The last time I went to Doris by myself, I ended up walking a new bride to her partner through back patio and being a witness to their union. I don't think the chances of being approached by complete strangers and attending a wedding are that high for others looking for a nice bar to attend, so Doris is a must see! Great happy hour with some draft beers, classic cocktails, ( $20 minimum for credit cards) and grilled cheeses. With Spring time HOPEFULLY almost here, this patio will get crowded FAST (I spied a ping pong table out there too) so get there and get a tall boy of tecate early! read more

Doris is great. It's a new bar, a couple months old at this point, and it's really really nice. the back yard is absolutely gorgeous. Prices are a bit closer to williamsburg or Clinton Hill bars, but it's a great atmosphere with great bartenders. Definitely one of the most unique bars in bed stuy, setting wise. I'd give it 4 stars instead of 5 since it's cash only (ATM downstairs), but they told me they'll eventually get a machine, and that's not enough of a reason for you to miss out on this place. Quick Q&A...Where in New York can you find a DJ spinning actual vinyls??? At Doris!!! I thought Vinyls didn't exist anymore! All you see are DJ's with laptops clicking from song to song. The 2 DJ's that were here tonight took it back to good old vinyl records in crates!!!! If you were born in the 80's or anytime before that you know exactly what I'm talking about. Now let me just say first and foremost that the DJ's were AMAZING!!! They definitely had the crowd going playing hit after hit from the 90's into early 2000's. The vibe at Doris is SUPER chill. No need to get fancy or dress up. Everyone just comes as is to dance and have a good time. They do have a backyard area which is nice. I hear that they have DJ's in a rotation so it will not be the same person every weekend. My first experience at Doris was a very positive one. I've had a few encounters with this dog man, and last night may very well be the last, period. We showed up around midnight, the place wasn't packed, but there was a coupe dozen people in there. But then the bartender, who was not exactly an intelligent or capable person, forgot what I ordered, so I told him a second time that I wanted a whiskey on the rocks. If I can describe Doris in one word it would be: bar. Seeing how that doesn't help you get a good idea of what to expect, you'll have to read more than one word. In fact I encourage you to read my entire review, which has many words. I'm sorry if it hurts your brain. Doris is a fun, cool bar located on Fulton Street. They specialize in cocktails. Have a good draft selection. Serve great bottled beers and wine. When you first come in you notice the whole Texas theme. Cacti, cowboy hat, Spurs jersey, fake cow skull, some guy giving a five year old a guy. Alright I'm joking about the last part, but it would fit the theme. Apparently the owner is a Texas native and many of the workers are from there as well. To my understanding most of them are from the San Antonio/Austin areas, where I've had awesome times at. So I trust them. The cocktails from the places are pretty good. If you have a request, they'll make most known drinks for you. The cocktail menu though might not be the most appealing to you if you're not familiar of obscure liquors. They try a lot of different things here on the menu, but as I mentioned if you know what you like they'll whip it up for you. Unless it's some made up drink your grandmother told you about when you were seven. (Oh why did she do that to me?) The taps were good, I didn't love them but good. I thought their selection of bottled beers were great and my date liked the selection of wine. Happy hour is from 1-8, which is amazing of course. Sit back and chill out in this awesome establishment. It brings a great vibe. As I mentioned, I enjoy the funky Texas decor. The inside is nice and lit by candle light. They have records playing some good jams. Outback is real nice as well. I have to say though, they should provide some bug spray for their patrons. Many bars that have bugs in the back (especially mosquitoes) have some kind of spray or candles that deal with the bug problem. Last time there, we left the back within three minutes. I was being eaten alive like I was playing soccer against Luis Suarez. (Yes i made a soccer joke, what are you gonna do about it) Every other group of people who went outside after us did the same thing, came right back inside within a few minutes. There is a one easy to use bathroom upstairs. The rest are way downstairs in what is a super secluded area. Perfect in case Brooklyn is attacked by nuclear weapons. There isn't much food available, they were more snacks. One time there however, a gentlemen was coming in selling Californian style burritos and tacos at a good price. I never partook and have no idea how often this guy is there, but maybe you want to do some investigating yourself. The place is cash only, but if you're still complaining about that, kill yourself. Can't say enough good things about this new gem in Bed-Stuy. Drinks: Full bar with a great selection of interesting beers and wine (including wine on tap). Their specialty cocktails are delicious as well (best margarita I've had in months!). Ambience: Feels very cozy and comfortable. Soft lighting and candles everywhere, giving it a really warm and inviting vibe. I've been there on weeknights just having chill drinks in a booth with friends and have also been there late on a Friday night, when they usually have a DJ or are playing vinyl. Both have been great times. Outdoor area: Man, I am a sucker for a great outdoor area. They have a huge backyard with tons of tables, great lighting (see some of the other reviewer's photos), lots of plants, and a ping pong table. Overall: This is one of my new favorite bars. If you live in the Bed-Stuy area it's a revelation, as it's a great bar in a neighborhood that sorely lacks great bars. But even if you live in another part of Brooklyn or Manhattan it's worth the trip. This place is special. read more

We have been really excited to try this bar ever since we noticed that it popped up around the corner. We were really excited by the decor! The first time we go the bartender accuses one of us of stealing his tips. My friend explained that she had already been holding the money and he tried to guilt her that he would have to take it from his pocket. Just because you want to pay in singles doesn't mean it's from the tips. Before this stand out incident he was pretty rude to us already. Basically ruined our time there and we had to leave. I go to a lot of bars. Or maybe I go to the same few bars I like a lot. Either way, I randomly found myself at this newish bar one day this summer. From the outside, it kind of made me think I was about to head into New Mexico - maybe it was the white stucco and the round windows? What ever it was, when I walked in, it was not at all what I was expecting. First of all, it was DARK. I might have been wearing sunglasses when I first stepped in but even after I took them off I still couldn't see worth a damn. It was like going back in time to a candlelit monastery. The place also strongly smelled of grilled cheese sandwiches. I don't know if this is good or bad because grilled cheese sandwiches are technically delicious but I'm not sure that's what I really want to smell like after leaving a bar. Also, bars could smell of much worse. MUCH worse. Artisanal pickles are also available (this is, after all, Brooklyn). After blindly pawing our way to the bar and deciphering the menu first by candlelight then by cellphone flashlight, we picked a couple of ok-but-not-great beers. The prices were acceptable if maybe $1 over what I would have expected for the neighborhood. With beers in hand, we headed outside. The outside is fantastic. It was a magical hipster garden in the scummy urban landscape of Fulton Street. I didn't know such a place could exist. The could probably throw up a hammock and it would be heaven in Brooklyn. There were big, beautiful trees; plenty of seating, a ping pong table (!) and everything was pretty darn clean. People watching is also pretty good. I'm an old lady so when I look around, I just chuckle at all the unfortunate clothing and hair choices that young people make these days. There are few things I like more than a new neighborhood bar that will be serving food. I stopped in to checkout Doris on a weeknight and was pleasantly surprised. The decor is interesting with lots of cacti, and quite large with an outdoor space and multiple bathrooms downstairs. My two friends and I sat at the bar. Upon arrival around 5-6, we were nearly the only patrons sipping indoors, though by the time we left around 9, the place was packed with a hipsterish crowd. I was a little confused because I had read that day was the official opening, but it didn't feel like such. And there was no light show (that was also in the random article I read). Nonetheless, I will be back. Doris is super close to my apartment, the drinks are very well priced and I'm curious to try the food once they start serving. Like any true Brooklyn foodie, there are few things I enjoy more than drinking and eating good food. Four stars for the drinking experience and space. read more

I had heard in passing that a new bar opened on Fulton. So when a friend and I decided to meet up for an early drink, I was open to check it out. I will admit that Doris is quite easy to pass by without realizing that it's there. The entrance is pretty nondescript. With that said, you'll be happy once you find it. The inside is really cute including perfectly mellow lighting. They had on some grooves background music and my made to order margarita was infused with flavor, liquor and love. Unfortunately the day that I went, it was raining, which means I was unable to lounge abut in the very nice outdoor area. I definitely need to come back for that. I ended up not sticking round for more than 1 drink on my first visit as the vibe, though really cool and likely perfect for a first date, was a bit too laid back for that particular day for my friend and I. For me, a nice spot to drink solo or with a friends is a luxury and one of things that can make a new neighborhood quickly transition into a home. Thank you, Doris, for not looking like other Brooklyn bars. Why is it that so many new/newish BK bars look the same inside? It's like there's one guy designing bars the way it seems there's one guy designing the Thai restaurants in NYC. The white adobe wall in the back and the macramé hangings remind me of the Spanish-style bungalows of my childhood life in Los Angeles. It's nice breath of different. Doris is an all around good bar. All of the speciality cocktails I've had, I've loved. El Supremo is my favorite! New Mexico type vibe- the white walls and dim lights keep it feeling open but cozy. Not a ton of room to sit inside, but when it's warm enough and the outdoor area in the back is open, it's fantastic! Also the grilled cheeses there are to die for. Best memory here is a few years ago they were open during a snow storm and all public transportation was suspended. My roommate and I walked a .5 miles here in snow up to our knees which took an hour. Friends joined us from nearby crown heights. I've been a regular at Doris for nearly two years. It's backyard has served as my home away from home for nearly two years (not having a backyard of my own). However, after today I will find it hard to go back. I had a friend in town and wanted to show him some of the neighborhood faves. After a great dinner at Speedy Romeos we decided to stop in Doris for a nightcap. Or not. The bouncer refused to let us in. Why? Imagine, me or you or any likable woman, in a sleek, 1920s wedding gown, strutting her way down Fulton street. In Bed-Stuy?!! It was a bit unthinkable to me too, until I met Doris' stunning outdoor area. At first glance, I said, "We can have a happy hour here," but then I began to imagine a wedding: simple mid-sized (for Bed-Stuy), two and a half blocks away from my house, serene and beautiful. Its unexpected magnificence will grab your attention and make you hold your breath, and by the time you're ready to exhale, the bartenders here will have a phenomenal margarita with cointreau ready for you to gulp or nurse. I suggest nursing because they're pleasantly stiff. A cash only bar, but at least has the convenience of an ATM downstairs. Even though I live pretty close by, and it's a hop, skip and a jump from the Franklin C stop, Doris never really became a regular spot for me. Sure, they have a great backyard, a decent happy hour ($5 draught beer, $2 off other stuff) that even runs for extra long on weekends, a solid drink selection, music from a wide selection of vinyl, chill bartenders, cool gold matchbooks, micheladas, and a hip southwest inspired interior that I can't be mad at. But, they also had a fatal flaw (for me at least) - being cash only.... I recently decided to pop by after work just to shake things up a bit. I sat at the bar. Ready to order a drink. My fists of cash ready to go. There were a couple people who had just ordered so I waited patiently, only to be floored moments later after witnessing the person who just got their drinks paying WITH A CREDIT CARD. WAT!? I searched the bar - credit card machine, spotted. Along with a pile of cards from other like minded folk who were, no doubt, also relishing this moment. So yeah, good job Doris. Welcome to the present. I can't not mention the fact that they also have food from my favorite grilled cheese truck, Morris Truck. Will definitely be stopping by a bit more often. read more

I love Doris. Indoors and outdoors there is a nice variety of comfortable seating. A great selection of beers, and cocktails for those who prefer, and super-nice bartenders. The disc jockeys are great, notably in that they actually jockey discs; a row of vinyl stacks above the bar is impressively diverse and current (notably the recent Analog Africa Senegal comp). I eschewed the free water I sometimes opt for when I see shows at other bars (for some tasty Lagunita's IPAs), but I always appreciate the option. I would love to play ping pong the next time I go, as my record has now increased to 2-0 over the past 28 years, and I'd like to continue my roll. It got really busy, but throughout the night, people in the back tables in the backyard had plenty of space. Back yard is quieter (music-wise) and a great space. Only two demerits were: $12 for what I thought was a mediocre margarita (printed menus also said $11, which is no longer true). But the GREAT ginger beer made for a fantastic dark and stormy (for $10 or $11) that more than made up for it. And 2, the main bartender was totally blank and stoic. Not overtly rude, but not connecting at all. I know that's a lot to ask when you're alone behind the bar on a busy Saturday, but it was also true early in the night with 4 ppl at the bar.
