We hired Earthcare Landscaping to install a design in our backyard in August 2015. This included…read moreleveling and amending the soil, installing drip irrigation throughout including for California native plants and a small blue fescue lawn, installing a small paver area, and refinishing our deck. Our plant irrigation has held up well, though most of the plants did not survive and we ended up replacing them ourselves with other plants. As I recall they were polite, punctual, and generally responsive. We had two major problems. Since the install three years ago, about 1/4 of our lawn has dies each year--slowly spreading from one side of the lawn to the other. Recently, we discovered the lawn with bubbling puddles of water in 4-5 places, and bone dry in others. The underground irrigation here is a total failure and unrecoverable, and so we have turned off the water there totally. As soon as we did, our water bill dropped dramatically. I am including pictures of the puddles. Additionally, at the time of our original service they claimed that they had someone experienced in refinishing decks. The final product was a mess, with uneven stain application, spattering, and poorly prepared wood. They agreed to reimburse us to hire someone else, which we appreciated. The painting company we hired was absolutely shocked at how our deck was done by Earthcare. It was a big effort for the company we hired to first undo, and then redo, the work that had been done by Earthcare. We would not hire Earthcare Landscaping again nor would we recommend them to friends.

Sam, Campbell Landscape, was all that and more. And although he was not the least expensive, I truly believe that the marginal difference in cost far out weighed the headache and grief we surely would have realized with a lesser contractor. Like any custom design project, there would be perceived impediments and challenges along the way; this project would be no different. That stated, Sam was forthright and prepared to discuss options when these potentially difficult moments arose. He had a great way about him and brought a real sense of calm and came prepared with options for resolution. Having dealt with many contractors that were confrontational and/or irate this was truly a welcome and appreciated skill set. Here's our story: My wife and I bought a house in Q4 2019. The house itself seemed turnkey ready, but both the front and back yards needed major work. The previous owners put a pretty good mask on them during the selling process... I'd guess that they hired someone for yard clean-up, then simply poured tanbark on top of weeds (without properly removing them). During the purchasing process, we learned that the irrigation system was original 1955 galvanized steel and needed to be replaced. The end result was: our new house looked great from the inside... but the yards turned into neighborhood blights after about 3-4 months. We needed help. After blowing our nest egg on a down payment, we saved for another year to be able to afford actual landscape/hardscape. We weren't sure where to begin and engaged multiple vendors. Pearman Landscape was among them. From our first meeting, Robert Pearman behaved more like a trusted confidant than a vendor. We had never purchased hardscape services before... and it definitely showed. Rather than lead us around by our nose, like the greenhorns we obviously were, he described the entire process like an impartial 3rd party. Multiple times, he gave us information while acknowledging "whether you go with me or somebody else." Robert immediately sent over his designer, Kristin Bailey. I had read the Yelp reviews from Jody and Bob and immediately got worried, as they both claimed she was unresponsive. Luckily, I had a totally different experience. Kristin was prompt, she was polite, she was helpful, and I ended up chatting with her for about 45-minutes after we walked through my yard. I found her to be an absolute treat and I can't imagine anyone having a bad experience with her. She was wonderful every step of the way. Listened to what we needed, asked us great follow-up questions, made sure she was including plants and trees that we wanted in our design... and finished our plan in less than 2-weeks. It was very reasonably priced and we fell in love with the plan immediately after viewing it. I can't speak highly enough about Kristin. Based on our positive experience, we decided to move forward with Pearman Landscape. Not only will they redo our hardscape/landscape/irrigation, but I intend to retain them for garden maintenance after the project is completed. I'll provide updates and pictures as the process unfolds, but suffice to say: we're having a totally positive experience so far and I wanted to leave a 5-star review for any potential clients who might be considering Pearman. My family reached out to 15 different landscape companies around the SJ/South Bay area and Pearman stands head-and-shoulders above the other 14 suitors, both in terms of promptness, responsiveness, helpfulness, and pricing. When we bought our house, the backyard was hideous, with some old concrete and a small rotten wood deck. We drew up some plans on what to build and called Evergreen to get a bid. They had been highly recommended by neighbors. Mike came out, carefully listened to our ideas and asked some questions. Then he showed us some options on what they could build and also came up with the perfect solution to provide the shade we wanted to have. He pointed out a project they had just completed in our neighborhood. We walked by there in the evening and frankly were blown away. I remarked to my wife, well they are probably very expensive. So we awaited the bid which came the next day already, and it was very competitive. In fact it was lower than another firm that we has contacted. So it was an easy call to hire Evergreen. A couple weeks later the owner Ray and his team came out to start the job. It was amazing to watch them: Every detail was professionally and meticulously attended to, you could see top notch quality work everywhere you looked. In all that they were also very efficient: It took them just 3 and a half days for the entire project to transform our backyard. And I could not be more happy with the outcome. At the end we had a request to change something to extend the shaded area. Before I even finished my sentence, Ray said: "I will do it", and they came out and completed it the same week. I was referred to Bella Terra by my landscape designer to install complete front yard plantings as well as irrigation, a $15k job. The gentleman promptly returned my call and we started to talk about my project. Things started off well, but during the conversation I mentioned that I was looking to get a couple of bids. He started to constantly interrupt me, emphasizing that he cannot compete with unlicensed,"illegal" workers that undercut him, and I was "wasting" his time". I was very close to just hanging up on him, but I let him steam out. I then informed him that I only deal with licensed, bonded and insured people. He apologized and said he'd get back to me and let me know if he can "fit" me in his schedule. Of course, I never received a call back and the job has been long done by another licensed landscaper.

But then they put on some small stones and refuse to show the receipt to the material purchasing. If you really want them do the work for you. Do mention to see the receipt, otherwise you not only got a poor job but also over-cost project. And by the way, his bid (labor cost) is the highest among what we found and we thought they would do a better job but was the most disappointed one among all projects we have got so far. so sometimes higher bid doesn't mean a better service.

The problems include inconsistent scheduling - visits every 3-7 weeks instead of monthly, being overpriced compared to other services in the market, and worst of all, failure to take responsibility for the plants they planted as initially agreed upon. Rather than taking responsibility and replacing the plants, they accused me of neglect, when we in fact weed and handle seasonal planting - and tried to upsell us instead.

Our project was a small yard with a combination of hard surface and the installation of artificial turf for our dogs. I was surprised how good it looks and the dogs seem to enjoy it as much as real grass. I interviewed a few companies and chose Landscape Solutions based on how easy they were to talk to and how transparent they were with their process including design and billing. The entire job went very smoothly. I changed a few things after we started, and they were upfront about how that would impact the time to completion and the cost. In both cases their estimates were accurate. Their pricing was competitive and given the quality of the finish product and the ease of working with them I found it to be very reasonable. The guys they had doing the work were very professional, polite, and easy to work with. They cleaned up after each days work and returned the next morning right on time. I appreciated that they were very respectful of my time and my home. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I have already recommended them to a friend who may need work done in the future. They are a 5 star contractor. I highly recommend them. I'll attach a before and 2 afters. 1 day and 1 night. They did an amazing job with the lighting and the drip system as well.

What I liked the most about Apollo are: 1. Clear communication: the complete scope of the work, project start time 2. Quality of work* I am happy with what I see with my new backyard. 3. Price: I had a few different estimates from different contractors. The range is not huge but there are differences. Apollo finished the project in three days (2 and half days). I recommend him for your landscaping projects and I will definitely contact him again for future projects I may need his service.

For a job that would normally take 6 weeks, it ended up taking more than 6 months to finish. Not only did he not know how to do many aspects of the job, I had to constantly remind him of everything. He also tried to hide things from me or plainly lie to me. On the very first day of the job, he told me that there was a lot of traffic on US101 and he could not make it. Indeed, there was a bad accident there. Most people work a partial day when they hit bad traffic, but I said he can start the next day. On the second day of the job, he came to demolish my existing yard. I specifically told him to keep one tree at the center of my yard, and an hour later, his guys chopped it off. Rather than being upfront with me about it, *I* had to confront him about it. He apologized, and I said okay. I showed Apolo that I have a major gas line running through my yard and asked him to be VERY careful to not hit my gas line, and guess what, one of his guys specifically dug in that area and hit my gas line! *face palm* [1 star off] At this point, it was clear to me that he cannot keep a competent crew and the transient guys he hires do not care one bit about my yard, or their safety apparently. I talked to Apolo about my expectations if he were to continue to work for me, and he reassured me that he will improve. I told Apolo that the decking board we needed must be ordered right away because of COVID supply chain issues. He told me he did, but when I looked at his order date, it was not ordered until months later. At that point, the price also went up. (Hey, it's not my fault. If he ordered early like I told him, this would not have been a problem.) This oversight added several extra months to our project. [1 star off] When Apolo started building my deck, he looked confused. At first, he told me his decking guy quit so no one can work. I told him I will hire someone else, but he insisted on the job. After a few weeks, he hired someone from Craigslist. Okay, so build me a deck. It was still not built. I kept telling him I will hire someone else, but he kept on insisting he will do it (probably because he already paid for the higher priced decking boards). He actually then had to consult someone else about building the deck. After multiple re-sawing and re-anchoring, his crew pieced together something that resembled a deck. However, I noticed that the wrong edge pieces were used. I confronted him about it, and at first he said "I noticed that too" and then he said "Home Depot broke it when I picked it up, so I put another board there, but Home Depot said they will replace it." Which one is it -- that his guys installed the wrong pieces by mistake or Home Depot broke it when he picked it up? I looked at his replacement order, and it was a new order dated *after* I had confronted him, not a replacement order. [1 star off] Furthermore, Apolo was supposed to pave bluestone for me. The bluestones are manufactured square or rectangular in shape, but for some reason, his guys kept re-sawing them and I ended up with various tiny pieces...not the clean-cut pattern I instructed at all. He blamed the bluestones for not being perfect squares or rectangles. Regarding a new irrigation system, I made it very clear initially that my neighborhood has low water pressure, and he needs to design many more stations than normal. After he put in the irrigation system, he realized my water pressure was too low (I already said this at the very beginning!), and had to re-do some lines to add another station, charging me more money. [1 star off] Lastly, I told him I wanted certain fruit trees planted, one of which is an old-fashioned lemon tree. He plants me a sweet Meyer lemon tree with diseased leaves. I told him I wanted a healthy, regular, old-fashioned, tart Eureka lemon tree. He gave me a convoluted story about how a nursery in L.A. carries it, but there is a minimum order to ship it, and he has to pair it with some other order to make it worthwhile. After listening to that story, I went to a nursery 5 minutes from my house and bought an Eureka lemon tree and planted it myself. Toward the end of 6 months, there were still parts of the job that were unfinished, but Apolo was reluctant to return to finish things up. He even argued with me about how he did not want to pay for another lawn edge piece for $70 or a decking screw for $5. I paid him tens of thousands of dollars by the way. Anyway, I just did not want to work with him anymore. It was faster if I did things myself. I still gave him a generous final payment more than what I should have, because I wanted to part on amicable terms. This is not a 0-star review because the shrubs he planted at the back of my yard look quite nice. That is the only part of the job that went right.
