Best thing: The huge, famous "Throwed Rolls" and the unlimited pass-around sides, like the fried okra. Type of Food: Classic Southern-American comfort food. Review: Even going during an off-peak time, Lambert's Cafe was completely packed--and it's easy to see why. The food here is great and incredibly plentiful. The catfish was excellent, and the iced tea was top-notch (plus, it comes served in a giant mug that I loved). The absolute highlight of the meal is the massive, fresh-baked "Throwed Rolls" being tossed across the room, alongside the servers walking around handing out generous extra portions of sides like fried okra. Representing a Missouri established restaurant in my America 250 is Lambert's Cafe in Foley, AL. They started in southeastern Missouri in the early 1940's. They were always famous for the servers throwing the dinner rolls. Like my last review in Arkansas, I was moving across the country. I was only in Birmingham, AL for 11 months as the company had let go of pretty much all the 2010 hires. I decided to detour down to the Gulf Coast in Feb. 2011 moving back to Phoenix. I wanted to see Panama City, Destin, Pensacola, Gulf Shores, Mobile, & more. I decided to spend the night in Gulf Shores, AL. I was weighing dinner options looking on Yelp, etc., and I decided I was game to try Lambert's up the road in Foley as it sounded intriguing to me. It was cool seeing the servers throwing the rolls around. The rolls were delicious too. The entree I got was good as I recall, but it was nothing to write home about either. I remember it being filling. It's a good option for tourists in the Gulf Shores area to check out or the 2 locations in Missouri. read more

I want to give no stars.. but it won't let me. I was here in 1994. It was amazing!! The kinda of food and service you would brag about to people for your whole life. So after we moved away in 2021, to move to Reno, Nv. My family would bring bragging of this place w us! So when we moved back in 2023 we took my grandkids here and it was ok, but nothing like before. But times changed so the food was such a delight for them, never been to Resturant's with the free " share" food thing walking around w it. They bought two mugs and really liked it. So we recently came back for school shopping, and it was so AWFUL! Everyone was just rude! From the waitress aggregated cause my grandson was sick and only wanted sprite we payed for! ! He kept going to the bathroom! She kept watching to make sure he didn't eat!! A 10 year old!! But beside this noose hanging over or table- I guess it suppose to be a lasso but my kids started singing a song called the hanging tree!! I had no idea what that ment! GET RID OF IT!! It was disgusting!! The food was awful. Rolls were hard almost over cooked, we just ate the inside. The chicken and dumplings were soupy! And the flavor was awful- canned dumplings! the tomatoes and pasta goulash, was gummy cause the pasta dissolved in it! The chicken pot pie was nothing at all special than a 1.49 banquet pot pie from the freezer section. The only good was country friend steak. Mashed potatoes and cucumber and onions. Yea was yummy and best fried okra! My grand daughter who hates veggies, kept eating it! You were out of apple butter and didn't seem to care. Been out of it for weeks she said. I felt not important in the service. I think cause she thought we were trying to get free food for him. But he didn't like anything.. Oh and... I'm in a wheel chair. The handicap bathrooms- LOCK was broken!! People kept just walking in till my husband put my wheelchair to stop the door opening!! Told two people there, nobody cared! No, we will not be back. They don't care to fix problems and I'm sure if they get reported for invasion of privacy laws.. they'd get in trouble! We always have a fun family experience here at Lambert's! We stop here every time we visit this side of the country. The 'throwed rolls' is an experience in its own. (Is 'throwed' even a word? It sounds better than 'thrown rolls' or 'threw rolls,' perhaps?). The rolls are very good, specially with butter!! Yes, we come here for this unique experience. Can't go wrong with the fried chicken and other classics. However, as not being from around the area, I go for the atypical, non-mainstream classics (fried frog legs, fried beef liver, chicken liver, ....). The servers are amazing! Super friendly servers and roll throwers! Not sure about the lovely young gift shop attendant. Seems she could use some of the yummy baked sweet potato with brown sugar and butter to make her smile and be as friendly as the staff in the restaurant, to stop using her cell phone as I make a purchase with her not making eye contact or even saying as much as a 'hello' or 'thank you.' read more

I haven't been here in 28 years but absolutely needed to eat here when I came back to Foley. Random Thursday afternoon, but the parking lot was packed and there was about a 30-minute wait Well worth it for the fun atmosphere. Of course the tossed rolls are fun and tasty. The pass-arounds are also cool and the fried okra is my favorite. I ordered half a rack of ribs that were great. I ordered coleslaw which was average and mashed potatoes which I tried but didn't eat because they out gravy on them (didn't say that on the menu nor did the server mention). Every time we go to Foley, we always have to make a stop to Lambert. It is such a fun place to visit people of our ages. Really enjoy themselves attending Lambert. My kids always enjoy catching the rolls as they are being thrown in the air. The food is always good. I love the pass around in particular. The potato with onions is absolutely delicious. It takes me back to when my grandma would cook those fried potatoes. If you love okra you would definitely enjoy their fried okra pass around, no matter what you pick here you would always have a very large portion of a meal. I also recommend for a dessert option to get their cinnamon rolls. They also have had fried pies. Please keep in mind that sometimes there is a wait time especially doing travel seasons. Yeah, I know it's a tourist trap, but haven't been there in O'15 years or more. Was down here by my self, so why not? Louis was server, and extremely friendly and attentive. Place is buzzing but he was right on point. Food.... Ok, I've paid more for less. Food not the of the quality I remembered. But, what hasn't changed in 15+ years. If I remember the chicken fried steak back then was hand breaded. They're now converted to the Sysco style commercial available item. Not different than what you'd buy at Sam's. Whipped potatoes were definitely instant. The rolls were hot and fresh and as advertised served in a unique fashion. The "pass around" they bring to the table add to the uniqueness of eating there. Kind of a Cracker Barrel vibe with similar to slightly better food. Definitely a lot more going on in the dining room than Cracker Barrel. Tourist Trap, Definitely. Tourist Trap worth the experience? Yes. Not a place I'd eat every time I'm down here, but there are lots of places with worse food which you'll pay a lot more for. A place you should try at least once. 04/11/26 This was a fun experience. We arrived a little after 1:30pm on a Saturday and waited about 30 minutes for a table for 2. Our waiter Holden promptly greeted us and brought us drinks. He gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and we finally decided on country fried steak. A gentleman came around with fried okra before our meals came out and it was delicious. This was our first time trying okra and it did not disappoint. Our meals came out pretty quickly and we sat waiting to have rolls "throwed" at us. My husband spotted the roll thrower, put up his hand, and had a roll "throwed" at him that he ended up partially catching with his hand and his chest. I was slow raising my hamd and had to wait for my roll. Surprisingly, I caught the roll. It was soft, but heavy. We then waited for the girl to come around with the apple butter and molasses. We each got a scoop of apple butter and proceeded to enjoy our rolls. We also had the fried potatoes with onions which was the best side second only to the rolls themselves. The sides with our entree - french fries, corn bread, peaches- were okay, but I could do without them. The mashed potatoes and gravy were a good pairing with the country fried steak. The real winners were the "throwed" rolls, friend potatoes with onions, and the okra. Holden was wonderful and attentive. He provided a box to take my leftovers, offered us togo drinks even though all we ordered was water, and went back and got me togo silverware so I could enjoy my leftovers in the car. Honestly everything was great!! Very busy but got a table super fast for a table of 4. For was very flavourful and everyone in our party enjoyed the food. It's a bit loud but not distracting at all. The rolls.... We heard about the rolls that were thrown at you and had to experience for ourselves. We were NOT disappointed! We had an absolute blast here. We had to wait about 15mins for a table which was fine bc it was dinner time and it's a popular spot. We sat down and it wasn't 2 mins when the Famous rolls came out. The young man who threw them was super nice and I swear he should be in the MLB, he's got an arm on him I tell ya. Honey caught his roll with no issues. I caught mine straight in the chest and it exploded. It looked a little worse for the wear but BOY WAS IT GOOD!!!! Our server was super friendly and got everything out to us quickly. There were various servers with fried okra, macaroni and tomato's, black eyed peas, and other amazing sides. My only complaint was that they wouldn't serve me from the kids menu. I had a medical procedure that doesn't allow for me to eat much and the server said she wasn't allowed to serve me from that menu. Aside from that, everything else was amazing and we had a blast. Home of the "thrown rolls" I might add deliciously fresh from the oven thrown rolls - we came here while staying in a local RV Park, it started out more of a novelty and since we had made no plans for making dinner at the campground. The home cooking was also a draw and we found the food just okay honestly, the rolls and free sides being passed around by the staff was interesting our favorite besides the hot rolls was definitely the fried potatoes. The staff here was very friendly and accommodating after being seated without a wait. We were greeted table side and given menus and placed our beverages order the beverage are large I mean really large. After looking over all the food options we ordered a hamburger steak and liver and onion plate with sides, the food arrived fairly quickly and we were both amazed at the size of the portions (come hungry or definitely plan to share if you partake in the giant rolls and the never ending side dishes being passed around as well as the ginormous drinks or you may not have room for the entree's). It was any enjoyable experience with all the history, wall decor and our visit to the gift shop. The prices are reasonable considering as well as the entertainment interactions between the customers and staff. This is likely a one time visit for us being we aren't from the area. What a neat place. Be ready to get full and have fun. Such a unique place. They throw hot Hugh rolls around to people across the restaurant. Walk around with fried okra, Blackened peas, fried potatoes with onions, apple butter, sorghum and other stuff I'd imagine and if you want some they give it too you FREE. I thought that was just the coolest thing. It has its own atmosphere for sure. I got the chicken livers and cole slaw avd baked beans. They were out of onions and cucumbers darn it. Everything was very good--generous servings of classic Southern comfort food that left us full and satisfied. We visited as a party of seven and arrived expecting a typical busy-night experience. We put our name in and had about a 30-minute wait, which was completely reasonable. Unfortunately, that was the high point of the evening. When our table was ready, the hostess had us follow her, then abruptly stopped and sent us back to the hostess stand. We followed her again to a different table, got everyone settled, and then she returned with another party and informed us that we had been seated at the wrong table and needed to move. We were relocated to a rickety table beside the bathrooms. Once seated for the second time, we waited 10 minutes with no server, no menus, and no silverware. Various employees walked by offering pass-arounds of okra and rolls, but no one seemed responsible for our table. After another 10 minutes, one member of our party finally got up and retrieved menus for us. When our server eventually arrived to take drink orders, we mentioned that we still didn't have silverware. Someone later brought six sets of silverware--for a party of seven. We then waited another 10 minutes. Still no drinks. Still no silverware for the seventh guest. Still no butter, condiments, or anything to accompany the rolls that had been handed out. At that point, after 90 minutes from the time we arrived and without receiving a single drink or placing a food order, we made the decision to leave. I've eaten at plenty of busy restaurants and understand that mistakes happen. What was frustrating was the complete lack of organization, communication, and urgency from start to finish. Being seated at the wrong table was unfortunate. Waiting an hour after being seated without drinks or basic table service was unacceptable. We left hungry, frustrated, and genuinely shocked that a restaurant could be operating this chaotically. It was one of the worst dining experiences our family has ever had. read more

My husband loves this place. For me, not a good place for vegetarians but I knew that going in and was being a good sport. He got the pork jowls (similar to bacon) with two sides of your choice. He got sweet potato with brown sugar (enjoyed) and turnip greens (not his fav). I had a side salad since I was due for some vegetables while road tripping but they do have fried okra and potatoes with onions that are safe for vegetarians apparently. The Food was delicious. The decor is wonderful, old South, grandma's kitchen. There was a long line to check in, but they set us at a table as soon as we got to the front of the line. I'm only giving them a 3 star rating because the service was so bad. Every employee we interacted with had a frown on their face. I expected a warm, friendly greeting. My husband and I like to come after a day at the beach. There can be a long line and our wait was about 20 minutes. These lines used to be for Cracker Barrel but they are now here!! Food comes out quick and before the at they have folks walking around with they call, "pass arounds". This can be friend okra, potatoes and onions or the best, their thrower yeasty hot rolls. I've been in Alabama since Friday and this was the first place that had amazing coleslaw!!! I was so excited. The bread rolls are dangerously good! Had the ribs (amazing!!) and a baked sweet potato. All the food was yummy. It's been more than seven hours and I'm still not hungry! The ambiance is adorable but kinda loud and can be a bit overstimulating/overwhelming for some littles. "Home of the throwed rolls!" And yes, they will throw them to you! Feast for the eyes and the tummy! Everything about this place is generous! I have been here twice and it's a fun place to fill up! The rolls are never-ending as are the Pass Arounds (sides). There's a ton of things to look at here. Decorated to the hilt with all sorts of memorabilia! Old license plates adorn the walls along with photos. You'll see Clint Eastwood and JFK. There's also a vintage stove and information about the Lamberts. The only thing I don't like is that they do not provide a plate for anything that you'd use a plate for before your actual food arrives. They have rolls of paper towels on the tables. You are supposed to use some for your rolls. I also had them drop some okra onto my paper towels because I couldn't wait! They come around with Sorghum and Apple Butter which they will dollop onto your roll. The Sorghum will pretty much run off because it is like a thick syrup. A little too messy to be controlled with a paper towel. I chose the Apple Butter. The Pass Arounds. Staff will bring them around during your meal. It's like free "Add-On" sides. The Pass Arounds are Hot Rolls, Sorghum, Apple Butter, Fried Okra, Macaroni & Tomatoes, Fried Potatoes & Onions, and Black-Eyed Peas. Once your plate of food arrives, you can make room on your plate for these tasty extras! I don't recall what I ordered in 2016, but do remember it was a good place to eat. This last visit in Jan. of 2025, I got the Fish Dinner with Baked Sweet Potato & Turnip Greens ($22.50). I tried the Pass Arounds: Black-Eyed Peas, Macaroni & Tomatoes, and Fried Okra. The Fried Okra was the best, it was served piping hot! Everything was so delicious! I ordered a Sweet Tea and it came in an enormous mug! I didn't need a refill. After you've finished eating, you can head out to their little store. I enjoyed browsing. Out in front of it is a map with pins marking where people have visited from. Such a unique dining experience. There was a huge line of people waiting, but our wait was only 45 minutes. People got moved through pretty quickly. Our server was attentive and friendly. Sides came by constantly. Fresh rolls came out one after the other and were tossed across the room. I ordered the chicken pot pie , but honestly, my favorite item was some potatoes and onions that were brought around. Took the family to Lambert's the other night, had a good experience. The thrown roll were of course excellent especially with a glob of apple butter on top. Anyway, my meatloaf was good but could have used a little more topping but still very good. One of my sons got chicken and dumplings, he stated that there wasn't much chicken in the dish. My other son devoured his sour kraut and sausage. In my opinion you go to Lambert's for the family fun and entertainment, kids loved it! The food is good, not the best.
