This review is long overdue! I was referred to Astro Automotive back in 2015 by a friend after I'd recently moved to Denver. Their oil changes are well-priced and always completed more quickly than I expect! Brian, Tim, and the rest of their staff are friendly, courteous, and honest - that last part is super important, especially as a young person who's admittedly not particularly car-saavy. Case-in-point: my passenger door was damaged several years ago after some irresponsible dingdong hit me during rush hour - the door wasn't *totally* broken, but it would only open if I used the inside door handle because the outside handle seemed dented/stuck after the impact. I called Brian, explained the situation, and he advised that I might need new door clips (that might not be the technical term but that's what I remember) to resolve that issue, and quoted me about $200 for parts and labor. I dropped off my car and got an unexpected call later that afternoon: they had been able to use some elbow grease and finagled the door so it was working again without any new parts! I ended up only being charged $35-40ish for labor, if I recall correctly which was a SWEET deal. Most recently, I got a free inspection from a dealership while my car had a recall repair and they quoted me a minimum $720+ (without new parts) to replace bushings of the lower control arms on the front end of my car, then realign it, plus they would need to keep my car overnight to complete the repair. I immediately called Brian instead, explained what the other mechanic had told me, and Brian got me scheduled for an appointment not even 48 hours after my call! Even better, he said the repair would only take one business day. All told, in my opinion it is MUCH more worthwhile to support a local, small business owner rather than go to a chain mechanic or big dealership who are likely looking to upsell you on as many features as possible. You really can't go wrong with the folks at Astro Automotive! :) read more

This is by far my favorite mechanic shop that I've ever been to. The owners went out of their way to explain to me everything that was wrong with my vehicle and everything that would be done to fix it (there were years worth of built up issues). They solved issues that two previous mechanics were not able to address/fix successfully, AND they charged less for the same services that I've paid 2-3x more for at other places. When the heater in my Jeep went, I started looking for a good reliable no-BS place to take it in. I found Astro, with only one 5 star review on Yelp, but saw that it was walking distance from my house. After reading that they are highly recommended by the Colorado Jeep 4x4 club, I was sold. They got to the bottom of it and found a massive short with melted wires. They fixed it up in no time! They were honest and they didn't overcharge so of course I was more than willing to go back here. Unfortunately, I hit some ice on Vail Pass and spun that Jeep like crazy and ended up totaling it. When I found a replacement Jeep, I took it in and for $80, they told me everything that was wrong with it, and helped me prioritize the things that REALLY needed to get done. When I took it in to get the Water Pump fixed, they found out that the Radiator needed to be replaced too, and since they hadn't noticed that in the used car evaluation, they discounted the bill. I have made many trips to Astro Automotive with the "new to me" Jeep and Astro has always provided me friendly, prompt and honest service. I would highly recommend them. read more

Once upon a time, I drove a POS. You know what I mean... we've all had one. But I loved my POS. It was a 1989 Toyota All-Trac wagon, and it was reliable, in good condition, and paid-for. She may have been a POS, but she was MY POS. My POS never let me down. Even at the age of 17 (that's 93 in car years), she cruised the Denver streets and Colorado mountain like a car half her age. While my friends' (younger and cooler) cars were in and out of the repair shops on a regular basis, my POS kept on trucking. I attributed it to good genes on her part (mad ups for Toyotas, yo,) and quality care on mine. But then, one day, my sweet little POS stopped running and wouldn't start again. Various sources attributed it to my alternator, my starter, my engine... and just about everything else under the sun. Quotes from other mechanics came in at a MINIMUM of $800. Ouch. Finally, a friend pointed me in the direction of Astro Automotive... so I had my POS towed in. "I'm pretty sure I need a new alternator," I told the guys at the counter. Long story short, they cleaned up my battery terminal connections and replaced some spark plugs and my POS was running perfectly again! For less than $100!! Five stars for complete honesty and competence. These guys could've taken me for a serious ride, but they played it straight. My POS has long since RIP'd, but I'll always take my cars to Astro. read more

Although the truck gave more problems then we thought, the group always kept us informed and even provided loaner cars for our work commute. Astro's in my neighborhood, and it had good reviews, so when my car battery needed to be replaced and I was irritated that everywhere said I'd need to make an appointment, I figured a local place was worth a try. Brian drove over to my house to give me a jump, and tried a few things to get my car open when the key wouldn't work. I ended up having to call auto rescue for a proper lockout service, but I appreciated the effort. Once I finally got my car to the shop (it wouldn't go more than 15mph on the way, which was terrifying!), Brian replaced the battery and re-ran all the electric systems and checked the check engine light, and didn't try to upsell me on any services I didn't need. Best part: I had my car back on the same day. Friendly, fast, no more than I needed - what's not to like? read more

Odd, I'm usually a great judge of character and integrity, but I just got it dead wrong here. I made the call after reading the Yelp reviews and getting a helpful technician on the phone who said they could fix my car "no problem." I have a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica and it was having electric problems so they said they'd check it out and get it fixed. A plus I must give Astro is that they were able to take the car on short notice the same day. I brought the car down and dropped it off, they said they would call later that afternoon but I never heard back. At 4:30 I called and they said come down it would be ready. Upon arriving, they said it was just a simple dead battery that was the culprit and they had changed it out. The total, a whopping $200 for a battery change. Aghast, I shook my head, plopped down my plastic and informed the people at the place that they had just lost a serious customer, and I was in fact going to have a 100,000 mile service done on my van along with a 60,000 mile service on the Chrysler if they had treated me well. Instead they went for the quick, shortsighted cash-out on a $60 battery, and I won't be going back. Very disappointed. read more

I brought a used car here to get an inspection before I bought it because a (male) friend recommended them. They didn't say anything about a bent frame, or a dented oil pan. However, after I purchased the car they saw that the oil pan was dented and would have to be completely replaced in order to have an oil change. They charged me over $500 for that repair and wouldn't knock off the price of the inspection when I asked since they missed that. read more

I was traveling through Denver on my way across the country. Though I had my vehicle serviced before I left home, it was acting a bit off through those large mountain passes to Breck. Knowing I'd need to scale quite a few more mountains during this trip, I extended my stay in Denver and left my car at Astro. I dropped it off first thing in the morning. They had it most of the day (from 7:30am until 2:30pm) but they did a full point inspection. Nothing was wrong, other than my car just being a weeny about going up large hills. I have taken my jeep to Astro for three different repairs. I initially had taken it to the Jeep dealership when my heat was not working. I was charged $112 dollars for a diagnosis. It was the radiator and they wanted to charge me close to $700 to fix it, a friend referred me to Astro and they fixed it for about half as much as the dealership wanted. On my last visit, I checked with a friend that is knowledgeable about vehicles and he said it sounds as if they were very fair and reasonable with the diagnosis (my brake pedal went mushy and they replaced the rear brakes...something the dealership had wanted to do, again for twice as much). Astro even gave me a loaner vehicle on this visit, but if the loaner is not available they are within walking distance of the light rail. I feel Astro Automotive is very fair, and will be returning for years to come. read more

I am SO grateful a friend referred me to Astro Automotive. I am looking to buy a used car, but I know nothing about the mechanics of a car, and wanted it inspected by an independent mechanic before closing the deal. I was able to call Astro and make an appointment the day before, and when I arrived, they were able to take the car right away. Dave did a thorough inspection and walked me through the whole thing after, explaining both the cost and the ramifications of each issue he found. Based on the inspection, I decided to go back to the dealer and negotiate, and Dave gave me good talking points for the dealer and also his opinion on what kind of deal I should take vs walk from. The dealer unexpectedly gave me a different option than we anticipated, and I called Astro from the dealership - and Dave advised me that this was now a good deal and I should go for it. I felt so much more comfortable moving forward with the purchase thanks to Dave's advice - this inspection was GREAT value, and saved me over $3000!! Never taking my car back to Astro because they were just bad at repairing my car...aka their job. Took my Buick Lesabre in last December for hard warm starts and stalls at low RPMs. Astro was sure they'd found the problem after checking the computer and replaced my ICM for $400 (among other repairs I had them do, I spent just over $1,000). About 5-6 weeks later the car starts doing the exact same thing so I take it back to Astro and not only do they charge me again just for bringing my car in, they also tell me I need another $325 in repairs. I immediately took my car to another auto repair place, UPON VISUAL INSPECTION, they found a 6" rubber hose going to the ICM was rotted out and they fixed it free of charge...This made me realize that Astro may be full of 'technicians' who can read what the vehicle's computer says is wrong but lack common car repair sense to do much else...Astro will never receive another penny of my money and I will continue to tell neighbors in Baker about this bad experience. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere that has actual car mechanics. read more

I'm fairly positive astro purposely snipped the wiring to my air conditioning during one of my maintenence visits because I went to no other car shop during the time my ac stopped working. I was told my compressor needed to be replaced and it would cost over a thousand dollars. My car is a 2002 and I figured it was unfortunate normal wear and tear, and I couldn't justify the fix since my car is worth $2500. Fast forward two years later when my dad moved to Colorado and told me he could fix my compressor for under two hundred dollars since the main cost to replace a compressor comes from labor (it can take a full day). Before he started the work he decided to first check the wiring and sure enough it was cut in half! He's an electrician and simply rewired it at zero cost in parts, and now my ac is back up and running. read more
