Rough, heavy "Swedish massage" resulting in broken capillaries and inflammed, sore skin. Sketchy…read moretipping and payment, with extra fees for using a credit card. Hopefully our experience gives others an idea of what to expect. I wish I had read the other Yelp Reviews before we went to Zen Spa. Other people have experienced the same roughness in their massages, and the same coerciveness with tipping and payment. Swedish Massage I booked a massage for my 20+ old son. He is an athlete and has had many massages at other spas, including deep issue/sports massage. When we arrived, the "therapist" suggested a 90-minute session for $110. For today, my son did not want a deep tissue massage so I asked her to confirm that this session would be Swedish and he could tell her to make the pressure as light as he wanted. She confirmed yes. Payment and 30% (or higher) "Suggested Tipping" When it was time to pay, she asked me to hand her my credit card, and then as she initiated the payment, she asked how much I wanted to tip. Since it was a $110 session and I customarily tip 20%, I said "$22". However, she did not just add $22. She pointed to a printed sign that listed "Suggested Tips for a $110 session" and the smallest suggested tip was $30. This is a 27% tip, far above customary. In all other businesses I've dealt with, I am the one to tap my credit card, and I can privately enter whatever amount of tip that I choose. But at Zen Spa, the therapist held my credit card hostage while asking me to tell her how much I wanted to tip, as if it was a set amount obligation and not the client's choice to show appreciation for good service. I was taken aback by how presumptuous she was, but decided that I would just tip the 27% and be done with it. The payment should have been $110 for the service plus $30 for the tip, for a total of $140. However, the receipt total said $142. I pointed to the sign that said the 90-minute Swedish massage was $110, so the total should have been $140. She kept insisting that her total was correct, and only after I kept asking did she point to a different sign that said that there was a $2.00 fee for using a credit card. My guess is that they were passing on the credit card companies' fees to the client, but they didn't want to change the published price list, so they created a smaller sign that said that there would be a $2.00 extra fee. Really deceptive. Rough Massage and Broken Capillaries After we left, I asked my son how it went. He said it was a terrible experience. We understand that there may be bruising or redness, but he has never had that with deep tissue massages at other places. But at Zen Spa, with a supposedly "Swedish massage," the woman was so rough with her hands and a tool -- perhaps a massage roller -- that he had to tell her to lighten up. The result of all the roughness is a back full of broken capillaries and inflamed skin (see photos attached). This is not normal. Less important, and rather funny, was that the spa room smelled like garlic. This place was definitely not peaceful and zen. One positive thing I can say about the spa is that they take precautionary safety measures because of the neighborhood. Another therapist/owner said that they lock the doors to the building when they are in sessions because "there are lot of bad boys" in the area.

The atmosphere was very calming as they could dim the lights and there was faint music playing. My mom had gotten a certificate for this place by one of her customers and didn't have time to get a massage so she gave it to me. I had completely forgotten about it until the day it was about to expire so I had to make an appointment the same day it was going to expire but they were very nice about it and were able to squeeze me in and did not make any fuss about it (which I appreciate because I totally get how annoying that can be). When I got there the guy was very nice and remembered my appointment. The place was very clean, which I definitely appreciate in the current climate, and it smelled like fresh laundry. They made my first experience great and were extremely professional and sweet :)

To set the scene: imagine an open room with curtains separating the beds. Initially there's chairs for foot massages, then there are tables for the full body massages. There isn't much privacy. Because there aren't any walls, you can hear everything and the massage therapists had a lot to say to each other. The massage was very nice. They are very thorough. Not only did they knead every piece of my body, but they stretched me out as well. They even used the hot stones to work out kinks even further. I will say, the lack of walls did cause me a bit of unease, and 50 min into a 60 min massage my therapist changed from a woman to a man. They then offered 30 additional minutes which we took for the relaxation. I knew right then cost was going to get funky. The extra 30 minutes included a foot massage, which I hadn't experienced one as complex as that. When it was time to check out, 30 minutes for two came up to $80 additional dollars. When I tried to point out the Groupon cost the lady made it out like I was getting a deal. I was not. With tip, I spent double what I expected. Was it worth it, you ask. Meh. And yes, I know I should've gotten the price beforehand or stuck to the original 60 min plan. But it's Father's Day and I wanted to pamper my husband. Massage: 20 stars. Business model 1 star. Average: 3 stars

Even when I'm traveling and get a massage somewhere else, it never compares to the quality and care I receive at Serenity. Rozzie and Jose are both incredible at what they do. They don't just give you a standard massage and send you on your way. They take the time to really understand your needs, ask what has been bothering you, and focus on the areas that need the most attention. You can tell they genuinely care about helping their clients feel better. Rozzie has been amazing at helping me with the tension and discomfort from my neck injuries. She knows exactly where to focus and somehow always works her magic. I leave feeling such a difference! Jose is phenomenal when it comes to deep tissue massage. He really knows how to work out the knots and get into those areas that need extra attention. My sister lives out of state, and every single time she comes to town, she makes sure to schedule an appointment with Jose because she says she cannot find anyone where she lives who even compares to his skills! After more than 8 years of coming here, I can confidently say Serenity Massage is in a league of its own. Rozzie and Jose are incredibly skilled, attentive, and genuinely care about what each client needs. If you're looking for more than just a relaxing massage and want someone who really listens to your body and addresses what's bothering you, I cannot recommend them enough!

They had the "ring" ringing every-time someone was at the door and the phone's ringtone when someone called which is not pleasant or relaxing at all during a massage. I will give them credit because the massage was probably the best my husband and I have ever had. But my husband was not happy at all with the customer service either. They did hot stones as well which was so incredible. So I give them credit for that. But when we were getting ready to leave they asked me how much tip and I said $15 each and she said can you do more you know it's Christmas maybe $20 each, which obviously put me in an awkward situation to have to tip more than deserved due to the lack of customer service.
