly. The locker rooms are enormous and you never have to worry about getting dressed while maneuvering around tons of other people-even at 6AM. They have Fitlinxx, which once you are set up, keeps automatic track of all your workouts including weights. The machines are always in great condition. They have free coffee, free lockers and towels. And they do offer free parking about a block away. I've never used it b/c I go early before you have to pay the meters. All this plus you can use any satellite location you want. I love this place! read more

I work a block away so I was really hoping for a positive experiance. I went to check it out and I'd have to say it wasn't the nicest gym I've been to. The number 1 complaint I'd have would be the showers. Being that I was going to use this durning my lunch hours I wanted to make sure they had ok showers. Almost three years ago I discovered the "extreme fitness" and "sports conditioning" classes at the Y and I have been going to those classes 2-3 times a week since my first day. Lamar (the trainer who leads those classes) is truly a special person and he has inspired many Y members of all fitness levels and all ages (myself included) , to get fit! The YMCA in general and his class in particular gave me a community to belong to that kept me coming back week after week even when I was feeling tired, lazy, or just unmotivated because I knew he would be there along with all the other regulars. It's certainly more expensive than 24-hour but the sense of community (and the rigorous and diverse workouts that Lamar puts us through) have done more for my physical fitness than anything else I have ever been involved in (including running track for 5 years!) if your looking for a community to support your fitness goals and to have fun with check out these classes at the Y!! read more

For a downtown gym, the Y is a bargain. Having towels provided plus all of the additional toiletries in the locker room is a treat. I've been a member at the downtown Y for 5 years. It is great to have a place to workout and it's right by my office. The hours are great along with the trainers. Mary T is especially AWESOME. Her classes are hard but she is so upbeat and such a great motivator you just keep going. Not only are her classes great but she is an excellent personal trainer. Because of her training I am able to participate in Century rides, triathlons, 1/2 marathons... without training for each specific event. It's so nice to workout where you don't need to worry about the way you dress or how you work out. It's an extremely friendly atmosphere and I think the members seem to take on the positive attitude of the staff. Everyone is very helpful and friendly (both staff and members). It's always nice to be greeted when you arrive and as you leave... Kind of like the friendliness of the "Cheers Bar" but at the gym. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about the Y. The staff is consistently friendly, knowledgable, and willing to offer any help or assistance (even with first aid). The equipment is no frills but there are plenty of cardio machines and the machines are well maintained and versatile; I have yet to want for anything. (Plus it's very clean - members are generally great about cleaning up after themselves) The classes are excellent and the amenities are impressive: towels are available everywhere, the locker room is massive and includes a sauna, hairdryers, curling irons, and a iron for clothing. Best of all, there's no real contract involved and is month-to-month. Give it a shot - I'm happier with the Y than 24 hour fitness for a cheaper cost! read more

I wish ZERO stars was an option! Friend of mine has come in FOUR times to straighten out what should have been a simple task--moving his membership from the southeast Denver location to the downtown one. STILL has not been able to get it done. Rude black-haired girl at the front desk told him to go to the old location to fix it.....this was just plain WRONG advice, as the old location said the new one needs to get it transferred, NOT the old one. Next time he went in, they said he had to fill out an app again even though he's already in the system. I'm not sure I've ever seen a more unhelpful, stupid, and uncaring set of staff members at any business as I've seen at this downtown Y. My friend tells me that today (the FOURTH time he's gone in), Snotty at the reception desk walked away when she saw him come in, and started doing laundry in the back instead. He had to go chase down another staff member to try to help him. I'm on the phone with Corporate now telling them about this absurd experience. Maybe a few of these nasty downtown Y staff members will be standing in the unemployment line next week, which is what they deserve! **UPDATE**: Called regional admin. office, who say the problem has been solved. They said the staff at Central is trained to do this and should have been able to make the change in about a minute. We still don't know why they couldn't do this the first time, instead of forcing him to make four trips to the Central Y AND a 10-minute phone call to YMCA management office!!! Completely ridiculous. I received horrible customer service from the membership director at the YMCA located off of Lincoln, downtown. I called to cancel my membership for the month of November because of some financial hardship and because I called only four days before the 1stof the month, instead of five, they refused to help me (that is their policy apparently). I asked him if there was anything he could do for me, given that I have been a member for almost three years now, consistently. He flat out just said NO. I told him that I was planning to renew my membership again the following month, but I wasn't so sure now that they weren't giving me any sort of understanding, or even a simple "I am sorry". He then just literally laughed at me and said "okay". It is unbelievable to me that they would treat a long time customer/member that way. Other people at the YMCA in past years have been amazing and very helpful, so I was really surprised.
