I brought in my car when it wouldn't start and it ended up having four separate issues; they had it done in two days and set me up with Enterprise to have a rental car in the meantime. AND called me an Uber to get to the Enterprise store. A few days later I heard a strange noise in the back of my car. Apparently my lug nuts on my tires were loose, they tightened all of them and didn't charge me anything even though they didn't even touch my tired in the repair! They are not who I would recommend. I called for a quote to replace the serpentine belt and I was told $350. The cost of the belt is about $40. The time for labor takes about 15 minutes and is really easy. The VW dealership only charges half and everyone knows the dealership is the most expensive usually. I took my car in about three months ago for a faulty fan sensor. The entire fan assembly part retails for about $200. After about $4000 of quoted repairs ($2000 for the fan replacement), they also quoted me $500 to replace a dead battery. Five hundred dollars for a car battery that should be $250 maximum. The battery was under warranty with AAA so I said I will get them to replace it for free. The kicker is that when AAA tested the battery it was still working completely fine. Three months later the battery is in good health. I wish I would've read other reviews before taking my vehicle here, but let this be a warning to anyone else looking to use this shop. They are dishonest, will overcharge you for parts, try to sell you on unnecessary services, and charge exorbitant labor fees. Seek anywhere else. read more

I brought my car in for an oil change and was given a "complimentary inspection," only to be quoted nearly $6,000 in repairs, many labeled as urgent and necessary (pump replacement, multiple leaks, etc.). Something about the whole situation didn't feel right, so I sought a second opinion from another well-established, reputable shop. That shop verified that none of the repairs were needed. They actually apologized to me and said I had been taken advantage of, and strongly advised that I not return to the first shop. This wasn't a small difference in estimates, it was a complete contradiction. What stood out most is that this second shop had every opportunity to take advantage of me as well, but they didn't. They were honest and transparent, which made Downing Street Garage's behavior even more infuriating. Honesty goes a long way, especially in an industry where customers are often vulnerable. I'm furious at how blatantly I was misled. Do not let this place take advantage of you. Get a second opinion before agreeing to anything. read more

As another review had mentioned if this shop's employees feel that you're not well versed in auto repair they will rip you off and suggest things to be done that do not need to be done. Honestly a despicable business that has a target on anyone without vehicle knowledge. This crooked, backyard chop shop took my friends vehicle in to check out the AC system. Attached is their so called "service report" detailing the "work" performed. I looked into the system after my friend was told that the ac system was a total loss and EVERY COMPONENT in the system needed replaced..according to Downing Street Garage. Upon my legitimate troubleshooting of the system I found that the cable to the temperature control was not connected. The friend had recently had a new radio installed and the cable had failed to be connected when that work was done. I visited their shop twice to seek further information on this repair prior to my inspection. Upon both visits the manager was nowhere to be found and their service writers boldly lied to my face about having additional service repair notes and weren't capable of sharing. The shop front desk clerk also stated that they must have just "forgotten" to include, all this while no additional information was ever provided. Shops like this deserve to be well know for what they are. Despicable, lowly hoards of individuals who wait around to take advantage of innocent customers with little to no vehicle knowledge. My first experience here was on my Ford Escape. A simple oil change. They stripped my oil pan plug resulting in an oil leak. I brought it back they said these thing happen and I wound up having to buy a whole new pan. Second experience, a VW Tiguan. Same thing but they took care of it but charged for another oil change. Third, Ford Explorer, they talked me into a new fuel pump, said they could smell gas, I never ever had but I took their word for it cost me $1600 which included an oil change. Afterwards I was checking under my hood and realized my hose clamps were loose. Three strikes you're out. read more

This shop is pristine - a big clue to the fastidiousness of the crew and owner - its like a LearJet garage. I needed a plastic bumper piece reattached to the frame with zip-ties but they did better than that. I also needed a tail light replaced. Total cost? Well, it cost me more to rent the damn scooter from my home in Cap Hill to the garage than the cost of repairs. These people restored peace with honesty and integrity. They always go above and beyond what I ask them to do. The other day I didn't have an appointment and had a ski resort parking sticker stuck on my car window. They took it off for no charge and I did not even ask for help. They are so kind and always help me with whatever I need. After my Mercedes broke down on the road, AAA brought my car to this shop. after examination the staff told me that my engine's 5th cylinder was misfiring and recommended me to get a whole new engine saying that 1. having 160k miles on an engine is a lot and 2. that the cylinder was misfiring because something got in it and can spread through the whole engine, so its safer to get a new one. They game me an estimate of $7 000. I just got a second opinion today. Apparently my ignition coil was faulty. with the price of the part and labor it costed me $200 to fix my car. I got a flat tire on the way to pick up my daughter from daycare. I stopped at another mechanic down the street who, (after staring at me from inside the garage for several minutes), told me that they were too busy to help with the tire. When I got to Downing Street Garage I told them about my situation and within a few minutes one of the guys behind the counter turned into a formula one pit crew member. He grabbed my keys and by the time I could swipe my credit card and sign the receipt my tire was fixed and I was back on the road. Our daycare charges us $2/minute that we are late so they saved me a fortune. Even if I had called AAA and waited I would still be out a bunch of money. I drive by here every day on my way home from work and its nice to know that if I have any issues in transit I can count on these guys. read more

You're paying for convenience and speed here, but be careful and call around first. Moving to a new garage wasn't worth the marginal savings for me so I got alternator replaced. Extremely kind, fast service. Expect very high diagnostic prices and expensive labor, and watch out for questionable recommendations. They recommended I change my transmission fluid...which is always a red flag...especially since we got it done 10K ago! Having recently moved to Denver I was hoping to find a trustworthy mechanic and a friend recommended Downing Street Garage. They were booked out so I saw that as a good sign and when I rolled up they offered me a ride to/from my work (which also gave a warm and fuzzy feeling). Cut to eight hours later I receive a call and "recommendations" after my standard $47 oil change. Like every other yelp review of Downing Street (wish I would have checked yelp beforehand), they suggested $600+ worth of unnecessary repairs. Steam clean my engine and put a super duper chemical in it to read with a UV light where there was a leak for $300+ (and that's just the diagnosis, puh-leez!). Maybe it's due to the fact that they're all up in the ritzy side of town and rent costs a lot so they need to make serious money on every Tom, Dick and Jane that walks in the shop but I'm not interested in being taken for a ride. No one suggested another mechanic after their experience at Downing although they said they got second opinions. Well I won't leave you hanging with no solution. Luckily I found an uber-trustworthy mechanic in the Highlands that gave me a second opinion and low and behold, my car's fine! . I called them before I had my car towed, told them the make and model, the guy said we are always cheaper and quicker than the dealership bring it over. I had it towed over. He called me after $200 of diagnostic fees and he said I need a new fuel pump that would cost me $1,760! I called my dealership to verify that price and they said their price was $599. I immediately called back, he said hold on, then said I can do it for $800. So if I didn't call he was going to gauge me nearly $1000. The dealership said 5 days Downing Street took 12. They are more expensive and take longer than the dealership. These people are complete crooks trying to take advantage of inoperable cars on their lot. The legal definition of that is extortion. I used to go to this place all the and always heard really good things about it. I ended up inheriting a subaru from some family and took it in here to get an oil change. The first time they said a ton of work needed to be done, so I invested about $1,000 in the car. I had just gotten the car and trusted them so I went ahead with it. The next oil change the said that another $1,000 of work was needed. I checked in with my family and showed them the old receipt and downing streets recommendation for the new work. It turned out that the exact work had been done two months prior. Downing Street was fabricating faulty equipment. I took it to two other shops just to see if the work really needed to be done and both shops said definitely not. Please don't waste your money here! Super courteous, quick service is hard to find these days, but Downing Street Garage is one of those rare shops that manages to pull off both. AAA-approved and filled with a long history of accurate repairs, it's a reliable shop - with one caveat; it's damn expensive. Diagnostics range from $70-140, repair and labor costs an arm and a leg, and they tend to recommend service to items you may just have replaced less than a month ago. I'm all for honest service, but despite the fact they took care of my main issue in record time (and even offered free pickup service to my car), a cheaper dent to the wallet and less unnecessary repair recommendations would've been even better. read more

I'm never taking my car to any other ever place again! A few months ago my brakes died (while driving). Lovely. I asked AAA to tow my car to the nearest AAA approved shop near my house and this is where I landed. Downing St was incredibly efficient, professional, and prompt when it came to inspecting my car to assert what needed to specifically be done, and communicated with me immediately upon knowing the problems, estimate, and time frame we were looking at. Surprise of all surprises, not only were they done ahead of schedule but it cost less than what the estimate was said to be. (I didn't know any of that could happen at garages....). Unfortunately, my bank (falsely) believed that my checkbook had been stolen (I used a new batch of checks) and cancelled the check. This was not (by my bank) brought to my attention for at least a week and Downing St only was notified a week after that. Long story short, my bank never pushed the check through (even after I gave permission) and Downing St obviously was wondering where the money went. After a bit of back and forth between my bank and Downing St, it was resolved. More importantly, Downing St was nice and never used intimidation tactics and were completely understanding of the fact that it was the bank and not me being screwy. The whole staff is very friendly and it feels like the kind of garage you'd find in a small, quaint town, as opposed to a bonafide city. I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

There are few things in life more aggravating than car problems! We have found the cure for auto angst at the Downing Street Garage. Every time an issue arises we call the guys, let them know what's up and they fit us right in. Recently I called for a minor check of fluids and they said bring it in anytime and we'll do it immediately. From rebuilding my power steering system within a day, to oil changes, the service is friendly, efficient, and the prices are fair. One other thing I like is the shop is immaculate and attractive, and the guys are knowledgeable and polite. I am fortunate to live close to this first-rate auto repair shop! read more

Great garage, They have serviced a 69 camaro with a 450 horsepower carburated engine, (which at altitude is not mean feat) a porsche and a Toyota Highlander Hybrid for me and every experience has been good. The work performed was done on time, was done as far as I can tell correctly, (everything works as advertised) and was done for the price qouted. They were kind enough to give me some options on the camaro , installing a fuel injection system instead of replacing and correctly tuning the carb. which I turned down because of cost. What is expensive ? Getting it right the first time at the price qouted and on time. OR having to go back numerous times because the mechanics don't really know what they are doing? I'll go with paying more the first time and getting it right any day. I know I can count on these guys and all my girls have their numbers. When the dealer gave me a huge price tag for a potential fix for my car, I decided to call around to some local garages that I'd heard good things about. One was able to give me a quote on the dealer's estimate of problems in 5 minutes. Not so with Downing Street Garage. Although I've heard really good things about them, after 2 days and 3 phone calls, they're still working on giving me a potential price. Even when I asked if they could just give me a number somewhere in the thousands, still nothing. And not only that, the person said she needed to worry about the cars they already had in the garage, so if I wanted to tow it over they could get me an estimate sooner. Why can other garages give an estimate but not this one? I've kept my car at the dealer for two days now just so I could get an estimate from this garage that I've heard such great things about. My car's alternator and battery died, so my car was towed here. When I came to pick up my car, the lock was broken and there was an odd clicking sound. When I called, I spoke to the manager (Tyson) who immediately became argumentative and denied having anything to do with the issues. He refused to even take a look at the issue, accusing me of being "one of those 'ever-since' people", referring to how 'ever since' I took my car in, more issues have been created. I made my appointment on their website and was contacted right away to confirm the appointment. I talked to the new owner, Ben, who was really nice- he told me about the methods they use to keep the shop "green." The job was done pretty quickly, and my car was clean and ran well when I picked it up-- what more can you ask for. Swung by late one evening to look at a fast leaking tire. They got it repaired that night and my mind was put to ease on the drive home.

Boosts: honest and knowledgeable, clean. Knocks: no estimates, try to add on services that aren't needed or could wait I've taken my Tahoe here three times to get major repairs done (because I don't trust the dealership). Once to get my rear differential replaced, to get my transmission flushed and to get a bearing replaced in my front axel. Every time they tell you how they're going to diagnose it, then will call you and tell how they're going to fix it. For instance, for the last couple of weeks I've been hearing a grinding noise coming from the front of my truck. I stop by and the tech drives my car with me in the passenger seat so we can both hear it. They then attach microphones below the car so they can pinpoint they noise ($130 for noise diagnosis BTW). They then call you and tell you how much it's going to cost. Sometime you're like "PHEW" and sometimes you're like "OH S*%&!" As with other reviewers, I'd like a ballpark range on how much I'm going to have to spend. They really stay vague up front. They then tried to sell me a fuel injector cleaning service. No thanks. Even with these knocks, I would definitely come back. In my opinion, most auto repair places probably are the same and you're not going to find one with 4 or 5 stars. read more

I went in for a routine oil change, and they definitely did the job in a professional and timely fashion. The receptionist that I spoke with when I made the appointment was friendly and thorough. The one part of the service that I thought was a little bizarre, was that after my routine oil change they had a list ready for me of $800 worth of repairs that needed to be done. I'm still waiting on getting a second opinion, but I'm pretty sure the car doesn't actually need all that work done, especially since it was just given a once over of all repairs only 10 months ago. I'm upping them to four stars because a few weeks after I went to the garage, I received a very nice note from the owners thanking me for my business. Customer service works. read more
