Went here for dinner with a friend. Host made her wait at the bar until my arrival. I arrived shortly after and the host reprimanded me for arriving more than 5 minutes following her. After our dinner, we stayed chatting, perhaps maybe 10-15 minutes after we paid our bill. There were multiple empty tables around us, yet the host came up to us, grabbed the bill and mumbled something about us leaving due to someone needing the table. He lacked customer service and kindness. I can recognize that the restaurant may need the table, but one can do it in a respectful and kind way. I ordered the calamari and shrimp fritto! I loved the crunchy ness of the dish without making the seafood rubbery. The server brought complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I looked at all the pizza options and I asked which they recommended. Well they have a pizza called the Doppio Zero for a reason! Their signature pizza, so it was a must to try! I would repeat this order over and over. We ordered the Pulpo, Doppio Zero pizza, and squid ink pasta. 10/10 would recommend all three! The polpo (octopus) was tender, just enough lemon and the arugula balanced the flavors. The pizza had a perfect charr on the crust, and the burrata and prosciutto were so fresh. The pasta was perfectly cooked al dente. Plus, the pasta had a good amount of shellfish. We visited this place after almost 2 years and I'm sad to say the standards have dropped. There used to be long lines outside this place and the fact that we got a table as soon as we walked in prime time dinner time on a Friday evening should have been an indication. Walking the strip in search of a great place to eat & stumbled upon Doppio...thankfully! Big party and we were seated within 10 minutes. Our waitress wasn't the best at speaking English, but she tried her hardest to keep up and reached out to other employees as needed. We ordered quickly and the food didn't take too much longer to come out. Definitely on the pricier side of things. I ordered the 5 formaggi pizza, which was good but not outstanding or anything. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their food though. The seafood soup was packed and super filling to include the Brussels sprouts tasting beyond amazing. Almost couldn't stop eating them! We requested for outside seating where we could easily park our stroller (yes, we have a new entry in our household). I'm surprised by my experience at Doppio Zero considering they were on the Michelin list in 2019. We came on a Saturday night and somehow got seated without reservations. Unfortunately, the music inside was just way too loud for an Italian restaurant, it almost felt more like a club than a nice restaurant. In terms of food, we shared the margherita pizza and the delizia pasta (vegetarian fettucine in a white wine sauce). The food came out fairly quickly but wasn't really up to standards. The margherita pizza was so soggy that all the cheese and sauce practically fell right off as soon as we picked it up. It definitely seemed undercooked, which is strange considering this place is known for their pizza. The pasta was okay, but nothing special. Unfortunately, nothing about this meal felt very authentic or high quality. 3/28/21 I think this was one of my longest bookmarked restaurants... pretty much every coworker from my work, 3 jobs ago, when they found out I eat out a lot in the area--they said come here. So, I think coming into this my expectations were just too high. For the most part everything here was good to great (except that fried calzone which was NASTY), but I guess I was just hoping the pizza would be mind blowing, and it ain't. The undisputed king of fancy Italian pizza is still Pizzeria Mozza in LA in my mind... 1. Almanac Loud! Hazy Dipa $7 "8.0% ABV hazy double India pale ale double dry-hopped with mosaic, cashmere and simcoe": Sorry, can't remember the details. But the description sure sounded crazy! 2. Pizza Napule $18 "fried pizza filled with smoked fior di latte mozzarella, ricotta cheese, tomato sauce, Italian salami, ham, black pepper": Yeah, so here's that fried calzone mentioned above. Fried pizza it says--FRIED PIZZA!!!... no way I would pass that up! What it actually was was a maybe slightly more buttered calzone crust (not crisp in any fashion whatsoever) wrapped around.... a dripping soggy mess of half digested cheese curds and boiled preserved meats. You know how sometimes you vomit up clear liquid with half digested white stuff mixed in?--that's what it resembled in appearance, and didn't taste any better either. Clearly that ricotta cheese was a BAD idea, with far too much water content. Probably the wrong kind of mozzarella too, again with far too much water content. How an Italian restaurant could serve something this bad is beyond me. 1/10 3. Margherita Red Pizza $15 Add Arugula $2 (charged only $16.50) "san marzano tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano, basil": Yeah, so, alright I might be a bit biased here cause I HATE arugula and the thing was piled with it. Pretty much a salad on bread. But anyway, my friends ordered this so... that's that. Crust was good. What cheese and sauce I could find underneath the bitter hell of grass was good too. I dunno, it's hard to judge, but I will say that an arugula pizza from Pizzeria Mozza is far tastier (probably cause it's loaded with 10x the fat and olive oil, but fat is flavor!). Crust isn't comparable though--it's good, but side by side with the bubbly genius that is Mozza just makes it look average to me. 7/10 4. Spaghetti Al Nergdi Sepia $22: Now this is delicious. I've had squid ink pasta from so many places, and hell, even my gf has made a dozen variations at home, and this easily was the best tasting I've ever had of the genre! That said, they cheated. Yes, they CHEATED. So, the sauce they used is indeed inky, cause just check out my pics--sooooo black. BUT, their pasta does not contain squid ink (or at least I don't think it did, correct me if I'm wrong.) So, the thing is, normally the ink changes the texture of the pasta in negative ways, taking away from that crisp al dente texture when cooked perfectly. Thus, it takes real skill to cook a good squid ink pasta. But just using ink in the sauce gives you 90% of the taste but avoids all the texture and cooking problems. So while this tastes the best, unfortunately I cannot say they played fairly. 10/10 5. Croquette $11 "potato croquette with gruyere cheese, parmesan cheese, leeks, parsley, served with truffle fondue": Crisp exterior, creamy cheesy interior. The sauce is thin but balances the flavor well. 9/10 6. Truffle French Fries $7 "shoes [their spelling] strings fries with truffle oil": The truffle flavor is super mild. The fries themselves could be crispier on the outside and more meaty on the inside. Probably too skinny to be great. 5/10 7. Limoncello Cake $10 "a combination of Sicilian lemon infused sponge cake and Italian mascarpone topped with European white chocolate curls": Sorry don't remember this. But I do want to ask--do European white chocolate curls taste different than American ones? 8. Came to Doppio Zero for lunch with my colleagues and we had a wonderful time. The ease of getting a reservation was nice and the atmosphere is very welcoming. We were seated inside and the staff was very attentive to our needs and orders. They are doing the virtual menu/barcode scans which makes it easy for all of us to look at the menu from our phones. Food came out in a reasonable time from ordering and everything was cooked really well. Our table ordered the following: Calamari and Shrimp - Hot and Crispy with a zesty sauce to complement these tiny bites Truffle French Fries - Crispy and just the right amount of truffle oil for a perfect balance. Delizia - Fettucine, veggies, in a white wine sauce was well balanced and seasoned. Melanzane Alla Parmigiana - Basically their eggplant parm and it was delicious. The portion size was perfect, not oversized but still enough to decide to take home the rest. Ravioli - Spinach ravioli with cheese and mushrooms in a truffle sauce. Done really well. Excellent place for a date night or to take friends/family who come to town! Here's what we ordered: Fungo pizza (5/5): The dough (for all pizzas) is just divine. Soft with a perfectly crispy slightly charred crust! Mortadella (3.5/5): Seemed like a good pairing of toppings but for some reason it was just OK in comparison to the other 2. Margherita (5/5): My favorite. We added prosciutto for an extra $5, worth it!! Calamari (4/5): Solid dish, not anything super special though. Espresso martini (5/5): Pretty and just the right amount of everything. We've sat indoors and outdoors - it can get noisy and a bit crowded indoors but it's very pleasant sitting outdoors when the weather is nice (which is most of the time anyway!). They lost our order but they apologized and it came out relatively fast. I love Dopio zero! The staff is great. The place is big with comfy and romantic indoor seating with a beautiful big wood fire oven and also plenty of space outside. They now have a big tent outside which is really cool. The food never disappoints. I love their wood fire oven pizzas. It's just so good and fresh with the perfect crust. The crust is thin. I love the Margarita the best as it's the pure taste of pizza, tomatoes and the absolute right amount of cheese. I also love their appetizers like the brussel sprouts and the truffle fries. Everything is amazing here. The only thing I'm still trying to decipher is when you get complimentary bread with vinegar and oil to dip in. I got it the first few times I came here, but then never again - initially I thought because of the pandemic, but then the neighboring tables would always get some. The bread is really good, that's why I'm jealous... The food is served pretty quickly which is great but then again not. I have the feeling they (want to) have a high turnover rate - even on less busier days which makes sitting and chatting and eat slowly a little hectic. We had a great time celebrating our friend's birthday at Doppio Zero this past weekend. They were extremely patient while taking orders for our large group, helped take photos & even helped bring our birthday cake out. Of course, the food was amazing. Best pizza in the bay area and I'll say that with my whole chest. I love that it comes with free bread with olive oil & balsamic. The small plates we got were: salad, meatballs, truffle fries (shoestring), and calamari. All delicious. Parking is pretty easy in castro. Lots of street parking and parking lots. I only have amazing things to say about this restaurant! When I first walked in I was slapped in the face with the amazing smells of fresh pasta and pizza. The family oriented atmosphere created a nice peaceful touch which allowed for a pleasant interaction with my friends. Upon entry I was deterred by the long line but was thrilled when I was sat within 3 mins. Overall, I was extremely impressed with my Margherita pizza it was lite crispy and the sauce and cheese was perfect. It breaks my heart to write this review but this restaurant single handedly tanked our engagement dinner. Doppio zero had been my favorite restaurant on Castro St. I've been there several times with friends, and coworkers, and always had a decent meal. This was not the time. My fiance planned a surprise proposal with a reservation ad Doppio Zero because he knows how much I liked it. He specified in the reservation that we were recently engaged and celebrating it. We literally got there within about 30 mins of our engagement. Not only did we not get any acknowledgment, they said they didn't even know if they had a table for us. WHAT? we have a reservation! My fiance let them know we had a reservation and specified a celebration. They finally seated us and our server was brusque and short with us all night. Our food came out consistently cold and they were taking plates away before we could even finish. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Neither of us are from the Bay area so we didn't have a big group to celebrate with in person since we're pretty new here. So to have such a horrible first outing when celebrating something so happy was upsetting to us both. My fiance knew how sad I was by how the evening went, so he made a reservation the following night at Cucina Venti in Mountain View and literally wrote the exact same thing in the reservation. When we arrived they had roses, a placard, and gave us a complimentary dessert. Doppio Zero pizza has a nice thin crust and yummy crafted feeling to it. It is awesome! My husband and I were dining here for the first time. We've had an appetizer Burata cheese with some tomatoes and eggplants. Sadly, the bread arrived after we've finished it. Then pizzas arrived! They were great actually. The mushroom pizza had real mushrooms on it. Even though it was more expensive than I'd like it to be, it was really good. Four cheeses pizza was also amazing. They agreed to make it with red sauce, which was very nice of them. Pizza's dough is really tasty. You can see the burn from the oven. It adds to the taste and so pizzas are awesome. I do agree with some of these other reviews. The pizza was kinda soggy. I was expecting a more flavorful pizza since the other reviews praised the margherita and the one I ordered, La Picante, seemed like a margherita pizza but with meat on out. I didn't try the pasta but my friend enjoyed it, so I'd probably go with that next time. They had really great service. My friend has a gluten allergy and the people were super accommodating. My friend was getting an itchy tongue and after we told them, they immediately remade it and ensured there was no gluten. The place is nice - dim and rustic-like. Can be kinda loud. read more
