I bought my wedding dress from Vows, and because it was too big, I needed it hemmed and taken in. Dao was one of their recommended seamstresses and had availability, so I booked with her. The first appointment in July was quick--about 15 minutes--and since I'd never had a wedding dress fitting before, I assumed everything was fine and paid the deposit for the alterations.
My second appointment in August (for a September wedding) was where things went downhill. Five minutes before my scheduled time, Dao called and texted asking me to delay by 30 minutes. I told her I was already nearby and would arrive on time. When my sister and I got there, she asked again to move the appointment. I explained that I had errands afterward and needed to stick to the original time. She asked for a few minutes, and trying to be understanding, my sister and I stepped out to run a quick errand and returned within five minutes and we still waited another fifteen before she finally started. At this point, we were twenty minutes into my appointment with no fitting done.
When I tried on the dress, it was now too tight--so tight it couldn't be zipped or hooked. My sister also noticed part of the skirt was awkwardly bunched, and we realized it had been accidentally sewn to the underside of the dress. When I pointed it out, Dao grabbed scissors and cut the skirt free. It felt rushed and careless, but I tried to stay calm and give her the benefit of the doubt.
Because the dress was unzipped, it kept slipping, and when I mentioned it, she dismissed me, insisting she "knew my measurements." Every time I tried to ask a question, to make sure we were on the same page, she cut me off. It happened so often that my sister finally asked her to stop speaking over me. Dao became visibly agitated.
Things escalated when my sister tried to take a photo of the back of the dress so I could see it. Dao started shouting, saying cameras were recording her. My sister explained the photo was for my benefit, but Dao remained upset and asked if I could come back later. I told her I don't live in Waltham and couldn't return that day. She then told me I could take my dress. I asked if that meant she would refund my deposit, and she exploded again, shouting that no customer had ever asked for their deposit back.
She continued to be agitated, and we heard a young man in the back ask her to calm down. She then pulled the young man out and told us we needed to leave because her son "wasn't feeling well". We heard him say he was fine, but she insisted he wasn't. She went to the back again and eventually she returned and said she "didn't feel good working on my dress" and would refund me. I was so stunned by the entire situation that I barely spoke while she processed the refund. She framed it as an act of kindness because of all the "work" she had already done. When we left, I held it together until I got outside, then broke down in tears while calling another seamstress to see if they could help me--thankfully, one could. That seamstress immediately removed all of Dao's work and explained why none of it would have held up or provided the support I needed on my wedding day.
Dao's behavior was extremely unprofessional, and the experience was genuinely upsetting. I got married last year and only now feel ready to write about it. I would not recommend her for wedding dress alterations--or any alterations. If negative stars were possible, I would give them. read more
