We had lunch at Dottie's yesterday and immediately fell in love with the sisters behind the bar. They were super friendly, fun, and truly made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, that's really the highlight of our visit. We were starving, so we all ordered hearty plates. My daughter ordered chicken strips with okra and corn. I had the same but swapped for mac & cheese and green beans. My husband ordered the roast beef with green beans and mac & cheese. All meals came with a cat head biscuit. The food looked great, but there was zero seasoning in anything. I honestly don't know how you mess up green beans, but somehow it happened. I barely made it through two bites of the chicken just to get something in my stomach. Then I tried the mac & cheese... OMG. I can't even describe the taste--I discreetly spit it into my napkin. Thankfully my daughter shared her okra, which was the only decent thing on my plate. Her "corn" turned out to be creamed corn, which she doesn't like. She thought she ordered regular kernel corn, so she was disappointed. She used enough ketchup to get down two chicken strips. My husband's roast beef was... interesting. It was more like a shredded roast-and-rice casserole. Not sure if that's even a thing, but that's what it resembled. He said it tasted good and ate it all, but even he couldn't touch the mac & cheese. He poured almost an entire salt shaker on his green beans just to make them edible. In the end, the best thing on the table was the cat head biscuit. Again, the staff was absolutely wonderful--truly the saving grace of this place. While driving thru Helen, GA decided to check this place out. We were not disappointed that is for sure. Set up like a cafeteria style service. Have many choices for each day's lunch. We had two meals today both of us had the Pot Roast and it was great and good quality not a lot of fat on this meat. My wife had the mashed potatoes with brown gravy and greens. Greens were very hot temperature wise and fantastic to eat. Also had the Cat Head Biscuit which she enjoyed. I had the Pot Roast with green beans and the Brunswick stew. Stew was fantastic and wonderful. Had the corn bread which was okay nothing to write home about. Staff was very helpful and having a good time and enjoying the work they are doing. Awful! That is the first word that comes to mind to describe this restaurant. Not only was the food awful, with the eggs being cold and tasted like powdered eggs.. so were the bacon and the biscuit. The service was awful too. The lady that slapped my fake eggs, burnt cold bacon and cold biscuit on the plate would rather have been at the dentist getting a tooth pulled than actually serve my breakfast with any personality or heaven forbid a smile. Perhaps she needed a day off. I'm just thankful that I don't live in Helen so this isn't a choice that I have to have on the regular. If it were, I'd eat at home. It's too bad as it's a missed opportunity being where it's located. My advice to anyone reading this, save yourself the expensive price tag and go somewhere else. read more

As soon as we entered the restaurant she asked if we had ever been before and then preceded to tell us to only sit in this ate and only chose a two top table. So 8 of us were crammed into a small area while the rest of the dining area was empty. We could not carry on a conversation because the next table was right beside of us. This is the first time I have ever written an online review but due to the extreme nature of my visit I have to make this one. This review will be lengthy to give full detail and accurate account of our experience. while visiting Helen from Tennessee My wife, son, daughter in law, and I went to Dottie's Kitchen for breakfast and to shorten the review I'm going to focus only on the major issue with our visit. The inability to get crispy hash browns with onions and the extreme response to a refund for a product they apparently are unable to provide. When I placed the order, as part of our order for me & my wife, I ordered hash browns crispy with onions. The young lady that was taking that part of the order to the kitchen verified with me hash browns with onions crispy & I said yes crispy she said really done I told her yes let them cook. When they came out the first time the potatoes were potato white with almost no hint of color from being on a griddle. I informed her they were not crispy and to please make them crispy. As she was walking away she kept shaking her head with an attitude. After probably 15 minutes they were brought back out with a very slight light brown color only in varying places. I said they are not crispy and to just let me get a refund for them. She said "dad is not going to give a refund and that they could deep fry them". I asked to speak to her dad, she went to the back & after probably 4 to 5 minutes she returned from the back with 2 to go boxes, slammed them on the table and said "we are not refunding your money but we deep fried them". I asked her to let me speak to her dad and she said "he's not going to refund your money". I asked again to speak to her dad, she again was saying he will not refund my money and after asking at least 1 if not 2 more times to speak to her dad she went to get her dad. When he came out and asked what was wrong I started to explain I ordered crispy hash browns and he interrupted me saying he had already cooked them, "they are crispy" & he was not going to refund my money. I said I didn't order deep fried hash browns. As this was the 3rd attempt to cook crispy hash browns, I then told him to keep his hash browns and the money because he apparently needed it and suggested that he learn how to cook. I might also add that my family had already eaten their food while I was still waiting on my hash browns. He said to leave or he was going to call the police. He and his daughter started with the F bombs and to get the F___ out so we left. Just a note that up until the very end I spoke very politely to the daughter and the dad and I'm amazed that he & she acted that way over $8.00 of hash browns. Let it be known this is a walk up order pay and go sit and eat establishment and apparently once they have your money it does not matter what they put in front of you it's yours. Buyer beware!!!! We visited on a Saturday morning during Octoberfest and I was amazed how the staff even small staff handled the amount of customers with ease. They were busy, but super friendly and smiling even though the crowds were out the door. We met the owner and she was so incredibly nice and welcoming!!! The food was delicious! Biscuits were yummy so many ways to order them. Grits were hot and delicious! Cafeteria style ordering but honestly, it worked well for the restaurant crowds and staff. Coming in for breakfast, we were expecting to be greeted and seated by a hostess, instead your directed to go to a line, it's like a school cafeteria style. Everything is in warmers. You have to either order their special or order ala carte, no in between. I ordered the special, two eggs a meat and a side and a bread. I had to get scrambled eggs because that's what comes with that special. I'm not a fan of scrambled eggs. I got the country fried steak and gravy, home potatoes, which were cold. The gravy had zero flavor. The country fried steak was soggy from sitting in that warmer. The biscuits were big but not like homemade biscuits these are more cakey, if that makes sense. We felt like we were eating hotel breakfast food, which we could if had at our hotel for free. Not recommended. We spent $32 on two specials for breakfast. First note: we were here during the off-season so it was very quiet. This is set up as a serving line. For breakfast we were able to choose two eggs (scrambled are pre-prepared and in a bin), a meat, a side (such as grits, home fries, fruit, etc.), and a biscuit - with gravy if desired. Drinks are included; there is a drink bar with sodas, coffee and such. The food wasn't bad, but it is a bit pricey for what is served. A comparable place where we typically eat fixes a to-order three egg omelette with a full plate of hash browns and bread. Two of us eat there for $5 less than the price of two plates here. The biscuits here are know as cat head biscuits. They are as big as -- yes, you guessed it -- a cat head. They are very tasty. They were flaky and buttered just right. I ordered a side of pepper gravy. Very good. The home fries were not very good. Rubbery and cold by the time I sat down. Otherwise, the meal was satisfying. Service is good. They checked on us often. I'm sure that this place is hopping during the tourist season. That is likely the reason for the serving line concept. The atmosphere is nice. There are knotty pine walls and hardwood floors. I want to go outside and say, "Go to Huddle House OR Hofers folks... don't come in here!" People have NO IDEA what they are about to eat when they walk into that line. It is like a cafeteria line. 1. Grits were runny. How hard is it to mess up grits?! It was grit soup, but the grits were still crunchy. 2. Eggs were cold. Those are the WORST eggs we have EVER eaten in our life. When our child, who cleans her plate AND everyone elses, LEFT her eggs and said screw this, you know it is BAD. 3. Sausage was burned, greasy, and old. It was crumbling. They did not put it in a pan with a false bottom. 4. The biscuits were HUGE and they were decent. You were so grossed out by everything else, the biscuits didn't get their day! 5. We live locally & have eaten here a few times. Each time the service gets worse. We had breakfast around 9AM. The food is good most of the time however the biscuits were way over cooked today and the bacon ran out & we were finished eating by the time they brought it out. This is all after we were moved from our table because it was "reserved" & moved to a terrible table right by the cafeteria line. Speaking of this you come in and they tell you it's cafeteria style and sit anywhere. Really! Then why are they reserving tables? By the way, the party for the reserved table never showed up! We had a party of 5 today & had brought visiting family members with us today. It was embarrassing to be treated this way. We do not recommend & won't be back. The food was over done and in some cases cold even served from a warming tray. The service was slow to respond and then forgot half of my wife's food. When requested for the rest we were requested to wait and they would bring it out. For toast. Dottie's was hand selected as one of the places we planned to eat when I prepped for our 4 day trip to Helen GA. We went here for breakfast on a Wednesday. Arrived around 10:30AM. Upon arriving, you turn left and get in line - cafeteria style. Grab a tray and order. There is a big sign behind the counter showing the menu. The young woman that took our order and served the food on our plates did not have much personality. Being the first person to interact with customers, she should be friendly. It just sets the tone - good or bad. I ordered a steak cathead biscuit, 2 eggs, grits and hashbrowns. The women tried to steer me to home fries as the hashbrowns would take 10-15 minutes. I stuck with the hashbrowns. The biscuit was good but the steak could have been warmer. It also was not super flavorful. All of the food (other than the hashbrowns) is kept in mass quantities in silver tins. None of it was made to order. The eggs were flavorless - tasted like powdered eggs or something you would get in a middle school cafeteria. The grits were the only item that was served hot. They were okay, nothing great. The hashbrowns arrived and they were barely warm. I am guessing they were made and sat for a while before arriving to my table. They struck me as the pre-shredded kind in a bag like you would get at Costco. My wife got eggs, bacon and toast. She had the same opinion about the eggs. They forgot to bring her toast until we reminded them. When it arrived, it was cold - again, probably sat. I hate giving 1 star to places - especially locally owned places, but this place was simply not good. Trying to end on a positive note, the cashier and food runner were very friendly.
