Southern food includes Meat-and-Three restaurants, barbeque, fried ANYthing, fresh caught fish, and…read morehunted game. Hominy, hush puppies, cornbread, grits, Alabama white sauce on any meat, especially smoked chicken, are all popular in Alabama. BBQ is practically a religion in the South! As former certified Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) certified judges, my husband and I completed the training and paid the fees to be certified. The "KCBS way" is different from a lot of people's preferences in that, for example, a BBQ rib should actually have some "pull" to it, meaning, when you bite into it, your mouth should leave a mark in the rib. This means "fall off the bones" ribs are not KDBS quality, despite how many love that rib consistency. The KCBS judges slots fill up so quickly and required us to travel at our own cost and we did not judge any KCBS events. Back to Southern food. Deep fried double Oreos are one of the many fried foods here in Huntsville, and Melt restaurant features them on their menu. Meat-and-Three restaurants feature a meat (usually fried pork chop, meatloaf, BBQ, fried catfish, country fried steak/chicken) and three sides (fried okra, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked potato, potato salad, cole slaw, French fries) and bread options such as cornbread, rolls, hush puppies. While Southern Cooking is absolutely delicious, I have to limit it because lets face it, it is high in calories and cholesterol. When I do indulge, it's shrimp and grits, pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, and fried whole okra.

We had to wait about 15mins for a table which was fine bc it was dinner time and it's a popular spot. We sat down and it wasn't 2 mins when the Famous rolls came out. The young man who threw them was super nice and I swear he should be in the MLB, he's got an arm on him I tell ya. Honey caught his roll with no issues. I caught mine straight in the chest and it exploded. It looked a little worse for the wear but BOY WAS IT GOOD!!!! Our server was super friendly and got everything out to us quickly. There were various servers with fried okra, macaroni and tomato's, black eyed peas, and other amazing sides. My only complaint was that they wouldn't serve me from the kids menu. I had a medical procedure that doesn't allow for me to eat much and the server said she wasn't allowed to serve me from that menu. Aside from that, everything else was amazing and we had a blast. We loved it!!!

He gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and we finally decided on country fried steak. A gentleman came around with fried okra before our meals came out and it was delicious. This was our first time trying okra and it did not disappoint. Our meals came out pretty quickly and we sat waiting to have rolls "throwed" at us. My husband spotted the roll thrower, put up his hand, and had a roll "throwed" at him that he ended up partially catching with his hand and his chest. I was slow raising my hamd and had to wait for my roll. Surprisingly, I caught the roll. It was soft, but heavy. We then waited for the girl to come around with the apple butter and molasses. We each got a scoop of apple butter and proceeded to enjoy our rolls. We also had the fried potatoes with onions which was the best side second only to the rolls themselves. The sides with our entree - french fries, corn bread, peaches- were okay, but I could do without them. The mashed potatoes and gravy were a good pairing with the country fried steak. The real winners were the "throwed" rolls, friend potatoes with onions, and the okra. Holden was wonderful and attentive. He provided a box to take my leftovers, offered us togo drinks even though all we ordered was water, and went back and got me togo silverware so I could enjoy my leftovers in the car. I don't know if we would go out of our way to return, but it was a fun experience and we enjoyed most of what we ordered.

I forgot, when we walked in the door, immediately a guy asked what we wanted to drink, and served up a well needed double bloody Mary. Short on bloody, lol. He offered to add more mix but my hubby was very happy with it as it was. If you love animals, and animal photos, paintings, etc, this place is a treat. The walls are lined with photos and pics of some very well loved fur kids. The mural inside was whimsical and fun to look at on our VERY short wait for food. Ok, food. I love fried green tomatoes. Never had it with a Benedict before but I loved it. Hubby had beef tips, squash casserole and onion petals. All delightful. This is good comfort food, well appreciated after a 10 hour drive the night before. Give em a try, especially the bloody mary!

One interesting thing is that while it is all you can eat, they serve it cafeteria style. So you tell them what you want and they put it on the plate. This must have changed since COVID. You used to be able to serve yourself. The food is good, but it taste like someone is cooking scared. Nothing had any seasoning. Nothing popped with flavor. No smoke on the pulled pork (I got outside meat to be able to taste it) Bland spaghetti, bland chicken and dumplings, bland greens, bland, bland, bland - except for the fried chicken and fried fish which were okay, compared to the rest. Service was not overly friendly, or even friendly either. Pretty much here's your seat, here's your drink. I would probably come back one more time. Definitely will not come back if the next time is like this time. 2 1-2 stars is what I would give it. Rounding up to 3 in memory of a place that used to be a lot better.

ATMOSPHERE Nothing too special about the atmosphere here. I just love that. It was nice clean open area with large windows and plenty of seating and easy to get around. The bar area look cool and the layout was nice. FOOD this is why you came here, right! All kinds of fish cooked all kinds of different ways. Delicious gumbo. Love that pimento cheese ball appetizer with that blueberry pepper jelly! For lunch, I had the meat and three. It was all good, especially the collard greens. SERVICE THIS WAS MAYBE SOME OF THE BEST SERVICE I HAD THE WHOLE TIME I WAS IN ORANGE BEACH THIS WEEKEND. OUR SERVER WAS SO AMAZING. I HATE THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER HER NAME, BUT SHE WAS ON TOP OF IT AND SUPER DELIGHTFUL. DRINKS The bar area looked really nice. Most of my table had iced tea which everybody enjoyed. I also got a beer from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I was very impressed by their beer selection and they are a verified venue on the Untappd app so you can go to that app to look at all the beer selection and even filter and sort the beers so that you can have an easier time selecting the proper beverage. It even came out in a glass that matched the beer that I had! I like that extra touch.

They had a meat and three sides which is a southern thing. I chose the fresh catch. with side salad, boiled red potatoes, and greens. I had asked the server for the salad first. But it was brought with the meal. The salad was fresh and crisp, with a surprise of a small Peppa dew pepper. Blazing red with a little heat and delicious. Haven't seen them in a restaurant ever. Unfortunately my fish and potatoes were cold, cold and butter congealed. The greens were warm and good I had also ordered the cornbread. It was refreshing to see that it wasn't the usual cake like kind, plus not the ultra sweet kind either. More bread like with a hint of sweetness. Delicious. The fish and potatoes had a nice flavor but unfortunately the cold food spoiled the experience. Since I was a guest of my sister I didn't say anything about the cold food. What a disappointment. Maybe when I return things will be better.

The one thing I didn't like was the new tabletops. They are comprised of a series of small boards spaced about 1/4 inch apart so if anything gets spilled it goes right through.
