Awesome pasties with a great crust! The side of gravy was 1/2 cup and very tasty. We had the fudge also, and it was delicious.

I was blown away by how good these were. I have been buying pasties over 50 years in the UP from another restaurant but we were in Munising and my granddaughter wanted a pastie so we stopped here. Chicken pasty was very good, filling and well made. I think I liked it a little more than the other pasty place in town. The service was helpful. The ambiance is gift shop that sells fudge and sit outside on the picnic tables, so not much. A couple of healthy drink options would be an improvement. I had a can of ginger ale. Grabbed a chicken and an apple pastie. $13.75. However, they do charge 4% to use CC. $14.32 Our pasties looked anemic and not the golden color I saw on some of the pastie pics. The chicken pastie was packed with a lot of potato and some ground chicken in between. Should be called a potato pastie. It was quite dry. The bottom of the pastie is super thick and quite dense. I gutted my out. It's dry and has zero flavor. Should have gotten some hot sauce, would be better with sriracha even. The apple pasty tasted like an apple pie. Has good flavor. Bottom of the pastie once again is dense and heavy. The tops are flat and boring. Flaky would make it better. When heading to the Upper Peninsula we had heard a lot of hype about the pasties, so we figured we had to try some! The restaurant/shop itself is very small and cute! A small little gift shop inside with a counter to order your food. There are multiple tables outside to sit and eat your pasties. The pasties were pre made and kept warm in an oven/heater and we received them immediately after ordering. Very friendly and fast service! Unfortunately the pasties did not live up to the hype for us. The insides were a mixture of the chosen meat with carrots and diced potatoes, but it was extremely dry and flavorless. The outside pastry was also very bland and very dry. We had some hot sauce which helps to make it a little less dry, but even the flavor of the hot sauce wasn't enough to help it. The one saving grace was the apple pie pasty! That was at-least packed with nice warm apple pie filling although the outer pastry was just as dry as the meat pasties. Perhaps we got a bad batch, or maybe this is how they are supposed to taste, but unfortunately I don't see the hype of the pasties! read more

I remember getting a pastie as a child, taking one bite and not eating the rest. I thought it was bland. Either my taste buds have changed dramatically, these pasties are more flavorful, the beef gravy I got with these brought it to a whole other level, or a combination of those factors, but their traditional pastie with beef gravy is phenomenal. (I think the gravy makes a world of difference, so I'd never order it without again.) The strawberry cheesecake dessert pastie was also wonderful! The shop contains several made in MI goodies for purchase, and seating is outside at picnic tables (some covered and others not). I would undoubtedly visit Muldoon's regularly if I lived near here. These were pretty good, we had the traditional. After trying these and Miner's, I gotta say Miner's are better, so I'd recommend their pasties! I like their flavor and the pastry is better. The carrot cake was really good also and tasted homemade. I'm pretty sure the apple pastie at Muldoon's was canned apple pie filling. read more

Man I hate to write a bad review about a small business that for the most part has done nothing wrong. This review is more about the item itself than anything they did per se. As I was preparing to take my trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I was told that I had to try a Pasty (pronounced Past-ee). When I drove over the Mackinac Bridge I saw no less than 20 signs for pasties in my 2 hour drive to Munising. When I got to Munising 4 different people recommended Muldoon's as the place to eat one of these pasties. A pasty is a puff pastry kind of a combination of a pot pie and a sandwich filled with ground beef, rutabaga, potatoes, carrots, and onions. They serve you a side of dark brown gravy on the side. This was the dryest, most flavorless item I have ever eaten. There's no seasoning unless you add the gravy and then I don't know if that added any flavor, just made it less dry. I just don't understand the appeal. Maybe I am spoiled because I am from New Orleans and everything has flavor. I was expecting this to be like an empanada or a meat pie but it's just like eating cardboard. Again for those who like them, I'm sure Muldoon's does a fine job. The people were very nice. I looked up other places and they all looked the same so my issue is the item itself. Maybe I should move up here for the summer and add some Tony Chachere's, cayenne pepper. or some sort of sauce to make these better. I feel the entirety of the U.P. needs this! Yes yes yes yes! The last time we were in the area we stopped at a pastie shop in Marquette and were sorely disappointed. We were so hopeful about Muldoon's when we saw the signs touting them as #1 pasties in the U.P., and we were NOT disappointed. First off, this place knows how to churn out hot, delicious pasties in fast order. We ordered and paid and had pasties in hand in less than 1 minute--being a shop that specializes in so few things means you can keep cranking your best selling items through the lunch rush! Husband and I both ordered beef pasties. For those of you not familiar with pasties--think of a walking pot pie. Muldoon's makes a homemade crust that is flakey around the ridges, and soft and pliable in the center--delicious! They stuff the beef pasties with ground beef, onions, potatoes, carrots, and rutabaga. If you get the combo (special?) you also get coleslaw, beef gravy, and a pop included. If you don't want all of that, at the very least I suggest you be sure to pay for the side of beef gravy, as it's DELICIOUS and enhances the pastie-eating experience. Worth noting that Muldoon's also makes chicken pasties and a vegetable (vegetarian NOT vegan) pasties too. We went to the location closest to Riptide Rd., but noticed that they also had another location in the more downtowny area of Munising too! You order indoors, but there is only seating on their porch or patio tables in the yard. You can take food to go, and can even order frozen pasties. The only thing I hated is that we didn't buy a dessert pastie for later in the day. We were just too stuffed to think about anything else. Grabbed a chicken pasty from Muldoon's during my vacation to the UP. Dunked mine in a thick and delicious chicken gravy (because that's 100x better than ketchup...) So good and satisfying and filling and comforting. The shop is cute and very small. There is a gift shop and a counter to buy pasties. They also sell wild rice, which I bought a bag of. Super excited to make it! Highly recommend a stop at Muldoon's Pasties if you are ever in the area. read more

I have been looking forward to trying pasties that I've heard so much about. A specialty hand pie filled with meat and potatoes with an option to smother with beef gravy or eat with ketchup. We stopped in at Muldoon's pasties on our trip to UP. The filling was hearty and flavorful but I didn't particularly enjoy the crust. I expected it to more flaky but it was very dense and dry. Before heading up north I've read and watched reviews of this iconic pasty of Munising and it did not disappoint. The crust was not too thick and the beef and veggie mixture inside was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Definitely recommend the gravy, added extra flavor to the already flavorful pasty. I was traveling to the UP on my way to see some picture rocks. I'm from downstate Michigan. This was considered the original pasty of the UP. So of course I had to try it. It was super fresh and delicious and felt like it was just made which I believe they do make them daily. I got the beef although they did have chicken as an option. Ask lady how do Yoopers eat it and she said with ketchup. So I tried it that way. She did offer me gravy which I think would make it more like a pot pie which is probably more to my liking. Although I do like ketchup on my potatoes. It was good but definitely needed to s&p I think I would have liked it better with gravy. But it was fresh and the crust was flaky but just needed some butter. I would definitely eat it again though. Definitely stop here. When in Rome always try to get pasties. Muldoon's offers beef, chicken, vegetable and desert pasties. I also appreciate that they serve them hot, cold or frozen. We purchased a frozen beef and chicken and had a hot apple for the road. I always have beef gravy with the pasties otherwise they can be a little dry. All of them were excellent and very filling. Muldoon's did have a line but that is alway a good sign of a quality business. Small lot and street parking. Pricy gift shop. Outdoor seating. I definitely would return. read more

The lobby was nicely decorated with the selection of gifts, stickers patches, etc. we chose one beef and one chicken having never really experienced this food before. Loved this place! Awesome customer service, seems very family owned. Nice outdoor seating area. We got the meal deal with the traditional pasty - it was great! Definitely preferred the traditional over the chicken. Be sure to add the gravy, it definitely changes the flavor. The chicken pasty was pretty decent as well, but less flavorful. I heard that Muldoon's was a must-try in the UP so I made sure to stop here after our Pictured Rocks cruise. These were our first pasties ever. The BF and I tried their beef and chicken flavors; we also got chicken gravy with the chicken one. These are HUGE so we were both very full at the end. The chicken gravy was an excellent addition and next time I would get gravy with each pasty since they are on the dry side. Overall (likely because of the gravy), I liked the chicken pasty more but they were both good in their own ways. The beef pasty reminded me of shepherd's pie in a pocket. The chicken pasty was like chicken noodle soup in a pocket. We also bought a box of their English toffee fudge which tasted exactly as expected. Very creamy, sweet, with a nice crunch from toffee pieces and nuts. Overall I enjoyed my visit and will be back! read more
