Rough, heavy "Swedish massage" resulting in broken capillaries and inflammed, sore skin. Sketchy tipping and payment, with extra fees for using a credit card. Hopefully our experience gives others an idea of what to expect. I wish I had read the other Yelp Reviews before we went to Zen Spa. Other people have experienced the same roughness in their massages, and the same coerciveness with tipping and payment. Swedish Massage I booked a massage for my 20+ old son. He is an athlete and has had many massages at other spas, including deep issue/sports massage. When we arrived, the "therapist" suggested a 90-minute session for $110. For today, my son did not want a deep tissue massage so I asked her to confirm that this session would be Swedish and he could tell her to make the pressure as light as he wanted. She confirmed yes. Payment and 30% (or higher) "Suggested Tipping" When it was time to pay, she asked me to hand her my credit card, and then as she initiated the payment, she asked how much I wanted to tip. Since it was a $110 session and I customarily tip 20%, I said "$22". However, she did not just add $22. She pointed to a printed sign that listed "Suggested Tips for a $110 session" and the smallest suggested tip was $30. This is a 27% tip, far above customary. In all other businesses I've dealt with, I am the one to tap my credit card, and I can privately enter whatever amount of tip that I choose. But at Zen Spa, the therapist held my credit card hostage while asking me to tell her how much I wanted to tip, as if it was a set amount obligation and not the client's choice to show appreciation for good service. I was taken aback by how presumptuous she was, but decided that I would just tip the 27% and be done with it. The payment should have been $110 for the service plus $30 for the tip, for a total of $140. However, the receipt total said $142. I pointed to the sign that said the 90-minute Swedish massage was $110, so the total should have been $140. She kept insisting that her total was correct, and only after I kept asking did she point to a different sign that said that there was a $2.00 fee for using a credit card. My guess is that they were passing on the credit card companies' fees to the client, but they didn't want to change the published price list, so they created a smaller sign that said that there would be a $2.00 extra fee. Really deceptive. Rough Massage and Broken Capillaries After we left, I asked my son how it went. He said it was a terrible experience. We understand that there may be bruising or redness, but he has never had that with deep tissue massages at other places. But at Zen Spa, with a supposedly "Swedish massage," the woman was so rough with her hands and a tool -- perhaps a massage roller -- that he had to tell her to lighten up. The result of all the roughness is a back full of broken capillaries and inflamed skin (see photos attached). This is not normal. Less important, and rather funny, was that the spa room smelled like garlic. This place was definitely not peaceful and zen. One positive thing I can say about the spa is that they take precautionary safety measures because of the neighborhood. Another therapist/owner said that they lock the doors to the building when they are in sessions because "there are lot of bad boys" in the area. read more

Hi. I had great experience there today with my bf. We did a couple's massage. The massage therapist decorated the room for my bf's birthday. They started promptly and massaged all my pressure points. I run a lot and have a lot of foot issue and the pain is currently gone. I'm very pleased and I will actually be coming back. Thank you for such a great experience. My boyfriend enjoyed his as well. Massage was dry, not enough moisture (oil, lotion, etc.) while rubbing, so too much friction...that's not relaxing. She Coughed several times then put her hands in my face around my nose/eyes; I don't understand why bc I'm only aware of temple/scalp rub during full body massage, unless I'm getting a facial. I was forced to give a 25% tip when I only wanted to give 20% since it wasn't a satisfying experience. read more

Had a great massage yesterday by Tina, very strong hands. My hip was killing me, having trouble walking and sitting. So much better today. She can feel where the pain is, and goes after it. She has to get deep in the tissue, but so worth it. read more

I ended a long and stressful year with a massage. I deserved it. I found them on Groupon & was able to pay in person + tip. Massage was great, I can't believe an hour went by that fast. It was a little out of my preferred radius but I can definitely refer friends to this location. The ladies take request if you need attention to one specific area. I was there on Tuesday to get a to get a massage, before my flight home. When in walk the owner's boyfriend and a contractor were yelling and cursing at each other relentlessly. The contractor told the owner's boyfriend that he could not complete the job, unless he put a steel box in between the light unit any electrical wires. It was not safe and would not pass code. The owner's boyfriend kept telling the contractor to just shut the F-ed up and install the box it doesn't matter nobody's going to look in the ceiling it's not a fire hazard who cares. It was one of the worst and scariest experiences of my life! The contractor walked out and so did I. I will never return to this place, and I do not recommend anybody to go there. read more

I'll never go back to this place. I schedule a couples massage for 2 pm. When we got there, the "receptionist" took us to our room and left us alone to prepare for the "masseuses." When no one showed up within the first 5 mins, I figured it must take longer to prepare for a group massage. (Even though we've done couples massages before, and that's never been a reason to start late. Then 10 mins passed, and I wondered if they had forgotten about us. At 12 mins, I put my shorts back on and popped my head towards the front desk, where I heard endless chatter. I make eye contact with the same receptionist and ask, "did you forget to tell anyone we're in here" I shit you not; while eating a bag of chips, she waves me off to get back into the room and states, "that is the owner's XYZ." ( I got the first part but didn't make out who she said the person was to the owner) but that made no difference with me. WTF does the owner's XYZ have to do with us aimlessly waiting around? I head into the room, and I'm replaying that interaction in my head " no apology, no concessions, and pretty much waved me off as if I interrupted her conversation." To my surprise, the same rude receptionist was also doubling as my masseuse. They begin the massage, and I patiently wait about 2 minutes before mentioning "is someone going to close the door while we both lay here completely naked." The same receptionist seemed annoyed that I even mentioned this. And that's when I told myself if one more thing happens we're leaving. After jumping off of me in a frustrated manner she closed the door and immediately starts speaking Japanese to the other masseuse. Now I'm contemplating the -Hallway Interaction -No hand washing of before starting --So those damn chips off were still on her fingers -The door being left open while we lay there naked -Now she's speaking in my damn ear, in a language I can't understand -And to top it off, the receptionist (or whatever her role is) SUCKED as a masseuse -It felt like she was trying to give me back CPR Let me end by saying I've been going to this place for years. I've never had to put my clothes back on after undressing because the masseuse took so long. And I've never just walked out mid-massage because the overall service was terrible. But that's what happened I walked in looking to relieve stress and walked out 5 mins into the massage feeling more stressed than I was when I entered. I hate to write a bad review for this place, but after two tries- I just can't stay silent. I feel bad for the masseuse I had because I am pretty positive that this might not be her fault but that of the manager. So here go the common occurrences from the two times I've come. 1. No hand washing before starting, this includes that on both occasions my masseuse left the room and answered the phone and/or processed a payment- not to be OCD but I'd prefer to not have those germs transferred to my naked body. Just sayin... 2. Both times there were interruptions, aka- the phone call, the person who walked in, and the processing of a payment for another client. This meant a disruption in my "relaxation" in addition to cutting into the time that I am paying for. 3. The massages were not consistent- one time I had hot stones the other time I didn't and was then told I should have said something, I would think that if it was offered in the service and there was a need to request that the masseuse would offer it so that I could then decide. 4. The first time the masseuses nails were pretty long and it was almost painful when she would run her nails down my arm, so I would hope that someone/manager has a policy for their masseuses- but seeing as my masseuses was basically doing the massage, answering the phone, processing payments and greeting clients during a massage I doubt that management is active. 5. Lastly, and this might just be my own thing- the door to my room was left open during the entire massage. It was not completely ajar but open enough for me to feel uncomfortable. There is a screen in the room that shows the front desk so why the need to keep the door open is beyond me. This not only caused me to be uncomfortable as I knew no one was at the front desk and the door to the spa was open, but it also made me uncomfortable as a person who is laying face down naked. Again, maybe this is just a personal preference but it was uncomfortable and disrupted my ability to just dose off. read more

This was a very disappointing experience. My wife wanted to treat us to a 90 minute couples massage with hot stones and cupping ($200). She loves cupping and I've never tried it. Well, the therapist asked me if I liked it. I told her I never tried it before. Because of a hesitation that she heard in my voice, she decided not to do it. The price didn't go down. The massages are inconsistent, we had been here before. And the therapist is constantly leaving because there is no receptionist. So happy this spa is within walking distance from my house! I went today with my GF to get a massage, my poor legs were so tight and I had a knot in my shoulders that desperately needed to be rubbed out. We walked in and were very impressed with the cleanliness and the overall feel of the place. Yan greeted us and was so very friendly. She led us to our rooms to get our massages. I had Lisa as my masseuse. She is very quiet, which is fine by me because it is often very hard to hold a conversation when someone is applying copious amounts of pressure to a sore spot on your body. Lisa has very soft but very strong hands. She worked out all of the kinks and I left there feeling amazing. Will definitely go back!! read more

Came across this gem here on Yelp and I was not disappointed. I especially love how close it is to my house. I booked a couples massage and I was nervous at first because of the language barrier but nonetheless the lady on the phone was soo nice and accommodating (I changed my appt time a few times). The facility is very clean and I loved the modern furniture and decor. We did the deep tissue massage and it was painful at times but felt soo good afterwards. Amazing. My massage therapist is so intuitive and well versed in healing techniques. I weight lift so I am often sore and she is the only therapist I've had in a long time that's 1: strong enough 2: listens to what I need and want 3: knows about muscle groups and the body. I've been going to her for 4-5 months now. The spa she is in now is new, super clean and a really cute space.
