Stopped in here for drinks because several of the shop owners in the plaza said this place made the best margaritas...they were definitely correct! I had spent the morning at the farmer's market, and then did a little shopping in Mesilla Square. By this time, my friends and I needed some adult refreshment. We walked into unexpected splendor. The crystal chandeliers over the beautiful bar would make any contessa envious. Everything that your eye rests on as you walk in is beautiful. There were four of us and we just wanted to relax so they let us wander into one of the private sitting rooms, complete with cocktail table and sofas. It was wonderful- there was also a tv in the room, a bistro table and four chairs and the sofas- how divine! We ordered their best margarita and they were filled to the brim...so delicious! Our waiter, Zino, gave us pointers on the historical items of note- wow! Two of my friends went with Zino into the room that is famous for its haunting. When our friends got back, their drinks were gone!!! The ghosts must have drank them! Hahahha- apparently my silliness and my other pal's goofiness gave away the secret that we drank them ourselves...so what to do in such a situation? Order another round. My sea bass was excellent.Crème Brûlée wasn't the best. My Manhattan had way too much bitters so it tasted more like a Boulevardier which has Campari. As for the atmosphere , the Double Eagle is a jewel.We are lucky to have this place, a trip back in time to Victorian era splendor, in our area and everyone should go at least once. After coming to this restaurant after a recommendation from a friend, we were excited to try it. They told us 20-25 minutes for a group of 8. We offered repeatedly to split into groups of 4. 90 minutes later, after they seated several groups our size that arrived after us, we just left. Hands down......the best restaurant in Mesilla. Walked in at 9:40 and our filets, with the best double stuffed potato. Service was absolutely immaculate. The atmosphere, even though outside patio, felt very calm/mellow/laidback. The margaritas were mind blowing. Worst experience ever. Christmas lunch. First they "lost" our reservation even though they remembered we called three days ago and confirmed it. We waited over an hour to be seated. Then once seated, it took over 20 minutes and two requests just to have a server bring us water. The food on the buffet? Cold. All of it. Maybe room temperature, a clear violation of the state health code. Two of my party literally couldn't eat anything. When I complained to the manager, Michael, he yelled at me and asked me to leave. When I explained that none of this was my fault, he said he would "make it right" on the bill. He took a whopping 10% off the check of over $400. The entire meal should have been comped and Michael should have apologized, not threatened me. If you eat here, you deserve what you get. read more

Deserves more than 5 stars. I LOVE this place and can't wait to return. Who knew that in the middle of Old Mesilla, there was this gem of a restaurant that was not only BEAUTIFUL and HISTORICAL but had great food and award winning margaritas. It's amazing inside. My describing it won't do it justice - so will have to post photos. There are a lot of special rooms that you can reserve for groups. Each is unique and beautiful with red walls, chandeliers, original museum quality oil paintings, and historical documents in frames related to the area. I loved the Carlotta room with the story of the two lovers who may still be there... Another room had a gorgeous gold rail balcony over a dinner area perfect for a fine dining wedding reception and another had a bar and floor room for mingling or dancing. The saloon type bar at the entrance was breathtaking. It has outside seating too - so you are covered for anything from fine dining to casual. Cost ranged from about $9 to $18. The central Billy the Kid patio was enclosed with NASA designed sun glass above head letting in natural light for the numerous plants. They had a plank upon which William H Bonney (Billy the Kid) had enscribed his name as well as some original letters he wrote to the judge while he was in the courthouse down the block. Food was excellent. I felt like I was at a museum and a restaurant. The margarita lived up to the hype - yummy! Great experience and will include it in my musts whenever I am within 100 miles of it. read more

Bottom line it started when I came in for a reserved time and the hostess told me that they did not have anything under my name. I had made the reservation a week prior. I called back 3 days later to re confirm. She finally told me that they had a table after all. Unbeknown to me there was a wedding dinner happening that night I was not informed of that. I would not have schedule the 6 party table if they would have given me that information. The food was cold and drinks took to so long that we tried to get drinks at the bar - that didn't work out neither they told us that we had to wait for the waiters. I took 1hour and 45 minutes to get our meals. $400.00 meal sucked. I would tell you to go to Texas Road house instead of the nut house. -10 on service. Waiter apologized serval times. Dishonest. My first (and last) visit was for lunch today. The food was nothing special and when I received my bill, the waiter: 1) charged more for two items than was stated in the menu 2) failed to apply the "happy hour" discount on our drinks - despite pushing that fact at least three times while we ordered (surely their computer could address this if management cared) 3) added a credit card fee despite nowhere in the restaurant nor on the menu does it say they will charge extra for not paying cash I asked to speak to the manager, but he/she was "in a meeting" so I recalculated my bill myself. read more

We brought our party for a birthday. We enjoyed the bar and the bartenders were wonderful. The dinner was mediocre at best. My mother, the birthday girl, had horrible fishy tasting Mahi Mahi. The other meals were fine. All steaks and sides. They comped the meal for my mother as it was fish that should never been served in the first place. Then we ordered dessert. Multiple bottles of wine. Overall a $500+ dinner tab which we would have been fine with paying EXCEPT THEY CHARGED US A 10% credit card fee!!!!!!!! So they comped a meal and then charged a bull shit extra $50 for using a credit card. Seriously!?!?!? In a nice restaurant???? Unbelievable!!! We made a reservation for our wedding anniversary. -Despite having a reservation, it took over 10 minutes to see a hostess then another 15 to be seated. (It was a Thursday night and not busy at all) -Waiter was polite and attentive but didn't know much about the bar menu. -I ordered the petite filet mignon and double baked potato. It was really good! Steak was flavorful and tender, no complaints! -my husband ordered prime rib and steak fries. The steak fries were two quartered potato pieces that appeared to be broiled. They were way overcooked, black on the bottom and extremely hard. The steak had zero flavor and was tough. Menu said aged... which was definitely not the case. We have made better prime rib at home. Rather amazing place tucked away in the historic Old Mesilla District of Las Cruces. If you like the history of the Mesilla you'll love this restaurant. The ambiance is lovely and old world. This review makes me sad. Double Eagle gave my mom and me the best "fine dining" experience when we first moved here 6 years ago. The restaurant is gorgeous, on the beautiful square in Mesilla. My wine glass was dirty. My $8 caesar was small. My husband's posole was luke warm and not great. I ordered petite filet and lobster tail. The filet was rare, I ordered medium. When I mentioned the temperature, no apology, just "would you like it cooked more?" Uh..yes. That is why I mentioned it. It was really rare! My lobster was cooked well but I think it was previously frozen, not a ton of flavor. If people ate going to charge $58 for steak and lobster, cook it properly. Monitor your glassware! My glass had food stuck and lip marks! I heard things being returned all around. Not going back. read more

I don't know who said that adding cumin to rice would make it Mexican or Tex mex but it was awful. The red Chile on the enchiladas was also filled with cumin. It seem the lid fell off the cumin jar. Had a $39 8oz sirloin steak that took over an hour to get was overcooked, dry, and cold. This place is WAY over priced for the quality and service you get. I have known this and not sure why I even bothered to give it a try again. It used to be good not great but good. Service was great! Food on the other hand, not so much! The appetizer was supposed to be hot/warm and was cold on the inside. When they brought dinner out there was a dollop of garlic butter on our steaks. The steak was so cold, it didn't even melt the butter! The twice baked potato used to be very good, but this time was dry with no flavor at all. Must be new cooks, this has never happened to us before. This place is apparently under new ownership. The menu now calls the place, "Peppers." The quality of the flautas, enchiladas and tacos we enjoyed was first rate. So too, the Coconut Flan we shared for dessert. They serve "Mexican Coca-Cola" which is made with pure cane sugar and tastes like the cokes we remember from our childhoods. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed in the beautiful plant-filled courtyard under a giant skylight. You need to see and taste for yourselves. Salads, cocktails, baked ootato and the steak were great! The cheese plate needs a re-fresh. Three cheeses and one had truffles. My server did not describe these cheeses or tell me about the truffle. I wish she had. One bite and everything tasted like truffle for the rest of the meal. The onion jam was good but the grapes need to go. Berries, pecans and a drizzle of honey would improve the cheese plate. And, punt the truffle cheese or give people an option to substitue it. read more

The prices are insane, the food is far below sub-par, they FRY their Chiles Rellenos.. what?! the GREEN sauce on the top is about teaspoon size vs the wonderful red sauce it should come with. I asked the waitress to please put some sauce on my rellenos and they charged e $1.75! REALLY?!!! I also asked for the small plate which is $10, they charged me for the $14 plate... AND we paid for our drinks at the bar and they tried to charge us again at the table. Nope, not impressed. bad food, bad food... very... bad food. read more

This was on my must stop when in town list. Last trip was less than satisfactory. First was told no seating for us, yet restraunt was empty, and because I refused to sit in the secondary restraunt suddenly there was a table. Food was great, service was below par. One of my family members hurt herself while sitting on the antique chair and was barely offered ice. Nothing was offered for the physical pain suffered while dining, no one ever came to check on our table. Biggest disappointment for $200 for 3 adults and 1 kid. It is with extremely heavy heart that I write this review. Double Eagle has been a popular place to go and a rare treat, for those who live in Las Cruces, NM and the surrounding areas. Their food and service has always been top notch, but as of lately, they have not only gone down hill in the service they provide to their customers, but also their quality of food that they have been serving over the past 5 years. From the raw steak they serve, to the extremely gummy corn in their Mexican street corn and the food that is served lukewarm to their hungry customers, I can definitely say that they no longer resemble the restaurant that my family and I have grown to love. The final push for me was on Saturday afternoon, when my husband and I went to dine at Double Eagle for an early supper. When we walked in, there was almost no one in the restaurant. We were seated immediately at a table in the courtyard area (aka 'Pepper's'). We sat at the table we were placed at and waited for 15 minutes to have someone to come and take our drink order, but nobody ever came to wait on us. The table we were seated at was extremely unstable, tipping constantly and sitting at a slope, the chairs were just as unstable and uncomfortable as well. I really miss the Double Eagle of yesteryear and pray it returns, someday. In the meantime, we will bid a sad farewell to a once great place to dine. read more

If this is the best steak house in New Mexico - they have the distinction listed on their website - then I am sticking to green chile enchiladas and grilling my steaks at home. This is a place that charges $45 for steak but doesn't know how to be a place that should. I am not a restaurant snob. But I have dined in some amazing steak places around the world - from holes in the walls to 5 star NYC establishments - and know how a place that charges $45 for a steak should act, feel and perform. 1. Service 4 of 10 - our waiter seemed only to pass by on the way to other tables most of the night. He rarely checked on us once the food was out. He did not write down our order and everything came out wonky. Wrong side on my entree, wrong dressing on a salad, we had barely started our salads when the entrees came. That's poor kitchen management, but still. Please, if you own this place, have someone teach your servers how to present a bottle of wine. If I am gonna pay that much for a bottle, it at least deserves to be presented. You do not just set it on the table in passing with an explanation that you don't have the bottle I want and that you hope this is a good substitute. And if the cork won't pop out in one piece, make sure the server knows that bottle isn't good without being told. First impressions matter. When someone calls to make a reservation, tell your hostess not to say "I gotcha girlfriend". Then tell your hostesses to dress respectfully. I felt more like I was being led to a "room upstairs" or a roller rink instead of to a charming and elegant dining room. The manager did come by once to check on us and seemed shocked we told him things were all messed up. I told him our server was trying to fix the mistakes in our order. That's when the manager disappeared without asking what the problems were or engaging us further. He never came by again to see if our issues were resolved. 2. Wine list 4 of 10 - extensive. But don't expect them to actually have the wine. So pick 2 or 3 you'd like and hope they have one. 3. Food 4 of 10 - we decided since it was New Mexico to try the escargot in red chile. Oh my god! What a disaster. The red chile was super hot, the poor little escargot tasted more like chewy meat balls. Put escargot in some garlic butter the way they are meant to be served. Not everything works in chile. The unseasoned steaks were flavorless. As though they had been cooked completely in an oven and never touched a grill. The dull steak knife they brought with the $45 boneless ribeye provided little assistance in cutting the fat and gristle off the cut. My twice baked potato looked like one of those my Mom used to order frozen in the little plastic microwavable pouches from Schwan's. In fact it very well may have been. The broccoli florets that came mistakenly with my meal were cold and unseasoned. 4. Imperial bar 9 of 10 - I will say our bar drinks were sturdy, well crafted and a very tasty cocktail. I would go to the Imperial Bar for an old fashioned any day. I'm sorry. You can only get by on your amazing decor to a point. $200 later we'll not be back. We so wanted to like this place because we are big on eating out at places with history - and ghosts! read more

Outstanding! We wanted a good steak dinner and came across this by chance. Apparently there is another restaurant attached to this, Pepper. We went to Double Eagle. I had the petite filet and my husband had the ribeye. It was fantastic. Baked potatoes and we shared the classic Caesar Salad. Food, service and ambiance was fantastic. The dining area is ornate and interesting to look at but it smells pretty gross. Y'all need some new carpet and send the curtains to the cleaners. I went to Double Eagle for the aged steak. It is absolutely worth it (if they serve the steak you order). I have been there exactly twice. I ordered the filet mignon on both occasions. The second time I ordered it, I was served a bistro cut sirloin. I should have sent it back or asked for a price adjustment but I did not and I regret it. read more

Went to eat here last night and had a great experience. The food was properly prepared and the service was excellent. The steaks were done correctly and the duck was nice and juicy. Had a couple minor hiccups, but they were resolved quickly. My only complaint is the water has a mineral taste. Regardless, I highly recommend the Double Eagle. read more
