This woman is a magician! She remodeled a custom-made silk velvet floor-length evening gown for me. A very challenging fabric but the work was careful, precise, and complete with no damage to a fabric that misbehaves at the first opportunity. More amazing was the remodel of a skirt from 1939--my great aunt wore it to a wedding that year and I bet it cost a fortune (that would be about $50 in those days). I needed 3" in the waist. Vintage silk and chiffon over-skirt. Layers! No extra fabric and seams in chiffon are the very devil. Perfection! And more than affordable given the delicacy and complexity of the work and the fabrics. I am wearing this to the Worshipful Company of Carpenters livery company dinner at Mansion House in London (host--the Lord Mayor) and I am going to look fabulous. THANK YOU ELVIRA, read more

I've been to Doris couture many times over the years, and I'm always so satisfied with the results. Recently I took a knit dress to be hemmed, and Elvira saw that it needed to be taken up in the sleeve length as well, and in the end it fit me better than I ever thought it would! And she was able to fit me in and rush my return date so that I could wear it to an upcoming event, which I greatly appreciated. Truly professional, and the most skilled seamstress I've ever encountered! read more

I went to Doris Couture for my wedding dress alterations and left with a mess that I am now getting cleaned up by another seamstress. I was pressured into doing a bustle that was a mess of large buttons all down my dress and upon seeing a new seamstress she immediately offered to fix 3 items I had asked about at Doris that she claimed were impossible with my dress. I would not recommend for anyone ahead of their wedding. read more

I absolutely love this place! Elvira is my go-to tailor--always kind, funny, and such a joy to see. Her work is amazing; she can truly do magic with clothes! I definitely recommend this place!! read more

From the very first five minutes in this shop, I should have walked out the door. The atmosphere was chaotic and uncomfortable. She was rude to the customer before me, then snapped at a young boy who came in to pick up an item for his mother, telling him she had "lost it" and to come back another time. When it was my turn, I put on my dress and she immediately refused to listen to me and my family about how the dress needed to be put on in order to be buttoned. She insisted she knew best, so we followed her instructions. When she couldn't get it buttoned, she looked at me and said word for word: "you must have gained 20 pounds since you last tried on this dress. I can't do anything to it. Your only option is to get a new dress or a bigger size." I cannot even describe the emotional turmoil that caused me. With only four months before my wedding, I panicked and purchased a bigger size dress. When it arrived, she then told me it was too big and refused to do any alterations on it to make it smaller. I won't go into the further weight related insults she said to me, because they are still extremely triggering, but I will say this: no one deserves to be body shamed ever and especially not while preparing for a wedding. This experience was one of the lowest points in my planning process. Thankfully, I found a wonderful seamstress in Wayland 2 weeks before my wedding, who treated me with kindness, made the dress fit perfectly, and gave me back the confidence I had lost. Please, if you are considering going here, do your research and look at the negative reviews she already has. I truly wish I had. She is one of the meanest and most unprofessional people I have ever encountered, and I wouldn't want any other bride to go through what I did read more

Love Elvira and she does such great work!! Very eager to please and they do a great job on complicated pieces to basic hems.

I had my wedding dress altered at Doris Couture by Elvira and she did an incredible job! Her attention to detail is superb. I brought my dress to her in February in preparation for my wedding in early July. She had me in for a handful of fittings over the next few months and got everything done in plenty of time. She ensured that I felt comfortable in my dress and looked beautiful. The bustle that she added was gorgeous and easy for my bridesmaids to implement. I loved working with Elvira so much that I worked with her again for a bridesmaid dress in September. The dress was 2 inches too small for me when I received it and Elvira worked a miracle! She was able to make the dress fit perfectly, even with only a half inch of fabric available within the seams. She'll be my seamstress for life! read more

I used Doris Couture to alter my dress for my daughter's wedding in 2019 - she did a beautiful job. Made alterations I didn't know were needed - the dress fit beautifully. I will be bringing her my dress for my son's wedding this spring. read more

Highly unprofessional and insults the client in the language we speak in front of us- do not recommend this place!! I came in to get an estimate for my wedding dress alterations. I have a very detailed dress and brought my bridesmaid with me to help describe the alterations that need to be done because we got the dress in Spain and her mother saw the dress and is a wedding dress designer and tailor. A few minutes into the fitting I was asked if I am planning to LOSE WEIGHT, because the dress would fit better and UNZIPPED THE DRESS TO MY UNDERWEAR and said now it looks better. My friend being a good person started to say no the dress is form fitting and doesn't need that much space. They proceeded to fight where the consultant told my friend YOU DONT SPEAK ENGLISH WELL, you don't know what you are talking about, and many more degrading insults just because she tried to describe what we were told needed to be done with the dress. I was shaking and traumatized from the experience- the most horrific experience in what was supposed to be a nice day. read more

If I could write a negative review, I would. The owner of the shop is extremely rude and disrespectful. She made rude accusations thinking I could not afford a $30 pant hemming and the $100 bill I gave to pay was fake. I would steer far away from this shop!!!!!! read more

I went to Doris' shop for my wedding dress alterations. This shop was recommended by Your Dream Bridal (where I got my dress). I cannot say enough great things about how talented Doris and her team are and how happy I am with my dress. Doris is a little more expensive than other shops, but you truly get what you pay for. In my opinion alterations for your wedding dress is not something you want to skimp on. The dress fits absolutely perfect, and Doris even made a beautiful bow for the back of my dress! She thought of everything, including adding clasps to the belt I bought and figuring out how to make the bustle look polished and put together. Can't wait for my wedding this coming September 2019! read more

Doris altered my wedding dress, extensively and perfectly, in two weeks. She is AMAZING. She has been tailoring since she was 13 and her work is flawless. My dress was all lace and needed hemming; she moved the beautiful scalloped edge of the lace up so it looked like the dress had always been that length. I have a short torso and a petite frame so she had to alter the bodice of the dress in a lot and move lace edges around there too--again, it looked amazing. Her bustle loops were double strong, and she put in internal straps so my bra would stay in place. She took care of everything. Basically, if some pants of mine need a basic hem, I take them to my local drycleaners. If the shoulders or bodice or some other intricate alteration needs to be done, especially on a dress I paid a lot of money for, I take it to Doris. It's a drive for me, but worth it. She is a genius. read more

My sister-in-law's wedding got ruined at a shop on newbury street and we were lucky enough to find Doris Couture! They were so kind and wonderful to the bride to be and made her dress look gorgeous! This was not an easy task as the dress was destroyed but they worked magic and she looked beautiful on her special day thanks to them. I also brought a dress to them and they did a perfect job! I'm so happy to find them and highly recommend them to anyone with a wedding dress or who needs an amazing tailor who is wonderful to work with! read more

I had my wedding dress altered at Doris Couture by Elvira. I really liked my wedding dress before but I absolutely loved it after it was altered. It was pricey but worth the cost. read more

Doris and Elvira were incredible to work with. I was nervous about where to take me wedding dress, there was a lot of lace and intricate embellishment, but they took such good care of the dress and fitting it exactly to my body. It looked absolutely beautiful. They also tailored a jumpsuit for my rehearsal dinner that came out stunning. I'd recommend to anyone who needs their bridal gown or anything tailored. read more

Doris altered my bridesmaid dress, and I couldn't believe that I actually looked good in a strapless! After trying all different kinds of strapless dresses and looking terrible in them, I thought that they just weren't for me, until Doris did her magic. Now I can't wait to wear it again! For a couple adjustments to make the chest area tighter and more form-fitting as well as bra pads, I paid around $70. Not bad at all. read more

There is no one better than Doris for wedding gown alteration! She is worth it. My daughter's gown was beautifully altered. I have been taking clothing to Doris' Couture for over twenty years - sophisticated evening wear, coats, suits, day-to-tay work clothing and casual clothing. Both Doris and Elvira are experts in assessing what needs to be done to make clothing fit well. They are sensitive to styles as they change, creative in problem solving and also practical. I am 5 feet tall and my clothes often need tailoring so that they fit - there is nothing I wouldn't bring to them. Highly recommended! read more

I came to Doris for alterations on a evening gown I planned to wear for a formal wedding at the Boston Harbor Hotel. They were kind, professional, understood what my needs were and they made a date for a fitting the following week. A day before the scheduled fitting it came to my attention that the wedding was that very week-end, I had confused it with another event. When I called them to give them this news, they were not in the least accusatory....they had me come in for the fitting and they worked overtime that evening to finish the gown so I was ready to wear it the following day. The workmanship was perfection, they were so wonderful to fit me in and complete my gown even though the error in a date was totally mine! I couldn't believe how lucky I was to find these incredible people!!! I guess I don't have to tell you who has all my future business! J. Lampert Chestnut Hill, Ma. read more

Doris and team are the best! Doris altered my wedding dress last year and it was beyond perfect! My family and I have brought numerous different items to Doris Couture and everything always is done on time and to the highest quality. read more

Doris did all the alterations for my wedding dress and made a custom vail! Doris knows what she is doing! She took in the dress, hemmed the bottom and added a bustle. She is definitely extremely busy so plan ahead of time! But she is amazing! read more

My family has gone to Doris for as long as I can remember. She's the best seamstress around, and very well priced. When my cousin got married and insisted that the dresses be touching the floor, it was all Doris could do not to slap her yardstick across the bride's behind. This is simply not done, and yet, Doris did it for us. And they all looked beautiful. read more

I'm the Mother of the Bride. I bought my dress in the same size that I tried on, therefore I knew exactly how it fit my body shape. The bridal shop recommended Doris to take up the hem and neckline at my shoulders, since they don't have an in-house tailor. When Doris saw the dress on me she said "it's not a good look" and went on and on about how I should return it or exchange it for a larger size. Since I love the dress and thought it looked awesome on me I refused to do that. I was extremely upset about the unprofessional, rude, and downright mean comments....but what made all of this worse was the unsatisfactory alteration job after 2 fittings. The hem juts out weirdly on both sides and the top is still way too loose on my shoulders. Now with the wedding just weeks away, and during the height of alterations for Prom and Wedding season, I'm frantically trying to find a tailor who can squeeze me into their busy schedule to fix my dress. I do not recommend. read more

Doris does AMAZING work! I was referred to her for my wedding dress alterations by a friend that grew up in Needham and I'm so glad that I was. Before I knew of Doris I had visited an alterations shop on Newbury Street and was very disappointed in the service. The seamstress had told me that she would not be able to hem the dress to maintain the way it was originally made because it would be "too hard and too expensive." Beg your pardon? Aren't you in the business of wedding dress alterations? Needless to say from that point on I knew I would be going to a different seamstress, I just didn't know where to go. I called Doris' on a Saturday morning and they told me to come right over so that she could take a look at the dress. Awesome! Doris took one look at the dress and said it would be no problem to make the alterations. I was so relieved. The dress looked perfect on the day of the wedding and there was never any concern about getting the dress finished on time. I could go on and on about how wonderful it was to work with Doris. She's a wonderful woman and an amazing seamstress!!!! read more

Very professional, detail-oriented, and kind. Doris was helpful in not only tailoring my wedding dress, but also in helping me decide which shoes to wear, what undergarments to wear, how to wear my hair, and how to accessorize. Great experience overall. Can't wait to see how the dress looks walking down the aisle (and boogying on the dance floor) in two weeks! read more

My partner and I recenlty got married and Doris altered our dresses. Doris did amazing work on both wedding dresses. It is important to know that Doris has a LOT of customers and work she does on different alterations. The first three times we had gone for our alteration appointments we did have to wait or we were asked to come back so she could work on other emergency alterations that had come up. This was a bit concerning for us as we had arranged our apponitments and driven a half hour to pick them up. But Dorris's work in the end did make up for all the waiting time. We had so many compliments on our dresses and the cost for both dresses were VERY resonable! Doris was recommended to us by serveral people at our work and therefore we knew her work would be great, and it was! *also Doris only accepts cash or check read more

Doris is a miracle worker! Doris completely changed the entire look and feel of my wedding dress, creating exactly my vision! Her skills are superb, and she is not only a seamstress, but a fashion consultant who helped me choose the right earring to compliment my dress. She spent hours meticulously replacing the lace on the dress after it was moved and altered. If you are looking for someone to give your special garment the care it deserves, take it to Doris! You won't be disappointed! read more

Very attentive to details. Re-did a poorly fitting pant suit that I had made from online retailer. They've also hemmed sequin skirts and taken in dress and pants. I highly recommend. read more

Worst tailor ever. Went back on three separate occasions only to have her say my dress wasn't finished. Two weeks after she said it would be done and two days before the event, I still don't have it. She told me to come Tuesday night, went tuesday at 4:30, they close at 6, and the doors were already shut and lights off. She said it would be done Friday, came friday she said she hadn't started. I'm sure her alterations are fine but she is unreliable and unapologetic for being so. Go ANYWHERE else! read more

Doris is amazing! Could not recommend any higher! I had a terrible experience with another tailor and had to take my dress to Doris just one week before my wedding. She was available for emergency fittings, really listened to me, and made sure my dress was right. It came out beautiful. She made me very comfortable and after an absolutely horrible experience at another tailor, she really made me at ease. Thank you Doris! read more

Doris did an amazing job tailoring my wedding dress! I got married July 2013 and was so happy with the outcome. She made sure that my dress fit well and that I was happy. My sister was married last fall and she tailored both her wedding dress and my bridesmaid dress. I was 7 months pregnant and her work was exceptional! Everyone said I looked really good. She did a great job on my sister's dress too! read more

I am sitting in the shop now just waiting for one thing on a bridesmaid dress to be fixed. She is amazing. I have taken clothes everywhere and to everyone. No one is this good. I brought 4 skirts and 3 dresses this time, and one was a silk chiffon- so kind of complicated. It took her two weeks exactly. She is absolutely slammed with the summer wedding and prom season and with good reason. She is amazing. I was sick for some time and have been taking things in over and over again, and nothing ever fits right. Doris fixed everything. I am thrilled. read more

Meticulous! I came to Doris for my wedding dress alterations and she did a magnificent job. I lost 30 lbs between purchase date and final fitting date - each time she assured me she could take the dress in and still have it look fabulous. I appreciated that she would not cut the length of the dress until I had the exact shoes I would be wearing on my wedding day. When I found the shoes, she did a fabulous job shortening the dress but leaving the train length intact. The bustling came out beautifully. The day of the wedding my bridesmaids bustled me up and I was good to go. I danced all night and never worried about the bustle coming loose or falling down. I highly recommend Doris for her attention to detail. The day I picked up my dress she had me try it on one last time and she was still fussing over small threads that were showing from the lace! read more

Doris did a wonderful bit of work on my wedding dress this past spring (2017). She fixed some wrinkles in the stitching, took up some length, trimmed the lining from under the train, and also did a magnificent bustle. It fit like a glove and was lovely. She's also very sweet, so I always looked forward greatly to our fittings. read more

Doris altered my bridesmaid dress & did a wonderful job. She called me before the blizzard to tell me it was ready 2 days early and offered to stay late so I could pick it up. She was very nice (other reviewers commented that she was not so friendly, but she's from Greece & still has a heavy accent, so that may be the reason). The service was great, the dress is beautifully tailored. It was not cheap! I would not go there for basic hems, but if you need something special altered, you can trust her. read more

Doris is simply amazing! She can take ANYTHING you need altered and make it fit perfectly! She is lovely! I have known her for years and would never go anywhere else. Doris helped me with a last minute bridesmaid dress emergency - she went out of her way to get the dress done before the big day... and she did an AMAZING job. The dress fit perfectly and looked as if I had given her all the time in the world to perfect it! Doris is friendly, quick, affordable and accurate. An awesome experience my first time there and every time since! She altered my wedding dress, then two sundresses and a pair of jeans.
