We frequented this place during our visit to the area. The beer selection was great - our favorites were Batter UP, Hot Nutz, Unicorn Piss, and Elephant Disco. The bar tenders were friendly as well. You can buy cans to go, but be sure to check the dates they were canned if it's not currently on tap, so you don't get a beer that's 6+ months old and possibly sour (we got one like that, but they happily let us swap). 4 - I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way just to come here. Skip to the end to see my rating scale. To be fair, you need to drive 30 minutes out of your way to get anywhere in the Upper Peninsula, but ByGeorge would be a worthwhile trip. They have everything I look for in a brewery - outdoor seating that's dog friendly, food handily available, and a solid beer menu. Our bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. Super helpful to mama as she tried to decide which beers to get in her flight. They actually have two outdoor seating areas - a nice patio just off the bar and a rooftop deck above the patio. We arrived too late to order from their kitchen but there's a pizza joint next door that looked like it had good stuff too. Overall, good experience, and I'd be happy to drive a half hour off the beaten path to visit again. We did not eat while here as it was pretty late but the beer was excellent. I am not an IPA drinker (it tastes like soap and grapefruit to me!) but I almost liked their IPA. We did 2 flights between the 3 of us and enjoyed every single one. There was a guy playing guitar in the corner and it added to the great vibe of the place. Great place to hang if you love beer! (and who doesn't). Just a wonderful variety of beers which we tried many and ALL EXCELLENT! Oktoberfest was especially tasty. The other nice aspect is that they have a variety of sizes/prices available. Sean the bartender was phenomenal in letting me try samples and giving a background on each as well as history of ByGeorge itself. (George is the owner/head brewmaster). They also have a large outside patio/beer garden area when weather is nice. The other extremely wonderful aspect is that the brewery is connected to the Driftwood Deli (open from 11-9). They have a wide variety of food to choose from but the best part is you can bring the food into the brewery OR bring the beer into the deli, an awesome arrangement. Holy disparity! Galactic Sorrow Russian Imperial Stout is very, very good - exactly the kind of beer I am always searching out. Nighthawk Dry Stout is very, very bad - the dominant flavor is char. Imagine my shock at Eh! Burger, seeing that only the latter was offered! As for "the rest of the story" - the bartender was friendly, and it was nice to be able to get food from the next-door Driftwood Deli. Brewery #276 This is exactly what a brewery should be. Good beer, experimental fun styles, good food, a fun area to hang out. ByGeorge is all of those things and then some. We came here around lunch time one day and ordered a flight. I was immediately impressed with ByGeorge's beer board. Most beer boards have just standard style beers (Stout, IPA, Porter, Hefe, Red Ale, etc) or they have 14 variations of hazy IPA's. I like all of those things but ByGeorge has the standards and fun things like a Watermelon Milkshake IPA, a maple blueberry pilsner, an apricot blonde ale and others. I ordered my standard flight of 4 beers: Watermelon Milkshake IPA, Yeti Confetti Chocolate Birthday Stout, Unicorn Piss (hazy IPA) and a Maple blueberry pilsner. They were all really good or at least interesting. The Yeti Confetti were both phenomenal. As a matter of fact when I came back the next night I ordered them both again. While the beertender was pouring my beer I was staring at the biggest selection of brewery stickers that I have ever seen. I was almost overwhelmed trying to decide which one I wanted to put on my garage brewery wall back home. We ordered sandwiches from The Driftwood Deli from the QR code on the tables and they were delivered to us. Really good pressed Reuben. Stopped by to pick up some beer while we were staying the area. It had a fun interior space, though not huge - probably seating for 20 inside. A musician provided a warm ambiance with live music in the corner, and I got the sense that that was common place. The pale ale that I grabbed was delicious. read more

This is the loveliest brewery in town. I really enjoyed the Hazy IPA known as Unicorn Piss. There are fun beers for everyone. You also get excellent banter and friendly service. I adore the staff, and knowing some of the history of the owner made it even more fun. George definitely knows beer. They have fun swag, some food next door to order, and a great patio, too. Very cute place. You order the drinks at the register and pay them seat yourself. The outside had live music and great ambiance. Really enjoyed the selection even tried a new one that was new and was very interesting and good. There is a food option however we did not order from there, we did see the food coming out quickly. No food. Scannable menu isn't updated, which is easier than printing one. Tried to get a beer on 2 separate occasions. First time an old couple decided to hold 7 chairs for friends, so no other table could be used. Brilliantly self absorbed that don't consider the rest of the world. 2nd time, they didn't have the beer in the menu. If you can keep a scannable menu updated, highly doubt they can make good beer. 2 tries and nothing. Bad news travels fast. read more

This brewery was a great little find during our trip to the UP. We were hanging out in the town of Munising and decided to hop around to a few breweries in the area, because that's what we do! ByGeorge is a new brewery and came highly recommended by the locals. They offered a great selection of beers and even had some live music for us to enjoy. They offer sample tastings of their beers on tap. If you happen to be in the area, I would stop in and give this spot a try. This place is a legitimate delicious brewery stop. I like that it is well-established. Their beers have both the "standards" but also some adventurous ones. We missed the deli because it was the Fourth of July, but brought a snack basket in. We did a flight of all the beers and were pleasantly surprised. Our favorites included the "Batter Up" maple and blueberry pils (think pancakes) and the "Big Cups" delicious and smooth PB cup beer. We got a growler of the "Batter Up" because it was unusually brave and delicious. We highly recommend for beer people. read more

We got two to-go cans - the s'mores porter and the strawberry milkshake IPA. The porter was not the best texture wise, taste was average. We were on a trip of northern Michigan and the UP to visit breweries, and ByGeorge had some of our favorite beers from the trip! After a day of kayaking Pictured Rocks, we were starving and ready for a beer. ByGeorge turned out to be the perfect spot as the beer was cold and good! We were quickly helped, and the staff chatted with us quickly about the space and the food options while they poured our beers. The outdoor area right next to the bar was full, but we went to the front of the building by the restaurant which was also very nice. We definitely recommend the sandwiches at the restaurant too. Stopped in here for a beer and a quick bite. I guess Driftwood deli next door is someones relative of the brewery so they kind of do a kill two birds thing, you can order food and they will bring it over to the bar side. I had a light lager and it was delicious. Hubby had the Nighthawk, it's a lighter coffee beer and was really easy to drink. Cool vibe here and staff was great. Super chill. FYI - they have the SOFTEST merch - tshirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, hoodies all felt like heaven. We left with two pieces! read more

Driving through Munising and saw this cute little brewery on the corner of 2 streets and of course being 11 am, we just had to stop in! They had a nice selection of 2 IPAs, a cream ale, an Oktoberfest and a couple others. I really liked the Oktoberfest and the Perro Muerto. The people working here were really friendly, helpful and just easy to talk to. There's an outdoor seating area along with a few tables indoors. You can order food from next door, paninis and such.
