I hate Whitefish and Lake Trout out of Lake Michigan. Fishiest fish there is IMO. The fresh Whitefish and Lake Trout from Lake Superior is night and day different and Captain Ron's fries it up best!!! I recommend getting both and sharing as they are both fantastic and different. This is without a doubt the best fresh fish from any food truck and quite a great deal too!!! Don't change a thing!!! The fish from the shop is great too and fresh as can be!! Did I mention the friendly service? Great people!!! It's a must when in Munising!!! read more

Best roadside stop of the whole weekend. Good truck parked right by their fishery. They have a big smoker for the fish. Fish dip and the sandwich we tried were both super good. Ended up going to the shop to take a whole smoked whitefish home as well. The staff was super friendly. Location has very limited seating. read more

Cap’n Ron’s Fish and Chips - Fish sandwich - Fish & Chips Near Me - Munising, Michigan

No nonsense food truck 50 feet from where the fish is hauled out of the lake ... both smoked and fish fry were excellent, great value and innovative add ons like smoked fish spreads with Brad Pitt (okay, pita bread) read more

Delicious fresh caught fish, fried while you wait. Also smoked fish available. Yeah, it's a food truck. Seating is outside. it that fish was swimming this morning! Friendly folks at the window, service time was fast. read more

Great fish .. not much comfort sitting outside but I understand this not there main business this is for a quick grab and go but the fish and fries are delicious even at $ 30.00 plus for the basket .. read more

The 3 members of our team all agreed that this food truck rates a 5 because of their food. Not being a fan of fish in general, this stop was GREAT! My lunch was a twist on the Reuben. No corned beef here but rather a FRESH Whitefish deep fried filet with cheese and coleslaw on a local version of rye bread. After I finished the meal I found out that the Whitefish filet could be substituted with a Trout filet. My other 2 teammates had 3 pieces of Whitefish and fries baskets. We all agreed that these fries were some of the best we've ever had. Typical bottled soft drink selections including tea and water. If you're looking for ambiance as Yelp may suggest, nope......IT'S A FOOD TRUCK! The parking lot is gravel with limited seating on picnic tables. You need to follow "Mapquest" closely to not miss the frontage road that the truck is parked at. read more

Excellent everything!!! We ordered the Ruben fish sandwich special (one trout, one whitefish) and a fish 3 piece trout basket. Everything was excellent and service was quick! Thank you :) read more

Went on the recommendation from a gas station clerk, she mentioned Gordan Ramsey had visited (or something). I picked up a 3 piece fried trout basket which came with slaw and fries. Everything is fresh!! They get the fish from the fish market behind them so you know you're eating a fresh catch then the bread and fry it while you're waiting. The batter was super thin and tasty. My 7 year old couldn't get enough! Turns out Gordan Ramsey stopped here after his producers had and then ended up filming a segment called "Michigan's Yooper Cuisine," on his show "Unchartered". Pretty cool tidbit of information. read more

Cap’n Ron’s Fish and Chips - ows a man sitting at a table in front of a food truck - Fish & Chips Near Me - Munising, Michigan

Hot & Fresh! This food truck may be tucked away heading out of town, but is a must stop. The fish is caught daily out on Lake Superior, processed by the Matson family, then brought to their food truck for you to enjoy. Due to winds they didn't have any trout since fishing was cancelled that day. So that meant double whitefish in the Cap's Basket, and the whitefish was delicious. Thin breading, flaky, and piping hot. Every order is cooked to order and the fries too. The coleslaw is crunchy with the perfect amount of acid to balance out the creaminess. The fish sandwich was the perfect ratio fish to bun. The homemade tartar sauce is the perfect accompaniment and doesn't over power the fish. Seating is outside only to plan accordingly. Between the freshness of the food, the service, and the price point I Highly recommend! read more

DELICIOUS! We walked 1.5 miles from downtown Munising to visit Cap'n Ron's Fish and Chips. I'd done some research about the best fish and chips in the area and saw rave reviews about this place so of course we had to check it out! They're only open seasonally and we came at the end of September so we were lucky to catch them while they were still here. They're a bit hidden on the side of the road but Apple/Google maps will take you right there! Service was friendly, I think we'd gotten there right before the lunch rush so no one was inside the truck when we got there but they were super speedy once they saw we were waiting. The fish itself was delicious, I've never had smoked fish before but it was tender and really did melt in your mouth. I saw some reviews that things were too greasy but I didn't find that to be true at all. The homemade tartar sauce was sooooo good like seriously the best tartar sauce I've ever had and definitely took the fish to another level. It was a beautiful day and the picnic seating was great to take in the sun and enjoy a nice summer/fall day! read more

Great fresh fish. Quick and convenient service despite the heavy rain outside. The entire family loved it!

We saw the line from the street and decided to stop. We each got a whitefish and chips basket and it was scrumptuous! Make sure to ask for extra lemon and tartar sauce! read more

White fish is so good. Fries were pretty tasty too. Cole slaw was not gooey or over mayonnaise-y. Friendly server. Finding a legal place to park? Impossible. There are 2 picnic benches to consume your meal. Both were taken and there is a constant stream of hungry customers. We took our fish to a local park and ate in the car. read more

Great service, very friendly. My husband and I both chose the trout sandwich with french fries. The fish was absolutely delicious! It was exactly what you'd want, flaky and flavorful. It was lightly breaded, very minimal. The owner said this is the best trout sandwich you'll have, and we agree! It was! 10/10. Highly recommend. read more

This was the BEST whitefish I've ever had, no contest. It's a little food truck tucked away in Munising, with a small store and smokehouse - I highly recommend the smoked whitefish dip, I literally ate the whole container in one sitting haha There's nothing better than sitting on a picnic table in the sunshine with a delicious pile of fresh fish in front of you :) read more

Delicious! One of the best fish & chips in Michigan! Will be back and will also be recommending to others.

The captain's basket was delicious! The fish is so fresh and tasty with a light coating. Service was always great and the food was ready quickly read more

Do not sleep on Cap'n Ron's! First, the fries, legit, the best fries. The basket was the best and worth the $. It included 3 pieces of lake trout, 3 pieces of white fish, and fries. Want something better than that? The smoked fish dip is slap your own mother worthy. It's been 3 weeks and we still haven't stopped talking about it. read more

We split the 10 piece whitefish basket between 3 of us and had more than plenty to eat and some left over. The whitefish is so fresh and flavorful, and they really got the breading perfect also. So often, only one of these things are done tastefully. At Cap'n Ron's, the meat was phenomenal and the breading was thin, crispy and the absolute ideal amount. The cole slaw was so-so, but the homemade tartar sauce was a nice compliment. Fries were perfect as well. Nice people and quality fresh fish. read more

Best fish and chips I had so far! Cap'n Ron's is a food truck with a few tables in front and located on the side of the road. Nothing fancy but the fish is fresh and delicious. A must try after your trip to Pictured Rocks. FYI, they only take cash. read more

Delicious fish. Family meal value can't be beat. Fish is perfectly fried. I would absolutely return.

Great Whitefish and fries. Rugged in appearance but hey, it is a good food truck. Minimalist outdoor seating (a few picnic tables) but great for take outs! Would do again read more

We have always wanted to stop here every time we pass through Munising. We finally made the stop this evening on our way through. The whitefish basket was fresh and tasted great. Big piece's of white fish. Absolutely delicious. And fast friendly service. Sitting outside with friendly folks from other places.

Was recommended here by our pictured rocks kayaking tour guide who grew up in the area. He said he saw them fishing that very morning! So fish must be fresh and it tasted very fresh. We got the fish basket with the trout and 3 pieces. And we definitely got more than 3 pieces which is very generous of them! Fish was cooked perfectly and the fries were excellent. Coleslaw was nice and refreshing as well. Food came out really fast. There were 3 tables in front of the truck and parking near the truck was easy to find. read more

If you're looking for some awesome local freshly made fish and chips, this is your place. It's just a bit out of downtown Munising. If you like fish, I recommend getting the Lake Superior trout. I got the 3 piece Fried Fish Basket and it was a huge portion of fish, fresh crispy French fries, coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. They also had a few drinks for purchase or chicken strips. There are picnic tables in front of the food truck and it's right on the lake. Great spot after a long day of kayaking! read more

Fish tasted pretty good, but we both got sick later. Maybe old fryer oil? There were also lots of flies around the seating area. Not their fault but pretty annoying if you want to sit and eat. read more

Absolutely delicious batter-fried whitefish. Super fresh. Piping hot. Great service and as a NYer, super nice to eat something

I read some good reviews here, but in the end I was disappointed because the whitefish were really greasy. I could taste the oil all afternoon. Service at the food truck was fine. French fries were good but greasy too. read more

I stopped here on my hunt for some smoked white fish while in the upper peninsula traveling to see the picture rocks. I'm so glad I stopped. The dip is on a whole another level it's completely amazing. It's fresh and meaty and creamy and the pita chips I believe are homemade if not I'd like to know the brand. The fried whitefish was more like a pan fry and less like a deep fry which I didn't mind and the trout was delicious also everything was just so fresh. There's a couple picnic tables for dining. It's near the fish market for browsing for souvenirs and other fish like perch & whitefish. It's off of the main highway so it's easy on and easy off. Parking is a little tight. I walked around a little bit and noticed an old school fish house for smoking The walls were thick with black smoke. It was pretty amazing and the flavor definitely came through in the fish. Get some smoked fish to go. They could use a little s&p but otherwise deliciousness. The service was really quick and came with a smile I would definitely go back. You should make a stop You won't be sorry. read more

Delicious. Friendly staff and super fresh fish. Trout is excellent. This is our second visit when in town and we will be back.

So good! The fries are a must and the fish was fresh and delish. Parking was a bit of a challenge but would go back again.
