Second time in a row, worst ever. Will never go back again. Both my wife and myself thought our dinner was terrible. Service was great, but food was awful. I had a beef tamale that was so tough, you could hardly put a finger through it and a chicken enchilada with no sauce and it was practically tasteless. The Spanish rice tasted like oil and cumin and nothing else. My wife had hardshell tacos that had dried, tasteless, beef, lettuce, and cheese. She did not wish to make a scene, so we did not send it back, so we just put it in a box and took it home. We left the server a good tip, but will never be back. read more

I really want to love this place being a childhood staple. Most people do love this place. I have been going here the majority of my life with my family. Good authentic Mexican food with no frills. Can be on the greasy side but delicious. Try it once and see what you think. So many great Mexican spots in So. Cal. read more

Don't waste your time with this place. $27 for fajitas for 2 shrimp 2 small pieces of burnt steak and 2 pieces of chicken well done with a ton of onions I usually don't complain but I asked the manager and he said sorry nothing I can do to help you I told him I would just take our business back to Elvira's Mexican restaurant at least they give you 4 oz of chicken,Steak and shrimp for $22.50. At least they weight out their meats this is a picture of my plate after making 1 small taco lol what a joke. Service was great manager was not very helpful. read more

Never disappoints!!! The legendary Simi establishment is one of our family favorites. For Birthdays and celebrations we tend to migrate here. We love the drinks ( you must get a strawberry margarita they still have the cool blended ones) killer chips n salsa, the chilled salad plates ( makes all the difference in the world) and just delicious food! We love the darkened vibe and the way you feel transported when you enter. I also love that the servers have been there forever! These guys all long time employees which speaks volumes about the place. read more

Stopped in quickly for a drink and a couple tacos in the bar before a movie and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The chicken was absolutely delicious and so very flavorful all on its own, which I can so appreciate! Also, they have fruit purer for the margaritas and to keep, that makes ALLLLLLL the difference between ok and absolutely AMAZING! Will be back again soon... read more

This Don Cucos never disappoints! The chips and salsa are flowing and the margaritas are delicious! The service and ambiance are amazing.

One of my favorite restaurants and a go-to spot for our friend group. The cocktails are top-notch--especially the margaritas--and the food is both delicious and satisfying. I love the fajitas, and the service is consistently impressive. The ambiance and lighting create a cozy, private feel in each booth. Can't wait to dine here again soon! read more

We moved to Simi about a year ago and were looking for a good Mexican restaurant, WE FOUND ONE! We like the chips and salsa they bring out, chili verde, molcajete. The staff is also VERY FRIENDLY. We recommend Don Cuco's read more

Love this restaurant and everyone we know loves that the lights are dim. That's how it should be! Dark and cool inside!! Can't see out the windows which is perfect. I am older too and the older ones who are complaining about seeing the menu just need to use their phone light! It's NOT a cafeteria! It's an old school awesome Mexican restaurant! Please don't change anything about the interior. Great staff and good food and drinks also! Lol read more

I stopped in here for a solo Mexican food lunch on a Thursday. I had no prior knowledge of the place, but had an hour to kill in Simi Valley, which was 98 degrees that day. It stands alone with a large parking area in a strip mall. This place was a welcome respite from the heat. Immediately, you enter a darkened restaurant. That alone cooled me off. I was shown to a roomy booth and greeted by a friendly server. I had iced tea along with chips and salsa in no time. The salsa was fresh - just enough heat without going overboard. I ordered a cheese enchilada plate with refried beans and rice. All was delicious. The enchilada sauce here is baked in - the enchiladas are not "swimming", which I liked. Great flavors, right amount of cheese, and excellent refried beans. Pricing was reasonable, service was excellent, and the restrooms were nice and clean, too. Due to the lighting, I didn't take any pictures to share. It's immediately off the 118 at Tapo Canyon (go south). Definitely going back! read more

Both my baby (10 month old) and I got sick after eating here. My poor daughter got diarrhea for 2 days and I kept throwing up the next day. I had the shrimp ranchero with meatball soup. I knew something was off with the food, I asked the waiter he said it's normally like that. A day later my husband experienced the symptoms too, we both couldn't stop throwing up. We ended in the ER from food poisoning. I don't think ingredients are fresh here and sanitation is not followed to code. read more

Service always good. Food was great. Would prefer better lighting. Always a welcome greeting.

Had some dinner here the other night with the family! It was 4 of us and they told us the wait time would be at least 25-30 minutes, but it took maybe 15 minutes to be seated on a Friday night. We ordered some margaritas, I got the raspberry margarita, pretty good! I also ordered the chicken mole enchiladas, they were really good and I got an Albondigas soup with it! Pretty tasty! Chips and salsa are always good! They have a pretty decent size menu, I would love to come back and try more of the menu! read more

I found Don Cuco Mexican Restaurant by accident, while dining at another location in the Simi Valley vicinity. Came here for dinner a few days later, on a Friday night and got a table at short notice. One striking feature as you enter the establishment is that the lighting is red (yes, most of the light bulbs are red). So everything gets a red hue and it can take sometime to get adjusted (unless you still go to the disco), so that you can observe, read the menu and order. First came the warm chips with salsa. Both of these were good. Other party members had margaritas and liked them. For food, there were 3 dishes, all of which were dinner combos (rice and beans). The fried burrito with chicken, two chicken tamales and two lobster enchaladas. The first two were just okay, nothing to write home about. I am always apprehensive about lobster menu items and this item confirmed that uneasiness. The server said there would be chunks of lobster. Instead there were un flavorful shreds of meat with a seafood taste. I was disappointed. The black beans were cooked al dente and were tasty. Fried ice cream for a member of our party was well received. Service was informative, friendly and excellent. read more

Best part of the meal was the chips and salsa; lemon water. Al pastor was really greasy and salty. Too much cilantro (or whatever the green herb was on top of the meat in the taco.). Rice had no flavor; same with small avocado for tacos. And expensive $18.95 for lunch combination plate with two tacos, rice and beans. Service ok. Ambience typical Cuco's. Unfortunately this seems to be the trend at most eateries I've been to lately. I'm eating out less, making better dinners at home at a fraction of what I'd pay out read more

We love the food and as retired people it's on our weekly rotation. Love the Arroz con pollo and the fish tacos

This is my second visit to Don Cuco in Simi Valley. The first time was during the pandemic when they had outdoor seating. The second time was this past weekend. Both times were great experiences. Great food, large plates and portions, and the most important...wonderful time with the family. Having to experience two different location of Don Cucos I would like to start by saying that each of the locations have been very consistent with food and interior atmosphere. I am not 100% fan of the low light/red setting as it is pretty dark and difficult for the elders to view the extensive menu. But while you're inside you kinda get used to it. One thing that I would like to shoutout is their bean and rice. Going back to the basics the beans and rice here alone are delicious. My mother ordered an al la carte item that didn't have the two and she straight up stole my sides. Don Cuco is a great place for family meals or a hang out at the bar with your friends. Parking: medium size private lot VERDICT: Rinse and repeat read more

Don Cuco Mexican Restaurant - Soft taco plate (al pastor, asada, carnitas) - Tacos Near Me - Simi Valley, California

"Life without Mexican food? I don't want to taco 'bout it," said an old friend and Don Cuco is the place to go! Located on Tapo Canyon and Cochran on the 118 Freeway exit heading east, is a food haven for all in Simi Valley. I love their wet burrito steak with cheese on top and salsa on the side, too. Their tacos of Al Pastor is like food of the gods cause they'll make you scream for more. They also serve a little more formal dishes like their Carne Asada which is a favorite in this part of town, soft, easy to cut and chew and average in price. Parking is abundant and if you wanted to eat outside of the restaurant, they have heaters and fans, whatever time of the year, you might want to enjoy Mexican. Prices are about average and the cooks are authentic in their tases and presentations. The customer service is outstanding and staff are really nice and kind. read more

What an awesome restaurant! I love the vibe and decorations. The service was fabulous! Both the servers and bussers were very attentive. I had the mixed fajitas and the steak was unbelievable along with the peppers and onions. Chips and salsas were delicious. They have a spicier salsa as well that you should definitely try. Oh and the Mexican pizza is a must! It's huge! We will definitely be back! read more

We went to Don Cusco's in Simi Valley on Saturday before Mother's Day. My husband's chicken burrito did not smell right so we told the waitress. We left more than half on the plate and waitress actually asked if we wanted to take it home? Then, my shrimp with garlic sauce plate #64 on the menu was cold ... my ice tea had hardly any tea in it... was nothing but ice water ... we told the waitress but she did nothing to remedy the problems. We used to go to Don Cuco in the past but they have declined over the past few years!! To make matters worse, my husband ended up with heart burn and stomach ache Saturday night. read more

I have lived in Los Angeles for more than 70 years, so I grew up with Mexican food in homes and restaurants. Today, I ate here for the first time. This is a comfortable restaurant, with food that tastes like it was made in the kitchen of a Mexican home. The wait staff was patient and attentive. I look forward to eating again at Don Cuco Mexican Restaurant soon. read more

Great food & service! Margaritas were great & food came out promptly. Prices were really reasonable.

I've come here many times now trying to figure out how to review for this restaurant coming from a hometown place and it took me awhile to review because every time we've come as a family or by myself it has not been great . The service is a hit and miss sane as the food. I do love the chips and salsa but how can you go wrong with chips salsa yes and this is just ok for salsa . Let's talk about service this time . I made it very simple . I ordered a burrito special which comes with three different meats but o ordered chicken only with green sauce no beans inside but add them outside and black beans . I got black beans outside along with black beans inside and hardly any meat which was $20.00 for the meal . I don't complain very easy, but I have to say something this time . When I ordered A burrito with only chicken and no beans but black beans on the outside and it originally came with three meats and beans and I got maybe some chicken inside along with black beans and black beans outside .... This is a big mistake . Such a simple order how can you get it wrong not to mention never came back to Che k on us even our neighbors was asking did she go on lunch did she leave where is she . So yes leave it at that note. Still not the best service that o was hoping for to support our own people here in simi. The food is still just ok but I would rather go to sharks which is not a restaurant and get my food they are always great service clean and in tip top shape for orders with no mistakes ever. Just had to post this to give the right reviews and be fair as it should be. Also I would have complained about the beans inside but I had to leave on an emergency and take my food to go so I did not see this until I actually got home to be able to eat it . read more

I am a senior and live less than five minutes from your place. My delivery today was so extremely disappointing. I only order take out once or twice a month. When I do, I hope to get exactly what I want, because it is expensive as I'm on a fixed income. But I do it to treat myself. NOT A TREAT!! The food was so cold! I ordered the luncheon cheese enchiladas, which includes one SMALL cheese enchilada, which was so cold. Won't order here as again. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. WASTED MY MONEY!! read more

This review is about the lack of service and blatant disrespect, We live 5 minutes away and decided to ride our bikes down to Don Cucos to sit outside since we have had a terrible experience inside and avoid eating inside in the main dining area- we take out or eat in the patio. We were just there 10 minutes ago, a young guy sat us outside, gave us two menus and never came back. Didn't ask us if we wanted drinks so we figured he was getting water and returning to get our drink order but he never came back. We sat there for 15 minutes and decided to leave. Was tempted to ask for the manager this time but honestly, just like the previous time- I just wanted to avoid any issues. The first time we had terrible service, not the first time eating here because like I mentioned we live in Simi 5 minutes away and have ate here many times but the last time inside I was made to feel very uncomfortable by the waiter because I decided to order a soup and a salad. My husband ordered a plate but the waiter was upset that I ordered a salad and soup and I asked him in Spanish "are you upset with me? Did I do something wrong? Are you upset because I orders a soup and salad? I am not that hungry right now. That is exactly what I told him. Humiliating. I am a petite person and I don't necessary always want to get a huge dish for myself. If you offer appetizers and soups and salads you shouldn't be made to feel like you are expected to get a combination dish. read more

Great spot! We had a reservation for 8 on a busy December Saturday evening and were seated right away. The service was fantastic, fast, and friendly. Warm chips and tasty salsa came right away, followed soon by drinks. I had a house margarita and it was perfect. Not too sweet, not too sour, and a generous pour. I ordered the Mexican pizza and my wife had the mixed fajitas. Both dishes came hot and tasted great. The rest of the group was also happy with their meals. The atmosphere is fun and lively. I saw a few other reviews complaining about the red lights for some reason, but I personally really liked the lighting and ambiance. Special shout out to our server and his team of Bussers. They kept drinks full and cleared empty plates within seconds. The manager also stopped by to check on things. Service was outstanding. We will definitely be back. read more

Still our go to for Mexican food in Simi Valley. We come here at least once per week for dinner. Friday and Saturday are still their busiest nights. I have been ordering a lot of shrimp dishes lately. The shrimp fajitas and shrimp burrito a la diabla. They use shrimp that are a nice size and it is a good portion. The chips and salsa are some of the best. The salsa is spicy! Service is still on par. Servers are friendly and helpful. Drinks are kept filled and chips and salsa never run low. We've been coming here for years, and we will continue to, probably every week, lol. read more
