My husband and I entered and we're greeted and that was it. Every cupcake place I go to is always so cheerful and friendly. They explain how to order and like to talk with you. The lady working the counter was just looking at us wanting us to hurry up and order. Didn't talk much or make any conversation. She could have helped us and gave her opinion on the best seller cupcakes or given her personal recommendation but she didn't.Came here for the 1st time and saw the mini's, small, and regular size cupcakes. It is pretty self explanatory however most people don't really read the signs and look for the person working the counter to explain things which is what we did and then she pointed to the sign. They show off all their cupcakes behind a glass case and you choose which ones you like based on flavor and size which i think is pretty neat. I like how your not obligated to buy only one size cupcake for me I just wanted a little taster so I got a mini raspberry lemon and my husband got their mini red velvet. Both were delicious. The cupcakes itself was really moist, and you can taste the flavor with each bite you take. I actually wanted to go back for another but needed to get some real food in my stomach. The frosting wasn't too much or overflowing it was the right amount to compliment the cupcake. read more

I can say, without a doubt that Dots cupcakes are the best cupcakes I've ever put in my mouth. In fact, I would rate Dots as the top 3 desserts in Los Angeles. I'm concluding from other reviews that they are considered expensive, so to that I say, you get what you pay for. The perfect combination of sweet, flavorful, moist yummyness. Just the word dots makes me salivate. This place is one of my absolute favorite places to visit on my "cheat days". They also make for a great gift when attending a party and instead of getting 1 cake with the same flavor you can get an assortment of flavors for each person to pick their favorite. My favorites: Choco-butter, apple pie, red velvet and carrot cake. I want one (or five) right now! read more

I love their mini cupcakes!! It allows you to try more flavors and they're so cute. I came on Valentines day, so they only had a few flavors. Their pink champagne and fleur de sel cupcake was delicious!! Their cupcakes are very moist and the frosting isn't too heavy. Their red velvet was okay, but I know they rotate their flavors so keep coming to try them all! read more

Gone in a few bites, the mini-cupcakes are the PERFECT size to satiate your sweet tooth, or in my case: tiny sweet tooth. Apple pie- Chunks of fresh apple, caramel sauce = pretty yummy. Pumpkin pie - I'm not a pumpkin pie girl, but I AM a pumpkin spice latte girl -- and they totally nailed it. Cookies n Cream - they managed to take an Oreo and make it a cupcake. Just delightful! The best part was that the chocolate cake was NOT too sweet and therefore didn't overwhelm the frosting. Strawberry lemonade - more lemony than anything, only one of my minis had the fresh strawberry chunks in it. While taste was just meh, this cupcake had the BEST presentation with little pink white chocolate curls on top. Peanut butter & banana - Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! This was definitely my favorite of the creations I enjoyed. Cappuccino - well, I'm pretty sure that's what it was anyway. ( I didn't order them) but there was a distinct espresso flavor in the frosting. pretty tasty. In addition to the awesome flavors the presentation is terrific. read more

TWO WORDS: MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP CUPPYCAKEZ Okay, that might have been more than two words. But seriously, these cuppycakes are so delish. Yes, I said cuppycakes. Get over it. Mini cuppycakes for 1.50, and normal sized cuppycakes for 2.50 (might be 2.75). Kind of pricey, but the presentation is cute. It accounts for its sweetness. As far as taste wise, I'd say their mint chocolate cuppycakes are their best. Think Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies turned into a delicious, soft, and morsel filled cupcake. Others worthy of tasting is their chocolate vanilla (there's vanilla chocolate too- reversed) and carrot cuppycakez. read more

I think this is the worst cupcake shop I've been to. I don't know what it is but even going inside the shop...the smell is just so gross. I came here awhile back and just reminded myself that I never want to buy a cupcake here again. It didn't really taste like a cupcake at all. read more

I walked in there not knowing it was the Grand Opening! I bought a red velvet and a chocolate mint cupcake. With purchase, I received a free mini cupcake of choice, so I picked a mini strawberry shortcake cupcake. Red Velvet: Soft red cake, but no taste. The cake in combination with the frosting didn't "wow" me and I've had better. Maybe it was the frosting? It wasn't very sweet IMHO. Chocolate Mint: It was like a cake version of the ever popular mint chocolate chip ice cream flavor. It had a very moist cake texture and I loved the little crunchy chocolate rice krispie balls on top. My favorite of the three cupcake flavors I bought that day. Strawberry Shortcake: It had a very faint strawberry taste. I would rather have the real version of the dessert. Total Price: $5.50 for two cupcakes (plus one free mini that is regularly $1.50)! That's a good deal in comparison to other cupcake places. read more

Oh Dots! What a very cute place that is homes to a variety of cute cupcakes!! I think the main perk about this place is the interior of this cupcakery. The shop itself is extremely adorable and I only wish it were bigger so I could hang around inside and never leave. But alas, the interior is the perfect size to pick your cupcakes and then skadaddle-- which in the end, I suppose the shop owners chose the right set up because the place would be oh so packed with people like me never wanting to leave. As for the cupcakes from this place: I've tried a variety from the mint, the strawberry shortcake, red velvet, some marble looking one, and a devils cake looking one. Overall the cupcakes I had were always pretty moist and sweet, but not too sweet! They were all a great balance of cupcakey-ness and frosting. The cupcakes also look so pretty~ You kind of feel bad for eating such a beautiful dessert but in the end, your sweet tooth gets the best of you and you indulge yourself in sweet tastiness. (The ones I had ranged from the big cupcakes and the minis. Both are great!) The price here is pretty good too~ 3 bucks for a 'regular' cupcake and about a $1.75 for a 'mini'. Not too shabby if you ask me! BOX TIP: If you ever get a box packed with cupcakes, make sure you open the box on a flat surface and not on the side walk or a place where the cupcakes can fall into a dirty place... The box consists of 4 flaps that can open out completely.. ....SO if you open your cupcake box on the side walk and the whole thing disassembles, remember that with cupcakes there is the 30 second rule... ORDER TIP: I really like the mint (there are little mint balls on it for a good crunch!) and the red velvet are really good! (I'm a red velvet suckaaah so yeah..) PARKING TIP: Parking in Pasadena SUCKS. Try find street parking (meters) and hope for the best. Or get a vespa and park on the sidewalk! read more

I have been coming to dots cupcakes for the past 2 years. I was always happy going to them for birthday celebrations and all in between. But today that all ends. A majority of the time, I enjoy the employees at dots. Except for one. Every time she tries to give me cupcakes that she picks. And every time, I have to stop her. Today I didn't have that opportunity since the store had several clients in the glass window. While being rung by another employee, I ask her if the other employee (who selected the cupcakes for me) was the owner. I was informed that she is the mother of the owner of dots cupcakes. I found the name of the owner and I sent her a polite email in regards to my visit. I won't be using dots cupcakes anymore. It's Old Town Pasadena, there's more bakeries to select from. read more

Whoops, this review is for their Old town locale: For a short period of time I would make it a ritual with my cousins who came in each weekend to head out to the Dots cupcakery store on Sunday's to satisfy our fix before we started another work week. We each came out with boxes and dozens of flavored cupcakes. Of course I started off sampling lots of the mini varieties but now I've had my staples that I can rely on and get full sized. The cakes are always moist and I can't say I've ever experienced a bad cake. The frosting to cake combinations are delightful and frosting amounts aren't excessive like other shops. Be on the look out for the seasonal items and if you find one that you like purchase them as I very seldom see them again once the season has past. Regarding the cleanliness/money handling review, I've never had a problem with that mix up and would surely have made it a point in my review. The store was always well staffed and always had a cashier appointed to their station and not behind the cases or in the kitchen. However, if I had to give a con it would have to be for lack of seating especially for this busy location when it proves difficult to eat a cupcake while walking past hundreds of pedestrians on the street. Their seating is far from ample. read more

In a nutshell: One frosting was good, but the cake has a weird texture and taste. I'd much rather go to Violet's around the corner! Will I return? Not likely. * * * * * * * * * * * * * I really wanted to like this place. Their cupcakes are so adorable, and some of their flavors are very unique. My co-worker and I shared two minis ($1.50 each): Chocolate Lovers and Coconut Almond. The cake for both of them was chocolate. At first glance, I thought they would be delicious - the cake was spongy and moist. But I have to agree with a previous reviewer - it has a very plastic-like taste. It also has a weird texture and did not sit well in my stomach. The chocolate frosting didn't have a lot of flavor and also had a weird texture - kind of gummy (and no, it wasn't fondant). The coconut almond frosting was very good - if I'd just had that, I'd be happy. Also, while the shop itself is as cute as their cupcakes, the layout is very awkward. People make their cupcake selections immediately left of the front door, then have to cross through the line to get rung up at the register. The whole time I was in there I felt like I was being shuffled around. Also, there were two women still picking flavors when I was ready to check-out, but because of the lay out, it was easy for them to swoop back in front of me. Reminded me of people at Coldstone picking their ice cream and mix-ins, except they're organized enough to let people who've decided to be helped first. Okay, I'm done with my rant. =) Now if only my tummy was done gurgling. read more

I pretty much inhaled the red velvet cupcake. Enough said! Oh and I love the decor of this place! read more

After our early dinner we stopped by Dots to grab some dessert to take back to our room. The place smelled great upon entering. We arrived about 30 min to closing, which kinda worried me for the quality and freshness. However, the cupcakes were all very moist and delicious. We ordered 4 regular cupcakes and a few minis. The only downside was that we loved a mini and wished we had gotten a full size one. The consistency of the frosting was perfect, not too thick or dry. I would much prefer going here than sprinkles cupcakes which has been a frequent stop for us when we are in this area. Being that it is down the street from one of our favorite restaurants, we will definitely return for a cupcake or two from now on. read more

I'm not really into the whole cupcake craze but we were walking through Old Town this past weekend and this place caught my eye. The tiny store was packed with people so we went inside to see what they had. I LOVE how they have mini cupcakes, those big ones are just too much for me to eat. I tried the red velvet, pumpkin pie, and oreo cupcakes. The red velvet was my favorite, very moist and not too sweet. I appreciated the fact that unlike Sprinkles, Dots is reasonable about their frosting. I hate how Sprinkles puts 1 inch of frosting on their cupcakes and I have to wipe most of it off. And the frosting at Dots isn't super cream cheesy or sweet either, definintely complemented the cupcake perfectly. The pumpkin pie was kind of disappointing, I felt like I could've made a better tasting cupcake. I really liked the oreo cookie cupcake and I was pleasantly surprised that it stayed moist after sitting on my counter for over a day. Will definitely come back here to try the apple pie cupcake. I wanted to get it but they ran out of the mini ones. read more

After having Sprinkles, I never thought I would find another cupcake shop that would please my taste buds. What an ADORABLE boutique-style shop! I was immediately attracted to the cutesy decor of each cupcake. It's also nice that they have mini versions of every flavor, in case you wanted to try out several cupcakes. I ordered the regular-sized Strawberry Lemonade and it was TO DIE FOR! There were fresh strawberries BAKED INTO the moist cake. Genius! I'm big on frosting, and the lemon cream cheese was thick and sweet enough to compliment the tart lemon cake. I also got the mini Raspberry Cheesecake and it was delicious! Downside: it's a bit small, so there isn't a place for you to sit and enjoy your order. The frosting may be a bit too sweet for some people, but I personally love it. To the friends who took me to Dots, if you're reading this, we must go again soon! read more

Cute Cute Cute!!! Everything about this establishment is cute. I've tried almost all flavors and was never dissapointed. My favorite is the chocolate mint. I always get the mini cupcakes, because it's just the right size to allow me to sample several flavors in one sitting. They are a little Pricey at $1.50 each, but they are so yummy. So it's worth the occasional splurge. The little heart carrier boxes are adorable, the employees are uber friendly, and the Bakery is so pretty in pink inside. :) Love this place! read more

Mini cupcakes were served at my friend's bridal shower and I couldn't wait to try the mint chocolate one. It was pure wackness! I asked the nice lady hosting the party who baked the cupcakes and of course she said Dots. I have to say that I was pretty upset when she blurted out that name. I swore to never ever have a Dots cupcake in my life due to a really bad experience. Heck, a week before they had their grand opening in Old Town Pasadena, they sent about 3 dozen complimentary cupcakes to my work and I'm a sucker for free things but I looked the other way and refused to take my share. If you guys really need to have a cupcake fix, head one block north of Fair Oaks then to Holly where you will find Violet's... it's pure, simple cupcake heaven. read more

I must say I am really shocked this Dots does not have a higher rating. I've had Sprinkles in Beverly Hills and I've had Magnolia in New York and Dots is by far the best. Their cupcakes are always moist and delicious. My personal faves are the red velvet, cookies and cream, and chocolate mint. I've never had a dry cupcake from them (and I've eaten many of their cupcakes). The cupcakes keep very well too when properly stored. And their cupcakes have a very good icing to cake ratio. Just the right amount and not terribly sweet. I've had mixed reactions with the staff, but usually they are very friendly and courteous. There is a minimum charge when you use cards. I don't remember what it is though... maybe $10. read more

I'm a big fan of the cupcake. In New York, I'd frequent Magnolia and Buttercup. I check out SusieCakes when I head the mile up to Brentwood. So when i went to Pasadena, I decided to check out Dots. And I was not disappointed. I'd only heard of Dots before as a "rip-off" of Sprinkles. Back in NY everyone was supposedly ripping off Magnolia (Buttercup being the forerunner), but who really cares? Are you going to patent a cupcake? Anyways, the shop is very cute. Lots of pink and a nice dot motif. The shop is tiny - very little wiggle room before the ordering counter and a glass case showing the novelties. I was hoping that there would be a lemon cupcake, namely because I've been craving lemon cupcakes since noshing on some at Life Is Sweet in Toronto over Christmas, but the closest I could find was coconut-lime. This was not my cup of tea, so instead J and I got all boring and split a chocolate/vanilla and a vanilla/vanilla. The cake in both was moist. I seem to find cupcake cakes usually being on the drier side, but I'm happy to report that this texture was quite fab. And the chocolate was rich while not being overwhelming. I would have liked a little more frosting on my cupcake, but the buttercream was yummy and balanced the cake well. A bit on the expensive side ($2.75/each) but worth it when your jonesing for a sweet. read more

With so many cupcake joints popping up everywhere, this place was a disappointment. It is better than CakeLove I must say. Walking in, this place is adorable! The decorations are so cute. I did get in trouble though, for trying to take a picture of their cupcakes! So sorry, no pics! I had the Red Velvet. I don't know why, but I always choose this first. It's like a cupcake staple! The cake was dry, and the frosting was plentiful, and way too sweet. I barely tasted the cream cheese. Not mention, the girls working, were not friendly to say the least. read more

First impression: What a cute, tiny bakery! It's like Sprinkles, but smaller and more cramped. The cupcakes were good, not WOW (better than Sprinkles though, hehe). I don't think I've tasted any wow-ing cupcakes, other than my friend's own home-baked ones. Anyways, I got Red Velvet (a must for me at any bakery), Chocolate Mint, Carrot, Strawberry Shortcake, and Vanilla. The majority of the cupcakes were actually pretty good - a little doughy, but good nonetheless. GET CHOCOLATE MINT - a very refined taste, and I love the little crispy chocolate balls on top!!! read more

To me, I think Dots Cupcakes are one of the best cupcakes because they are moist and sweet. Not too much or less sweet. Just perfect. I always purchase their cupcakes when it comes to anyone's birthday. I still haven't tried all different flavors, but when I got a chance to try other flavors, they were extremely good. I tend to get red velvet, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes. I know they are kind of expensive, but they are so worth it. read more

I have a vendor who always sends me Dots Cupcakes and I am officially a fan! Better than Sprinkles and not as good as Susie Cakes ( I just had a taste test between the three) - this little bakery is solid. I'm surprised that there are so many average reviews, but I've never actually have stepped foot inside the bakery and I've only had the minis. I definitely prefer the mini cupcakes over the full cupcakes because you can get a 2-bite test and move on to another flavor. I also think the minis are perfectly frosted and while the full-size goes a bit overboard with frosting. Standouts: Chocolate Mint, Blueberry Cheesecake, Cookies and Cream read more

3.5 stars Dots is a lovely establishment. This store was beautiful and service was nice and sweet like they're desserts. This is a nice business but it didn't stick out to me among the vast array of the gourmet cupcake shops that have taken over EVERYWHERE. I remember enjoying all the cupcakes, except the Fleur de sel, which I was looking forward to but it turned out to be underwhelming. The rest were delicious however. Just another gourmet cupcake shop... A-OK. read more

OK cupcakes in a small little shop, I stopped by while in the area and ordered a box of a dozen minis to take home. The family wasn't very impressed with the flavor variety I chose. I ate maybe 4 or 5, while we probably threw out the last remaining 3-4. read more

Dots Cupcakes ARE better than Sprinkles. And they are cheaper too! I really like how you can get regular-sized cupcakes and/or mini-cupcakes, so you don't have to feel obligated to try a huge amount of a flavor you might not even necessarily like. ($2.75/$1.50 each, respectively) Red Velvet - The ultimate. Maybe I'm biased, but their Red Velvet cupcake was the best I have ever had. Cookies & Cream - Yum.. this is my favorite ice cream flavor, so it was inevitable for me to fall in love with this cupcake as well. I haven't found another cupcake store that sells this flavor either.. great idea, dots! Chocolate Vanilla - pretty sweet, but still really good. The tiramisu cupcake looked really good too. I wanted to try a mini-sized, but there weren't any left by the time I got there since it was almost closing time. I really liked how they decorated the inside of their store. You just have to go check this place out for yourself. I will definitely stop by dots anytime I'm in the area. This lady in front of me purchased almost $100 worth of cupcakes- which tempted me to buy more cupcakes, but I resisted. However, there is no guarantee next time.. because now I know just how good they really are. :) read more

I only had a few things that I had to do when we took a quick trip down to SoCal, grabbing cupcakes is always on my list! I decided to buy a dozen regular size cupcakes and share with family since we were driving home the next day. I was really impressed with their selection, they have a really good assortment of cupcakes that are really cute AND tasty. We had a hard time choosing but we finally decided on: strawberry shortcake, red velvet, raspberry cheesecake, mint chocolate, apple pie, chocolate coconut, and I forget the rest! We had so many cupcakes! My favorites were strawberry shortcake (with REAL strawberry pieces in the cake), mint chocolate, and red velvet. The mint chocolate has these cute little round candies on top so it looks like little polka dots on the cake and the mint is subtle but really tasty. I was really happy with our cupcakes and they stood the test of a LONG drive home and being accidentally squished! They were still quite moist and soft when we finally made it home and I didn't think they were too sweet. Yum!!!! The only thing is, I didn't feel like we had friendly customer service. I felt the two associates seemed bored/annoyed and when I tried to tape the box shut (I know it has a little tab, but I was going to drive this home 400 miles away) the associate got a little grabby with the box. We were the only customers in the store and didn't feel the warm welcome. read more

I don't quite get this place. The cupcakes are solid, but people oogle over this place. What I don't like about this particular location is that there is no comfortable place to eat. They have a little nook where a few people can sit but there's no table to actually eat on. The cupcakes are good, but I don't find them to be anything better than all of the new cupcakes joints that are popping up everywhere. read more

I became a fan of DOTS! I still HATE the location on Arroyo. HATE it. Staff is never happy. But I like this one. They hired nice people who smile and they have about 20x more cupcakes available. In deliciousness order, I like the Dulce de Leche, Strawberry, Chocolate Mint, Lemon, Vanilla & Chocolate Caramel. I think they are just good enough for the price. read more

Dots used to be a solid place for me to get gifts for people I like. A cute little box of 4 cute little mini cupcakes always brightens anyone's day. But then I found ConfeXion cupcakes, and I haven't been back to dots since. The one thing I love here though is their mint chocolate cupcake! ConfeXion doesn't have that, and I love mint chip, so that's a great reliable thing dots has. Don't get me wrong--dots has great flavors: salted caramel, cookies and cream, red velvet, and other creative yummy ones. But overall their cupcakes are just not that moist, and their frosting is dry and lacking. It's still a cute place though. I like this location better than the one on Arroyo Parkway even though it's smaller. It's walking distance from my workplace and the old lady who runs it is very sweet :) read more

Ohhh, Dots how do I love thee? Let me count the Dots...Ok, so I counted, it's just one way..... chocolate cake with white frosting. Simple but delicious. With just one bite, I taste the decadence. You won't know what I mean till you try one for yourself. The magic is the Dense, moist cake with white frosting that is slightly sweet, but not too sweet. Creamy and smooth in texture. The two flavors compliment each other. The frosting does not overwhelm the moist cake. You know what I mean. Some bakeries over-do the sugar and the frosting hides the cake flavor. Usually by being to sweet. My obligation bakery every time I come to Pasadena. They have lots of flavor combos to choose from. You will find your favorite like I did. Try them all till you find your true love. I did. My review is only on my favorite. I'm loyal that way. My absolute favorite on the planet. I have yet to try a better one anywhere. And I do try others all the time. Your welcome to come visit, just do not take that last chocolate and white, please. Save it for me. I'll be in shortly. :) read more

Review #200 Initially, I hated the cupcake trend. It was so cutesy, it made me gag. The fact that sheeple kept jumping on the bandwagon was really annoying, too. Then I realized that making cupcakes instead of cake was actually easier for me to transport to events and kids really like them. And with the little paper thing, it's neater than a piece of cake. First, I've had cupcakes from Sprinkles and I wasn't impressed. It looked pretty. End of story. I was shopping in Pasadena and I saw Dots. "Don't pay attention to it, you don't need it," the rational voice said. "But you haven't had an appetite in two weeks and now that you're feeling better, you deserve it," the carb loving side of me said. So, I went for it. I had one of the red velvet and one which was chocolate topped with fleur de del caramel. The red velvet was just okay. I've had better, but the other made me want to swear. I wasn't sure if I could use profanity in a Yelp review but the first word that came to mind was the f-bomb. The prices are great, too. I could totally see grabbing a dozen of the little ones before heading to dinner with friends. Dots, I f-bomb love you! read more

Here's the weird thing. I walked in with my boyfriend into this cute cupcake store, a very sugary tiny room with adorable decorations and a case of the most delicious array of cupcakes. Behind the counter was a guy with a rather expressionless face and a hurried, small asian woman. Hm. Well, first looks could be deceiving. I then waited for them to cheerily say hello, welcome, or remark that it looked as though it could be our first time there. Instead they impatiently looked at us asking what we wanted. Other customers filed in behind us and the lady quickly said, "you don't know what you want?" and then rushed away to the next couple. My boyfriend and I look at each other, a little surprised, and finally choose four mini cupcakes. After we left, we burst out into laughter. How did a man and a grumpy little lady end up running a cupcake store? Shouldn't it be filled with youthful, fun, smiling people who love sugar and cupcakes and cute paper heart decorations? Despite the lackluster performance by those who work at Dots, the cupcakes are pretty darn good. The mini cupcakes are well priced and allow you to try many different flavors! I will definitely be coming back to pick up some more. read more

4.5 stars for this place! I would definitely give this place a 5 stars, but one of the girls that work there has a really nasty attitude. Nonetheless I will continue to come back for the cupcakes. This place by far has the best tasting cupcakes I've ever had! I've been to sprinkles, they're good but too far from where I live and too sweet. Cupcakery in Ontario just didn't hit the spot, Dolcissimo in Chino Hills, and Crumbles in Glendale were good but just weren't as good as Dots. Every time I come here I get a box of 4 regular ones or a dozen mini ones. I only come here on Saturdays because that's when they have the flavors I like. My favorite ones are: Red Velvet Vanilla Passion Fruit Raspberry lemonade Strawberry Shortcake Dulce de Leche read more

Very cute little cupcake shop with your traditional flavors and some different varieties too. I got the Fleur de Sel and a mini red velvet cupcake. If you like the sweet/salt mix, you will like this. It's a chocolate cupcake with chocolate/salt swirl. I'm not really into the sweet/salt thing but I thought this was really good and different from cupcakes I have seen at other shops. The mini red velvet was also really good. Moist, great tasting frosting. I love that you can order mini cupcakes here. They are well priced and you can taste a variety of cupcakes too without feeling gross later. Service was also very friendly. I like that! Parking was fairly easy. There are meters and there are lots. If I'm in the area, I would come here again. read more
