    Jalapeño Cornbread Pulled Pork Sandwich

Came from Fairhope just to try the Jalapeño Cornbread Pulled Pork Sandwich. My wife and I split it. It was huge and it was amazing. Heard about their peach cobbler from reviews here and tried it too. Warm and wonderful.

Ok, this gem deserves more recognition. I passed it on the highway and noticed the smoke coming from the building. I found out that it was a smokehouse and found a very interesting and southern style menu. The Hotcake sandwiches have just about everything on the menu in it, and I highly recommend stopping by to check out this place.

Down South Barbecue is at 19891 County Rd. 10, Foley, AL, in the gravel area behind the Shell station. As of July 2022, this BBQ joint has a new owner, Golden Parachute Enterprises LLC which is a newly formed local Foley company that makes this a locally owned and operated business, and I prefer those. While it's been serving barbecue on the coast, on the way to the Alabama beaches, for many years however now there's a new sheriff in town so I thought it's about time to chime in on the unique experience. I'm not going to compare the old owners to the new so this is strictly what to expect now. I miss the cornbread sandwiches, but the cobblers are good, and the sides are good, but let's talk Q. The brisket is not bad at all, not Texas but good, but the ribs are seriously legit. I've had ribs all over the country, and dozens of spots in Memphis and as compared to Memphis ribs these are very good. They're served dry, as Memphis does, and their barbecue sauce is perfect for these ribs. Tender, not too fatty, juicy, and just the right amount of smoke. If you're looking for a darn good rib they have got them here. Located between Foley and Gulf Shores just off Hwy 59. Look for it behind the shell station at the intersection of County Rd 10 & Hwy 59. There's outside dining only with picnic tables both covered and open-air as well as covered and screened-in too. Closed Sun, Mon Tues. In the past payment was by cash & checks only but they now accept cards as well. Bottom line: Friendly windows service, reasonably priced, and smokey as Q should be. Recommended Hours: Wed-Fri 10am-6pm Saturday 10am-4pm (Seasonal hours may vary) Both their website and Facebook pages are out of date but here they are: https://m.downsouthbbq.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Down-South-BBQ/185384064809909

So I won 1 lb of pork for a year and today was the day we picked it up.. it was delicious ,tender ,cooked perfectly..we also got homemade mustard potato salad and homemade Cole slaw to to along with it..it was all so tasty and the people were so friendly..on our way out the owner came out to talk ,what a nice guy..I can't wait to go back and try the turkey plate ..and you can smell it a just like they advertise.. you won't be disappointed as I m sure everything there is awesome .. this is also locally owned which we try and support first before a chain ..

Not many more BBQ joints further south than Down South BBQ between Foley and Gulf Shores. Down South BBQ has everything that meets the list of criteria for an one-stop-hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint. There is no dining room but there is an enclosed structure built with picnic tables underneath it. You walk-up and order at a window. The BBQ is superb and there is an unique dish you can't find anywhere else. My buddies and I came down to Foley to play disc golf and eat BBQ. After some research and viewing an unique entree, Down South was the winner. The unique entree I am talking about is the Cornbread Pork Sandwich. The sandwich is made with cornbread that looks like a pancake. You can choose regular or jalepeno cornbread. The sandwich comes with pulled pork, slaw, and tangy BBQ sauce on it. This sandwich is an epic, brilliant, masterpiece! It was worth more than the $9 I spent. As much as I love BBQ and I never know if I will have a chance to return since I live on the other side of Alabama, I had to have the rib plate too! The ribs were pretty good but a little tougher than my liking. The sandwich was soooo much better! There are several sides to choose from but I went with the horseradish potato salad and beans. The horseradish potato salad is made with red potatoes and you guessed it, creamy horseradish. I had never had another potato salad like it and I liked it more than the beans. The beans were ok but made with pork. Other sides include mustard potato salad, mac and cheese, and slaw. All sides are homemade. There are 5 sauces: tangy, sweet, hot, white Alabama sauce, and horsey sauce. This is not Arby's by the way. The tangy, sweet, and hot are all a tomato-vinegar base sauce. The one I enjoyed the most though was the white Alabama sauce. Their white Alabama sauce is made with horseradish. It is definitely an unique BBQ sauce. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Down South is a legit BBQ place. If you ever go here once, the cornbread pork sandwich is the must-have order.

Loved this place. When I found it on Google Maps, the maps said that it was "busier than usual". Apparently the algorithm was not working as when we drove up the place looked closed. It is literally a hole in the wall location, but decided to go up to the window and order. It was the smart move. There was a rare lull in business and so our food came out super fast. The food was so good. The best barbeque I have eaten in a long time. I LOVED the brisket. So good. The corn bread pancake that was used as the top and bottom of the sandwich was so good as well. Also the potato salad had horse radish in it. So unique and so good. As a special bonus, we had a local that ended up sitting next to us and talked our ears off about the many virtues of Gulf Shores. He was great and led us to many cool places there. I can't guarantee if you go to Down South that he will be there for you, but you can hope. As we left, the place was packed. We couldn't have timed it better. Go us! Go Down South Barbeque. Can't wait to get back to you.

It wasn't bad just not the best I've had. Brisket Sandwich - 8/10: Big PLUS for offering a "lean" version! Nice. The only thing I would say is that the sauce was a little soupy. I prefer a thick, tangy BBQ sauce... but that's just me. Overall a great cut of beef! Mac n Cheese balls - 10/10: I've had cheese balls before, but these were friggin' awesome. They put brisket in with them! The outer layer was perfectly crisp, delicious Mac n cheese inside... I probably should not have eaten all 4 but I couldn't stop! Dang those were good. Cheesy Cornbread - 10+/10: It goes KFC biscuits, Red Lobster biscuits and then blowing both of those out of the water are these bad boys! Let's just say I'm glad they only gave me two. If I would have known how awesome those were, I probably would have ONLY gotten a meal of only biscuits! The cornbread wasn't too sweet, the edges were crispy and chewy, cheese in the middle... dude... I was done after those. Epic. Service: Good service, no complaints. But I saw another post on here about the "you order at the front but then they bring food to you" feel. So you feel obligated to give a tip...? But they didn't take your order at your table. It's just one of those places that is in between a fast food and formal service. Regardless, they were still nice and professional. Shout out to Eric for suggesting the Mac n Cheese balls! What an epic name! Atmosphere: It's like a cabin-ish feel inside, kind of like other BBQ places. It would be really funny if there was a BBQ place that had like, I dunno, an Anime theme or something...? I mean, that's a bit off the wall, but I'm just Sayin (see what I did there?) that all BBQ joints have pretty much the same feel. Cozy enough and clean so that's a plus! Price: Middle of the road. Solid meal will run you 25$ plus tip. But obviously it gets pricy if you get different cuts or more meat. Still even those prices weren't horrible. Oh and also CRUSHED ICE!!! Overall: Just three words for this one. "I'll be back," A.Schwarenegger

The…read moreambiance seems very similar to exact between these two locations I've tried as would be expected with chain joints. The BBQ always seems to be inconsistent with sometimes good, sometimes disappointing but usually mediocre. I think Hog Wild Beach & BBQ in Gulf Shores is far better than this joint and I only end up at Jim 'N Nick's when I'm limited by time and have to do something quick when I'm in town. During my most recent visit they were out of unsweet iced tea and they never got it refilled during my visit. Another consistent issue I've had here is they never have given me a spoon when I've ordered the brisket chili so that has always left me either on the hunt for a spoon or trying to eat it with a fork (now for my last two visits they have actually given me a spoon). They sort of kind of have table service here as they deliver your food to your table and sometimes different staff walk past and ask how you are doing which in the past here after you got your food delivered you usually didn't see anybody at your table again. So they have improved a tad bit over the years that I've tried this spot. Given the choice and available time I'm always heading to Hog Wild Beach & BBQ in Gulf Shores for a far superior experience but sometimes I will be stuck with the mediocre experience at Jim 'N Nick's to take care of my BBQ addiction. Overall Jim 'N Nick's is OK while Hog Wild Beach & BBQ is fantastic. The absolute BEST BBQ in America is Gonzo's Smokehouse in Luling, LA.

Review: Even going during an off-peak time, Lambert's Cafe was completely packed--and it's easy to see why. The food here is great and incredibly plentiful. The catfish was excellent, and the iced tea was top-notch (plus, it comes served in a giant mug that I loved). The absolute highlight of the meal is the massive, fresh-baked "Throwed Rolls" being tossed across the room, alongside the servers walking around handing out generous extra portions of sides like fried okra. You definitely won't leave here hungry. Cons: The restaurant stays incredibly crowded and packed with people, even if you try to visit during off-times. Thumbs up / Thumbs down: Thumbs up! Can't go wrong with the fried chicken and other classics. However, as not being from around the area, I go for the atypical, non-mainstream classics (fried frog legs, fried beef liver, chicken liver, ....). The servers are amazing! Super friendly servers and roll throwers! Not sure about the lovely young gift shop attendant. Seems she could use some of the yummy baked sweet potato with brown sugar and butter to make her smile and be as friendly as the staff in the restaurant, to stop using her cell phone as I make a purchase with her not making eye contact or even saying as much as a 'hello' or 'thank you.'

On a recent boys day out I took a few of my Buds to check out this new addition for Arizona BBQ,…read moreyeah you read right, Arizona. Colt Grill BBQ & Spirits just opened in downtown Foley, AL, and I was curious to see how their smoked meats and Western vibe would fit in with our Southern scene. This place is a big deal for Foley, it's set up in the historic Foley Bakery building, a 100-year-old landmark that's been closed since 2007. The building, at the corner of North Alston Street and West Laurel Avenue, got a major facelift over the past year, and now it's home to this BBQ joint downstairs, with apartments and an office upstairs. Colt Grill started in Arizona, with four locations there, Prescott, Prescott Valley, Cottonwood, and Village of Oak Creek. Foley's their first venture outside Arizona, and they picked it because they loved the South's charm and Foley's small-town feel. Walking in, the place feels cozy yet upscale for a BBQ spot. The exposed brick walls and custom furniture, sourced from the owner's family of furniture builders, give it a warm, authentic vibe. Brenda Marie Clouston, the owner, has a background in interior design, and it shows. The setup is pretty unique for the area: you order at the counter, but there's a full-service bar where bartenders bring your food if you sit there. My buds and I grabbed a table, but the bar looked tempting with its lineup of bourbons and signature cocktails like the Foley Bushwacker and Colt Margarita but only one pal took advantage of the spirits. And they have happy hour :-) The menu's got all the BBQ classics, but it's not just ribs and brisket. They smoke nearly everything pork, chicken, turkey, even their mac-n-cheese over oak hardwoods. I went for the sampler platter to try a bit of everything that included baby back ribs with campfire sauce, pulled pork with Kansas City sauce, brisket, smoked turkey, and a turkey brat sausage. The meats were tender and packed with smoky flavor, and the variety of sauces let me mix it up. Classic sliced white bread was served with mine but we tried the jalapeño cornbread, which was a standout, spicy but not overwhelming. The guys got a brisket plate and a pulled pork sandwich. They liked it but I thought the brisket could have been a little moist and tender. Overall the food was good and I will return. Service was friendly, though it got a bit hectic during the lunch rush. The staff was hustling, and you could tell they're still finding their rhythm since opening in early this yesr. I liked that they give back to the community every "Cowboy Cookie" sold donates a portion to Secret Meals for Hungry Kids, a local charity. The atmosphere was lively and the Western decor made it feel like a little piece of Arizona in Alabama. Bottom line: Colt Grill's a great addition to Foley. It's not just another BBQ joint, it's got heart, history, and some seriously good food. My buds and I are already planning our next visit. If you're in the area, check it out and come hungry! For more about their story, here's a solid article: https://www.gulfcoastmedia.com/stories/colt-bbq-spirits-opening-soon-in-downtown-foley-in-historic-bakery-building,162695
