Sadly, Peterson's sold and now are just a mere shell of what they were, making the hunt for a good donut a thing. My wife's colleagues brought in donuts from Mary's, and when she got home and said something about it, I had instant recall of the donut debate from my work. We pulled a late-night donut adventure, and ok East County peeps, you were right, you were right, I said it twice. (I'll still vouch for the old Petersons, but I digress). The staff was friendly here, and quick to point out their favorites, and what they are known for. Having these donuts, right there, just made them that much better than taking them to go.... which we did as well. This is a far hike from Escondido, to Santee, but a drive well worth it. There is a lot of parking in this strip mall/shopping center. The inside is bright and had plenty of seating and counterspace to sit and stuff your face. I will be back Mary's, I'll be back.

Today, I repeated my single donut choice at least twice, the last time immediately before you grabbed the wrong donut. I hate maple, even if it touches my donut. The menu is huge with tons of options, but since it was my first visit I decided to play it safe. The bagel itself was delicious. It was chewy with great flavor from the everything seasoning. I especially loved the onions in the sandwich, which added a nice savory bite. It did take a little while for our bagels to come out, but everything tasted fresh and warm when it arrived, so the wait felt worth it. Next time I come back, I definitely want to try the cinnamon raisin bagel with one of their spreads. There's seating both inside and outside, and on such a nice day I opted to sit outdoors. It was slightly busy, but the line moved quickly and the staff kept orders moving at a good pace. Overall, a great spot for a casual bagel breakfast or lunch, and I'm looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu.

Part of the brand experience is grabbing a tray and tongs upon entering and selecting individual items to be boxed up at the front. Unfortunately, here everything is just individually wrapped in plastic (yuk!) and just left out at room temperature (closer to 70 degrees) on countertops. The counter person isn't nearly as friendly either. Is it still tasty? Sure, but this location is tainting the brand's identity. Would recommend the Genessee or UTC locations over this one.

The latter was terrific. It was well balanced with strong rich coffee flavor and smoothness brought on by the steamed milk. I had them warm up the cinnamon roll. Although it was warm, it did need about 45 to 60 seconds more time in the heating element because the center was not thoroughly heated. The cinnamon roll was quite good. It was soft and full of great cinnamon flavor. The icing on top was good too. It was sweet but not overly sweet. The offer a variety of other locally baked goods and pre-made packaged sandwiches for those busy grab and go folks. The two ladies who work here are super nice. I hear they make some pretty good smoothies and milkshakes as well.
