This may not be your typical Chinese food. They have the typical modern "American" style dishes. If you want to be thrown off your comfort zone then this place will do it for you. Dishes were unique. The server was kind enough to explain some of the dishes like if it's spicy or not. Here's the downside: hot sour soup was lukewarm and the Shumai was mediocre. We ordered the pan fried pork bao but didn't come out on time. We totally forgot about it and left. The chicken broccoli was on point and so as the steamed BBQ pork buns. My son loved the fried rice. Thankful a place like this exists around here! I miss my Chinese food as I'm from the city. Great authentic Chinese Food I love the spice. Ordering is made so simple with their system and I know it's good when all the tables seated are Chinese speaking customers. Every dish I got here was 5 stars all around. The lady was so kind she helped me box everything up at the end of our meal as she saw I was handling two toddlers. we ordered our food through delivery so i can't comment on the service and the atmosphere of the restaurant. the food was honestly just disappointing? we ordered the mapo tofu, a small hot and sour soup, crystal shrimp, fried pork dumplings, and boiled pork dumplings. mapo tofu - 1/10. this might be the WORST mapo tofu i've ever had. do NOT order this. the sauce tasted like dishwater- it was SO watered down. i wish i was exaggerating!!! the sauce tasted so fragrant it almost tasted like soap or perfume. we had to throw it out because it was just inedible. the after taste was really unpleasant and it also burned for some reason? also, it just looked really unappetizing. hot and sour soup - 5/10. the soup was... okay, but it tasted strange. it was very tomato-y? it tasted more like a tomato soup than hot and sour soup? crystal shrimp - 7/10. this was good! pretty standard and no notes, i would recommend this if you are in the mood for dimsum. boiled and fried dumplings - 4/10. the meat was seasoned very strangely. my friend said it tasted like a sausage. the dumplings also tasted premade and store bought. just okay, not terrible but not really enjoyable either. also the chili oil tasted like nothing. read more

I went there with my family today and the food was pretty good! The Secret Recipe Braised Pork was very good, a favorite amongst my family members along with the Garlic Chinese Lettuce. My only thing that got me to take out one star is that when I tried the Cloud Fungus & Lotus Seed Sweet Soup, it wasn't what I expected...? Like I thought it was going to be similar to the one pictured on the virtual menu in a little bowl; the cloud fungus sort of whole in pieces, but what I got was what tasted like a very watered down version of it, in a cup given with a boba straw. I've had cloud fungus before, cooked some at home with various dishes and knew the texture that was expected, though what I received didn't feel like that unfortunately. But overall other than that, my family and I enjoyed the experience. :) The service was nice, very friendly and attentive to your needs. The setting wasn't too large, or too small, but spacious enough to fit a good amount of guests inside. It is unfortunate that there are so many mediocre Chinese restaurants, making it nearly impossible to tell if one from another. I trusted other reviewers and was not disappointed! The Special Grilled Fish is terrific. My wife and I split one for lunch and were completely satisfied. Tender and wonderfully spicy - continuing to cook as we ate it. We ordered the green beans and combo chow mein. I LOVED the green beans as they were stir fried with some pork and pickled veg. SO TASTY!! The chow mein was a little heavy on the bean sprouts and light on the noodles for my taste, but were still good. I'd definitely come back for the green beans, but will try another rice/noodle dish next time. All of the staff here were super friendly and mindful of us. They checked in often and came by a few times to make sure we were ok, had enough water, etc. I really appreciated their attentiveness! I don't know how long they've been around, but happy to have some authentic and delicious Chinese food in Newbury Park!! read more

I wouldn't think to find a super authentic Hunan spot out in Thousand Oaks, but I had to find out if it was true. Now I'm cursed with the wish that this place was closer to home. Feels a bit mom & pop since the only person working the front of the house also appeared to be owner/manager (?) so things were a smidge slow at weekday lunchtime. However, it was clear she cared quite a lot about the food; as we were enjoyed our meal she came by to chat about how she specifically gets her greens from a special supplier to avoid getting grit into the preserved veggies for our dish (spoiler alert: they were delicious and very much grit-free). Since we were going for a relatively light lunch we couldn't order more, but we went with Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables and Mashed Eggplant and Green Pepper with Century Egg. Our server amusingly noted that these weren't spicy (which was intentional to accommodate my brother). Both were absolutely delicious. ==Braised Pork Belly & Preserved Veg== Comes with six freshly steamed buns. This was about as gloriously fatty and decadent as the photo can do justice. Melt-in-your-mouth consistency, enough lean meat to have a nice chewy part, very well seasoned but not too salty. The preserved veggies were fantastic and there was a whole mountain of them underneath (most places will cut back cause it gets expensive). Well balanced so as to not be too salty as well, so it was much easier to eat than other places I've been too. ==Mashed Eggplant== So this one actually *was* somewhat spicy because of the tiger peppers, so it's all relative I suppose, but also a mark of authenticity that their 'not very spicy' dish was still spicy. This was artistically served in the mortar itself! This goes deep so it's a lot of food, but it was supremely delicious. The oil at the bottom does need a smidge more mixing over the course of the meal though, to make sure the flavor is evenly distributed (and by flavor I mean spiciness). I only lament that this place is so far from me cause I'd love to give their other Hunan fare a serious shot. Alas, it shall have to wait for my next venture. Dong Ting Spring had been on my list for awhile now and I finally was able to make it for a late lunch. I frequent the boba tea shop next door and always had a craving to give this place a try so I was happy to sneak away earlier this week. I agree with most of the other reviews - the food and flavors were overall very good. The cooking feels like "home cooking" just meaning there is a love that seems to go into every dish. I was impressed with the menu as there was a large variety to choose from and lots of yummy sounding spicy dishes. Also comparable to some reviews I felt like the service lacked. It's difficult to write this as I felt like the friendliness and smiles of my waitress were A+ but her follow through or attentiveness to check in was a C+. First the food - despite the large menu I kind of wimped out a little and went with some safer dishes. Usually that feels comfortable for me when trying a place for the first time - I want to make sure they can execute the more common dishes before trying some of the more unique ones. I ordered a lemon iced tea, shrimp fried rice, and soup dumplings. Shrimp Fried Rice: 4.5 stars - the flavor of the rice was so delicious. Comforting and light. Really tasty, just the shrimps were a little on the small side comparable to other fried rice I've had. Soup Dumplings: 3.5 stars - good but not great. The wrapping was a little on the thicker side, more bite then I like. However the broth inside was yummy and the flavors overall were good. Their chili oil was also very tasty, however I was given a super tiny dish of it and once I received my food I didn't see my waitress nor was I able to flag her down when she went to another table to get a refill so that was a bummer. Really good chili oil, just wished I had been given a more realistic serving size given I had asked for it. That brings me to the service. My waitress was beyond friendly and smiley! I really liked her for this reasons - she was quick to take my order and brought everything out how I had asked. She's really kind and makes me feel bad to acknowledge anything "not so great" but I wanted to be honest. I felt like once I got my food I was never checked up on again. Maybe she was leaving me to enjoy my meal but usually at least one check in after the final dish hits the table would be nice. For example, needing more chili oil but my back was to her so it was pretty hard to get her to see me unless she came by. Also once I was done eating I waited a good while hoping for the check but she didn't come by. It wasn't until she finally started to take an order for a table that finally sat next to me that I got her attention. Even then after taking their order she turned to leave and I had to really speak up to have her see that I needed my check and to go boxes. It wasn't the end of the world but I definitely felt overlooked towards the end of the meal. I really want to support local businesses and feel like the menu left me wanting to come back to try more. The flavors were overall good and prices were reasonable. I would just hope for a little more consistent service but again, she was lovely and sweet when I did have her attention. If you are looking for some genuinely authentic Chinese food in Ventura County, look no further. They have a pretty intimidating menu but our server was kind enough to help guide us to what to try. There are definitely some items on the menu that looks pretty adventurous like the stinky tofu but I went here for lunch and I was definitely not coming back to work smelling like stinky tofu. We ordered the fried string beans with ground pork, spring rolls, xiao long bao, BBQ pork buns, beef rice noodle soup and the pumpkin pancake. All of that and some drinks ended being around $80. All the dishes come ala carte and are family-style so the prices are fair to their respective sizes. ALL of what we ordered was delicious!!! The spring rolls were my least favorite and i still thought it was really good! There's plenty of parking and is located in the same plaza as Starbucks and Chakaa Tea in case you want something to wash down the good Chinese food. The takeaway: Excellent food, excellent depth in the menu. When they are really good, Strip and shopping center restaurants always surprise me. I was pleasantly surprised. The soup dumplings were very flavorful without being over saturated. The "spice heat" scale was well calibrated. There were some language barriers with the staff that prevented me from getting a full understanding of what I was ordering, but a web search filled in many of those blanks. The only disappointment is the staff seemed adamant about me not getting the Stinky Tofu. actually, I am disappointed in myself for allowing them to talk me out of it. I've been meaning to try this restaurant for a few years. In a post in a local Facebook group, members were recommending local Chinese restaurants and this was one of them. The most notable comments were that it was authentic, and "Asians go here" lol. I had business in Newbury Park today, so my husband and I decided to try it out for lunch. As we entered, a younger lady asked how many, motioned us to a side table with chairs on one side and a banquette on the other. Once we sat down, she offered us a different table similar to a booth. We were fine so we stayed put. She motioned to the QR sticker which we scanned to reveal the menu. There's some weird stuff on the menu... chicken feet, pigs feet, pig intestine, tripe, etc. Go to their website and check it out. There were some things I recognized and many I didn't. I viewed it as an opportunity to taste something new. So we decided to order one we recognized: veggie chow mein, and one we didn't: stinky tofu. We used their menu system to order. A few minutes after submitting our order, the server came up to ask if we meant to order the stinky tofu. I thought, how bad can it be? She clearly didn't think we should order it. She said Chinese people like it, but not us crackers. So we bent to her will and ordered House Special Tofu. She asked if we wanted pork in it. Sure why not. She's in charge anyway lol. Both dishes were made with super fresh ingredients like snappy soy bean sprouts. The tofu was amazing with a curdled texture. It appears they ferment their own tofu. I must admit, I've never had home made tofu. There was a lot of it in the dish, many pieces tree ear fungus, sliced garlic and ginger, some special hot pepper with a citrus overtones, and tender pork. All this was served in a two-part clay caldron. I must say, it was fantastic; some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. It tasted to me like they make their own fish sauce, everything was so perfectly savory yet balanced. Four stars because their soft drink beverages are in cans, there is no iced tea -- just hot oolong and jasmine -- and they're kinda racist, albeit in a very sweet and accommodating way. Enjoy! When this restaurant first opened the food was good and the prices were right. Today I went and ordered the Mao Pao Tofu and other items on the menu and absolutely everything was incredibly salty and just tasted awful! In fact, I couldn't even eat it. The Mao pao was so bad it tasted like floor cleaner! We tried to send it back and the chef openly has a huge tantrum for the entire restaurant to hear. They brought out another that was equally as horrible and rather then send it back again, I just paid my check took it to go and threw it in the trash when I got home!
