All of our orders were prepared within 10-15 minutes like a well-crafted assembly line and the staff were very friendly and inviting. I hadn't eaten here before, so the young woman working was very nice and guided me along-- I settled on their DonerG Istanbowl: (Rice, Beef & Chicken Kebab, Red Cabbage, Onions, Parsley, Shepherd's Salad, Falafel & Pita Bread) And my friend got some kind of wrap. Who knows, but I took a photo. Unfortunately, food wasn't hot. Maybe lukewarm at best. My meat was kind of dry and cut up in small bits. I was disappointed. We sat outside near the fountain and too tired to walk back to engage in conversation regarding food. The flavors were there and it could have been better with some other things I mentioned. Felt like I got more pickled veggies. My friend said the wrap was good and thoroughly delicious. The side sauces were flavorful and paired well. I ate half of my bowl. Service was fast, but then again nobody was in there except us and maybe 2-3 other employees. The restaurant looked a bit disarranged as if it were extremely busy earlier and nobody cleaned or organized until closing time. Here we are in Irvine CA, We were tired and hungry and had a difficult time making decisions where to eat. DonerG pop up in my search for fast-food near me. We decided that it would be ok. I've had Doner previously in NYC was not impressed, perhaps this was better. The place was located in a large shopping mall, the usual take out/fast food place with some tables. Tonight's NBA match up between LA Lakers and the Denver Nuggets is an apt metaphor for how tonight's dining experience went. Stay with me here, and I'll elaborate. After four straight 4 or 5-star visits to companion stores in Lake Forest, I drove the extra ten miles past Ball Avenue on the 57 FWY (Anaheim) to sample the Irvine branch. Like the Nuggets, the 2023 NBA champions who've throttled the Lakers eight straight times in the Mile High City, I arrived expecting a fabulous, memorable feast. Instead, the only thing I feasted on was my beloved Michoacana wife's irritated comments and strained face as she endured, by her appraisal, a meal unworthy of DonerG's reputation. Leti ordered her and my signature dish at DonerG- The Chicken Kebab Platter, while I sought to switch things up by ordering a Chicken Doner Bomb plus a Chicken Pita Wrap for takeout. While the Irvine staff BENJAMIN, NAIM and an unnamed young man with tousled black hair and Eurasian complexion were all polite and service-focused, I wished their attention to the finer details of food prep kept pace with their counterparts at other branches. Specifics: *The Chicken platter warranted three demerits: a.) Some of her chicken morsels were overcooked, leaving the meat dry; b.) The signature hummus was missing; and, c.) The tossed green Mediterranean salad, usually generously bathed in a shower of lemon vinaigrette, was also dry and skimping on the dressing. *My Doner Bomb was a solid "B," but the fries heaped on it weren't even remotely hot, let alone warm. The fladenbrot pita bread used to cradle the hearty, vertically-roasted chicken shawarma was toasted to a delicious, crackling mouthful. The Irvine store benefits from a fantastic location that screams "curb appeal" and "dine here" to all of the surrounding foot and vehicular traffic. Restrooms were reasonably clean and stocked. My bill was $48.90 for three entrees, one soft drink and taxes. While the Lakers did their city proud by outclassing the Nuggets by 22 points to smite the eight-game road losing streak, it proved my overall point. Just as you must PLAY THE GAME instead of jumping to conclusions, so must DonerG guests not assume that every single meal will eclipse the 4-star or higher mark. The half chicken, half beef doner side dish tasted very oily and while there was some good flavor, the meats themselves were far too thin and small to get even the remotest satisfaction. I really enjoyed all of the sauces and taste-wise was satisfied. I was shocked to notice that the restroom had no soap nor paper towels which is a red flag on maintenance and priority of hygiene to me. I only ran into the restroom after eating to wash up after noticing there was grease dripping down my arm from the food. I love DonerG but I was surprised when I ordered a fries and it came with melted blue plastic on it. God knows how many pieces we ate till I figured out the smell and the taste was weird and im not talking about after that we both came home felt very sick! I already attached the pictures even the quality of meat was very bad! There were many pieces that we weren't able to chew! It wasn't only in my wrap it was also in the other wrap! I ordered Keto wrap actually I just asked for substituting the wrap and put in Keto wrap and they told me they were only able to change chicken with beef and I wasn't able to choose my toppings and I wasn't provided with further explanation which I didn't like. If I knew I can't change the keto topping definitely I would order the regular wrap because I love taboulee to be in my wrap! They weren't flexible either which it was ok even though I don't like feta cheese that they used in it! It didnt match with the taste! My wrap was so tiny and too small compared to the other wrap! I was really disappointed with my experience at DonerG-and it wasn't just the food, it was the way I was treated. We came in and were helped by a young guy who was pleasant but seemed completely out of it-disconnected, spacey, and visibly struggling to keep track of orders. He forgot things multiple times during the ordering process, and overall just seemed overwhelmed or not fully present. There was also a young woman working who had a cold, unfriendly demeanor the entire time. No greeting, no smile, no sense of hospitality-just a lot of attitude, like we were bothering her by showing up. The food portions were small for the price, and they were super stingy with the toppings. We still left a tip, as we always do, but then realized one of our three plates was missing the hummus. I went back inside to let them know-politely and patiently and the girl looked at me like I was trying to scam them for a side of hummus. She said nothing, didn't apologize, just looked over at the guy and then handed me a tiny little sauce cup of hummus like she was doing me a favor. The whole interaction left me feeling disrespected and unwelcome. Between the bad service, attitude, and lackluster food, I definitely won't be returning. Today was the time to try something new. Originally, I was going to try Cava, but Döner caught my eye. It was serendipitous because I've been craving this for a long time. Ben put together my beef plate, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but they fulfilled my order just the way I wanted it. I'm pretty sure I wanted to try this place years ago because there aren't a lot of spots like this. The manager also took the time out of her day to be hospitable and gave me a little background about the company (It's been around for 11 years). I'm glad to know there is decent management out there because I've dreaded a lot of my food service jobs in the past, so I definitely support businesses that care about their employees and serve high-quality food. I ended up picking 4 sauces to go with my order, along with the baba ganoush. It all sounds and looks scrumptious, and the prices are reasonable. The food is fresh--the menu was simple--I'm a happy camper. You really can't go wrong with Turkish food done right. The texture of the beef is tender and phenomenal, as well as the tartness coming from the pickled cabbage. It's a well-balanced, proportioned meal and very filling. Short and to the point. They're located at the corner of Lake Forest and Rockfield. The plaza gets really busy at dinner and parking can get quite packed at times.
