I'm glad that I stumbled across Coffee Conscious when I needed a caffeine boost! This is a small shop with a few tables and counter seating if you want to enjoy your drink and snacks indoors. The guy operating the shop was really nice and quickly prepared my coffee with great skill and finesse. My maple oat cappuccino (8oz for $5.50) was delicious. Smooth with a delicate maple flavor. I also tried my companion's matcha latte and that was probably one of the best matcha lattes I've ever had. The quality of the matcha was great and the latte was well made. Kudus! I was also pleased to find out that they have Donut Farm donuts here! If I hadn't gone to the actual Donut Farm shop earlier, I would've gotten some here. You're going to have to excused the half drank coffee but I guess that's an i dictator of how good this is! I'm not a normal coffee drinker so this was quite amazing for me to be raving about it. The prices are reasonable- you're not paying 8$ for a coffee. My drink was an iced coffee with coffee cubes and a shot of hazelnut syrup (I like my coffee a little sweeter) and was $4.50 The line moves fast and the barista saw kind. There is no wifi here but still many people working on their laptops. It seems like a neighborhood staple. They have a selection of donuts and sweet treats but there is also a great bagel shop across the street! Service is fine, and they prefer cash but can accept cards. I see that they are trying to make it a cozy place to hang, with a bookshelf and some games. This spot in one of my favorite little shopping districts in Berkeley brings back early personal and thus warm memories, but I had never been overwhelmed by the quality of coffee in this town. This is perhaps ironic, given that Peet's began here, as did a number of foodie destinations. But Coffee Conscious turns out to be something that I still appreciate about this OTHER city by the Bay: good quality and that slightly weird Berserkeley vibe. CC's interior is minimalistic and decidedly not flashy. Signage is hand written; fixtures are basic; the cracking concrete floor remains unfinished. It is, for lack of a better word, funky. But none of this matters. The baristas know their stuff. The sourced beans are first rate and the espresso drinks well-crafted. They even offer several specialty drinks you're not apt to see elsewhere. This cafe's other draw are some pretty darned tasty vegan doughnuts. Although produced by another company, I think they are sold exclusively here. Treat yourself to one. They're excellent. I can't recommend Coffee Conscious highly enough. read more

Cute little coffee place near a residential area. Came close to opening so didn't have to wait in line and while waiting for my latte to be made got to explore all the interesting objects on the walls and shelves. There definitely is a character to this coffee place, in a good way. Solid latte. A good size for the price. A good balance of bitter and creamy. Per other reviews they don't upcharge for non-dairy milk, I went with regular, but an added bonus for those that don't drink dairy milk. Donuts. They have delicious iced coffee and you can choose to get coffee ice cubes swapped in place of regular iced coffees (so the coffee doesn't taste run down, genius). Wow!! A fully vegan bakery with amazing coffee, and a place to shop? I was so glad this was one of the coffee shops I stumbled upon on a super early Sunday morning, since the barista was nice enough to provide me a mask and walk me through the various milks they have. I visited Coffee Conscious on Gilman in Berkeley and was disappointed with the lack of proper hand hygiene. The staff member (lady with glasses working today around 11:30am) was sweeping and cleaning when I arrived, then without washing her hands, she touched the surrounding coffee equipment and grabbed my cup directly. This raises serious concerns about food safety and contamination. If you pay in cash, she should have washed her hands again before handling my coffee or donut. Overall, the lack of hygiene makes me question the cleanliness of the entire place, including the pastry case. Very concerning and unsafe. BEWARE!!!! read more

This stretch of Gilman Street in deeply residential North Berkeley is so low-key and unassuming that I have to admit I forget the neighborhood is there to enjoy on a quiet Sunday morning. Jamie W. and I took a detour from our stroll on Solano and found ourselves here by accident. We decided to stop here and was taken by its communal vibe and the vegan doughnuts they get from Pepples, especially the chocolate one with shredded coconut. We were looking for a coffee place after shopping at Tokyo Fish Market. Whole Foods no longer serves hot coffee and Philz was closed, so we yelped for the next closest coffee shop and this place came up. We drove here and realized it was the coffee shop we would pass by and say we would try it some day. Well, that some day was yesterday. Anyway, we were planning to just get a 2 dollar coffee to go with our raspberry dark chocolate pastry, but the Turkish cortado caught our eyes. And since it isn't served at most places and we decided to try it. It was rich and strong. My first time trying Turkish cortado and I liked it. Not very use to the coffee grounds and other spices inside, but we enjoyed it very much with our pastry. My biggest worry when I try new coffee shops is when the coffee is acidic, but it wasn't acidic at all. The coffee here reminds me of Rasa Caffe..so good! read more

We are from so cal so a lot of our coffee houses lack any soul or it's a Starbucks. So our trip was made complete when my bf and I stumbled across this coffee house in Berkeley. The coffee is super delicious and smooth. Can taste the love. I got a maple oat cappuccino and my bf got their Drip coffee. Smooth, right amount of sweetness. Delicious! We noticed the little vegan pastries they had and let me tell you: 1. Get the plum pop tart pastry. Pastry is flaky and the plum filling so good! 2. I normally hate blueberry scones because the ones I've had are always thick and dry but these were moist and delicious and the best scone I've ever had. 3. The vanilla chocolate vegan donut. I came in a few weeks ago after a recommendation from my sister. I tried a couple of their donuts - so good! I asked the friendly barista what they recommend for coffee, and they suggested the Maple Oat coffee. It was AMAZING! And the coffee was very strong, had me going all afternoon, and I typically drink a couple cups of coffee a day. It's a very cute shop, with merchandise you can buy. I asked if the Chai or Lavender lattes could be made without sugar and she says no. So I say, are there any drinks you could recommend that don't have sugar in them? She suggests iced tea. I say I'd like it to be a coffee drink. So she states that coffee doesn't have sugar. Yes, I reply, but do you make any specialty coffee drinks without sugar? She says no. So I suggest just making a basic latte. She says "you know milk has sugar, right?" So I say, "you guys add sugar to your milk?" And she says, "No, but it naturally contains sugars." I love coming here! There are plenty of other cafes closer to me but it's worth it to come out of my way for coffee conscious. This cafe has quickly become my regular stop for coffee and a treat. The donuts are amazing and never let me down. The lattes are good and I love all the different flavor options (current fav is vanilla clove). Cozy little coffee shop that sells vegan donuts (that my friend claims are so yummy). The barista was super helpful with helping me choose a drink according to me and my friend's preferences with coffees. I had the maple oat cappuccino ($4.5) which was super yummy and strong, just how I like my coffee. My friend had the vanilla latte ($5) - which was super yummy too! The best part about this place aside from the easy and accessible street parking, is their price point. I left another review a bit ago because I'm a regular for the matcha here and usually love it but recently, I've noticed depending on the barista, my matcha's have been not mixed at all leaving many clumps at the bottom and honestly undrinkable. Best lattes around! And I've tried most of them in the east bay. This cafe doesn't charge anything extra for oat milk. Big thanks for that! So sick of being nickled and dimed at every turn these days. Many cafes charge 75 cents or a dollar for non-dairy. A welcome and welcoming atmosphere with its own quirky quirks. A place that reminds me of being human -- oh yeah, that!! Often a healthy line of customers, so i get my daily reminder to be patient and to breathe. I remember that anticipation enhances the deliciousness when it arrives. Shelves with toys for toddlers, books for browsers, without particular design. None of that sterile sense of sameness in so many cafes, even those that are not chained. I especially appreciate the live music that happens from time to time. This is a hidden gem in Berkeley and is definitely worth a visit ! The space is small and full of its regular patrons who swear by the coffee. They have regular coffee and organic coffee as well because come on this is Berkeley !! Both are actually really good too!! I tried the Guatemala which was so so good 9.5/10 and the organic dark roast which was 8.5/10. Note : Most of their sweet treats are vegan so just ask before ordering. I tried their banana muffin which was the perfect accompaniment to the coffee 8/10 The staff here deserves a special mention because they are extremely friendly and passionate about coffee! Note : They have a bathroom in the back. You would not know that because the space looks fairly small. I recommend this place to all to try delicious coffee and to experience a local neighbourhood favourite. You can meet the most interesting people here! My local sister recommended we stop by and we weren't disappointed. Coffees are all made to order. Plan on some time to get it but it's worth it! No franchise here. I'm glad other people like this place but for me, it was a disappointment. I ordered 3 drinks to take home - a chai, a mocha, and a matcha. The chai was ok but the mocha and matcha were not. Both were tasteless with an unpleasant bitterness. I was expecting the drinks to be rich and full flavored but was disappointed. The barista was kind of rude too.
