On a recent boys day out I took a few of my Buds to check out this new addition for Arizona BBQ, yeah you read right, Arizona. Colt Grill BBQ & Spirits just opened in downtown Foley, AL, and I was curious to see how their smoked meats and Western vibe would fit in with our Southern scene. This place is a big deal for Foley, it's set up in the historic Foley Bakery building, a 100-year-old landmark that's been closed since 2007. The building, at the corner of North Alston Street and West Laurel Avenue, got a major facelift over the past year, and now it's home to this BBQ joint downstairs, with apartments and an office upstairs. Colt Grill started in Arizona, with four locations there, Prescott, Prescott Valley, Cottonwood, and Village of Oak Creek. Foley's their first venture outside Arizona, and they picked it because they loved the South's charm and Foley's small-town feel. Walking in, the place feels cozy yet upscale for a BBQ spot. The exposed brick walls and custom furniture, sourced from the owner's family of furniture builders, give it a warm, authentic vibe. Brenda Marie Clouston, the owner, has a background in interior design, and it shows. The setup is pretty unique for the area: you order at the counter, but there's a full-service bar where bartenders bring your food if you sit there. My buds and I grabbed a table, but the bar looked tempting with its lineup of bourbons and signature cocktails like the Foley Bushwacker and Colt Margarita but only one pal took advantage of the spirits. And they have happy hour :-) The menu's got all the BBQ classics, but it's not just ribs and brisket. They smoke nearly everything pork, chicken, turkey, even their mac-n-cheese over oak hardwoods. I went for the sampler platter to try a bit of everything that included baby back ribs with campfire sauce, pulled pork with Kansas City sauce, brisket, smoked turkey, and a turkey brat sausage. The meats were tender and packed with smoky flavor, and the variety of sauces let me mix it up. Classic sliced white bread was served with mine but we tried the jalapeño cornbread, which was a standout, spicy but not overwhelming. The guys got a brisket plate and a pulled pork sandwich. They liked it but I thought the brisket could have been a little moist and tender. Overall the food was good and I will return. Service was friendly, though it got a bit hectic during the lunch rush. The staff was hustling, and you could tell they're still finding their rhythm since opening in early this yesr. I liked that they give back to the community every "Cowboy Cookie" sold donates a portion to Secret Meals for Hungry Kids, a local charity. The atmosphere was lively and the Western decor made it feel like a little piece of Arizona in Alabama. Bottom line: Colt Grill's a great addition to Foley. We were given a gift card for here from a neighbor, since we were new to the area. Went with no expectations at 5 pm on a Sunday. We liked the "no service" service. It wasn't too overly crowded and we ordered from the bar (Billy is amazing ) and they actually supplied us "service"(brought out food and drinks to our table ) LOL. Ribs, Cod Taco's, with smoked mac'n'cheese, sweet potato fries and two mixed drinks was about $80. A little pricey, but it was very, very good! The western decor was super inviting. We have been enjoying just stopping in for lunch at places that look good when we drive by. This was another fun experience. We stopped in for lunch and really enjoyed the food. I had a Cajun burger that was really tasty. My partner tried the Verde bowl with an add-on of brisket. The brisket had to be handled with care as it was fall apart tender. Really tasty. Wow, overall experience was horrible. The pulled pork tastes like mush. The supposedly clean plates were gross dirty. I mean disgusting. The baby back ribs and brisket had great texture but zero flavor. You might as well bring some wet shredded paper and put sauce on it. Lots of sauce options so if you don't want to taste the meat and just pour sauce on the stuff, this may be a place for you. The smoked half chicken was okay at best. We went Saturday. It wasn't our destination but we passed by and decided to try it out. On one hand, many complain about self service (me not really something to complain about) when we walked in, we were greeted and given our option of a self service dining or full service at the bar. We chose the bar. Alex, our bartender/server/conversation maker was polite, friendly and welcoming. We ordered drinks and food. Enjoyed the atmosphere and company. They've done a really nice job fixing the place up. I had the meat sampler. I liked the ribs, pulled pork and sausage. The turkey was amazing. The brisket was good. Nothing wrong with it. Just needed a little more flavor IMO. I'd still order it again. My forever date had the 1/2 chicken, sides and an order of sweet potato fries. We enjoyed it all. I didn't mind getting up to get my own BBQ sauce. There were several to choose from and all were good. I liked the Carolina and the habanero sauces most. I have no problem not tipping if I don't get served. We appreciated the full set or at the bar and the drinks were great. I can recommend the huckleberry and the mule. And the strawberry margarita. Colt Grill BBQ & Spirits is a new BBQ joint in downtown Foley, Alabama which is part of a small chain based out of Arizona where they have three locations. I sampled their BBQ brisket and a burger. The burger was alright but it didn't come with a side. The brisket was also alright but it doesn't compete with the local area's best BBQ joint which is Hog Wild Beach & BBQ in Gulf Shores which has better brisket! The price difference between the brisket and the burger at Colt Grill was so small that I found the brisket to be a far better deal so I would stick with that instead of ever getting the burger again. There are just simply a lot of better burgers in the area so no need to eat a simply alright burger here when the brisket is a superior choice. Colt Grill does have an impressive selection of BBQ sauces but sadly they were out of some of them during my visits. They do have a nice bar inside and they have done a nice job of creating a cool ambiance here. The service was alright but a tad slow on refiling my iced tea. Overall if you don't want to deal with the beach traffic to head down to Hog Wild Beach & BBQ then Colt Grill can give you a decent BBQ fix in downtown Foley. read more

Great food and big portions! I had the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, and it was fabulous! They had a lot of BBQ sauces to choose from. I had the Smoked Whiskey brownie, which wasn't my favorite. The brownie was more of a cake. You order when you come in and they call your number/name and you can either go and get your food OR someone will bring it to you. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was amazing--great ambiance, tons of hot sauce options, a well-stocked bar, and genuinely friendly staff who made us feel right at home. I had the smoked turkey sandwich and it was phenomenal--super flavorful and cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the Philly brisket cheesesteak with a side of garlic fries (small upcharge, totally worth it). He's the type who cringes at spending $20 on a sandwich, but even he said, "That was the best $20 I've ever spent." And I have to admit--he wasn't wrong. My pulled pork sandwich was just great. 11/2 -2 inches thick, all the way across the bun with meat. Many different sauces for your meat. The macaroni and cheese is smoky but outstanding. The restaurant is black and white cow hide real cute. Service that is why it only got a four stars instead of six stars. Go in they point you to a table, you take a menu. When you decide what you want you go to the cashier and order; when it's ready your name or table is called you go get food, make your drink and get your silverware. We're staying at a nearby RV resort and received an invite from other campers to join a social gathering for breakfast at Colt. The group was seated at a large wraparound bar with ample space and very comfortable seating. Yes, we met some new friends but, we had a great breakfast and Service was first rate. One thing about Colt Grill BBQ & Spirits is that most meals, if not all, are prepared with a touch of grill smoke. This is not something that is overdone, however, it adds a delicate touch that reminds you throughout your meal that you are experiencing something quite different. The interior of the restaurant is tastefully done, reflecting the nature of the menu and contemporary southwestern Americana. As expected, the Hoagie was very messy and unfortunately it was served on a paper based basket. Knowing that someone will most likely need to cut and eat this with a fork at least partially made it seem very low end to have it served this way. With the juices and sauce dripping from the Hoagie the paper became saturated and started falling apart. The onions and peppers were grilled perfectly and had a great flavor. The chipotle sauce had a smokey flavor. Unfortunately, the Housemade Turkey Sausage had no flavor and was very dry. If they call this a medium heat, I need to order XXX hot because it was mild at best. I asked for extra crisply fries. They came out hot and almost crispy, but were good enough. The Hoagie was fairly inexpensive $12, but when I received my check, I was very surprised to see a charge of $5.75 for fries. It was a generous amount of fries, but the way I was asked if I wanted them, I thought they were included with the price. Bottom Line: We enjoyed the service and the comfortable environment. We did not enjoy the food flavor. If you want full service, sit at the bar. I spoke with several other people while there and they were raving on the BBQ. Food was excellent and the girls taking the orders and payments were very nice and helpful. Restaurant looks amazing, and I'm very glad we have this place in downtown Foley. I know they're still learning and working out the kinks. I got the Jalapeño burger, and did pay $2.00 to add bacon, however when I got home, I realized there was no bacon. Not a big deal, just thought they would want to know to make sure it doesn't keep happening. There was a slight mixup with my order as I paid for someone else's order (which was less expensive). But they fixed it right away. All in all, I'd still rate it a 10 out of 10, and my only recommendation to them would be to buy their paper and janitorial products from the ONLY restaurant supply company in Foley, Baldwin Janitorial & Paper. As a handicapped person using a walker, I could not handle all this. I asked a server for help but she spoke no English. If you are handicapped, make sure you take a friend, spouse or servant... Friendly greeter announced I could choose my seating and then, expectations started to diminish as I was instructed to make my selection at the bar as everything was self-service. Ok, I see other places follow this model. Not my favorite personally as I like to tip a "server" vs pay a tip just because there's a tip line. Ordered the daily lunch special. Paid at the bar and provided cutlery, drink, and napkin. Instructed where to pick up food and get sauces. Portion was ample however quality missed the mark. Best part of the sandwich was the pickle. Colt Grill has become one of our favorite places! The food is always incredible, the inside is nicely decorated, and the service is consistently great. We love the smoked turkey club with a side of Colt sauce and the brisket with sweet potato fries. I have a gluten sensitivity and I really appreciate all of their gluten free options. We love the happy hour specials and the Sauce bar which I believe has seven different BBQ sauces along with mustard and ketchup! Service at the bar is the only place you can really get table service!
