I hate to rain upon what is pretty much a Five Star rating parade, but I have to call it as I see it and from what I experienced. In fact it's rather frightful for me to think that Dos Amigos could be a "Woohoo" as good as it gets Mexican restaurant. The food here is good, I have no problem with that, but for Mexican falls way behind the likes of other nearby in the running Five Star Mexican restaurants such as Casa Frida and of course nowhere near that of Eduardo De San Angel.
Stuck in a strip mall, Dos Amigos is a small restaurant but decently decorated in a Mexican motif. When I entered, none of the tables were set and in order to get any sort of a greeting had to go to the counter where a young staff gentlemen was busy fooling around with the register system that was obviously of technology he either hadn't learned or was clearly above his abilities to master; I think the later. After I found a menu and took a seat I was brought the rather traditional chips and salsa, but no napkin. Having past experiences with drippy salsa of which this one, I got up and obtained one. The salsa proved to be fresh, in house made but nothing I would consider to be exceptional in either flavor or taste.
A review of their menu didn't indicate to me anything special or surprising in their offerings. Everything was pretty much common to the average Mexican restaurant. For my meal I selected the Carne Asada. When it was served, it was of good proportion, topped off by a whole roasted pepper accompanied by rice, a bean with cheese and a dab of guacamole. Again, however, not served with any eating utensils except a steak knife with which to eat or a napkin, so up I had to get again to obtain what should have been brought with my meal.
The Carne Asada had a good charred flavor, a decent texture and a good meat taste. The guacamole, what little amount there was of it, likewise of good flavor as well as did the refried bean side, but again nothing remarkable or that would cause me to think it to be anything exceptional or above average.
When I finished my meal, I noted my waiter still attempting to master the beyond his capabilities technology a cash register system, so not wanting to wait for time in eternity to pass, I got up, again, and asked for my bill while proceeded to the men's room. When I came back, still no bill. So up again and to the cash register but still no bill present. But then, after shuffling through a number of papers he handed me a bill. However, it wasn't the bill for the food I had. I called the matter to his attention, but to my surprise he insisted that it indeed was my bill. You can trust me on this. Even when drunk in the blackout section of a sex shop (don't ask for details), I'm pretty particular about and well know what goes in my mouth, so I darn well know what I ate. However, since the bill worked out to be only about a dollar less than the food I had, I merely paid it leaving an overly generous albeit undeserved tip to make up any difference. read more
