This restaurant was recommended by on of the staff at the Fairfield Inn and Suites when we were staying in Tehachapi on our way to Las Vegas. Most of the restaurants I was interested in on YELP were closed on Sunday nights, so we took this reco from a local and ran with it. The restaurant is set back from the street in a little shopping area just off the main street from the first exit going East. It is worth a stop even if you are just driving through town. The service was warm, friendly and attentive. I had heard that the shrimp tacos were good, and I was hungry, so I ordered the dinner. My husband got the Carne Asada dinner. I got a very reasonably priced glass of Chardonnay, which I sipped as I studied the selection of tequilas lined up behind the bar. We were also brought chips and salsa right away. The chips are good, but more like packaged chips than fried chips. I sipped my wine, and enjoyed the ambience of this "local's" restaurant. It is the kind of place that your small office goes to for a celebration lunch, or for casual drinks after work. It has that casual vibe combined with affordable pricing that makes it popular. Our dinners came quickly and we enjoyed the hearty dishes. The food is kind of American-Mexican, as there was tartar sauce on my shrimp tacos. The shrimp were plump and there were plenty of them. My husbands Carne Asada was tender and there was a rolled up cheese enchilada with his meal that was just yummy!! The food had too much Lawry's Seasoned Salt. Season salt on the chips, in the rice and beans, and in my chicken burritos. There was also celery in my burrito. Never had that before ‍ and it wasn't good. Throw away the season salt! Red Robin and Lawry's themselves (Lawry's The Prime Rib) do not use season salt in everything! People who don't know how to cook only use Lawry's Seasoned Salt. lol It also felt like a loud cheap Casio because of the big group of people playing Bunco in the back. We are local and this is our weekly restaurant. I love the #3 with a ground beef mini shell tostada and two cheese enchiladas. The nachos were good ask for a side of jalapeños as the salsa was a little bit bland. The golden Cadillac margaritas were on point, the 25 ounce Modelo's were served ice cold. We ordered the steak chicken and shrimp fajitas they were good but liked a little bit of flavor. The flautas which we ordered half chicken and half beef were delicious and I must try. As far as the desserts the churros were a solid 4. The nice surprise was there Apple pie chimichanga which was absolutely fabulous we asked for it with a side of ice cream to make it almost like a Apple pie à la mode. OK, This is Pretty Good Mexican Food! Been traveling half way across the country this week, have tried to have Mexican food for the last 3 nights. In Dodge City Kansas don't bother, Gallup New Mexico better but they must have a different definition of the spices and quality I thought good but not great. In Tehachapi CA, Don Perico does it pretty well. Good Spice Level not super hot, but not bland (if you want hot I bet they will accommodate) Great Presentation, Excellent Wait and Service staff. We had a good Combination Plate of Enchilada &Small Tostada, I had 3 nice soft corn tortilla fish tacos, chunky avocado, decent rice (the weakest point) and beans. Rounded out with chardonnay and a Bud. $50. Same price as the unfinishable meal in Dodge City, but in Tehachapi CA, Don Perico is worthwhile! read more

We love Don Perico's!!!!!!!! Great taco salads (tostada grande), bean and cheese burritos, quesadillas, Don Perico nachos with carne asada, desserts. Their tacos are horrible and their "jumbo" shrimp are NOT jumbo shrimp. They're little round Sizzler-type-restaurant shrimp. But other than those 2 items, we have a great experience each time we go there. Very FAST for food to come out. Super friendly staff. Wow we haven't been here in a while and I was a little reluctant from reading all the negative reviews but we had a great dinner tonight. Food was pretty good service was great the drinks were awesome. My dad had Chile Verde and a Chile Rellno and he loved it. my wife had a three item combo: the taco, tostada and a tamale. The only thing she didn't like was the tamale, I took a few bites and have to agree it was a little bland, mushy and the meat was a little tough but other than that she enjoyed her meal. I played it safe with the fajitas and I was highly satisfied with my meal. the fajita chicken was tender, the vegetables were great. Someone said the beans are watered down but they didn't taste water down to us, they were average and the rice wasn't bad either it was your average restaurant rice and beans. We had some beers which were cold and we also had some shots of tequila and the pours were generous. We saw the guy with the Fannypack across his chest, he talked to us and he seem to be cool so I don't know what the problem is with that from other reviewers. Visiting from Chino Hills, CA. 5 top table. I ordered #2 combo with chile rellano and shredded beef taco. My dad got #3 combo with shredded beef taco, chile rellano and cheese enchilada. Two others at our table also got #2 combos and the last was a burrito. The food was so good! I loved how fluffy the batter was and the pepper was fully cooked. The cheese was melted. The taco was stuffed with beef and topped with jack(?) cheese and other fixings. Rice and beans were average. I could barely finish my entree and left some of the beans and rice behind. I was so full. My dad managed to clean his plate. The diner with the burrito took half of his meal home. The place was decorated accordingly. I thought the ceiling fans were really cool. They were wood palm leaves. Traditional Mexican music was piped in and wasn't too loud that we had to yell over it. Our server was attentive and our meals were correct. I use to look forward to coming to this restaurant, but that has changed now since the last time I had eaten here with my wife. The food was not tasteful like it use to be. The menu use to have more choices on it. I use to come here and always bring someone with me and we would order the Crab Enchiladas and they tasted really good, but it has been several years since I had been here. Something has changed with this place. This place must have new owners since about 5 or 6 years ago. I use to tell everyone that I came into contact with about this place and have people driving up to this place to eat here and would tell them if they were not satisfied I would reimburse them, but not anymore I now tell people how disappointed I was eating here. I had driven over 50 miles out of my way to come to this place to eat here, but never agaIn will I waste my time. Not only was the food awful tasting, but the place was not clean, as I left I looked under the tables and their was old food on the carpet, rice and other items. The men's restroom needs cleaning and should be checked by the staff hourly. I actually spent some extra time there just to see if anyone would push around a sweeper, but that never happened while I was there. I remember going to this restaurant and the place being crowded and I would always have to wait for about 20 to 40 minutes to be seated, but this last time I was there maybe just two families there, I did not understand why the place was so empty until I had taken my first bite of food, then I knew. This place was OK in past years. The owner opened another business that eventually failed. However while he was managing the other restaurant this one got worse due to management and lack of attention. When it first opened it was a "breath of fresh air". Unfortunately like a lot of restaurant owners, when things seem to go good and the business is good, they get a little greedy when they open another and can't stay on top of both of them. This isn't uncommon. In this case if he stays on top of the first one he can make it back but it takes time because it has already a bad reputation. Ok first off I'm giving 4 stars based soley on my one time there, on Taco Tuesday. I read all the savage reviews but decided to try it for myself since some people only review something when they have a bad experience. When I pulled in the lot I thought it was a good sign that the lot was pretty full. Sure enough the restaurant had a good crowd there for a Tuesday night in late January in Tehachapi (read COLD). The taco bar is limited as far as topping ingredients - but legit! It's a little taco bar setup in the restaurant bar area with a sweet Mexican woman hand making the tortillas. Yes hand making the tortillas like for realz people. Choices are: pollo (chicken), carnitas (pork), carne asada (beef), another kind of beef with corn or something in it, and something else I think was another style of pork (I didn't have either of the last 3 but all looked good). I had 2 carnitas tacos and 1 pollo taco. Dressed with salsa, cheese, shredded lettuce. There is salsa fresca there as well but I wanted to try the other salsas. Beware, the red salsa on the left end is FIRE FIRE muey picante! . Anyway my tacos were awesome, a lot of meat for a 1.69 taco! I was pretty full after 3 tacos.... BUT I went back and got 2 more carnitas as they are my favorite. ( Si, el gordo aqui!) 5 tacos and a beer later I'm really full and it came to about $15 plus tips I left for the bartender and the taco bar. The staff I interacted with were friendly, the place was clean, there was sports on the tv's, locals coming and going, and some good looking cocktails going past me at the bar. All good in my book. We came here for lunch in the middle of the week and it was a ghost town. Only one other table was seated after we came in. It was so dark coming in here that we thought we came into the movie theater by mistake. The tables were a little dusty/ sticky depending on where you sit. Being one of the 2 tables in here we got our drinks and complimentary chips quick. Unfortunately the chips were plain and needed salt but they tasted fresher than a lot of other places. It was funny to see the old tall red Pizza Hut type cups that I haven't seen in 20 years. We ordered carnitas and chicken fajitas and they came out in 30 minutes. The plate with the beans, rice, and guac was completely microwaved. The plate came out as hot as the fajita skillet. The chicken and pork were completely tasteless. The veggies were uncooked but were starting to cook in front of us on the hot skillet. The tortillas were super old and also seemed to be microwaved. However, what the restaurant lacks in food, they make up in entertainment. It was quite a meal listening to the two young waitresses talk if one was still pregnant or not. Joking aside, our server was extremely nice and made sure to check in with us regularly but our food was not. Gracian's is better but not by much. Just go to Taco Bell across the street. read more

I am super disappointed in everything I am hearing about Don Perico. I hear a lot is posted on Facebook about how bad it has gotten. I don't have social media , so I can't read it myself. With all the negative reviews and talk of cockroaches. I think I will have to take a seriously long break from this establishment. Very disappointed, because the other two Mexican places in town are nasty. Well I will just have to continue going to Agave in Bakersfield. Always a great meal there. We came to Don Perico's for early dinner and the place was pretty empty. That's probably why our food came out so fast, but a little too fast.. We were in and out of the place within a half hour! There were a ton of things I wanted to choose from the menu but I finally decided on the beef chimichanga. Unfortunately it was more of a wet burrito than a chimichanga...but luckily I do enjoy a good wet burrito. There wasn't too much rice and it was packed with meat. I liked the side of sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole, even though the guacamole was more like a chunk of avocado.
