I'll start with the positive first-these doughnuts are delicious, and never fail to deliver....but WHOO, man...be prepared for terrible customer service. I've had nothing but great experiences in the past, until tonight. Pretty sure it's the worst I've ever felt in an interaction with a cashier. She was visibly annoyed when I changed my mind on a flavor, and then I was rudely corrected when I pointed at something that wasn't the flavor. What a great place to grab a donut, coffee, tea etc. They have all of the classics and some crazy-good specialty donuts as well. The staff is terrific and the observation window is a really cool feature so you can watch them make the donuts right there before you eyes. There's a nice sitting area if you're not in a hurry as well. I've never had a bad donut or a bad customer service experience here. They are my go-to donut stop (and my new Friday addiction is the Blueberry Fritter) - SO GOOD! Took my daughter there tonight for a late night treat. After I walked in I noticed the woman behind the counter grabbing peoples donuts was not wearing a mask or gloves, when I noticed this we turned around to walk out and noticed the guy behind the glass window MAKING PEOPLE'S FOOD was not wearing a mask either. WTF! All of the customers in there wear wearing masks. If you don't care to wear a mask for yourself at least do it out of respect for your customers! So f'ing gross. I would say today was just a bad day quality wise but this isn't the first time. The cinnamon roll was dripping in grease, the chocolate raised was glazed and then frosted which is just disgustingly sweet and weird. The dough tasted like cigarette ash. Normally the overglazing is only an issue with the twists and maybe there is an oil issue every now and then but the last few times we've come here its been the same problems. They were also out of everything including sugar raised and any maple. The one plus is the staff is awesome which is why I ignored the decline in quality for so long. My friends owned this place "back in the day," and my brother worked here as a donut maker through college. To this day, he still holds the title of "scariest donut-maker ever." Scary as he was, he would make one helluva donut! Today, I discovered that the recipes haven't changed and this place is still as good as it was 15 years ago! Nothing beats a fresh Chocolate Chip Square at 1am. A ridiculously hefty concoction of dough & two flavors of frosting, filled with -- you guessed it -- melted chocolate chips. It'll be just you, the cops, some stoned high schoolers, and 1000 calories staring back at you as you tackle that monster. You'll feel a little quesy when you finish it (and you WILL finish it), but there's a certain sense of accomplishment knowing you just defeated the meanest donut of all time. My girlfriend has been working in Chico for the last few months, and one of her coworkers brought donuts from Donut Nook to work one day. She really enjoyed one of their chocolate chip squares, so when I visited for the weekend we decided to check out the store. We each ordered a chocolate chip square, and I got a glazed donut. The chocolate chip squares are unlike any donut I've ever had. They are large squares that are covered in chocolate and maple frosting and are filled with cream and chocolate chips. I thought the frosting on top was overkill, but the rest of the donut was decadently delicious. It was too much sugar for me to finish the whole thing though. The glazed donut was definitely better than your average glazed donut at other places. It was incredibly light and airy on the inside and had the right amount of sweetness. Both donuts were really tasty, and I would definitely recommend Donut Nook. read more

A favorite and staple of Chico I think! Donuts are one of those late night snacks that must be taken care of. The Donut Nook has the best reliably delicious cake donuts around. While I'm usually a sucker for raised donuts, the cake ones here are out of this world. Dang you, D-Nook! I just can't quit you! We use to live right down the street from this fabulous little gem---open practically 24/7. Oh how I miss our late-night walks here (yeah, we had to earn those donuts.) We no longer live in the area but always make sure to stop in and get our fix when we are in town. Staff is always nice. The fiance and I were in Chico and decided to stop off at the Donut Nook. From the outside, you don't think much of it, the place is open late which gets it an extra bonus. Once you get inside, again, nothing much to look at. The one cool feature here is they have a glass window which you can see them making donuts. Much cooler than the old Krispy Kreme. Place is beat up, but they have a decent selection of donuts. The fiance decided to get the Chocolate Chip Square and I decided to get the Bear Claw and we were off on our way. It didn't look big in the display... BUT DAMN these were HUGE. The Chocolate Chip Square was huge. Very good and plenty of chocolates. My Bear Claw was about the size of real Bear Claw. Very fresh and tasted great. We both finished our donuts (well I should say I finished my bear claw and 1/4 of the chocolate chip square because it was too much for the wife) and I know I wasn't hungry for the rest of the day. I was stuffed. First time that has ever happened to me eating a donut. Prices here are reasonable and service is quick. Probably one of the better donuts I've had in a while. This is literally the best donut you'll have, ever. I've had donuts in many places--potato donuts in Santa Barbara, gourmet donuts in Los Angeles and San Francisco, "authentic" donuts in Washington DC, Krispy Kreme on the other side of town--nothing compares to the deliciousness that is the Donut Nook. It's great early in the morning before class, late morning after a long night of festivities, or in the dead of night when you're meeting up with old friends you haven't seen for years. The staff is warm and the donuts often are, too. The prices have increased lately but not by much--you still get a ridiculous bang for your buck. The interior also looks like it's straight out of the 70s. Their coffee isn't bad, either. And the donuts? Whether it's the maple bar, blueberry old fashioned, or chocolate square, whatever suits you will be the best you've ever had. They do everything extremely well. Make sure to ask what's fresh, because that always adds that extra factor of warmth and gooey-ness. Overall, 5/5. I will be returning to the Donut Nook ritually until the day I die. Pros: Good donuts Cons: Bad service I saw on here that there's a $15 minimum for the use of debit cards, last I checked it was $10 (the "policy" is constantly changing). We've been under the shelter in place order for about 2 and a half weeks now due to Corona virus. My husband and I decided to go to the Donut Nook this morning as a treat for breakfast, we've been going here for years and the donuts never disappoint. Well this morning when we ordered our donuts we observed the girl pick up our donuts with the wax paper in a half assed way touching some of the donuts with her hand while she did so. She then took our cash with her bare hands and gave us change and then with no gloves and no wax paper and without washing her hands she went straight from handling the cash to moving the donuts around in the display case! This would be disgusting even if there wasn't a pandemic going on right now. I came home and threw the donuts in the trash. Gross. Teach your employees how to handle food safely. read more

I've been to donut shops around the world and nothing compares. This place is the gold standard. Biting into these donuts is like pushing a rope. It's the softest donut ever. I've actually had dreams of me eating donut nook donuts and woke up crying because it wasn't true. If you've got an ugly girlfriend go to donut nook. It'll make you feel better. If your ugly girlfriend just broke up with you go to donut nook. If your dog just died go to donut nook. If you're considering dessert go to donut nook. My only complaint is that they have funky hours. Sometimes they're closed in the evening and don't open until late. However, it's kind of cool at the same time because it's like finding a great band who only plays in a basement of a tavern in downtown of your least favorite city. I love this place. I love donuts. I really do. It's almost a serious "life issue" problem. Donut Nook makes it harder. But when I do give into needing my donut fix, I pick the Donut Nook. Don't go to a grocery store for your donuts. Don't go to some other choices locally that have a poor selection. Head to Donut Nook. Buy an Apple Fritter (my dad's choice) that's about the size of your head. Get their signature Chocolate Chip Square and eat yourself into donut heaven (and maybe a sugar coma). It's just the greatest! If you eat in late night, take a look through the glass at the often college student employees making the donuts. Then play whatever old school arcade game they have featured next to the door. When I was a kid, it was Joust. I sadly can't remember what it is right now. The only downside to the Donut Nook is a minor one. The turnover of the staff seems somewhat high. Once in a while (maybe 1 in 20 visits) over the years I'll run into an unhelpful employee and get some bad service. For example, I show up at 11pm, there's nothing out... I see a fresh batch of donuts peeking at me from behind the counter... He tells me they're off limits and not for sale yet! Bizarre! But again, a rare experience and not a reason to deter. Yes- 5 stars. I don't think you could get better donuts anywhere. They are open 24 hours, and have been owned and operated by the same family for a looooong time. It was operated by one of the family's close friends for a while, but now back to the same family. Good thing, too, as they are as nice as can be! Everything is made the old fashioned way and just really, really good. They have every donut you could think of...raised, cake, old fashioned, bars, twists, buttermilk... Their specialities are a HUGE donut called the chocolate chip square, which a rectangle of raised donut filled with chocolate chips, cinnamon sugar mix and crumb donut mix. It is then topped with both chocolate and maple icing. A huge seller, but it has always been too rich for me. Their gi-normous apple fritters are outrageous. The best fritter I have ever had! Everything is delicious and their cookies, muffins and scones are also baked in house and very tasty. Their chocolate chip cookie is especially yummy. They also have cold maple or chocolate bars filled with custard. Perfect for a hot Chico day! They serve coffee, milk, orange juice and have a full espresso bar. The seventies decor is just apart of the nook. It adds to the awesomeness! I also love the window that allows you watch the bakers doing their thing at night. They cook throughout the night and stay open all night, so if you're up, there's nothing like a really fresh donut from the nook! read more
