I'm from Kalamazoo, MI originally. I've been to Donckers a few times here and there. First sandwich I ever had from there was the Scarecrow. It's my favorite thing to order. My family and I are making our way up north for the weekend decided to stop at Donckers for some chocolate and a couple sandwiches. I called over the phone for 1 Scarecrow and 1 Philly Cheesesteak. I had to repeat myself numerous times from the employee not really understanding what I asked. I asked for the scarecrow to have no red peppers and to add their pesto Mayo with Focaccia bread. The Philly as is and to have a few sides of ketchup. I repeat my order a few times and have it wanted to be picked up at 230. I get there and the food is ready, awesome! The young man who gave me my order was extremely pleasant and enjoyable. He gave me my receipt so I could pay downstairs along with the chocolate I wanted to get. I had planned to buy chocolate covered gummy bears but they were all out. We get to the car and my sandwich is just not what I ordered. The Focaccia bread was at least 2 days old and extremely dry. The bacon on the sandwich was extremely fatty and barely cooked. The red peppers were put on my sandwich, but clearly removed even though they're still pieces of the pepper all in my sandwich. No pesto Mayo was put on my sandwich and no ketchup packets or sides were given. The Philly was perfect and my brother thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with my stop at Donckers with how much I payed and will most likely not come back. *** Additional Update, I just opened my small pack of chocolate covered Oreos that I ordered because they didn't have the gummy bears. We arrived at the restaurant at noon. I heard the breakfast was good. We could not order breakfast. The lunch menu was ok . A lot of cheese and Mac and cheese was on the menu. I ordered the Lambeau leap burger with aioli on the side. The aioli was put on the burger. I ordered iced tea which tasted like iced coffee. I sent it back. My son ordered a chicken sandwich with no onions . They put onions on it. My daughter got undercooked chicken. They also add a service fee of 2 % . The Mac and cheese was kinda bland . They definitely have a good selection of chocolates and special treats. We snagged a few truffles and a birthday cake waffle cone to go. Such a great way to make a day in Marquette even better. Let's get the food rating out of the way: BLT on rye: 5/5. Super good. Well-made, bread tasted like it was buttered and toasted. Chips: 3/5, came out of a manufactured bag (not handmade), tasted good, a bit awkwardly packaged since they crammed it in a to-go soup bowl (maybe in a hurry, see story below) so some of the chips fell apart. Nihon noodles: 3/5. I wish I knew it was just a ton of carbs. It was in the salad section so I thought there were would be more vegetables, but if there was any, it was a tiny amount of minced...onion, maybe? It tasted fine, but wasn't what I wanted. The experience: I initially came in for dine-in. It was around 2:05 p.m. on a weekday, and it was my first time. The main floor was not crowded -- there was a party of 8 indoors, and a few more occupied tables in the back area outside. I thought I had plenty of time to eat a cold sandwich before my 3 p.m. meeting since it wasn't a prime meal time (late lunch), but I was wrong... It took a little bit to get the attention of a waiter to seat me and then take my order. Maybe by 2:15 my order of a BLT with Nihon noodles and chips was taken. The party of 8 received their food maybe at 2:30, and that made sense to me since they ordered before me. I assumed my food would be up soon. By 2:43, however, I still hadn't received my food, so I flagged down a cashier to help me convert my order to to-go. She promptly and courteously changed it, but then it still took another 10 minutes to get my food, with the cashier being extra attentive. I checked the food to see if I had everything, and unfortunately I was missing my chips. A different cashier was still around, so I asked for help, and she directed me upstairs to the kitchen. I realized there that there were more people eating, so maybe the kitchen was backed up (in addition to the larger table near me). Regardless, it was a bit of a pain to get my corrected order, and I ended up needing to bring my food to my meeting, joining it a few minutes late and awkwardly eating it. Cute little spot! I love their storefront with a little shop and homemade chocolates. We were sat upstairs for breakfast. There was a big menu too! Flavorful coffee and fresh-squeezed OJ with just a bit too much pulp (wasn't strained at all). I got a breakfast sandwich with gouda, cheddar, tomato, and an egg on ciabatta with a side of hashbrowns (half portion according to the menu). It was on the smaller side but tasted good - a full side of hashbrowns or two two eggs would've made it more complete. My boyfriend got the steak scramble. For lunch they offer up a ton of vegetarian sandwiches and grilled cheeses and also have side items that are vegan- and vegetarian-friendly. For lunch we ordered the avocado grilled cheese on their in-housemade focaccia which was to die for! For breakfast, I ordered the Hera omelette which was a Greek-style omelette and my husband ordered the French Toast which was so so good. Both meals were really good here! Bonus, they also have really great malts and a soda fountain and candy shop downstairs. The restaurant is upstairs, so when you walk in through the candy shop, go up the stairs to get to the restaurant. You can sit outside if you eat downstairs (if weather allows). It gets really busy on the weekends. This time I had the Freighter, an over-hard egg on ciabatta bread with smoked gouda, tomato and avocado. Space is limited and you want to make sure you're able to enjoy all that Donckers has to offer. There is seating both downstairs and upstairs.
