Dondero's is a cozy little place, with delicious and healthy breakfast and lunch options, freshly made by Tim Dondero and his crew. Tim's amazing heart shows through his dishes, made with a lot of care. He's traveled the world, knows his stuff about many types of cuisine (and history, etc) and that adds to the intrigue. He also has a Tapas with Tim night every first Thursday, and that is always themed in a fun and educational way. I love his breakfast that comes in a small skillet and his soups too! He also offers some takeaway options in a fridge to help out on those nights when you just don't wanna cook or go out. This place has great food and I really enjoy the rustic casual dining atmosphere. I ordered the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo. It was a great value at $6- chicken salad flatbread sandwich and roasted tomato bisque. The chicken salad was well seasoned and very moist which complimented the crunch of the flatbread. The bisque was hearty and satisfying. They give large portions and it was plenty of food for one person. Great food, good service, plenty of seating with a good vibe. My dad and I went for brunch this weekend. It was not busy, however it took us an hour to get our food. After about 30 minutes, we checked in on if our food was ready, the server seemed frustrated and proceeded to say "the kitchen is small, it takes time to fill orders." If the kitchen is small, don't have seating for 40-60 people if you can only feed 4-5 per hour. After a second time checking in, we saw our food in the window ready, the server said she'd bring it to us, it took 10 minutes for her to bring it to our table. By this time, our food was cold. Could have made the same food at home for cheaper price, better quality, and less time. Save your time and money. read more

Its unfortunate when a culture becomes so focused on itself that is lacks the ability to deliver customer service! I just attempted to have a nice brunch-lunch at the shop only to be shocked by outright rude behavior. I ordered a breakfast egg plate priced around $6 and a small cup of coffee and the bill totaled over $9. I was then told I was being charged another dollar for substituting potato chips for hash browns. Both made fresh in their kitchen. When I brought the absurdity to the owner's attention, I was branded as an Athens "outcast" -- a guy from outside the Socialist Republic of Georgia Athens Clarke County. I was told that I was asking for the restaurant to change "way too much" and that since I was making the change, I would have to accept the higher price. Unbelievable stupidity of the Athens Cultured. The woman brought the plate to my table and asked if it was okay. I told her that I was not going to eat the hash browns and her response was that I certainly had no understanding of how restaurants work. I replied that I was the CEO of an Atlanta-based marketing firm and we worked with restaurants and retailers on a global level. She commented that obviously I was not from Athens. No plans here to ever return and I advise others, if you are not part of the "cultured few," you might want to try another option in the city... maybe even a Starbucks! read more

Absolutely solid Brunch location. If you love brunch-esque and quaint decor, you have found a gem. The potatoes were a complex of very savory flavors. The staff was extremely nice with lots of smiles. My only complaint was I saw multiple posts on Facebook and Yelp about their macarons and they didn't even have them on that day. At first I was skeptical about coming here. The parking situation is a bit...unique, but the inside of the restaurant was definitely quaint. This place is great for a quiet brunch or coffee date but I could see how things could get hectic if it was busy, it's close quarters. Also I'm not a fan of dumping your dirty silverware, plates and cups in a bus bin with other peoples leftovers but hey, that's the way they do things here. I sought this place out due to the favorable Yelp reviews and the mention of gluten free and vegetarian options. The atmosphere is very casual and comfortable. I ordered the egg and veggie scramble with a side of fried potatoes and some gluten-free "toast." When the food arrived I realized the toast was actually just some type of flatbread. I wasn't in love with that, but just the fact that a gluten-free substitute is offered is nice. The veggies and egg scramble was undercooked, but still decently good. What made the whole trip worthwhile was the gluten free options in the bakery case. I tried both the banana bread and the pumpkin muffin. Both were truly delicious and had a great texture and flavor, which isn't common for a lot of gluten free baked goods. I would come again just for the bakery items! read more

I had been to their botanical garden location before, but I've never been to the Milledge Ave. one until today. It is in a lovely old house that is very well appointed and looks inviting to hang out for a while in. There's even a little market area and some local art and handicraft for sale. There were some prepared meals and sandwiches that looked really good, but I went ahead and ordered from the menu. I ordered a black bean burger with some sort of excellent chutney and really enjoyed it. It was very light, unlike a lot of other veggie burgers that I find around here. Housemade chips were served with it that were just my speed of salty. Loved it. Best of all, the staff was incredibly personable and they seem like they're really trying to do awesome things in the neighborhood and with the local community. I'll be back. I dig it. read more

Order at the counter. Get your own water, forks, condiments, and napkins at a different counter; they bring the food, you bus your own table. I will start off by saying that this place was not at all what I expected. My review may be a little skewed because I don't like restaurants set up like this one was. This is one of those places where you order at the counter and they bring your food out and then you clean up after yourself... I prefer the traditional restaurant. Reviewing it solely based on the type of restaurant it was... I was not impressed. The prices were decent for food, the coffee was a tad expensive. The girl at the counter wasn't overly friendly. The food was ok- we each had a breakfast burrito- they were good but not amazing. In two words I would describe this place as cute but confusing. This is not a bad restaurant however I've noticed a trend in Athens that allows restaurants to become hands off with customer service and places the customer as the one doing the work. No table service, no drink service, and an apparent lack of dependable help in and outside of the kitchen. What was memorable was the food quality, a egg breakfast sandwich, and the drinks I observed others enjoying. I say others because I never received mine. Apparently what I ordered was not what the employee charged me for and she just never made it. This was confusing and I asked her after my food came out "what happened"? Honestly, I've never been more confused in a restaurant than in that explanation on how I ordered a drink and she somehow didn't charge me for it so she wasn't able to make it and just wasn't going to make it for me. It became very awkward and I just walked away and drank my water. She never once offered to make me a coffee drink whether paid for or not. In Athens this is not how you get customers to come back. Obviously people like this place and I understand why. It is cute but it lacks that touch that my family and I personally appreciate. Had read good things about the takeout entrees and decided to pick up a meal to go on a weekday night. The broccoli/ham casserole sounded tasty and I got a small salad, too. For the number of portions and overall taste, the casserole was overpriced at $14+. Beautiful salad, but also on the high side. Such a friendly staff, we ordered some food and apple muffins and they came to our table to tell us that they were going to bake a fresh batch and didn't want to give us the ones in the case. They asked us if they could exchange our order for something fresh and we agreed. They brought out a huge box full of extra goodies going above and beyond to make up for the apple muffins. Okay under somewhat difficult circumstances. We went there as Hurricane Irma was approaching as a tropical storm. The lights were flickering, but thankfully the power stayed on. Most of the food we had was good if not plentiful. We tried the Skillet, the Burrito, and the DK Scramble. The burrito was average, but a good size. With the DK, there was only a tiny portion of eggs and veggies, but a wonderful thick slab of whole grain toast with a pat of actual butter (not margarine), and the Skillet was a little bland. Everything came with very thin, tiny triangles of potatoes which were overcooked and dried. On top of this hit and miss breakfast, there were young children (ages 3-5) that were running back and forth to a side play room. Playing in the play room was fine, but why do parents let their kids create so much noise and commotion stomping around the tables and yelling? Just be aware that this is a place frequented by young undisciplined children. read more

This place was great in every way! People are so friendly, the house is so beautiful, and the food is great. I had a half sandwich/half soup deal and picked a gypsy stew with artichokes and a chicken and goat cheese flat bread sandwich. Both were awesome! We also had an Italian almond cookie and chips and a Thai dip which were both awesome and new to me.
