Our little 'one was sick at home so we decided to do a 'take out order. I ordered the Linguine with clam sauce and babes ordered the Mix plate. Linguine was yummy and had enough flavors to my liking. My husband devoured his plate in minutes so I knew he was happy with his meal. I wonder if the size may have been a little bigger if we had eaten 'in, I thought our portions were a little small. But it could just be because we were hungry and wanted more. We will definitely return. My only want would be that they update their menu prices on their website. read more

I'm shocked at how absolutely wonderful my visit to Don's Grill was yesterday. We were seated quickly, had our orders taken in a timely manner. The waitress brought all of our food out at once, every time. Drinks, entrees, and dessert. We were always getting refills of our coffee and water...even after we paid the bill. (We were waiting for a family member in the bathroom.) I absolutely demolished my pork cutlet. The fries were deliciously crispy, and the gravy on the cutlets wasn't too salty or bland--just right. My mom ate my vegetables for me and she enjoyed them. What surprised me was that all of our food came with a little bit of honeydew melon...it was the best darn melon I've tasted. I had never been so happy eating at a restaurant before. My grandma did not finish her French Dip, but when we asked for a take out container, they had given her a fresh cup of au jus to go. They even put the strawberry sauce for my cheesecake in a separate container, to make sure it would store properly. I'm so in love. read more

I like this place. It's almost always busy which is a sign that it must have good eats. It does. There's something for everyone here. I've been many times with my friend and we usually bring his mother. She always finds something she likes - and she's on a low sodium diet which isn't easy. The desserts are most excellent too. Parking can be a drag sometimes as can the wait for a table. Totally worth it tho. Go and enjoy! read more

I personally don't mind these type of restaurants, but I will say there mud pie is very good. When I was eating they pretty much blasted the ac, which left my family and I freezing. Otherwise it's a pretty descent restaurant. Though add 2 dollars to the kid menu if your not above ten is a little ridiculous. Decided to go to Dons Grill after our flight from Honolulu. This was our first time but my parents are regulars and highly suggested Dons. The service was awesome and the food was great. We have lived in the area since 2005 we didn't eat out much but this last year decided to. We decided to try out Dons I've seen great reviews but just never made it. This is our new place the staff were professional and very sweet. We were excited to see patty melts and french dips our favorite. Our dip was stuffed full and since we share everything came with separate au juice even the beer we shared came with two frosty glasses. I'm eager to try the BBQ next time. I loved this place!! So unassuming, I almost drove right passed it. Once inside, it is a very casual and relaxed atmosphere. Don's has all typical grill fare on the menu, but also has some local favorites. Speaking of local.....if you want to eat where you don't feel like a tourist, this is the place. Seems like this is a local favorite and it's always nice interacting with the folks that live in the area. Overall just a nice relaxing place to grab a bite and relax and enjoy the island. read more

Mediocre food with satisfactory service; we had the grilled Ahi with fries, portuguese bean soup and the Chili dog with macaroni salad. Fish was pretty plain, bean soup was okay, and the chili dog could have been better. The mud pie was good though, with layers of chocolate ice cream, coffee ice cream, chocolate, and Oreo-type cookie crust. read more

We used to enjoy coming here. Not so much now. We went on my birthday, right after they opened. It filled up fast, but we were able to get a seat as soon as we walked in. After deciding what we wanted, it took less than 10 minutes to come out. They should have used those few extra minutes to make sure my hot turkey sandwich was actually HOT. Not only was it practically cold, I was very disappointed to see that the turkey looked and tasted like Oscar Meyer carving board. My mom wasn't too impressed with their clubhouse sandwich either. She had ordered Mac salad, they sent out her sandwich with fries. Meh, no big deal really. The major bummer was the fact that the food went downhill. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

It is a quaint little diner, they have some local favorites and A lot of there menu is relative to home styles cooking, and comfort food. They have a good staff and there menu is reasonably priced the only downfall for me is that the last time I went there the waiting area had a moldy smell to it. read more

Don's Grill is my favorite restaurant on the Big Island. They have a very broad menu and all of their food is very good. There are lots of local favorites, plus old standbys such as liver and onions and lasagna. They also serve breakfast all day, which is usually what my wife and I order. Hands down the BEST French dip sandwich in Hilo. Absolutely delicious, thinly sliced and melts in your mouth and au jus makes it top notch. Bun is excellent and my only compliant is it needs a bigger au jus cup! :) read more

I've always liked this restaurant! Why? Service- Don's could possibly claim to have the speediest in Hilo! Food- Here's a place where your dollar goes a long way! Entrees come with salad or soup, roll, and choice of French fries, mashed potatoes, or rice (white or brown variety). My favorite is the mixed plate with pork cutlet, grilled fish and teriyaki chicken, all so good that it's hard to say which is most flavorful. My two favorite sandwiches are Reuben and Philly Cheesesteak, which are served with fries or cole slaw or mac salad, and a dill pickle. I could eat either one of these every week! Hours of operation- while many Hilo restaurants are closed after lunch and before dinner, Don's conveniently remains open from 10:30 (10:00 on weekends) AM until closing. read more
