The donut texture reminds me of those short bread cakes, crispy edges and softer insides. Service - friendly and was able to customize my 1/2 dozen a little better than I thought, so props to her. I appreciate the effort it took to make these Vegan donuts, but do note they are different than regular donuts, hence the pricing. I did hope that the donuts would be more made out of the flavor of the frosting- i.e., matcha donut instead of just matcha frosting over a plain vegan donut. The matcha was pretty tasty though imo. After reading and hearing mixed reviews, I still decided to give them a try. I started with a caramel donut -$3.50. The caramel flavoring was good, but the donut, which had a cake-like consistency, was dry and cold. It may have tasted much better when it was fresh. For an appetizer, I got the Buffalo Cauliflower -$8.95. Large, crispy, cauliflower florets, drizzled with a delicious, light-spiced buffalo sauce. Excellent dish, but it could've used more buffalo sauce. Large portion; big enough to share. As my main entree, I ordered the new Nashville Hot Chik'n Platter - $14.95. This platter comes with spicy fried chicken, "traditional" greens, and a choice of either hash browns or a biscuit. I requested hash browns, but ordered a biscuit with gravy on the side as well... The hot chik'n was not spicy, but it was extremely tasty, nonetheless. The seasoning on it was phenomenal. I would 100% order this dish again (but as a basket next time). The hash browns were ok. There was nothing particularly special about them. I put hot sauce and ketchup on them and tried to get some of the seasoning from the chik'n to assist as well. Those greens... I had a southern upbringing, and let me tell you that the devil is a liar. Those are NOT traditional greens! All I could taste was olive oil and foliage. No flavor. No seasoning. No soul. My hope is that this shameful dish disappears from the menu, or they bring in someone who actually knows how to put the vegan throw down on some real greens. I never got my biscuit, yet I was still charged for the unused gravy (that was supposed to go with the biscuit). My DD ordered the Southern Fried Chik'n Basket -$8.50, and she was very pleased with her dish. We were brought a glass pitcher of water and 2 cups. The cups were visibly dirty (like gross) and they didn't have straws. I requested their paper coffee cups instead. The new waitress who initially helped us (it was her first day) was very nice. The other waitress who took away the dirty glasses had somewhat of an attitude. I can honestly understand why some people have issues with the lack of cleanliness here. If they focus on keeping everything clean and cooking dishes that they know how to cook, they could be a top-notch vegan cafe. Despite the issues that I had, they'll still get 4-stars because of their 5-star Nashville Hot Chik'n and Buffalo Cauliflower being the saving graces. read more

The price point for the donuts here is definitely higher that your usual mom and pop donut shop. They have a huge selection of vegan donuts and trying them I was pleasantly surprised. The donuts are dense and the bases are the same. The glaze makes the difference in flavoring. Overall it's a decent donut and a change of pace. While I still prefer a non-vegan donut, I wouldn't mind indulging on these either. So far I tried the blueberry, lemon, and vanilla glazed donut. All good and full of flavor. read more

COME EARLY TO THIS PLACE. I came 30 mins before closing and sadly they only had about 5 flavors left (really wanted to try the matcha & mexican hot chocolate). Luckily they still had the blueberry donuts left so I was a happy camper! Paired that one with their coconut one and they were both delish! Fair warning that the blueberry donut didn't have blueberries inside it, but more so a blueberry glaze. Given that it was so thick, I thought that it'd be dry but it was quite the opposite. The cake was nice and moist and oh so tasty. The same could be said for the coconut one. Didn't realize this place was also a brunch spot since it's so unassuming on the outside aside from the huge donut. Will definitely need to come back to see if it's another great vegan spot for brunch but i'm a fan of the donuts! Service is so friendly, the vegan donuts are the perfect amount of sweetness and so novel, and the food was absolutely amazing. I'd recommend the Fort if you're feeling hungry, since it came with so much and such a variety of food, but I also really want to try to Chikn and Waffles when I'm in the mood sometime for more fried food. A solid donut shop. Let me give you the breakdown: 1. They have round donuts with no holes. While these are certainly delicious balls of fried carbs, they tend to be a bit lacking in specific flavors like blueberry, maple, etc. 2. The good stuff are the donuts that look like regular donuts with holes. I bought a few of these the other day and they were AMAZING! Soft on the inside and crispy on the bottom. It was one of those rare moments when you take a bite and say "Oh my god, that is a damn good donut." 3. I did not try the apple fritter personally, but a coworker (who is not easily impressed) said "oh wow, that's the best apple fritter I've ever had. Pepples took me by surprise. I had driven by the shop on San Pablo countless times, with the minimalist facade and fuzzy pink donut perched under the weathered Donut Farm sign. I knew Pepples offered vegan donuts, but I wasn't aware that their entire menu was vegan until I stopped in for brunch this past weekend. Ordered the Country Fried Chick'n and upgraded the hash browns to Mac 'n cheese for $2, which was completely worth it. While the Mac was missing that distinct cheesy flavor, the texture and flavor was creamy and satisfying. The "chicken" was nicely fried and had a meaty texture. I haven't tried a lot of vegan meat, but it was tasty and a good substitute. Got a pink to-go box with a banana fritter and a few "top shelf" cake donuts, which have more unique flavors and are 50 cents more. We picked out matcha, lavender earl gray, salted caramel, and Philz coffee. The donuts are in the $3-3.75 range, but considering they're vegan, not a bad price. I love how they take it a step further to not only offer delicious donuts, but donuts in exciting flavors as well. The banana fritter was almost identical to a regular fritter and the cake donuts were drier inside compared to a regular donut, but they still taste great. Definitely worth a visit! read more

[COVID Review] I totally wasn't expecting this when I walked by. At first glance it doesn't look like much, and if you're not paying attention you might miss that it's a donut shop. I am so glad I stumbled upon this spot. After living in Oakland for a year, I've seen the stickers randomly and heard people raving about these mysterious vegan donuts. When I got there, there was already someone ahead of me. The shop is small, and because of COVID, one party is allowed in at a time. It was not at all busy for a Wednesday morning. I was able to choose all of the donuts that I wanted on display. I picked a Mexican hot chocolate, chocolate coconut, and a plain donut. I want to start by saying while the two flavored ones were absolutely delicious, it was the simplicity and flavoring of the plain donut that did it for me! The next favorite of mine was the chocolate coconut. I am not ashamed to say I ate both of these on the 5 minute walk back to my house. I like coming to Pepples for weekend brunch and raised donuts. Where else can you get vegan brunch and raised donuts that's all organic? I've noticed they've changed their menu a bit throughout the year but so far everything I've tried I liked. They used to offer chick'n and waffles but took the chick'n off the menu because they found out Gardein was not organic. Today I went for brunch with friends and they all enjoyed the food. We had the blueberry corn pancakes with a side of tempeh bacon, biscuits and gravy with greens, and breakfast burrito. All of it was pretty good. It's a plus that they are using local Rhizocali tempeh for their tempeh bacon (my fave tempeh). This time we arrived during the early part of their brunch hours and waited just a few minutes to be sat. It started getting really busy as we were finishing our brunch. My only negative experience was one time I came and the servers didn't greet us for a while as we were standing by the door waiting for a table; but the majority of the time the service has been fine. Over a three year period I've witnessed the quality and cleanliness of Pepples decline to the point of no return. As in, I won't be returning. The donuts are dense and dry and the glazes are painfully sweet and lacking in flavour. Yesterday I watched the employee at the counter accept cash payments and box donuts with no gloves or anything to protect people from germs. It's flu season dude. He had a little piece of bakery paper balled up in his hands he would uncrumple and use to place donuts in boxes. This goes against everything you learn in restaurant hygiene courses!! Came on a Sunday morning for brunch with my best friend. We came in and despite there being five or so staff and it wasn't super busy, no one acknowledged us for about five minutes. We eventually just sat ourselves, and I got a server's attention who finally came around. I wanted to switch my order after we ordered and one of the servers was able to do it easily. Aside from then, no one else checked in on us throughout our meal. Service overall was lacking and confusing, but we lived through it. The food was good, but they were out of syrup for the waffle and substituted with agave syrup which was fine. The fried chicken and waffle was excellent and my friend got the fried chicken with gravy and greens. Overall, the food was good. The cruller, chocolate/peanut, coconut, and blueberry donuts are all good; if you like cakey style donuts, these are better than average, with good flavor. They are lighter, fluffier, and more moist than typical cakey donuts. (I prefer raised-style crullers, but these are good cakey versions, and they are vegan) I'm upgrading to 4 stars: I like traditional raised donuts better, but for vegan cakey-style donuts, they are pretty good (just not addictive like traditional donuts) However, the donuts are made using palm oil, which is loaded with saturated fat. The main reason I eat vegan stuff is to lower my cholesterol, but palm oil defeats the whole purpose. read more

So as Donuts go well for Vegan these were pretty good. They owners of the establishment really should put up a better sign (check pictures)......so the place is easier to find. This is a very small location and there is only street parking which I think is a shame for very popular locations. I can only imagine how much business places like these lose because they don't provide there customers private or lot parking. Now the Donuts is why this locale gets 4 stars.....but the prices are why it doesn't get 5 stars. I mean 3.25 is not bad for an apple fritter......but more apples in it would be nice for the price. The regular glazed doughnuts sell for 2.00 and I think that is a bit pricey as well but I do understand that because these are VEGAN doughnuts that is why the high price. I have come to expect that if I decide to dine at VEGAN establishments I will be paying higher prices for the food. I think my stomach went to heaven with this one. ALL these donuts are vegan!!! And there are so many really unique and creative flavors it was hard to choose!
