While recently visiting NY I got hit with the donut bug and hopped on Yelp to see what spot was in walking distance from MSG. Dough popped up and with as much NYC pizza as I'd eaten since landing the name fit with my daily agenda. As I entered a guy was giving a group of people a museum-like tour of the cool wall art. I'm not sure if that's a usual thing but I wanted to join. lol. The decor is hip and makes you want to sit in. The donuts are huge. I imagined they would be from the pictures I saw prior but they were even larger than expected in person. I went with a glaze and a strawberry donut. The price was high but for the size and the artisanal style, I expected it. The donuts: they are fluffy. The texture is unlike anything I've had donut-wise. The glaze would good but the icing on the strawberry was POPPING. I napkined off my glaze donut residue but when it came to the strawberry I had to hit my best curly- sue impersonation on my fingers for the strawberry glaze. As for the dough. It was unique. Yeasty. Something that tastes different than most pastries. Undoubtedly not bad, but also not great... I'm still puzzled. I feel like Winchells and for certain Pinkbox (Their Doughcro donut alone) are better overall (and more accessible to a native west coaster) but next time I'm in New York I'll have to go back to Dough to try a few more items that have tasty icing on the top. read more

Not the same. Ever since the original founder Fany Gerson left to establish her own Fan-Fan Doughnuts, DOUGH doughnuts has not been the same as I had remembered. Quality seems to have fallen, and prices have understandably risen, but the doughnuts are so thick, doughy, and dense. To start off we walked in and the lady behind the counter didn't even greet us she just continued her phone conversation in Spanish for a good 5-10 minutes. I absolutely love Doughnuts (Donuts)! And Dough is doing it right; I have been going to them for years to their original spot in Brooklyn that is quite small! The Hibiscus donut is my absolute favorite! The Nutella donut was amazing! The cafe au lait donut is superb and I would definitely get again. The blood orange is always a great option as well! The pillowy puffs of love are always the right choice on any day! The only thing I can say that was wrong is one of my hibiscus donuts was half raw. Had high hopes of this donut shop based on previous reviews, but was extremely let down. Tried the Hibiscus donut and thought it was VERY dry, and the dough was very dense. The icing itself was tart and I enjoyed the flavor; a shame the dough was not fresh. My friend ordered the Nutella donut and had the same sentiments about it. I don't know if the donuts were not fresh because it was 1:30 pm, but not an acceptable excuse if ALL you sell is donuts. Half of the flavors were gone as well. Store itself seems to be falling apart, the glass door at the entrance of the shop is shattered, and the floors are broken and peeling up (they've tried to mend this tripping hazard by placing rugs all around). At $5.45 for a donut, they should be able to afford putting in a little TLC to the storefront. Would not suggest these overpriced, stale donuts. read more

I first went to Dough about four years ago (at the time I first wrote a review) and really loved it. I'm a fan of doughnuts and fully support their status these days as a creative and trendy baked good. I was in the area the other day having lunch with a friend and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to return to Dough and get some shameless carbs. Dough has a simple setup - it has minimal decor and a large back counter where the doughnuts are on display. They also have a single communal table if you choose to sit and enjoy your carbs. There's also a small cooler with some bottles beverages to purchase, some hot beverages that are made to order, as well as complementary water. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and they had a pretty decent selection - I would say around 10-15 different flavors. We decided to split two doughnuts: the cheesecake and the chocolate salted caramel. The cheesecake was a cake doughnut with a cream cheese frosting and graham cracker crust sprinkled on top. This wasn't my favorite - the toppings had nice flavor but the doughnut itself could have been a bit more moist - it wasn't dry but the entire balance of flavors and mouthfeel seemed off. The chocolate salted caramel was slightly better, but the doughnut portion as still borderline dry, and the chocolate overpowered any caramel flavor there was. Overall, Dough's offerings weren't awful, but definitely a marked decrease in quality compared to what I've previously had. With the stiff competition these days in the doughnut game, you can definitely get better ones elsewhere. read more

This donut came to me by chance. I was camping out for The Today Show and the leftover donuts at closing time were distributed to us. So, keeping in mind that this had probably been sitting out for a minute, can say it was really delicious. I don't know the exact flavor but it was a maple glaze with some candied nuts on top. It's pretty massive, tall, and very sweet. I wouldn't expect someplace right next to Rockefeller to be so good but I was impressed! The inventory at this shop appeared to have dwindled to a precious few by the time I got there at 6PM on a Sunday. I was late because I lose all sense of direction when I pop out of a subway station. The place has a pretty open set up with one large communal table in the middle of the establishment. Dough has a nice selection of doughnuts with an interesting combination of flavors. I went for the raspberry chocolate, which I did not enjoy. This is not a jab at Dough; I probably chose two flavors that did not agree with my tastebuds. Came here with my husband on a whim and was at first glance pretty impressed with the selection of flavours here! The store itself was kinda run down, I couldn't tell if they were under construction, or they just had a very "industrial" type of set up. The person at the counter couldn't seem to care less and seemed pretty annoyed when we were asking questions about the available flavours, what was popular, and what her recommendations were. We got a 6 pack of flavours including their July 4 special donut, jelly, banana hazelnut, strawberry, toasted coconut , and cafe au lait. I always have a soft spot for Dough. They are my favorite doughnuts and I've yet to find a spot better. First off they don't use lard, the dough alone is aromatic, and they have the best artisanal flavors. Yes, you can find fun flavored doughnuts across NYC but it's just something about them. The last time I was here I tried to use cash and was told they were cashless so the lady just handed me the doughnut since I had to unlock my card and they were closing. It was only a few options left but the strawberry jelly doughnut was calling me even though the vegan option was the only one left. When I say that doughnut was the light of my night I mean it. I had strawberry sugar all over my face walking down 6th Ave. The jam was sweet and tart which created so much balance with the doughnut. I bussed that doughnut down quickly. I couldn't tell it was vegan at all. No weird texture issue. There's another spot that could take some pointers from their vegan doughnuts... Happened to pass by so I thought I'd grab some goodies for my friends! There were fun summer seasonal flavors like hibiscus and blood orange, but I was really just thinking more basic flavors would be homey and warm when sharing with others The Mocha (top right) was good but nothing that special in my opinion. It was what it was, which was a good ol' chocolate glaze with espresso notes. The Blueberry Lemon (bottom right) gave me about the same impression. Good but not wow. It has a nice lemon zing though! The Cafe au Lait (bottom left) was probably the most underwhelming. I wish the coffee flavor were a bit stronger. The Dulce de Leche (top left) was my favorite out of the four. It was not overly sweet but still had that beautiful caramelly taste to it. I think the main reason why I found Dough to be a four star place is because for doughnuts, they aren't very much like doughnuts. Or mayhaps it's just my expectation for a donut that led Dough to fall short in my book. The doughnut to glaze ratio was too much:not enough, and the dough itself was a bit too heavy/chewy for my liking. I think I could have liked Dough a lot more if they had simply made their doughnuts smaller, an unpopular opinion I'm sure given they are known for their larger size.
