Don't let the building fool you, this place is Exactly what you want from a bbq joint. Get the Jalapeño cornbread sandwich and don't look back. The service was amazing and you can tell the people behind the counter know what they have is worth eating. We ate out back and threw the baseball while we waited for the food. The owner even came out and threw with my boys. We will definitely be back. Maybe even tomorrow...... read more

OMG! What this place lacks in "fine dining experience," it adds to just plain old GOOD! Two of us split a jalapeño cornbread sandwich with brisket (and coleslaw) and it was plenty of food and WOW! Good! A good somewhat sweet cornbread pancake enveloped tasty brisket and perfectly chopped coleslaw. We actually drove north of town about five miles out of the way. It was worth it. This is a DON'T MISS IT meal when in Gulf Shores. read more

What can I say that has not already been said. It is my first time here I got the BBQ pork sandwich with BBQ beans and potato salad on the side. Both sides were delicious and the pork was so tender. Plenty of screened seating with fans blowing a nice breeze. Employees are very nice and I will definitely be back to try the brisket. read more

Down South Barbeque - BBQ pork sandwich with a side of BBQ beans, potato salad and of course an Arnold Palmer to drink - Barbeque Near Me - Foley, Alabama

Great bbq we liked the brisket best. Didn't give it a 5 star as prices were a little high.

This place is inconvenient. Food is good but this place is never open that much. Then don't except credit or debit my have cash or check. Really who carries cash that often. Get up with the times! Also if you talk with the owners about any of this their response is "You don't have to eat here!" or " It's our business we will open when we want!" To me this isn't good customer relations. I live next door to this place and it's rarely open. When the do closes it not just one or two days it's sometimes weeks. I don't recommend this place. read more

Fantastic food! The cornbread sandwich is a must try. BBQ , slaw, sauce on a cornbread bun. Staff is super friendly. Banana pudding is delicious, creamy and served ice cold. Huge portions. They only take cash. The only negative was outside seating only with no restroom making it toasty sitting outside in the July heat. Highly recommend must try. read more

Stopped to pick up lunch today. My wife had the wing dinner she had the wings with mild sauce ,slaw and horseradish potato salad. First the wings were meaty good season and taste sauce ,slaw was creamy and not over dressed. The potato salad had a good horseradish flavor without being overwhelming . This was a first time tasting potato salad like that but will not be my last . I had sausage with peppers an onions a good amount of well seasoned and smoked sausage. I also had a side of baked beans. They had pieces of smoked pulled pork and onions a very good balance of flavors We will be back to try the cornbread sandwich they use cornbread batter to made a bun?? For serenaded smoked pork. The sweet tea was super To sum it up. Food very good and all homemade Service very friendly and helpful Dining. Is picnic table in screened area. Will we go back most definitely Food was very good read more

I get being frustrated with the recent hurricane however to not allow the very hard working line workers of utility companies to park there until you have power is quite selfish. Especially when all they are trying to do is help the community to ensure they have power. I hope you never open again. read more

Holy smoke! I'm a Memphis girl and if there's one thing I know well, it's BBQ. We joke that my husband only married me for my grill and I only married him because he's the best pitmaster I've ever known. Finding good BBQ here is about as easy as finding fresh caught seafood in Memphis. This place quickly went to the top of the three really good places we've found. Pulled pork is important. Theirs is great! The smoke flavor is just right, but what makes it even better is that they have an option to order it on hoe cakes instead of buns. That's a first for me. I kind of expected something like an arepa, but it wasn't. You don't even have to ask for slaw on it. They just know BBQ sandwiches are supposed to have slaw and sauce on them. The sandwiches are huge too! The true test though was the ribs. Theirs are perfect - perfectly tender, perfect smoke ring, perfect flavor - perfect! They don't just assume you want sauce on them. That comes on the side for those of us who prefer to just taste the smoke and meat. They didn't use dry rub, which I prefer, but they were still spot on. For my side, I ordered mac and cheese. It was okay. It was definitely homemade. My hubs had baked beans. He said they were good. He and my sister-in-law had the jalapeño hoe cake bbq sandwiches. For dessert, I had some made-from-scratch banana pudding and my SIL had some delicious peach cobbler. The food was very impressive, and it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to BBQ. This is a little place where you park, walk up to a window and order your food and wait on them to call your number. Then you take your food to a little screened-in area with picnic tables and eat. There's no sit-down area with air conditioning, so if you're not used to this heat and humidity, you might want to find a cool place to sit and enjoy your meal. I love the summer heat so it works for me. We had 3 sandwiches, a half slab of spare ribs, 2 sides, 2 desserts, and 3 drinks for about $60. There was so much food we had half of it left over. Not bad for the quality and quantity of the food. read more

WOW, hhhmmmm let me say it again, WOW! yep it sounds better the second time. This little shack behind a Shell station, can put out some meat, very tasty meat and I found that I wanted it all. Down South has got it down pat from Brisket to Ribs. Today I got a large beef sandwich, cause small is for punks! I also got my beef sandwich all the way except for cheese and that may have been a mistake, cause cheese may have added a little more zing, but I doubt it. The BBQ sauce that came with the beef sandwich really complemented it well, it wasn't spicy, even though I prefer spicy, I didn't miss it a bit. Service, well you walk up to the window and order, but tip the gals anyway, cause they sure were nice. Ambiance, none at all, so I hope you have an active imagination. This is just a shack with a tent, where you can eat at, but I'd get it to go. I'm really looking forward to stuffing some brisket in my mouth, as the beef sandwich was excellent, actually more then excellent! Go there, or DIE! Now your cursed so you gotta go! read more

I usually wait until I'm home and relaxing before I write my reviews. Today I am writing while still full as a tick. Good Lord my lunch was good! I will start with the fact that I'm a BBQ snob since I used pork ribs as a teething ring. You could say I was raised on the stuff. This is a shed turned restaurant. No wait staff... Walk up to the window, order what you want, wait for your number to be called, and prepare yourself for some wonder grub. They do have seating... All picnic tables with several under a covered and screened in sandpit. I had the cornbread pancake sandwich. I'm not sure I will ever try anything else. It was the perfect combination of fried cornbread used as a bun for BBQ. And yes there is slaw on it. The sauce is mild but perfectly married the flavors. My boyfriend had a side of baked beans. They were loaded with meat. All I can say is wow. Time for my food coma. read more

Food was great! Make sure to bring cash because they do not accept cards. Pork plate with baked beans and Mac and cheese highly recommended.

The Cornbread sandwich is like heaven on a plate, absolutely delicious!!!! I couldn't eat but half of it, which made my husband happy because he got to eat the other half. My husband ordered the brisket plate with coleslaw and baked beans and it was good as well. Definitely a new local favorite spot, especially since it's 2 minutes from my house! read more

Be aware, you need to bring cash. Fantastic place to get some good southern barbecue. They have all of the standards brisket/pulled pork/ chicken and you have some good options for how you would like to eat that mean (e.g. as a plate... sandwich). I had a pulled pork plate with baked beans and mustard potato salad, and a piece of toasted bread. I received a BIG takeout container FULL of food. The sauce is good too. There is no inside seating, but you can sit in a screned in picnic area with fans if you'd like to stay for your meal. read more

A very rustic down South BBQ spot where the finest BBQ can be found. What started as a hole in the wall quickly became a huge local favorite! We "occasionally" clue in visitors. as I said a rural spot, with a few picnic tables in an enclosed, screened off area. Most of their business come from the take away group. Along with buying dinners for the entire family, we delight our Dog Show Friends buy frequently buying it by the pound. We Dog Show in a 17 state range, no matter the location people beg to come to our rig BBQ parties. They also serve old fashioned sides. The green and baked beans are total winners and IMHO they make some mighty fine mustard potato salad! The wait times are pretty brief and well worth it. Whether you are picking up a quick meal for the family or taking it to the beach, it's a real treat you shouldn't miss. read more

First I am BBQ lover so my review is of the whole place. I ABSOLUTLEY loved the SOB and my wife had the cornbread sandwich... I recommend that for anyone who wants sweet and smokey. Chris was nice enough to take me to his pit and explain his processes. True BBQ master. & Mama makes the desserts, I recommend the banana pudding. Five stars for BBQ lovers. read more

Wow great BBQ! I had the BBQ pork sandwich. Tender and juicy. Just enough BBQ sauce with extra sauce if you want to add. The BBQ sauce is awesome. Not too sweet or too spicy just right. The BBQ chicken is the best I have ever had. The beans are good. The potato salad with horseradish is awesome, creamy yet a little spice. Walk up window, cash only and cute little outside area to eat. Very reasonable prices. I would make this a regular if I lived in this area! read more

Best BBQ around! The BBQ baked potato is definitely worth a try. It's the only thing I ever order anymore.

Very good BBQ. The sides are tasty as well. Staff is friendly and responsive. Dining room is nice.

We were staying for a week's vacation just down CR10 from this establishment. I saw some reviews on Yelp about how good this BBQ was and I had to swing b and give it a try. I love to cook BBQ myself on my BGE so I am a bit of a BBQ snob/aficionado. We ordered the cornbread (jalapeño for extra heat) sandwich to go and it was amazing. It was such a large portion, my wife and I shared it. I also got a side of 1/2 pound pulled smoked chicken and it was excellent as well. Two days later, I got hungry for their BBQ and dropped by again and ordered the same sandwich and a side of their baked beans. I will definitely mark this place on my GPS. It's easy to get to right off of Highway 59 and CR-10intersection just south of Foley, AL. Cash/check only, but it is so worth that minor inconvenience. read more

Fabulous! Just Fabulous!!! Dont expect an inside dining room or cocktails, but they do have an outdoor screened in seating area. Just good old fashioned BBQ, with southern hospitality... I had the SOB sandwich, pulled bbq pork, vinegar coleslaw and purple onions in a texas toast sandwich.... Yum! The bbq sauce was delicious without being yucky sweet....OMG! Prices are fabulous too....they smoke on site with pecan wood. read more

The flavor is incredible. The chopped brisket was my favorite, I thought it had better flavor that the regular brisket, but both are solid choices, as is everything else on the menu. The only remotely negative thing I can say is that the sausage was the lowest performer with our crew, with a few links left over while everything else was practically licked clean. Regardless, if you like BBQ, you can't go wrong with Down South. read more

Excellent! If you are thinking about checking this place out, do it. You won't be disappointed. Ordered cornbread sandwiches and a brisket sandwich. Both were very, very good. Would definitely come back again. read more

Best BBQ you will find in Gulf Shores Alabama! Very friendly staff with a great tasting menu bottom to top! Our favourite barbeque in South Baldwin. We never miss a chance to go when we visit. Its a humble little outpost behind a gas-station w/ modest seating...but is that how most great BarBQ is served? They really load up the bbq sandwiches w/ meat. Great sauce too. Love the sides as well. read more

Always great food and friendly people. If you haven't eaten here you just missed some of the best barbeque you'll ever eat. Thanks guys!

Nasty Nasty Nasty. I have traveled to 34 states in the US,and hands down Alabama has had the worst bbq ever. This company uses pecan wood which leaves a strong burnt wood taste on the food... My family thought that it was poisoned... yuck me thinks not...never again! read more

The best barbecue I have ever had! I absolutely love Down South. The barbecue is out of this world amazing. I always get a small pork sandwich, a sweet tea, and either the cobbler or the banana pudding. The sandwich might be "small", buts it's a lot of barbecue and always fills me up. The sweet tea is always fresh and the perfect amount of sweetness. I love all of the cobbler flavours, and the banana pudding is so good. The building is adorable also, there are cute little pigs everywhere and the side of the building is painted with adorable pictures of pigs. The outdoor seating is also really nice, the fans keep it cool and the screens keep all the bugs out. It's cash or checks only, so make sure you are prepared (or just visit the ATM in the gas station next to them). read more

Was down in Foley for work, and stopped into Down South BBQ after reading the reviews here. Boy were they spot on! I'm a BBQ freak, and this was as good as I've ever had. Got the pulled pork sandwich on jalepeno cornboard. Huge and delicious. I like that the sauce is on the side. Perfect blend of sweetness and tart from the vinegar. Pork was perfectly smoked. Tender and smokey, but not overdone. Slaw on the sandwich is always a good touch. I will be back on my next trip to Foley!! read more

My first of many restaurant jobs was at a BBQ restaurant. Therefore, I am very picky and very critical when it comes to barbecue. With that being said, this was the best barbecue I have had since I moved down here! The flavor was excellently smoky and savory. The menu has a wide variety of options for whatever kind of barbecue you may be craving, loaded baked potato, BBQ salad, pork, ribs, chicken, brisket, you name it! All of their sides are excellent as well. You really can't go wrong with any choice from their menu. Also, the value for your dollar is well worth it. It's less expensive than most eateries around here and you can guarantee you will be full! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking good BBQ or a good filling meal, in a laid back environment. You won't be disappointed! read more

Yeah, I'm a New Yorker and maybe I won't get any respect writing a review on BBQ. I'm not an expert on all regions of BBQ. I am very familiar with Memphis BBQ, and what ever joint in NYC (yeah no real street cred). The brisket and ribs are great! Perfectly cooked, doesn't take an expert to know that. The BBQ sauce was nice--tangy with a small kick, not too sweet. Meat is smoked with pecan wood. The meat is not overly spiced, just perfectly cooked, smoked and seasoned meat. read more

The pulled pork was perfect. The ribs fell off the bones. My daddy said the slaw was just as tasty as his momma's (don't tell her). The beans weren't quite as good as my momma's, but they were pretty damn great. We're quickly establishing this area as our yearly vacation spot, and I'm pretty confident that this'll make it into the tradition. TL:DR: yum yum. Eat here. read more
