This is an great little YMCA location just steps away from the center of Downtown Denver with lots of workout options, friendly staff, and good locker rooms. They are undergoing a huge renovation, so parts of the gym are closed or only half open, and this is the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars. Here's a breakdown of my experience: Weights: a great selection of both free weights and machines. Most of the free weights are downstairs, and include 3 squat racks, multiple benches, kettlebells and dumbbells in many different denominations, chain machines, a GHD, and a few other miscellaneous machines. Upstairs, there are a lot more machines (they have almost every type of iso machine you can think of), as well as a stretching area and cardio (see next paragraph). Both areas were picked up neatly and there was only a minimal or no wait for most things. Cardio: They have both aerodyne bikes and treadmills! I love these cardio machines, and I am glad to see them. They also have quite a few rowers too. Finally, although I don't use them, there are some regular treadmills and ellipticals. Construction: The basketball gym and track are both closed right now for renovations, as is half the weight area. I think there will be a lot more coming once those areas open, and the newly renovated areas were really nice. Locker rooms: HUGE! A ton of lockers (combo locks and you do not need to bring your own), quite a few clean showers and stalls, some seating, and even some bathroom amenities. Staff: Super friendly! When they heard I was visiting from the Twin Cities, they gave me a tour and answered a lot of my questions. All in all, this is a great YMCA location and a great place to work out in Downtown Denver! read more

Awful customer service. I signed up for a membership in order to get a discount on childcare and camps. Per their website (see picture), the Y starter membership provides a camp discount. I paid upfront for an annual membership ($400+) only to realize later that I was not getting the discount. When I asked why, they said the child needs to be a member. If that's the case, WHY is that not stated anywhere on the website or registration materials? I tried to get a refund and the staff refuse to do anything. Incredibly frustrated that I'm out over $400 with nothing to show for it as I never use any Y services, personally. read more

Terrible customer service. I called to cancel my membership and I guess whoever I spoke with didn't do what they were supposed to. When I realized I was still being charged, I reached out again to cancel and was expecting a refund. They refused to refund me because they "have no proof" of my call. Besides this, the gym is nothing special and there is no smith machine. read more

Time for an update as my old review is very outdated and they're in a transition period with a remodel project in progress. The response from management and coordination with the users of this facility is very disappointing. I am very familiar with the challenges of a remodel and all of the moving parts involved. There are a lot of staff and user needs as well as construction and class schedules needing to be considered, but I have been unable to receive communication regarding the remodel issues. Specifically, I use this facility for yoga classes. They offer around 24 classes weekly at a variety of times and created a new yoga space that is 1/3 the size of the previous studio. The message is that despite the use of yoga imagery on the building, the webpage and their promotional materials - yoga practitioners are not prioritized here. Several other class members and instructors have expressed frustrations and noted that when discussing with management, they did not feel prioritized either. This is very unfortunate. I see regulars there multiple times a week for years and it is very obvious that the downtown Y doesn't want to keep it's existing members nor attract new ones in regards to yoga. There is barely enough room for 10 people and an instructor in the new space and with that many users, we're kicking the walls and each other. Hopefully I will be able to share another updated review in the future about how they listened to our concerns and upgraded the yoga space to suit our needs. Ever though they have (very small) inclusivity signage on their front door, I would warn all Trans and Queer People to steer clear of this place. Of course all locker rooms can be problematic for us, but this YMCA recently added a home computer printed signage posted in the locker rooms, encouraging members to report anything "weird or unusual". Well, I just joined and have had two of my close trans/ queer friends also join, because our bathroom was being remodeled and we needed local shower access. When we saw this, it was obvious that this was pointed towards certain people. People already navigate so much trauma and body shame as trans and queer people, that business' don't need to give bigots the power to police people they find "unusual" in shower spaces. Like every other gym, you can just talk to a front desk person if anything challenging happens. As far as cleanliness, They do not air out and clean the steam room very often it seems. And their locker system leaves very few/ none for day members. read more

I hope your experience is different than mine. I cancelled my membership after I learned you have to pay for parking during every visit. (Only 5 available spots that are always taken). Next, i tried to cancel my membership by speaking with the man at the front desk. He told me there were no forms to fill out and all he needed was my name. Then proceeded to say "now I have a lot of work to do". Just to find out I've been getting charged for the last 4 months on the credit card that I don't use anymore. They won't issue a refund or even provide any sort of reimbursement. Terrible customer service. Decent facilities but terrible service. Find a better way to cancel memberships! read more

I really want to like this place. It's conveniently located downtown, it's not super expensive, and it has all the weight lifting equipment one could need. They just got new benches, all great. But the music... omg the music. Literally not a single song was written while any of us working out here were alive. Can you please play something from this century? Least. Hype. Music. Ever. Seriously, if I forget my headphones I just won't workout that day. It seriously feels like you stepped into the 70's. You guys realize this a gym right? I have been a member for a very long time. The facility has really gone down-hill the last couple years. When equipment breaks (such as the Sauna) it takes a long, long time for anything to get fixed and there is no communciation on progress. Front Desk is not kept informed and when you reach out to management they don't seem to care. read more

While I respect the purpose of the YMCA this particular one is problematic. The staff is friendly and much of the equipment is good but, the facility is not clean. The men's locker room is unhygienic, supplies of toilet paper, soaps and tissues are not always in place and cleaning obviously not done often enough. The worst example of this was a pile of human excrement in one of shower stalls recently. In this time of heightened concern for health and safety, this is not acceptable. read more

This is the second time that I've been a member of a YMCA. I chose to join the one here after moving from Louisville, KY as I really liked the branch I went to there, and this one is close to my apartment and is affordable. This branch holds up to the Louisville one fairly well. It's clean, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and there's solid amount of machines and free weights. Unlike Louisville however, there is no pool and there aren't any late night classes. I need that with my work proximity and schedule. Overall, this a solid gym that partly suits my needs. I am very glad that it is so close and affordable, but in the long term I'll likely look elsewhere. I got a "bawler" badge for checking in here. Apparently this has something to do with parenting. We have been Y members for about a year. Pros: Very friendly staff. Although it's an older building, staff works hard to keep it clean. Some of the equipment is fairly new. Lots of classes during the week. Cons: This is an old (and historic) building that needs renovation. I understand that there will be significant renovations starting in January. What I'm about to say may shock some of you. I hate yoga. Whew. There, I said it. I didn't start out hating it, but after a year and a half with little to no progress resulting in me just getting angry instead of still during a session, I decided that other methods of exercise would be better for me, so I started checking out gyms in my neck of the woods. Unfortunately, where I live has a proliferation of boutique gyms that cost an arm and a leg each month and I just can't afford that level of opulence in a place where, quite frankly, I'm going to end up being sweaty and splotchy and an overall mess. Enter in the downtown YMCA. While the monthly rate is still higher than, say, 24 hour fitness, $70 gets me access to a pretty state of the art gym and weight room, plus a TON of fitness classes. Some of which are not yoga. I was really impressed with this facility and how great the amenities are. This is NOT the Y I had in mind when I first went here to check it out. This is an incredible place, filled with nice, genuine people and I never feel self-conscious because there is just about every body type and fitness level there. I'm excited to go work out now, because I know I'll never have to get angry at myself for not being able to get Crow Pose right, even after all these years. read more

I enjoy their workout rooms, along with the abundance of cardio workout machines. They also run a wide assortment of exercise classes to cover most needs. Cycling, Yoga and the always intimidating Extreme Fitness. But the one thing I can not stand about this Y is the locker rooms. You must bring your own lock-- not really a biggie, but I have forgotten a few times. The locker rooms are a little cramped, yet they make up for it by offering most toiletry items, like mouthwash, styling gel and even Q-tips. So what's my gripe about the locker rooms? The NOMSS. For those of you unfamiliar with the acronym, that stands for the Nekkid Old Man Social Society. They rule the men's locker room and they don't like to leave. They'll stay in the locker room for hours.. talking amongst themselves and strolling about in their wrinkly buff-ness. Especially on weekday morning. As soon as you enter the locker room, it is not uncommon to see the Sergeant-At-Arms of the NOMSS sitting in a lounge chair, legs crossed and reading the newspaper with his withered grapes blowing in the breeze. You may think you've found a locker that will afford privacy and room to dress. Give it three minutes and you'll soon be flanked by NOMSS. Same for the shower. There may be 5 or 6 empty unused showerheads, but they'll soon gravitate to the ones right next to you. Sure, all gym lockers have nudity... but not LINGERING oldster nudity. I like to work out for about 60 minutes, shower, then change into normal clothes. I don't like to ride a cardio bike for 10 minutes, then wander around buck nekkid in the locker room for 50 minutes to socialize and watch CNN. At least put a frickin' towel on. read more

After being to many many YMCAs in the country, I can safely assert that this is one of the best. It's a very large facility that offers great exercise equipment and classes. The locker rooms are useful. I love the access to a hair dryer and other toiletries so I don't have to carry them in my bag, especially since I walked or biked here. Compared to the Southwest branch, this Y is less family oriented and better geared towards office people and adults without kids, which I prefer. It's cleaner, with a lot more amenities and lockers. The towels and magazines are always well stocked. People are more courteous (you can tell by the simple fact that machines are wiped down and less "sticky"). I've been a member of the Denver YMCA for almost a year now, and I love heading in there for my daily workout. Though the most crowded time of the day is during lunch, I am still (most of the time) able to find an open elliptical machine to use. I also really like how sweat and cleaning towels are made available to members, allowing for less paper waste. Two things about this Y really stand out to me. The first is the hospitable staff. They are always very friendly and welcoming both when arriving at and when leaving the facility. I also really like the yoga classes available here. My favorite instructor, Susan, teaches four days a week, and really knows how to kick your butt. I leave her class sweaty and with a sense of accomplishment. I also really like Dave-- he teaches on Thursdays and always makes the class laugh as he teaches us about yoga technique. I hesitate to give any gym 5 stars (it seems so contradictory!), but I've been going here for a little over a year and I've become quite fond of it. Favorite things: - Almost NEVER a wait for machines. There has been once or twice (in a year!) that I haven't been able to walk right onto a cardio machine, and the wait was only a couple minutes. - Great locker rooms. They're well-stocked (the ladies room has blow-dryers, straighteners, curling irons, q-tips, mouthwash etc.) and well laid out. I rent a locker so I don't have to lug my sneakers every day, and it's very reasonably priced. - Indoor bike rack! That alone is worth 5-stars to me. - Friendly and fun staff and lots of classes offered. But the real selling point? The location for the cost. You will never find anything in downtown for a fraction of this price. It's always busier at lunch than after work (DEFINITELY caters to downtown workers), but still never crowded. read more

Talk about a diverse clientele: downtown professionals, seniors, cap hill locals - interesting people left and right! Some darn good looking ones too ;-) Sometimes there might be a sketchy character but c'mon - it's the middle of the city! Every now and then you get your meat heads who like gazing in the mirror more than anything else but that's true of any gym. More often than not the atmosphere is light, urban and conducive with getting in a good work out! While there is no longer a pool the Metropolitan Y is still excellent! I can't sing higher praises for the awesome staff and fitness instructors. Yoga, spinning, step, zumba classes available...extreme fitness, outdoor fitness, all kinds of fitness running around this place! Want more? When I first moved to Denver, I spent a bit of time searching for a good gym. For me, one of the most important points is convenience-if its a pain to go then I probably won't. This Y is centrally located, provides a free (though limited) parking pass, and has nice ameneties like coffee, a dry and wet sauna, etc. But what really puts this at four stars is the fact that they have this great system called Fitlinxx, which basically is a mini computer attached to all their machines that will save and track your progress for you. I find it so easy to actually make progress in my workout routines because Fitlinxx tells me exactly where I stand against my previous visits, if I'm doing the full range of motion, and the correct speed. I've never seen this in a gym and I love it. Getting set up and introduced to the system is complimentary upon joining. It is a bit pricey for a y-especially if you're a young adult and not a student, but I think it is a worthwhile investment if you live downtown. read more

A little pricey for the Y, especially since they don't have a pool but they do have an indoor running track which was my #1 need for a gym We used a free week before joining and are joining on the family plan which works out to $50 a month for each of us. At that price I think it's a fair value as it includes the classes and visits to all CO Y facilities. This gym rocks. I first came here on a visit to Denver over the 4th of July last year -- I returned on this recent trip, and paid the relatively cheap $15 fee for a day pass. The gym is well-equipped for the weight lifters with a room devoted to free weights, and a main room containing all the cool machines for resistance training. There are lots of cardio machines, including all your favorites (stair masters, elliptical machines, treadmills), and all of them have private TVs. Score! There is also a lot of space for stretching & abs -- an unusual commodity for the modern day gym. Last, there is an enormous locker room with towel service & a huge shower area. Also, at least in the men's locker room, there's a sauna and a steam room. Did I mention the locker room is enormous? It is -- I love not having to be bumped and jostled when I'm changing clothes before/after a workout. Oh, and there's a small lounge in the locker room with a TV, and a large co-ed lounge near the entrance. Nice, friendly staff rounds out the experience -- 5 stars for an excellent facility. read more

I am still fairly new to this gym, but so far I am enjoying it. It is very low key- you definitely won't be intimidated by huge muscle men here, but the clientele is very diverse. There are a lot of 20 - 30 year olds who live in the neighborhood and then some older folks who work downtown, etc. It's really chill- which I like! Pros: -Towels -Great locker room w/ lockers, showers, etc. -TVs built into each piece of cardio equipment (HUGE PRO!) -Tons of equipment Cons: -Parking (but I live close and walk anyway) -No pool -Very sectioned off rooms- wish free weights were closer to the resistance machines -Really miss my abs class at my last gym -Not a ton of classes for people after 6 p.m. read more

Convenient if you're living in or around downtown, but I didn't find that it met my expectations based on other YMCA's I've frequented. It has a wealth of cardio equipment, and most in decent shape, but I was most underwhelmed by the small weight training areas. Many of the weights and machines are older and aren't in the best shape. Also, what's up with having two separate areas for the machines? Overall, I don't feel this is quite up to par with other YMCA's I've been to. I have been going to the downtown Y for years. Due to COVID it was closed for months. I hesitated to go back but 4 months ago I made the bold move. I am so impressed with how they are keeping it clean and safe. I get my temperature taken at the front desk, it is extremely clean, everyone wears a mask and there are cleaning supplies/Sanitizer everywhere you look. Go back or sign up. I go weekly. read more

The customer service at this gym is outstanding. Best I have seen in 10 years being at rec centers and gyms. I actually joined 24 hour along with a week pass at this Y(they are both equal distance from me). However I am cancelling my 24 hour. It is a bit more with my membership at this facility, but the front desk staff blew me away, and the facility is very clean/never overly crowded. Cassie and John( front desk) seriously were professional, and helped me with any questions with no pressure to join, just friendly and kept it very simple. Customer service at its finest. The Denver Downtown YMCA is very spotty in regards to it being a good Gym to sign up for or not. First off all the membership is $50.00 a month; allow me to tell you what it is that you get for $50 a month: State of the art equipment, however most of it is patched up with electrical tape due to the fact that it is falling apart. I also cannot think of a day that I have gone to the gym and at least 2-3 of their machines were out of order. Aside from the staff not seeming to care about the equipment the members also seem to have an equally hard time caring about the equipment. Members will abuse the machines and push them beyond their limit. Let's not forget the fact that you have a bunch of meat heads there that slam the weight machines down as hard as they can. This will overall hurt the longevity of the equipment and I am assuming in the long run drive up membership prices. Members also seem to have the hardest time cleaning the machines after use, they are not immune from sweating frankly it was gross. The staff most of the time is very unfriendly not saying hello or goodbye as you come and leave. They seem to be lacking basic customer service skills. They could never get my billing right, they would not charge me on the days they said they would, and they would also tell me I had not paid when I had, it withdraws automatically...this would cause me at times to take an additional 30 minutes with the staff to figure out why this was, each time I was not at fault it was their systems. Canceling your membership will be no easy task. I explained to them that I would not be able to make it down to cancel due to work conflicts. They told me to email Thom Hartman to do this since I could not make it down. I sent them an email and was still charged $50.00 for the month. I called to make sure my membership was cancelled, lucky me, Thom was the one who answered the phone. He told me the email must have gone to his spam folder and that I should just come down to cancel my membership. I told him I would not be able to, so he decided to pry into my personal life and ask why...I told him my work would not allow me to take the time off. He did not bother to cancel me right then and there or check his spam folder. He simply told me to try and make it down. I told him I would prefer to email as I had already given him my reasons, he said ok and our call ended. I emailed Thom again on May 28th politely stating that I would like to cancel my membership and explaining my private and personal reasons to him. I did not hear back from Thom Hartman. I then had to send a less polite email threatening to do what I am doing now to complain. I expressed to Thom that I felt this was poor customer service. On June 3rd I finally received an email stating my membership was cancelled, not so much as a sorry or we appreciated your membership...just a very rude "this has been taken care of." I understand some folks may have positive experiences with this gym but I have not. I hope this helps someone on the fence of joining make an educated decision. read more

Definitely a good option with amenities for a gym in the downtown area. The increasing prices based on age show how affordable it is, especially when compared to all the other gyms in the area. They have pretty much everything except for the pool. Free weights, cardio area, basketball, kid care, large locker rooms with saunas and steam rooms, and much more. It's also in a convenient area right next to the 16th Street mall bus stop. read more

When people were working on building this new YMCA gym, they definitely had fun, they created spacious offices, large hallways which can be used as football field....BUT they forgot that it is gym and one of the main rooms should be a LOCKER ROOM! That area that's is used by adults is not supposed to be a size of kindergarten locker room..... read more

Use to be a great gym, but the knucklehead trainers have taken over. The trainers are loud and obnixous and encourage bad behavior from their clients. I have seen them take up 4 machines during the rush hour at lunch, they have people running up and down the narrow spaces in the gym. It is one thing to have a personal trainer, it is another to try to run a boot camp in the middle of a busy gym. Also they have way to little open space, tons of equipment that no one uses, just poor space management. However, I will say the rest of the staff is great, very friendly. read more

I reviewed this facility highly last time and I still want to love it but the filthy, stinking, unhealthy steam room and sauna in the men's dressing room are a disgrace. It's insulting that the management thinks so little of us. I've actually had to complain about something growing on the walls. That was removed but the smells are unbearable at times and I've never known either room to be deep cleaned. I understand new rooms are being constructed now, hopefully the current cleaning regime will not be maintained. read more

Extreme value for your dollar. Not a trendy start-up with sleek branding, it's the Y. If you like paying for a brand and not for functionality this isn't your place. You get great classes (unlimited included with the monthly fee), equipment, service and they have a dry sauna. The dry sauna sold me. You guys have the worst weekend hours I have ever seen. I am never able to go to the gym on the weekends at all. I have a job and a career and I end up having to work. The worst problem is that you guys don't even open early on the weekends so that I can get in there before work. You are literally closed every hour that I am at work and have no ability to make it there. Closing your doors at 6 p.m. is an extreme inconvenience especially for a gym that costs damn near $50 a month. You guys desperately need to reconsider keeping your establishment open past 6 p.m. . It is ridiculous. I will never recommend you to anyone else, at least until you change your hours of operations on the weekend read more

A beautiful YMCA and by far the cheapest and best option in downtown Denver. Though they don't have a pool, they make up for it with a sauna and a steam room in the women's locker room. Everything is kept very clean, and the locker room is esp. large with a TV and everything else you could imagine. Spin classes are high quality as well as the Yoga classes (having come from Corepower) and I really enjoy the Yin and Power Ashtanga classes. Staff is all very friendly and I'm never disappointed when I leave. read more
