Tourists beware!!! We fell prey to this terrible gelato spot. We went to the location across from the Spanish steps. It was so hot that we decided to take a chance and give it a try not aware of the viral video going around talking about what a SCAM this place is. They only offered me one size and didn't have prices listed. One of the guys scooping gelato said I looked like I had a social media following and asked how many social media followers I had which at first I took as a sweet compliment and now I realize they were most likely using that as a way to gauge how much they should charge me. We ended up paying $40 for 2 very subpar gelatos. They melted instantly and basically tasted like whipped ice cream. You cannot come to Italy and not have gelato. Knowing this, my girlfriend and I decided to try the gelato at Don Nino, which sat a stone's throw (or a coin's throw?) away from Trevi Fountain. Don Nino was very well lit, clean, and staffed by friendly people. After checking out their many flavors, I decided on two flavors: chocolate almond and coconut, served in an cup. My girlfriend decided on coffee and pistachio, served on a cone. After they gave us our gelato, I proceeded to check out. While there, I took a look at their other offerings. This place has quite a good variety of treats, to include cannolis. I will be back to Rome in the near future, and I will make it a point to stop by here again to try their other great products. This place treated us well, and was one of many great highlights in our weekend getaway in the fine city of Rome. I recommend them! read more

Cannolis, macarons, gelato and more. Such a nice place to stop for a sweet treat. The cannolis are made with an old Sicilian recipe. The crunchy shells are filled with sweet flavored ricotta cream fillings. The nocciola (hazelnut) was so delicious. The pastries and macarons are also so tempting. Grab a box of macarons or a tiramisu. Didn't try the gelato, but there were several choices of traditional Italian flavors. This is some of the best gelato I've ever had. I love that they have so many flavors, and they allow samples before choosing which to order. I also love that they have macarons and cannoli's and other items available. I actually visited here 2 days in a row because it was so good. The first day the service was exceptional and the guy dressed up my gelato with 2 wafers and a small cone. The second day I got one wafer, which is why I deducted a start. It's very inconsistent with what you get based on who is working and scooping your ice cream. I ordered a macaron the second day and it was delicious- some of the best I've ever had. The second day I ordered the stracciatella and it was delicious. The chocolate chip cannoli was okay- the filing was yummy but the shell was so hard it just crumbled and made it unappetizing to eat. I would pass on the cannoli next time. But the gelato and macarons are a definite must!!! If I go back to Rome, I will most definitely return. read more

*Tourist trap* *Rude manager* Ordered 3 gelattos and I said I wanted 1 scoop for each cup (€4 each) which should have been €12 total. Server then asked "Cup or cone?" I said: "3 cups". Upon payment, the server said it's €20. It should have been €12. Upon letting them know about the amount charged, the manager working there said it's "by size" and we were served a bigger cup size. We never asked for a bigger cup, we asked for 1 scoop as displayed on the price list. He continued arguing with us. It's not our fault the server decided to serve us in a bigger cup size (which is for 2 scoops) and charge more for it. The manager working there is argumentative and dismissive. It's €7 additional charge from me, but when everybody gets charged this way, could you imagine how much they over charge everyone? Please be careful and aware at this tourist trap - when you ask for 1 scoop they will automatically serve you in a bigger cup and charge you for 2! read more

I discovered Don Nino in Florence and then found it while we were in Rome. This shop is close to Trevi and the Spanish Steps. The service at this shop was less personal and the space was more cramped and confined, but the gelato was just as good. My only complaint was that we came specifically for a cannoli with pistachio cream and they gave me pistachio gelato instead on the side. I guess there are worse things to complain about. Iced coffee is pretty rare in Italy but we found a glass here and it was smooth and spectacular, especially since it had been a week since we last had one. read more

BEWARE!!!! LIARS and SCAMMERS!!! Location: Spanish steps. We only ordered 7 cups (some even single) and they wanted to charge us 10 because there were 10 of us. They were not counting apparently! And when I pointed out that there are only 7 cups even on our table, they told us - because you threw some of it away. Accusing us of lying but yet they have no list they can present. In fact, I wanted to pay before we went up, and they refused to take my card. Only then did I understand the modus operandi. Price is one thing to complain about but the blatant and unapologetic scam is unforgivable. They also scam you into sitting upstairs even if you just buy a gelato and don't tell you that they charge €3 per person - they were happily saying they will seat all 10+ of us, without proper disclosure of the €3 per person charge. And I would have not complained if their service was great! We ordered a sandwich along with two pizzas and water. We had to ask them 3x for the water. Took them at least 15 minutes to deliver our water. When I complained why they did not tell me about the €3 euro, they said because it is true everywhere, including US and so therefore I should have known about it. Nope! This was the only place that charged that. And in the US, they charge a tip based on the food we ate and service provided (hence, depends on how great the service is) not for simply taking a seat. A beautiful, and beautifully overpriced cute little place - the location, the goodies, the decor, everything exudes quality and refinement. But you're smack in the center, with a score of equally valuable alternatives, hence the four stars instead of five. A good gelato, just questionably priced. I also enjoyed the cannolo, although I found it a bit too sweet. They duly fill it on the spot, as it's supposed to be, and the dough remains flaky and crusty, creating the proper contrast with the ricotta inside. Again, a bit too sweet but still a pleasure. If you're around Fontana di Trevi, Don Nino looks and feels less touristy and will easily take care of your sweet tooth. Check your bill! We came across Don Nino cafe while visiting the Trevi fountain. We bought 4 coffees as usual and a mini cannoli to go at this cafe. I asked for the total bill but the waiter didn't seem to want to tell me the total Rather, he took my credit card, ran it through the credit card machine, ripped the receipt from the cc machine and put it in his register. I asked for a copy of the receipt and realized €25 was charged for 4 coffees and a mini cannoli! Thinking this is higher than my usual bills, I asked another waiter for the individual prices of each item but he won't tell me. He called the waiter who charged my credit card to tell me how much each items were and he got irritated. He told me the mini cannoli was €5 where I paid only €1.5 at another cafe. Coffees were €4 where I paid less elsewhere as well. However, all itemized items only totaled to €21. He told me the extra charge was tips. I was puzzled since I didn't authorize it. When he realized I caught him scamming me, he gave me back the difference, not to mention he already charged me a mark up on each individual items for being a tourist! I'm sure other tourists might have experienced similar situations. Even though it might seem a small amount but imagine how many tourists this cafe scam a day? Loved this place! It was clean and classically pretty, which drew our attention. We were viewing the Trevi Fountain at dusk (the best way to see it!) and had the urge for some gelato. We saw this place across the way and walked in. They do allow you to try one flavor. I had mine in the larger cup which gives you 3 flavors. I had the Ricotta y Cannoli, Crema and the Caramel flavors together. Very good and fresh tasting. There are several around the city, so stop in if you see one! read more
