From the very first five minutes in this shop, I should have walked out the door. The atmosphere was chaotic and uncomfortable. She was rude to the customer before me, then snapped at a young boy who came in to pick up an item for his mother, telling him she had "lost it" and to come back another time. When it was my turn, I put on my dress and she immediately refused to listen to me and my family about how the dress needed to be put on in order to be buttoned. She insisted she knew best, so we followed her instructions. When she couldn't get it buttoned, she looked at me and said word for word: "you must have gained 20 pounds since you last tried on this dress. I can't do anything to it. Your only option is to get a new dress or a bigger size." I cannot even describe the emotional turmoil that caused me. With only four months before my wedding, I panicked and purchased a bigger size dress. When it arrived, she then told me it was too big and refused to do any alterations on it to make it smaller. I won't go into the further weight related insults she said to me, because they are still extremely triggering, but I will say this: no one deserves to be body shamed ever and especially not while preparing for a wedding. This experience was one of the lowest points in my planning process. Thankfully, I found a wonderful seamstress in Wayland 2 weeks before my wedding, who treated me with kindness, made the dress fit perfectly, and gave me back the confidence I had lost. Please, if you are considering going here, do your research and look at the negative reviews she already has. I truly wish I had. She is one of the meanest and most unprofessional people I have ever encountered, and I wouldn't want any other bride to go through what I did read more

I had my wedding dress altered at Doris Couture by Elvira and she did an incredible job! Her attention to detail is superb. I brought my dress to her in February in preparation for my wedding in early July. She had me in for a handful of fittings over the next few months and got everything done in plenty of time. She ensured that I felt comfortable in my dress and looked beautiful. The bustle that she added was gorgeous and easy for my bridesmaids to implement. I loved working with Elvira so much that I worked with her again for a bridesmaid dress in September. The dress was 2 inches too small for me when I received it and Elvira worked a miracle! Highly unprofessional and insults the client in the language we speak in front of us- do not recommend this place!! I came in to get an estimate for my wedding dress alterations. I have a very detailed dress and brought my bridesmaid with me to help describe the alterations that need to be done because we got the dress in Spain and her mother saw the dress and is a wedding dress designer and tailor. A few minutes into the fitting I was asked if I am planning to LOSE WEIGHT, because the dress would fit better and UNZIPPED THE DRESS TO MY UNDERWEAR and said now it looks better. My friend being a good person started to say no the dress is form fitting and doesn't need that much space. They proceeded to fight where the consultant told my friend YOU DONT SPEAK ENGLISH WELL, you don't know what you are talking about, and many more degrading insults just because she tried to describe what we were told needed to be done with the dress. I was shaking and traumatized from the experience- the most horrific experience in what was supposed to be a nice day. read more

I went to Doris' shop for my wedding dress alterations. This shop was recommended by Your Dream Bridal (where I got my dress). I cannot say enough great things about how talented Doris and her team are and how happy I am with my dress. Doris is a little more expensive than other shops, but you truly get what you pay for. In my opinion alterations for your wedding dress is not something you want to skimp on. The dress fits absolutely perfect, and Doris even made a beautiful bow for the back of my dress! She thought of everything, including adding clasps to the belt I bought and figuring out how to make the bustle look polished and put together. Doris altered my wedding dress, extensively and perfectly, in two weeks. She is AMAZING. She has been tailoring since she was 13 and her work is flawless. My dress was all lace and needed hemming; she moved the beautiful scalloped edge of the lace up so it looked like the dress had always been that length. I have a short torso and a petite frame so she had to alter the bodice of the dress in a lot and move lace edges around there too--again, it looked amazing. Her bustle loops were double strong, and she put in internal straps so my bra would stay in place. She took care of everything. Basically, if some pants of mine need a basic hem, I take them to my local drycleaners. If the shoulders or bodice or some other intricate alteration needs to be done, especially on a dress I paid a lot of money for, I take it to Doris. It's a drive for me, but worth it. Both Doris and Elvira are experts in assessing what needs to be done to make clothing fit well. They are sensitive to styles as they change, creative in problem solving and also practical. I came to Doris for alterations on a evening gown I planned to wear for a formal wedding at the Boston Harbor Hotel. They were kind, professional, understood what my needs were and they made a date for a fitting the following week. A day before the scheduled fitting it came to my attention that the wedding was that very week-end, I had confused it with another event. When I called them to give them this news, they were not in the least accusatory....they had me come in for the fitting and they worked overtime that evening to finish the gown so I was ready to wear it the following day. I'm the Mother of the Bride. I bought my dress in the same size that I tried on, therefore I knew exactly how it fit my body shape. The bridal shop recommended Doris to take up the hem and neckline at my shoulders, since they don't have an in-house tailor. When Doris saw the dress on me she said "it's not a good look" and went on and on about how I should return it or exchange it for a larger size. Since I love the dress and thought it looked awesome on me I refused to do that. I was extremely upset about the unprofessional, rude, and downright mean comments....but what made all of this worse was the unsatisfactory alteration job after 2 fittings. The hem juts out weirdly on both sides and the top is still way too loose on my shoulders. Now with the wedding just weeks away, and during the height of alterations for Prom and Wedding season, I'm frantically trying to find a tailor who can squeeze me into their busy schedule to fix my dress. Doris does AMAZING work! I was referred to her for my wedding dress alterations by a friend that grew up in Needham and I'm so glad that I was. Before I knew of Doris I had visited an alterations shop on Newbury Street and was very disappointed in the service. The seamstress had told me that she would not be able to hem the dress to maintain the way it was originally made because it would be "too hard and too expensive." Beg your pardon? Aren't you in the business of wedding dress alterations? Needless to say from that point on I knew I would be going to a different seamstress, I just didn't know where to go. I called Doris' on a Saturday morning and they told me to come right over so that she could take a look at the dress. Awesome! Doris took one look at the dress and said it would be no problem to make the alterations. I was so relieved. The dress looked perfect on the day of the wedding and there was never any concern about getting the dress finished on time. I could go on and on about how wonderful it was to work with Doris. My partner and I recenlty got married and Doris altered our dresses. Doris did amazing work on both wedding dresses. It is important to know that Doris has a LOT of customers and work she does on different alterations. The first three times we had gone for our alteration appointments we did have to wait or we were asked to come back so she could work on other emergency alterations that had come up. This was a bit concerning for us as we had arranged our apponitments and driven a half hour to pick them up. But Dorris's work in the end did make up for all the waiting time. Worst tailor ever. Went back on three separate occasions only to have her say my dress wasn't finished. Two weeks after she said it would be done and two days before the event, I still don't have it. She told me to come Tuesday night, went tuesday at 4:30, they close at 6, and the doors were already shut and lights off. She said it would be done Friday, came friday she said she hadn't started. Meticulous! I came to Doris for my wedding dress alterations and she did a magnificent job. I lost 30 lbs between purchase date and final fitting date - each time she assured me she could take the dress in and still have it look fabulous. I appreciated that she would not cut the length of the dress until I had the exact shoes I would be wearing on my wedding day. When I found the shoes, she did a fabulous job shortening the dress but leaving the train length intact. The bustling came out beautifully. The day of the wedding my bridesmaids bustled me up and I was good to go. I danced all night and never worried about the bustle coming loose or falling down. I highly recommend Doris for her attention to detail. This place is packed full of wedding dresses, and she's clearly busy. If you need traditional tailoring, she might be a great bet. I, on the other hand, just wanted a straight hem job on a dress made of stretchy fabric. She quoted me $24 and told me to come back in 10 days. When I went to pick up, she had taken out 2" of hem stitching, and said it wasn't ready and I should come back the next morning. I did, and the dress was in the exact same place in her pile that it had been when I had left. She apologized and said, "It's a hard job." But whether it was equipment, time, or ability, she couldn't get the job done and I took the dress to another tailor. read more
